- Performance of Carpe Diem, the short (about 2 min.) 3rd movement of the 7-part, 23-minute piece A Change of Seasons by Dream Theater (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Change_of_Seasons) from 1995.
On the original, John Petrucci used a classical guitar (nylon strings), but I think it sounds good on steel strings as well. Maybe I'll record a classical version as well for comparison. The original also has vocals, which you should be thankful I did not add here.
Performed on a Martin 000-28, recorded using a prototype Mojotone pickup directly into an audio interface. These days I'm typically mixing the pickup and a large diaphragm condenser mic, but for this it was just the pickup.
Full disclosure - the audio and video recordings were done separately. That is, I first recorded the audio and then made the video of myself playing along with that. Yeah, I know - it's cheating...

"Seize the day" I heard him say, "life will not always be this way. Look around and hear the sounds, cherish your life while you're still around"

what an amazing preformance. john really knows his chords 😂😂
Awesome cover. These chords are amazingly written together.
Fantastic, sir! Of course, your playing is excellent, the sound is rich and full (I don't mind about the separate recording) This also serves to show yet another way that John Petrucci is one heck of a guitar player. His chord repertoire far exceeds most regular 'metal' guitarists. Another great example of Petrucci's great chord work is in the 'Someone like Me' section of Octavarium.
thx Daniel!
beautiful playing! great job!
thx!
No words and just an acoustic guitar, I have never noticed some parts of this sound very ELP-ish.
Fuckin brilliant mate! new friend here 🤘 great acoustic version of it
Flawless.
Simply beautiful!
Incredible...I've always been waiting for this...
Nice!
Beautiful. +1 for this and +1 for the algorithm that recommended it to me. Cheers.
thank you!
Beautifully played! Great job.
Wow! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Beautiful
Amazing
It's beautiful
Beautifully done 👍
Beautiful.
Feels so weird out of the rest of the piece.
Edit: seen it 5 times now. There's two verses missing at the beginning:
"The news of the fall
The sounds in the hall
The clock on the wall...
Thx Leonardo - there are a couple of things in doing wrong, and the recording could be better... So I'll probably redo this at some point...

I would love to see it
Increíble. Amazing¡¡¡¡¡.
Nicely done Sir!
That's super amazing
thx a bunch Roberto
Nicely done
Beautiful performance, love
Thank you!
Hearing this part isolated, it really reminds me of Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s “The Sage” from their rendition of Pictures at an Exhibition. Amazing playing!
thx Corey - I love "The Sage"! going to have to record that sometime!
Really well done on this, the fingering on these sections are incredibly awkward but you played it all very clean.
Such a beautiful piece too, quite incredible to think John Petrucci was only 21 years old when he wrote this section.
thanks! and yes, amazing!
Wow John that was impressive. Excellent playing, smooth chord changes and terrific articulation. I'm learning this song and not looking forward to this part lol
thx! I think my newer stuff sounds a bit better - check out the 3 recordings of the McLaughlin etude if you get a chance
Maravilhoso..👏👏👏👏👏
Pretty cool hearing this section unaccompanied. Very well written piece by JP. And you nailed it.
Have you ever done a rendition of Broon's Bane by Alex Lifeson?
thanks! haven't done Broon's Bane, but it's a great suggestion - I'll add it to my list (which also includes Mood For a Day, Horizons, The Sage, ...)

👏👏👏
Awesome performance sir!
thx!
Sounds great
thx!

Best.
Very well done. I'm a bass player, but I remember learning how to play this part on guitar because this is such a beautiful section. That was a while ago, and I don't even remember the chords anymore. But pretty cool to watch someone playing it so well.
More dream theater song pls….❤
I'll try!
0:27 such difficult chords
ha - yes, that took a bit of practice for sure - if you watch other videos you'll see that some others play that part differently - this is just the fingering that works for me
That's badass dude those stretch chords are hard but fuckin badass👌🤘🤘🎸
It reminds me to opeth
is it 5/4 and in between 7/4?
I'm not sure... maybe more 3/4 and 5/8? I never actually worked out the timing formally
0:51 miss a part.... Try to sing and you will notice it
yeah, I really need to re-do this one - it was one of my first
@@JohnTurner61 but sound and tecnique is amazing!! Well done 🤩
@@davidearca9896 thx dude - but my newer stuff is much better - if you're so inclined check out the short John McLaughlin etude on 3 different guitars - pretty happy with those
