    We also raw feed our cav and it was the BEST thing we have ever done for him. He loves it, he literally dances when we are carrying his bowl. On top of that there are no more leaky eyes, better poos, great coat and he easily maintains a healthy weight. Keep it up😊 Judy Morgan's pup loaf is a great place to start if you want to make your own, we just leave it uncooked!

    That is so awesome you are switching to raw! I have been feeding my pup raw since he was 4 months old, and he is now almost a year old. The benefits have been fantastic and my pup loves his food.
    When I first started feeding raw, I started with the pre-made patties just like you. After a month or two I starting making homemade because it was a whole lot cheaper. I was really nervous to go homemade because I didn’t want to mess anything up lol. I tried to get everything absolutely perfect with the percentages and supplements etc. I stressed myself out. So now, I have just taken a step back and relaxed. It really doesn’t have to be perfect. I shoot for general percentages, and make sure my dog gets a variety of meats, bone, and organs. I supplement with fish oil, eggs, coconut oil, and Nupro Dog Supplement occasionally. Not all of these everyday. Some days, he gets no supplements, other days he gets a few of them. I think the key is just variety.
    So if you ever do go homemade...don’t stress yourself out. In the wild, a dog would not get the perfect percentage of food everyday. Just a few helpful tips from a fellow raw feeder😁 Good luck!

      Thank you so much for the advice! That is some great information, thank you!!! We will definitely think about doing this. What kind of bones do you feed them? It makes me nervous to give them those.. I'm afraid of sharp bones and teeth breaking?

    • @lexihulick1155
      @lexihulick1155 5 років тому

      Herky The Cavalier For bones, I feed mainly chicken wings/feet/necks. My 15 pound dog can handle larger bones like duck and even turkey necks, but the small chicken bones are easiest for him to eat. Also quail and Cornish hen work great. Bones can be scary, but they are SO good for teeth! I’ve never had a problem.

    I am so happy to hear that you made the change and that you had these results. Your results are exactly what we found as well. Since we also feed our cavi that same dry food you did: Canisource, the cost was a bit higher. For those switching from grocery store brands the cost will be higher, but those foods are so awful to feed your dogs. You covered ALL the BARF (biologically appropriate raw food) points and your video did a great job explaining it all. The one piece of information I have found out about why vets are not supportive, and I am speaking about vets from Saskatchewan ... they get paid by pet food company to sell their products in their clinics and they only have aprox 1 - 3 days of education about dog food and its effects while they are in collage. That's it.
    CONGRATS!!! great video. LOL i said their poops would be better.

    • @herkythecavalier
      @herkythecavalier 5 років тому +4

      me4getz oh I totally agree on the fact that some vets are definitely biased! Most vet clinics all carry the same crappy brands of food. I was so appalled when our vet suggested we switch Herky to a high sodium diet to make her drink more water... because she had slightly elevated salts in her urine ?! Ugh. I’m so glad about this new raw diet and hope to see great changes in the future ❤️

      @@herkythecavalier - we were told the same thing once as well. And then they suggested we take our cavi off Cani-source to their food as theirs claims to clean their teeth better. Looking at their small round kibble, that he would just swallow whole and not chew, compared to cani-sourse and their larger rugged pieces that would clean their teeth so much more. Vets sometimes make me frustrated. We decided to add beef or chicken broth to his water to make him drink more water. Worked like a charm.

    When traveling, I recommend getting freeze dried or air dried raw food! It makes it so much easier and less of a hassle being worried about bacteria. You just add a little water to it when it’s ready to be fed.

    Please don’t go back to dry kibble. I have been feeding my three Cav’s homemade meals for a couple of years and haven’t looked back. Two of my dogs are corn intolerant and all are wheat intolerant. That knocks out most dog food brands. They would end up with blood or excess mucus in their stool and vomit from time to time. Took a while and a lot of analysis and deduction to figure this out. I ended up making their meals. I don’t have the problems anymore. I would suggest also feeding sardines as well. They are a great superfood for Cavs/dogs. It is not hard feeding complete meals (and making them yourself). My daughter eats the dog food from time to time (cooked stew) when she is home from college. It is really healthy for all of us. I’ll eat it as well. Now that is what I call “human grade” dog food.

    • @j.u.4688

      Herky The Cavalier, I give them both actually. I have a stew I make up that is 75% meat, 10% organs, 15% vegetables and fruits. That is breakfast every day. Dinner is sardines (packed in water or olive oil) with my stew on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The other days’ dinners are raw buffalo style chicken wings/drumsticks chopped up with my stew. No seasoning of course. All meals are 1/4 cup. My two dogs weigh between 16 and 19 pounds. My puppy is just 8 pounds.
      The stew has three table spoons of coconut oil, three table spoons of olive oil, cup of chicken stock (Progresso because it doesn’t contain garlic or onions), spinach, mustard greens, colored peppers. That is the standard every week. I switch between broccoli, carrots, cauliflower with peas, beens, and squash every other week. The meat is 2lbs. of skinless chicken breast, 2lbs. of skinless chicken thighs, 1 1/2 lbs. of chicken gizzards and hearts, one turkey breast, half cup of chicken liver. Fruits are dried cranberries, fresh/frozen blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, apples. I usually pick just three equaling half cup. All in all it makes 4 quarts. I cook on low in a crock pot. I keep all the juices for them as well. Also, I include two tablespoons of crushed eggshells in it as well. It comes out well.
      I give them table food as well while we are eating or when my wife and I are preparing dinner. Just as treats. Raw meat, carrots, broccoli. Nothing seasoned. It has forced us to eat better as well. By preparing their meals, it was easy for me to figure out what foods they were intolerant to.

      asvinni thanks. It’s not hard after you have prepared meals for them a few times. You get into a rhythm. I make a batch once a week for them. I didn’t have much of a choice because my dogs could not eat most commercial dog food. Commercial dog food would keep causing inflammatory problems for them. Preparing meals for them made it easy for me to figure out what food was irritating them.

    Here in Germany, you also get full meals frozen (like meat including everything else the dog needs). We add a bit of powder for more calcium and stuff and also some salmon (good for the heart, I hope and Laila just loves fish). I did the switch between kibbles and raw instantly and had no problems. Laila has always been picky with her food:
    When I first got her, she wouldn't eat the kibbles the breeder gave us for her. We got something else and she ate that.
    But she would only eat the same type of kibble for two weeks, after that not wanting to eat for two weeks before she was so hungry, she ate them again. I tried so many different kibbles and she never ate any on a regular basis. She lost 1.5-2kg in the two weeks she was not eating the kibbles!
    So I switched to raw and never had any issues with her not eating. She's just soaking it in like Herky is doing in the video.

    my plan for my future cavalier is to do an equal balance of raw and dry foods freezer space is an issue in my house because my sister will go out and buy all these frozen dinners that go in our deep freezer and no one eats them she’s a huge coupon person i do feel her dog Fox should go on a raw diet because he has a hard time eating dry food because his teeth are really bad but he doesn’t eat all his food at once like most dogs he tends to kinda graze through the night. so freezer space is the main issue i have i’ve looked at freshpet brand stuff that’s made here in the US i have friends who feed it to their dogs and they absolutely love it

We have 3 baby gates and keep her in the kitchen when we are away. This is true with about anything whatever you own in life owns you. Cavalier's are very loving but also very needy when it comes to wanting attention. Then again our dog is only 9 months old, but she is an adorable constant companion when we are at home.

      Olivia Judd unfortunately most vets are biased because they are sponsored by food companies that push dry kibble. If you haven’t noticed, all vets usually have the same brands of food. Royal Canin, Science Diet, Hills. All crappy foods.

      Listen to your heart & gut! My vet recommended Purina Pro plan and now look...they are in a class action lawsuit.

    So have you tried raw food where it's like drumsticks or breasts?

    Hey sweetie! I was recently reading up on the raw diet, and I read that we're not supposed to give them the meat while it's frozen still, because the cold temp can damage the intestines (I can't remember the exact details.). Anyhow, obviously you're feeding them the meat fully thawed, but the pumpkin was still frozen. Is it just the meat that needs to be thawed, because of digestion time?

    Raw is overrated right now. If it works for your dog, GREAT, continue feeding it. HOWEVER, there’s no need to feed it whatsoever. Feed what works for your dog, whether that’s kibble, homemade cooked, or raw.
    Also, raw isn’t “biologically appropriate”. That’s a myth. Dogs are also not descendants of wolves.
    Just feed a well balanced diet, whatever format you choose. That’s all that matters.

      Really? All my evolution literature sites wolves. Different kinds of wolves be they prehistoric or not (as per recent proposals) are still wolves.
