    "Stay within the scope of your practice": I love this guy! thanks for your service brother. You did a fantastic job breaking it all down in a humble & honest manner. This last part about staying humble is very true. A lot of cats in the industry running around thinking they are doctors, Dieticians & know it ALL's. They don't realize that even "Experts" of any field require continued education and more practice to always excel forward.

Try to get fit at 69 and over 300 lbs with bad knees and feel like I got duped into a personal trainer program that does not take into consideration my physical condition and was wondering about what knowledge they had. @@JPFitnessPro I watched your video after the fact of signing up for a personal trainer program. I didn't even know to ask about certification. I went back today to rescind my membership and talked with the manager of the gym who has a college degree and after listening to my ailments told me to stay off the tread mill because it was too hard on my joints and he showed me another machine - a glider that would best be suited for my bad knees. The first guy was selling a product and was not listening to me as his client and what would be best for an old guy like me. Had to use my cane today and I haven't had to use it for several months.

    Okay so you do a good job of describing acsm cert. Here is what I know from what I've heard from professors. Acsm you don't need a whole bunch of certs to do alot with any topic and that is why they don't offer them. One of my professors hired a personal trainer at his gym who gets paid 55 dollars an hour because she specializes in yoga and has the acsm cpt and group fitness cert. She didn't need to get an additional cert for yoga to specialize. Also, acsm you have to get so many educational credits every year in order to maintain certification. I would not be surprised if the same thing is true for other kinds of certifications.

    • @JPFitnessPro
      @JPFitnessPro 7 років тому

      C M yup, almost all, or all of the other certs require continuing credits. but that might be the case with acsm, they are a good company!

    • @JPFitnessPro
      @JPFitnessPro 5 років тому +1

      You're welcome. Certs will have varying opinions, from people who like them and people who don't. Like I said, if you plan to train people in sport specific movements, NSCA is the way to go. What's really cool about them is they are only 1 of 2 companies (to my knowledge) that actually offer an advanced training cert that requires a degree to take

    • @spaghettispoon
      @spaghettispoon 5 років тому

      JP Fitness I actually didn't know this curriculum was geared towards training athletes til after the fact. I want to be a trainer for all kinds of people, and eventually a nutritionist, do you think I'll need to pursue the NASM too? I'm really not interested in training athletes specifically :/

    • @spaghettispoon
      @spaghettispoon 5 років тому

      JP Fitness and yes I think NSCA is the one that you can continue on to a kinesiology degree if I'm not mistaken

    • @JPFitnessPro
      @JPFitnessPro 5 років тому +1

      @@spaghettispoon no you can train all sorts of people. All standard CPT certs give you the tools you need to help people lose weight, gain muscle, increase cardio vascular fitness, stay flexible, help you learn basic anatomy, muscle physiology, etc. What I meant by that is that it has a slight preference for training athletes. You don't need another cert though if your goal is to train general population

But would refer to a CPT that could best help that client.Thanks!

  • @TanjaNinic
    @TanjaNinic 7 років тому +1

    I am specializing in calisthenics (bodyweight training - it's kind of a mix of gymnastics and streetworkout- I do ring routines, like muscleups, levers(front lever, back lever, planche,...) and also handbalancing and trainig with bars (for example in streetworkout parks)). That's for upper body. For legs I am mainly focused on weightlifting (mostly just squats and deadlift), but I also practice bodyweight exercises, like pistol squats, dragon pistol squats and shrimp. Everything I do is mainly oriented to reach maximum strength (1 rep max) and not so much towards aesthetics. I have a bachelors degree in biology.
    So I kinda ruled ACE, NASM and NCSF out, because they seem either too easy or too aesthetics- oriented. Now I can't really decide between the NSCA and ACSM. I definetely like the fact that NSCA is more performance- oriented, as this is my main goal in training and I'm mostly interested in that. But ACSM seems really interesting too, due to my biology bacground (I've learned a lot of anatomy and physiollogy in-depth in college), and I already know a lot about performance - programming in my field of training, because I read some books about this topic. What do you recommend?

    • @JPFitnessPro
      @JPFitnessPro 7 років тому +1

      Tanja Ninić Tanja Ninić even though you have read some books about performance, I would still have to say the NSCA. acsm is a great organization but what you seem to be aimed at is more of the performance side of things, for example understanding how bioenergetics plays into strength training, or how the stretch shortening cycle can help you increase your strength. also, since you have a bachelor's degree, you could just jump right up to the NSCA's elite certification called the Certified Strength and Conditioning specialist (CSCS). Only people with a bachelor's degree can take this test (it's pretty difficult). I have a video comparing the only 2 higher end certifications out there if you check on my channel.

    Awesome video! I'm currently trying to decide between ACE and NASM and your video really helped break it all down. Thank you! Quick question, I am not a test taker never have been and one of of the trainers at my gym mentioned ISSA. Is that certification accredited? Or what are your thoughts on that program? Again thank you for this great video.

    • @JPFitnessPro
      @JPFitnessPro 7 років тому +3

      Chelsea 1. the ISSA is accredited by the DEAC. this is not the same institution that the other certification organizations are accredited by (they are by the NCCA). how much this plays a factor in whether or not you should go with them depends on what you are trying to do. if you plan to work at a gym, make sure that gym will accept that cert. if it does, then if it makes you feel more comfortable due to the open book format the ISSA provides, then go with that one. ultimately, personal trainer certs do have there differences, but the cert does not make the trainer, the trainer makes their self. so if you do go the ISSA route, don't take the open book format for granted, always seek to learn new info, and be the best you can be as a CPT.

I want to learn how to apply good composition to achieve these goals. I'm only at the start of this but hope to train athletes at a more advanced level. I'm looking at where I should begin and what certification would fit best. Not much into weight equipment training quite yet. Mainly a full balance of applications to produce a body weight training fitness program.

    Excellent video. I was looking into NCSF before watching your video. I was also looking into ISSA. Several people asked your opinion on ISSA. Can you review the certification from ISSA. I know Fred Hatfield is involved and he was a good Powerlifter. It's accredited through DEAC which is approved by colleges. it has an open book test but it has 6 essays and 2 case studies where you have to design a program for them and the usual multiple choice. It doesn't sound that easy. I'm definitely not interested in ACSM and NSCA too technical for me. I browsed their textbook and no dice man.
    It would be great if you could review ISSA and IFPA(International Fitness professionals Association) Thanks for the video and thank you for your service.

    Very informative and funny video! Coming from a completely different background (nothing medical nothing sports), would you say the ACE is the best place to get started? I am hoping to teach Yoga, Pilates, and cardio dance classes, and train non-athletes.

      Xinye Z. Liu from what i just checked, yes. the other certs are great in their own ways, but based off of what you just mentioned, ACE seems to fit great. they have the group fitness certification, plus they have a "mind body" specialty course aimed at teach yoga and pilates. they also have many other training specialty courses.
      nsca is more sports oriented, ncsf has a bit of everything, acsm seems to lean towards more of the medical side, and nasm is your typical big chain gym cert. none of these certs though match what your goals are besides ACE. remember, when it comes to NCCA accredited certs, there are no dramatic differences between them, just small differences. but ACE seems to match your goals well

    With 5 years of basic knowledge learned threw UA-cam and personal experiences with body building/nutrition/powerlifting. My small town local gym wants me to train for them groups and individuals even without a cert just off what they’ve seen and seen me do to help people. But I wouldn’t feel right I need to better my self and get some kind of cert to do that. I think ace would be fine. What do U think. I have a full time job this would only be on weekends/after work

    • @JPFitnessPro
      @JPFitnessPro 3 роки тому +1

      Based on who you train, you could get any major personal trainer certification that's accredited by the NCCA. Ace is fine. NSCA may be more up your alley since it is aimed for sports, but any will work fine.
      And your feelings are correct. While I do believe an individual learns a LOT through actual in person experience, continuing education and self teaching (like you), there is still knowledge and things to be learned from books and certifications. A good coach/trainer utilizes both personal experience + formal education (whether that be through certs or school). Anyone who takes one side and one side only is doing themselves and their clients a disservice.
      What I would do is pick any cert, read the material with an open mind, and don't be afraid to change stances on something that sounds like it makes sense. But also stand by your personal experience when you feel it makes sense as well. Certification organizations are not correct in everything and still have their own biases

    thanks for the video.alot of good info and stuff to take into consideration.I just have one question.Whats your opinion on NESTA? is it a good certification what type of things have you heard about it?good or bad?

    • @JPFitnessPro
      @JPFitnessPro 7 років тому +1

      I have heard of it before but not too much. I just looked it up for you, and it seems good and legit. its accredited by the NCCA which is like the third party governing body for training certs, it costs about the average price for a cert (which is good, a certification that is too cheap is kind of sketchy), they have a handful of specialty certs that you can use to get CEU's after you become certified, and their text book covers the basic things needed for a personal trainer.
      the only downsides that I could see without actually buying the book are that the specialty certs are kind of expensive, and that the text book they offer is only 14 chapters. Take this last part for a grain of salt, because im not sure how long their chapters are. also, you only have to recertify every 4 years which could be a good or bad thing depending on the trainer. For a trainer who actively studies/keeps up to date on their knowledge, this is a good thing. For a trainer who needs to be "held responsible" because they tend to be lazy, this is a bad thing because you could potentially have trainers who havent studied for 3+ years and are "certified". overall though, they seem to have everything a training cert requires and they get the thumbs up from me

      LIKE ESPORTES if you are getting your bachelors, I recommend taking the CSCS. it is the certified strength and Conditioning Specialist cert from the NSCA. they also have a CPT cert (which I talked about in the video) but the CSCS is more of a high end certification. only people who have a bachelor's can take the exam. I have a video about it. as for a job, there are many ways you can get a job, just depends on your goals

      chauncey phillips if that is what you think, cool. I am certified through the NCSF and most forums I read online say that ACE is easy and that NCSF is more on the difficult side. but either way, a certification doesn't make you a good or bad trainer

    I'm looking to become a parkour coach and trainer. Which certification is good for me? I'd like to get you're opinion. I also enjoy learning nutrition which I feel I'm personally adept in.

    • @JPFitnessPro
      @JPFitnessPro 7 років тому

      Parkour is something that is heavily based on being athletic- if that is your goal, I would go with NSCA's personal trainer cert or there CSCS cert (you need a bachelors degree to take the CSCS exam though). remember that none of the certs I went over actually cover parkour training in and of itself- they cover topics related to fitness. But the NSCA certs cover more athletic based things such as plyometrics, athletic drills, etc.
      I havent looked much at the nutrition certifications from any of these companies, but as anthony said in the comments above, NSCA also has a sports nutritionist book. The NCSF has one as well.

    Hey bud. Great video. Just had a quick question. I'm an ACE certified trainer and seriously considering the ncsf csc( certified strength coach I think) as cscs is purely for athletes. How do you think that certification is? Any suggestions would help. Thanks

    • @JPFitnessPro
      @JPFitnessPro 3 роки тому

      Ive seen it before, and I just checked out the summary/chapter topics. It seems like a good trainer certification for those who want an emphasis on strength and sport development. It seems oriented for athletes too though, so if you didnt want to do the CSCS because of that, then this one might not suit you well either (it does have some other content to help you be a "well rounded" trainer, but it is definitely suited to training athletes. Also, for the CSCS, I believe you need a bachelors degree to acquire that certification. In this regard, the csc from the NCSF seems to be more entry level compared to the CSCS.
      Finally, I want to stress that while certifications have their differences, and you should pick a cert aimed towards what you want to do, a cert will should never Pidgeon-hole you into training a certain way. You could have the CSCS cert and train powerlifters, for example, or even just general population. It might be "weird" but some people just like learning. Plus you can always learn from outside sources, which is going to make up the bulk of your learning anyways

    Was wondering if u could give a feedback on the CPT&SNS (Sport Nutrition Specialist) certification package with NCSF? Is It RECOMMENDABLE To Go For A Package cert OR Is It Better To Take One After The other? And why?
    Thanks in advance for yr feedback?

    • @JPFitnessPro
      @JPFitnessPro 7 років тому

      I haven't tried the SNS myself, but if you are interested in sports nutrition I would give it a go. if you had to pick one to do first, I would definitely go with the CPT. it covers a little of everything, including nutrition, so it is definitely a great base to start at. if you don't plan on doing any personal training then I you could just go with the SNS

    • @angiekim9075
      @angiekim9075 7 років тому

      Thanks for yr quick response. My question was rather if it's recommendable to go with the package as it requires u to take both exams within 6 months? I don't have any specific pre-knowledge in the field but I'm very good in self study, got a BA in business. My concern was if it's a good deal as it is sold on the website or better to do both cert separate? I def want to go for both certs.

    • @JPFitnessPro
      @JPFitnessPro 7 років тому +1

      if you want to go for both certs and you have confidence in your abilities in studying, then yes i would go for both. Just remember if you have no previous knowledge in fitness, such as things like biomechanics, bioenergetics, nutrition, muscle physiology, etc. then doing all of that at one time may be kind of hard. But if you are good at self study, read fast, and dont mind studying atleast 5-7 hours a week then you can get it done. Use any tools you have, like having somebody else quiz you, use flashcards to remember the anatomy portion, etc. You will learn a lot as ncsf has great certs.
