- We took a break from isolation to make the trip out to Austin, Texas for Optima Batteries’ Hi-Performance Expo at the Circuit of the Americas last November. We’ll be featuring several of our favorite cars from the event so make sure you’re subscribed and getting our notifications!
In this one we have Robert Thorne and his awesome ROCKET POWERED S2000! There’s not an actual rocket sticking out the back of it; rather, it’s the anti-lag system he built for the turbo! Join Mike Kojima as he talks to Robert about that and the rest of this awesome Honda!

"I bet you he's got more than a $100,000 under the hood of that car"
Lol! Oh the memories :D, I bet he really cleans up at Race Wars!
Motec Jet Exhaust comes with a ECU
😂
"ahuh"
"Uh huh, gonna lay down the pink slip just like you "
That banned WRC technology. 🙌🏽
"I have to pee so i have to go" is Moto IQ's version of Hoonigans "that's a WRAPPP"
Better be Mikes new sign off from now on
4,000 miles straight race without any issue.
4,000mile = 6438KM!!
That incredible number you can travel all around Malaysia.
Love that rocket anti lag, such a rare setup.
Damn. He figured out an equivalent of the Subaru WRC rocket anti lag.
Like a 90’s Subaru WRC car, the whole car is sweet.
🤯🤯..one of da baddest Turbo s2k’s on da planet.🤯🤯
I'll be looking forward to the article on the anti-lag.
I think they have covered this in the past. Something about ex-Prodrive engineer. It was a really cool article too.
I'm looking forward to a rocket anti-lag kit!
@@amizhamx yes it was a friend of Eric hsu I believe. It is very good article.
@@andrewhufman8620 motoiq.com/external-combustion-rocket-anti-lag-system-jdm-spec-c-impreza-sti/
anydaynow we offer the kit for clients, but it’s really complex. Only made 3 till now.
That's some amazing engineering, what a beast of a car! Keep up the great vids Mike, love listening to you geek out on this stuff!
Mike! Man you're always putting us on to the coolest tech! That anti-lag! HyperCo perches! First i've heard someone mention running them and i've always wondered how effective people feel they are.
Damn that’s an impressive and innovative build. How’d he do at the competition?
5th place.. about 1/2 a second off the fastest time.
Hell Yeah Brother!!
Hell yeah brother tire stickers! Love it
Thanks for this.
The seats from this CR are in my S2000. :)
HOLY ROCKET BATMAN!!!
this car is insane!
I’ve seen this in person and it’s just awesome and the owner not a bad guy too.
Very nice car, must be a insane thing to drive!
That’s pretty damn impressive...
Damn that thing scoots!
He has his a video about the antilag setup, its called bad wolf antilag s2000
Also one of the most untidy least respected S2K's out there. Come on dude show it more love... these things are becoming more rare by the min
Nice
Oh brother, he's got Cleetus' Hell Yeah Brother tire stencils.
Hell Yeah Brother!
Impressive car. Short message because i also have to pee. Gotta go!
Sounds like Bob Lazar explaining his corvette.
New video with all the details on how it worked. ua-cam.com/video/qpJYQ9Fydso/v-deo.html
Engine life is all about keeping the excessive torque down not turbo efficiency alone. I have stock bottom end civic type r’s that supposedly blow up at 400 making up to 620 reliably.
the most impressive part is keeping the temps in the low 180's. how?
PWR makes amazing radiators and coolers
@@mikecullingford9717 video showed a Koyo radiator... PWR thing is the intercooler
It’s not just about getting a big radiator. Its about efficiently getting the air through it.
E100 cools the engine also a lot. I want a rocket anti-lag for my Lancer Evolution V 💎👌🏻🥳 for the moment I got severe lag...
🙏🙏
What is this super reliable masterpiece?!
🔥👍🏻
Where is this car today?
😮
wasnt robert thorne a driver for KPAX racing in pirelli world challenge? or was it RealTime Racing he was with?
Yep KPAX! :)
I did this ten years ago and can’t find my notes - but the force of (assumed but within magnitude) cylinder pressures of 500hp out of a F20c were significantly smaller then the peak piston acceleration at 9k rpm, hence the reliable bottom end.
peak torque at 3k though
I wonder how much does the rocket anti-lag affects the longevity of the turbo.
It will shorten it for sure. Depending on how severe the anti-lag is, i.e. how high are the exhaust gas temps and for how long . There is a reason WRC cars would change turbos every event.
This car would win SORTED.
It would def do more than 1-2 hot laps before breaking down lol
nope. The interior looks like full race car, it has a manual sequential, and the suspension seems to be race car stiff. It would score lower than the twin turbo viper. That would make it lose Sorted.
@@sepg5084 this car competed on one lap of America, not sure what sorted is but I’m sure it would do well. Robert is an incredibly talented driver and all his cars are dialed
Damn That car Looks so fun unfortunately I have a heavy foot and will probably crash it in a week :/ .... atleast has im honest 😂🙁
One thing that's really special about it is that it's a 4-cylinder running 750 horsepower, but then again I ran about 8:25 out of a stock quad 4
did yours have zero lag? because this has zero lag
I also have a similar system up an working on my project car since last year, controlled by a MoTeC M880, in closed loop targeting turbo rpm. Check my channel.
Don't do it Jessy 😑 we're his last words
fuck it imma go bankrupt and turn my miata into a small s2k
They need a new interview guy lol
That poor CR 😭😭
Did anyone catch the interviewer was slow talking and really had no clue as to what he was talking about?
Yes he is really stupid.
Bro is so shocked by a reliable 750 on stock bottom end cuz he works on Subarus lmao
wow, the interviewer does not sound enthusiastic AT ALL. it's like the driver of the s2k was talking to a boomstick.
Leave the fella alone, you can tell he loves the subject deeply, I think he’s just slightly on the spectrum or something, but he doesn’t have to be an over the top stereotypical yank tv presenter if that doesn’t come naturally to him.
@@Jonathan_Doe_ fair enough
watch his other videos before you speculate on his character. He's monotone by nature. That's not an indictment of his enthusiasm. He chose to expose this car because he appreciates it
I don’t want to be that guy, but I don’t see any one else going there so screw it. I call BS. You’re making 700 hp at 3000 rpm with REAL rally spec Anti lag. All on stock I beam rods while running consistent hot laps? No chance no way she’s holding together. Maybe I’m wrong, it would be cool if I am. But if I had to bet I’d say she’s built and your playing with class rules or something. That being said SUPER cool car. Real anti lag though? Amazing
He's making the same torque at 3krpm as redline, not the same hp. So roughly 425tq.
@@khiemdinh842 I think this is the key here. It's a high revving engine with "relatively" low torque at 425. High RPM limit makes the power figure look massive.
600 HP on a s2k f20/f22 stock engine is normal bud. Its Forged from factory. Now the trans and diff is the weak point. Torque that low is a different story .
He also admitted that he has two engines available. I have a feeling his definition of reliable and yours are probably two different things. He didn't claim to have put 100,000 miles on this engine in this configuration. As pointed out, 600 hp is pretty common out of stock block s2000's. Most do not hold up to track abuse but most of those systems are not thought out nearly as well as this build. I believe the most common issue with FI stock block s2000s is that Honda uses tight bearing clearances. It's very possible that he has altered the clearances as well. I agree that I think there is not complete information in this video but to blatantly call BS is not supported either.
ua-cam.com/video/qpJYQ9Fydso/v-deo.html
I’m sorry. This an interesting car, but if you add a turbo (or rocket) to your s2k, it ain’t an s2k anymore.
