    Hey, just wanted to let you know how revolutionary your video was for me. But I think I even improved on your formula. I have very limited space (suburban backyard ). So why I do is I order 30 chicks. My favorite is the Meyer rare breed or colorful egg layer assortments. Meyer has a 100% sexing guarantee so they refund for any males. I can get a chick for $5 that they sell for $40! I identify what I get (there are online communities that help) I brood them all for a couple weeks. I feed organic /non gmo feed. When they’re feathered out or even around 4-6 weeks when they’re off heat (I’m in Texas so it’s warm ) I sell them for $15-20 each. And people buy them FAST. I get to keep a couple of my favorites but other people subsidize my chicken hobby and they’re grateful because most people think brooding is a PITA

    Instead of buying chicks, raise your own..... Chicks at this point are $5 each. Raising your own also allows you to keep a constant stock of hens/poults/chicks. Excess roosters also keeps the freezer full.

    It's not that much of a stretch to sell $2000 of $2500 worth of produce from your small acreage, which isn't going to mak you rich, but in many areas you can pay farm property tax rate and save a lot of money. Makes a difference. This can be animals, sweet corn, fruits and veggies, eggs, etc.

    • @FlanaganHomestead
      @FlanaganHomestead  3 роки тому

      Thank you for commenting. That is a very good point people don’t often realize. With generating small amounts of income through agriculture on your property you could potentially save a lot of money on property taxes if you qualify for agriculture, timberland, open space etc. whatever is allowed in your area.

      Glad to hear you want to raise chicks. I go to work all day and they are fine on their own. They need food set out, water and warmth depending on the time of year. Obviously they need a place they are safe, no dogs, cats, raccoons etc. can get them. How many do you plan to raise? I might be able to give a better recommendation when o know how many you want to raise.

    Selling hens for $25 is gonna take awhile and gonna have to be a fancy one. Farmers markets and chicken auctions avg head price is +-$10 roosters go half. But say you did manage the $350 it took you 6 months to do it you avg around $2 a day, you could probly pick up change in front of quick marts and do better. As far as eggs go your breed would have to be one of the leghorns or those bovine browns to get a decent amount of eggs which sell around $2 a dozen. If you pick a fancy pretty bird 1 egg every few days and dont forget in the winter you eggs pretty much stop.

    • @FlanaganHomestead
      @FlanaganHomestead  2 роки тому +3

      Thanks for your thoughts. I don’t know if I am happy for you things are so cheap there or sad you are in a suppressed market. Auction birds are the old wasted hens everyone is getting rid of. We get similar to what you mentioned here for old birds. We sold ours quickly for $25 because they had just reached point of production their most valuable stage. The hens I have lay way more than every other day. Also my neighbor sells more eggs than me and sells out at $6 a dozen. I sell mine for $4 and they never last more than 2 days.

    • @xWARCHIEFx
      @xWARCHIEFx 2 роки тому +1

      @@FlanaganHomestead I live in central arkansas and those prices are for good hens usually pullets which are bout to lay. I noticed only slight differences when i lived in western oklahoma which has much less supply for chickens. What is you avg 50lb sack of chicken feed there cost? I feed organic and runs me $23 for 40lbs if i use regular its $16 for 50lbs but i see less egg production and hens "seem" less healthy but i do free range the hens at noon so i dont have to walk the pasture to find my eggs.

    • @FlanaganHomestead

      @@xWARCHIEFx thanks for the info. I pay a couple dollars more per bag than you. I also free range my chickens. I think the advantage I have is although I live out in the woods it is not too far from Portland. You can sell eggs a dozen organic free range eggs at the Portland farmers market for $9. I do not do this as I choose to stay away from Portland as much as possible. The market does extend out and give us good options for selling. I am about the lowest price I know of around here at $4 a dozen. Hope you do well with your farm.
