- How I replaced the Starter on my Chevy Astro Van (2nd generation 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005) with a new TYC Starter. This replacement was performed on a 2001 Chevy Astro Cargo Van, yours will be very similar.
One additional step I didn’t perform in the video is to add some dielectric grease or silicon paste to the contacts of the starter to prevent corrosion. I use this stuff from amazon its great:
Now when you use these amazon links you support this channel! It doesn't cost you anything extra, but a small portion of your purchases goes to me when using these links and helps me to continue making more videos!

What a great video !!! Simple and straight to the point , no stupid ass intro . Keep it up bro !!!
Absolutely outstanding! Unlike the other "Astrovan starter removal/install" videos on here that waste time detailing everything other than removing the starter ex: beautiful weather, look no rust in my bottom, etc... you specifically detailed what's requested. THANK YOU!!! for not wasting my time. This is the only vid that I did not have to fast forward just to remove/reinstall the starter; in fact I did lots of rewinds because you were so good.
Thanks so very much :)
Wow! Outstanding instructional video!
Thanks for slowing down video at point of installing the two big wires.
How have I never found your channel before?! This blows almost every other video and channel out of the water. I've been using youtube when working on my cars for well over a decade, and I can't remember seeing a better style to help guide someone along on their journey. Thank you. Thank you thank you thank you.
Thanks for the Video,We have a 2003 Astro Van after watching it I was inspired to try it myself and save some money.I followed the video to the letter and it all came together.Other than being a tight fit with the wiring it went well and the Van started right up THANKS for the Video !!
So glad to hear that!! :)
2 positive 😳 thank you so much sir
Thank you!
Thanks for not wasting my time, you got straight to the point and didn't make a damn soap opera out you demonstration, most diy like me have full time jobs and don't have a minute to waste on a betting around the bush demonstration, thanks again, I even had time to commit 🧐
It was very helpful to watch your video. Thank you.
Yessssss! Please do do a video on cleaning the throttle body but a complete removal. Where you have to remove the sensors and replace gaskets and o-rings...I have a GM service manual but it doesn’t show the parts needed to replace.
Saved me some money😁
I’m losing my mind trying to figure out where to put the jackstands on my 03 Safari. The jack itself is directly in the way of my path to the starter. Good video though. Thanks.
No sound?
Good job A+
Thanks for a concise video with all the needed details.
And... WT? kind of starter is GM using - the solenoid is bigger than the starter. Sheesh.
My TYC went bad already, grinding loud! Bought it in May 2019 and have barely driven since Pandemic shutdown California. Super freaking disappointed that I need a new starter! Not another TYC that's for sure
Love ya videos mate! When I get to my starter, the cables don’t seem to be as long. Did you maneuver a certain way get starter closer to the ground? Otherwise really awkward lol
[thank, you for you're helpful video.]👍
Gracias por el video
Hopefully its easy as shown, gonna do this tomorrow in the rain, on the gravel, in the cold, first time
Well, how did it go?
@jackcarterog001 bro, it was easy as hell... if I recall it was 3 bolts 13mm
I just sat on my side under the passenger wheel area and reached it with a ratchet.... tapped it off and slid the new one in its place and hooked up the wire, started quick first try.
Easiest starter ever. It took about 15 min total
is that 8mm a negative cable or positive solenoid wire?
will this work on my 95?
after i replaced my old starter with my new one, i have a terrible grinding noise. would you know why that would be?
starter needs to be shimmed out!
Did you find the answer?
You may need to shim the starter. You can buy starter shims and I suspect there is a video that shows you how to adjust it.
Any advice on what to do if the negative terminal has broken off?
Fix it.
It isn't the negative terminal. It is the start wire that energizes the solenoid coil, but if it is broken just splice a new end. If the terminal is broken replace the solenoid
