I bought a JV in 82 brand new, I also tried a new Fender, sorry to trash the mythology but the Fender blew it away. I couldn't aford the extra money for the Fender so had to settle for the squier.
@@phildale8451i think there were quite a few tiers of JV production (and i'm not sure the higher tiers were generally exported out of japan, possibly to stop competing with USA made product)?
Cool comparison video! I love your playing. The maple neck give more brilliant sound to the amp! the samurai know how to build guitars! Marzio from Milano Italy
Beautiful playing here! My JV Squier strat from this era has a rosewood fingerboard and the pole pieces on the pickups are flat rather than staggered. It hums a lot but the tone and sustain on mine is incredible. Mine also has the 5 way switch stock. Your JV pickups have a great sparkle to them.
Got an SQ -83, better than all American fenders I’ve tried and I’ve tried quite many over the years. The best two guitars I’ve ever used is my SQ and my ESP Eclipse 1 CTM. Sold almost all other guitars.
I saw a used Squier JV at Guitar Center for a ridiculously high price, and at the time I didn’t know what a JV was. I assumed it was some rare Squier. It played very nicely. I kinda regret not buying it, but I couldn’t afford it at the time anyways. Whoever owned it maintained it very well.
How are you possibly getting the bridge and neck pickups on at the same time ? Not possible without extra switching that I know the JV does not have. Im sure its just a typo . Great playing and great comparison
As far as i know the jv series was 82 and 83 then it was the sq series 83 and 84 and so on. The series goes off off the serial numbers. I also thought the jv series had a 4 bolt neck then when they went to the sq series they went to a 3 bolt neck.
I'd have a jv squier 80s strat over a u.s.a fender any day even the squier made japan strats from the early 90s are brilliant. I have a 93 black squier strat from japan its more or less a silver series but after the removed the title on the headstock silver series .
I've owned two Sq Squiers, still have one. I also have a JV with a rosewood board. so I was hoping I'd prefer the Squier. But, to my ears the Fender has more depth. Especially on single notes. Perhaps this is the rosewood fingerboard...?
The USA by a mile. I had a JV bought it new in 82, after discovering how much they are going for I cashed in 7 years ago. JV's are no better than a Squire classic vibe of today and in many respects they are not as good as the CV. The JV pickups were horribly bright and I tried everything to get it to stay in tune and eventually gave up. The hype surrounding JV's I believe is created on the web. I know many players who cashed in as they are just not worth the silly money.
@@phildale8451 All guitars are different as you must know. I have a deluxe strat, a 77 strat, a G&l legacy supreme, and several other strat style guitars ie Ibanez blazer, Peavey falcon etc and my JV Strat is better than all the others!!!
I have a JV strat E series since 1989, i bought Brand new and It has electronic problems, The pots and The selector don't work properly. It's a Fiesta red model with rosewood fretboard. The Gotoh bridge and afinators model.
Mine was an 82 JV and it was riddled with issues from day 1 especially the electronics and most of the hardware. I really dont understand the big deal.
I,m lucky enough to own some nice Guitars,,but my number 1 gig guitar for over 25 years is my 1982 JV Squier,,it's previous owner was the late great Stuart Adamson,,I only got the shell,,no pick ups,,, I had The maple Fretboard radius flattened,,,a 22cnd fret added,,jumbo frets fitted,,Seymour Duncan humbucker and 2 stacked single coils,,no hum !! Sperzel locking tuners to finish it off,,the neck is unrivalled by any guitar I've ever tried and it,s tone for solo,s is unbelievable,,,I will never ever part with it !!
it might be similar to my early 80's... I believe it is JV body and pickups, but with '83 USA neck, which at the time had 12" radius, like some of the 80's Japan Standard Strat's also had. I have one of those also, and neck is very similar to the '83 Standard USA (i think it's from the "two-knob" USA Strat model.
it's probably necessary to give a bit of context to this though. While I'm sure the Squier is a very nice instrument, it's still considered the lower end of the Japanese JV's. Even the regular Japan Fender JV's come in different levels. The "fairest" comparison would be a JV - 115 vs the US model of your choice. www.21frets.com/squier_jv/domesticjv.htm Fender "JV" doesn't mean one kind of guitar. There are many in the range. Far too many westerners will hear a low end MIJ guitar as the "example" and then think they don't compare to a US model.
I'm glad you mentioned that, as a lot of people comment as if there is one tier or level of JV Strat. I believe there must have been at least 3 or even 5 tiers, and domestic vs. export models, with different pickups (USA, Japan, Alnico, Ceramic etc)
Dude you chord choices and presentation kills most large channels. You know how to A/B stuff properly too. Thank you for the effort. Subbed
I found a JV strat in a cupboard at my High school. It’s so good compared to every other guitar they have.
It was talked about at the time in music stores in the early 80's that the Japanese Squires were of a higher quality than the USA fenders.

AWESOME JOB PLAYING MAN...GLAD TO SEE YOU POSTING VIDEO'S MY FRIEND....LEFT A LIKE!!!!
Thanks my friend. I had a bit of a break as I got married. Looking to make more vids this year for sure.
I had a squire 1984 from japan with rosewood and same color , so nice . I didn't know what I do now.
I looked at it as a Jimi Hendrix guitar.
Watched again for your lovely playing. Thanks
The necks on the Japanese ones are fantastic. I have an SQ MIJ and I really enjoy it.
Congratulations, the japaneese SQ Series ist still fantastic. Mine is Made in 1984 and ist became One of my workhorses!
Hello from the future, 3 years ago you said you have a SQ MIJ , hopefully you have 3 or more , if not pull your socks up. All the best

I've seen 3 bolt neck JV strats with bullet truss rod etc.
Late JV’s with serials starting at 9- were produced through first half of ‘84 as well.
@@malcolmhardwick4258 That would be one for the domestic (Japan) market, rather than the export version (4 bolt) for the US

I have a maple neck tobacco sunburst 57. It's a nice guitar.
The JV strat is just so well put together. The comparison should at least have both been on a maple necks though.

Both sound great, different but great. It seems to me that the newer strat is trying to sound like the older strat. Like a copy vs. the original.
JV sounds much brighter, or harsher. May be the maple vs rosewood though.
Phillip Robinson Zinc big block, too.
Tone wood is a myth
Agree
I wanna learn to play like that :((
beautiful playing

USA wins. JV sounds to harsh.
Very subjective. Not for me
There is a tone nob on the guitar. I always have it rolled off a bit. If the JV sounds brighter it just means there's a larger tonal range.
I had an 82 JV from new and could never use the bridge pickup because of the harshness.
