Miss Battle gives us a superb soprano rendition of this belovéd song, and it is one of my favorite offerings. The other is that of Bryn Terfel, whose gloriously rich and mellifluous bass-baritone voice is perfectly suited to this piece, just as is Muss Battle's crystal clear and bright soprano voice. .
The soprano voice is a wonderous instrument, in all of its many variations. I have enjoyed the performances of such legendary artists as Shirley Verrett, Barbara Hendricks, and the incomparable Jessye Norman for years. But I must say that Ms Kathleen Battle is my favorite. Her wonderous tone, and the palpable joy that she exudes in all her performances is truly extraordinary. And her physical beauty is stunning. For me, she is the greatest soprano of all time.

Quite right, probably the setting was intelligently chosen to reflect that! Vermeer (a near contemporary of Handel) often used musical references in his subjects. The style of window and direction of the limpid light is very Vermeer. Also the purity of the singer with her contemporary but demure white gown....not to mention her stunning voice and delivery. Brava, Kathleen Battle!

This song was the the favourite piece of music for Karen Blixen (Out of Africa). It reminded her of her big love, who died back in Africa, Denys Finch Hatton, and it was the last piece of music, Baroness Blixen ever heard in her life, when she went to sleep for the last time, in Rungstedlund back in Denmark in 1962.
My darling aunt, Jean Grayston, who died two months ago aged 91, sang this a few months before her death. She was a classically-trained opera singer and despite her great age and encroaching dementia, remembered every word after decades. Amanda Graves - I was sitting here crying and recalling the Kathleen Battle concert to which I took my mother - a classicly trained Coloratura Soprano and pianist. I just passed the second anniversary of her death. Mom's voice was so beautiful, like Kathleen's, who is described as BOTH a Coloratura and a Lyric Soprano. I am not well educated in music and had to learn about Lyrics. They are described as able to hit highest notes, also, but they sing tenderly and gently. I believe Mom was both, too, and that is why I associate her voice with Kathleen's. I recall her telling me that a good Soprano has no vibrato and hits the highest notes softly.
