I used to play drums professionally. The gloves are so he doesn't mangle his hands on the set hardware. There's nothing friendly to bare skin on a drum set. When you're playing hard, one accidental contact with the hardware can take u out for the night. Primarily cymbal slices and drum rims are the culprits. You can really hurt yourself. Any drummer will confirm the danger the set itself poses to your hands.
My only question is: And Dream Theater chose Mike Mangini over Aquiles Priester to replace Mike Portnoy because...why? Certainly not because Mike Mangini's a better drummer or more interesting to watch than Aquiles.

NathanDrums I thought Paiste stopped with that colored cymbal shit back in 80's with the end of the ColorSound line.... I bought a ColorSound China (used, in the color green) for my little practice kit in my basement (I used and still use Zildjian on my work/gig/live kit) years back and it sounded like it was taped up to muffle it. That color coating dulls and acts as a muffler to the natural ring of the cymbal. Why drummers use them I dunno .... but hey, if a cymbal company approached me and said that I can have all the free color coated cymbals I wanted for nothing if I will endorse them, then I guess I'd be playing shitty sounding color coated cymbals.....

I was lucky enough to see Priester and Portnoy on the same night. My two all time favs! Also was able to get autographed sticks from both.

I love mega bell rides, but these one is to small, he should use 20" or 22" mega bell ride.
He's a very good drummer, but very mechanical. He looks stiff when playing and his playing sounds it. Great drummer, just kinda boring.
And he doesn’t play like an American or Brazilian, those ones that he lived, learned and played.
