Nice chat! I have to say, I never really understood where the idea came from that RTS cannot be a mainstream genre, while RTS games were are the top of the sales charts in the late 90's and early 00's. I think the relatively lacking sales performance of RTS games over the past decade is not because the audience is no longer there, but rather that the games themselves were lacking. Studios kept making their games more and more sweaty and competitive, chasing that imaginary e-sports crowd, while research has proven time and again that RTS gamers overwhelmingly prefer singleplayer skirmish and campaign. Studios have been stripping RTS games of many features that made them unique and awesome, in favour of watered down MOBA mechanics. In addition to that, most of these games were made on a shoestring budget and thus were never really able to compete with the production values of the AAA RTS games of yesteryear.
Having said that, I have a lot of confidence in this new wave of RTS games. I feel that more and more developers are realizing what made RTS awesome and focus on that, instead of chasing the lastest gaming trends. The points touched upon by the panelists in this video confirms that.

@@GlobalConflagration this UA-cam video opens with a quote from Kane of C&C. Kane is quoting Orwell. seperately Dune also quoted Orwell or rather did a spin on it. but this video wasn't referencing that :)
