It's also somewhat grey and overcast here in Ireland this morning but somehow also calming, I too am learning to appreciate this time of year.

When I was a kid in Manchester we often summered in N. Wales (family there) which was lovely, but we never went abroad. When I was a working adult (aged 20) and in a position to go on a foreign trip, I chose not Benidorm or Ibiza in August, but Munich in January. Absolutely loved it. Winter's just around the corner here in Japan, and I can see the freshly fallen snow on Mount Fuji and I'm buzzing!

Very well articulated. Switzerland also has this same sentiment of Gemütlichkeit, slowing down, appreciating the simpler things and baking 'güezi' together with family/friends. :)

Not to distract from the topic of this video, I think what you've done with your channel is fantastic, giving your thoughts and tips on Germany from a British perspective. I am often in Switzerland and would like to do something similar from an Irish/Anglo perspective, I really like the balance of topics you have, it gives a fascinating insight into what it is like for someone from our islands to live in the Germanic parts of Europe.

We just had a very warm, lovely evening yesterday, having been invited to eat Duck by my Ukrainian neighbor/friend.
Everything was really delicious, 3 other neighbors came and a friend from the Integration class, and it was Russian/German all the way.
This beautifully edited video just speaks perfectly to the joy, the glow of friendship that was so evident yesterday.
Being able to have friends among your neighbors will always be a blessing.
Have a nice Sunday everyday, schönen 1. Advent!

A minor clarification on winter tires in Germany. You are not generally obliged to have them; you're just not allowed to drive your car without them in winter conditions, i.e., snow, ice, or sleet on the road.

It is still OK to have all-year- round tyres (Ganzjahresreifen) when they've got a special symbol printed on them.

There is actually a word to describe a feeling of anxiety you can get in the summer months. It's called "sunshine guilt" and describes a guilty feeling one gets when not "using" the good, warm weather to it's full potential. Now I don't know if this is neudeutsch or if it's originally an english term, but it's definatly something I and other germans around me experience and can get relief from in the winter months. You don't have to feel guilty about staying inside and taking time to do nothing basically, and that coincides with what you said about "Winterruhe". I've also lerned to like winter!

As usual a very balanced and well-articulated video. Thanks a lot, always a real treat to see your videos! Wish I could feel about winter in Germany (or in fact anywhere cold) the way you do! Congrats! For me this time of year is a serious challenge every year, and it‘s getting more difficult as I get older. In fact the only place where I found winter was even more of a challenge was precisely the UK, as I felt that winters there were even darker, greyer, wetter, and lacking the only things I don’t hate about winter in Central Europe, the festive Christmas atmosphere and the coziness of saunas. Keep enjoying German winters!

As an English visitor, I love the winter here.... insbesondere Bayern! A few winters ago... wir besuchten das Hermannsdenkmal in der Nähe von Detmold, wir waren alleine im Wald. Although that was not Bavaria it was very atmospheric, it's about nature in Germany, as much as anything else. British Xmas markets are rubbish generally, Birmingham... exciting... no... unfortunately a very dangerous place these days! Good video.

I'm originally from Kazakhstan, and we have much more colder winters and much more warmer summers there. I do (sincerely) enjoy German and generally European winters and climate. 🙂

Many people say that November is the most depressing month of the year, but I don’t think so. In my opinion January is much more depressing because it follows the Christmas and End of the year festivities with absolute darkness, emptiness and boredom. I really hate January!

  • @wakeupcall2665
    @wakeupcall2665 Годину тому

November really is the longest months of the grey winter period.
Often the weather tends to foggy lower lying areas near the river valleys, and beautiful autumn weather in the mountains (not exclusively to the Alps)
Today is such a day. Here in the Vorwald rising up from the river Danube in Niederbayern it is really foggy right now with frost (which covers everything in ice dust) and glorious sunshine in the Bayerwald above around 600-700 meters elevation with excellent clear conditions all the 120km over to the Salzburger Alpen.
    Beautiful.
Christmas month of December gets everyone in the festive spirit, and in January the days get longer by an hour from between the beginning and end of the month.
Overall, I prefer spring and summer, though. I am not a fan of the Christmas craziness on TV and media and shops.
In fact, the Christmette at the Heilig-Geist Church München Viktualienmarkt on Christmas Eve at 10pm is everything for me.
Live music with trumpets playing traditional Christmas songs, a lot of people just enjoying the special moment, then walking home through a quiet and peaceful Munich, a few taxis only passing by, other people wishing a Merry Christmas. That is Christmas. Celebrating the birth of our saviour Jesus Christ. Being born in a stable.
Every time I think about that I get emotional.
Simply because it is so wonderful. And I am so grateful for those moments.
Anyhow, thank you for the video. God bless!

This message is sponsored by Father Christmas. Nice try, but the winters are too long! ;) I am complaining about the long winter and then the summer when its too hot. There is no satisfying me :D Great video. Loved how you touched some snow in Austria, we will also head there soon. I hope my Ganzjahrreifen will be ok!
