Love that this show taught chemistry too. Basil saying sodium chloride is followed by Dawson's line of "salt water" and bam. Kids learn chemistry. Kids look at Basil playing with chemistry, kids learn chemistry. That's really smart.
It depends on the kid watching and how well they understand the context. I can remember watching this scene but not understanding a word Basil was saying even with Dawson's "salt water" line. So the fact that he was using chemistry never occurred to me until I rewatched this movie as an adult. For me, Basil introduced me to the process of deduction. While I didn't understand what he was using, the fact that he knew what type of pen was used, what type of paper it was and that different alcohol could produce a different smell as well as the type of coal dust simply by looking and smelling help me understand how he knew where to find the seedy pub in the first place. His confidence and no second-guessing in what he saw was inspirational to understand "truths" which is needed in the process of deduction. I guess I was more like Dawson then I realized when I was kid: not stupid by any means, but in awe of a new way to look at the world.
@@DragonessTiger It wasn't a cash cow. It made $50 million worldwide in the box office but wasn't enough to invest it into a franchise. This lost to "An American Tail", which became a franchise with a theatrical sequel, two direct-to-video sequels, a tv series, and so much more.
Bailey Provance True but I think he is a bit conceited as he always seems to think he knows everything and likes to take credit for everything and he can be a bit snobbish especially towards Olivia but he becomes more nicer to her towards the end of the film and at the end of the film he says to Dawson 'All in a good day's work' meaning he became more modest.
Basil is the closest thing to a computer with how he just analyzed the paper alone. Characters like this are a hard find, especially with Disney's current projects.
@@Shadowkey392 Cumberbatch's reasonable performance, but the abomination of those versions of Moriarty and the Hound of the Baskervilles cannot lightly be forgiven.
This movie inspired my love for mysteries & my interest in science. Through Basil I grew to love detective stories & tv shows as it always fascinates me how the sleuth is able to solve the case with even the simplest of observations. Seeing them use science or everyday tools to find the criminal, is why I came to love science as even just a fingerprint can tell a great deal about someone. Thanks for inspiring me, Basil.
Of course the big irony of this scene is that basil figured out materials, location markers, personality of the writer. But he never took the time to really think about what all the things on the list are FOR. 😅
That is what makes Basil such a great character. He's so sure of his intelligence, always seeking out the complicated details that he knows only he can find. But he overlooks the simple things because anyone would look at the list and come up with some explanation.
I think he was just too distracted by wanting to rescue Olivia that he completely forgot about what he learned in that toy shop with the missing uniforms and gears.
Again I will say... If done correctly, disney could have a good thing for a Disney + series from this movie alone tbh. But only IF they get good writers, good voice actors, good artists, and good advertisement. Of course respect the original movie by keeping it 2D animated for the most part, maybe add a bit of CGI for things. Sure some voices would need recast due to their original dying. I.e Vincent Price for one thing.
Life is very simple and elementary how you learn on what's great about being a truly great detective how Basil himself was one of the greatest figures in history.
Pretty sure it's just a fictional paper manufacturing company that was calling itself Mongolian as in a name of the company rather than being from Mongolia directly lol
Dawson did have Dawson’s knowledge is more toward rodent body and how to heal them But yes he would have slight chemistry knowledge, a reason he was able to know when Basil said Sodium Chloride, he meant seawater Dawson has his own brilliance enough to recognize Basil’s and help him out in this adventure
I agree. I have tried to find those comics too. I so far one of the movie, one which Ratigan returns, and two different cases. I have found more, but I can't get to read them 😫
If they remake this film this would be my cast: Basil Benedict Cumberbatch Dawson Colin Firth Ratigan Jim Carrey Flaversham Peter Capadi Queen Helen Mirren Fidget Frank Welker
Considering Disney writers now... I am kind of glad that they probably never will. They'd probably write Basil as completely incompetent and have him always one up'd by a Mary Suish female counterpart who is like... Five steps ahead of the bad guys and has no flaws.
What's absolutely wonderful is that we see the mouse version of Holmes' knowledge of chemistry and forensics.
I adore Basil he has so much personality and totally adores what he does. His voice actor should rest in peace he brought so much personality to him.
Barrie Ingham

He does Rest In Peace… literally, sadly 😢

As you know, I instantly knew the basic sodium chloride is table salt!

It's disgraceful we never got a TV series out of this brilliant movie.
😃 That would have been awesome to see. But I'm glad Basil, Dawson, Ratigan and Fidget made cameos in House of Mouse 😌
We almost got a comic series but it only lasted 1 issue.
Kinda shocked it never did. Nearly every other Disney movie always got a tv or comic book series that continued or preceded to the film.
And Once Upon a Studio

Probably Disney’s most underrated hero/duo
Basil is getting his Sherlock on! Love it!! Boo yah!!!
R.I.P. Barrie Ingham (the voices of Basil of Baker Street and Bartholomew). That man passed away and went up to heaven really soon😔🙏🏻
He was close to 83 years old when he died.
Better portrayal of Doyle's detective than Cumberbatch could ever be.
I think RDJ was also a good portrayal of Doyle's detective
Cumberbatch did really well, what are you saying?!
Them be fighting words!
you're right. At least, in this scene
He’s not Sherlock Holmes, just a Disney character inspired by him.

I love the animation of liquids in this film.

Too bad this ends before Basil can finish his sentence.

Basil's voice is so.....sexy! ❤😍
i wonder this is how smart people think ; really, really fast
if you're onto something like having a hunch then ya, you want to test your theory to get the result as soon as possible.
I had hoped for a series of this (like Alladin, Hercules etc.) but these days I dread what they might ruin next.

Basil's observation of the list is similar to Holmes' observation of the letter in The Man With the Twisted Lip
Shouldn't Basil be wearing rubber gloves?
I don’t think they were widely available in the Victorian Era.
Doctors didn’t even believe in washing hands and sanitizing equipment.

Mentats are the super analysis from Dune.
