Waltz in Black and White A waltz commonly references a ‘ballroom dance’, performed primarily in ¾, also known as ‘triples’. That’s why the page has three dice. I think. Maybe. Possibly. Perhaps. The dance is also commonly associated with constant turns, which is somewhat notable on the second and third die of both pages. 2. The backgrounds of The Black Silence’s Reception The BG used in the reception changes the further you get into the fight, and some of these I noticed don’t get that much interpretation, so I thought I’d provide mine. The first phase simply uses the background of the floor you used to receive Roland, but every other phase changes it up a little. The second phase is clearly based on the Smoke War, you can see fumes right at the bottom, and of course there’s the enemies that are clearly designed after what Roland witnessed with Salvador. The third phase is based on his and Angelica’s confrontation of the Blood-Red Night. The background looks straight up pulled from the Binah Realization CG. The fourth and final phase is a representation of Roland’s world after he lost Angelica. Barren, empty and monotone. A desolate place, with nothing to live for. 3. Prière pour aimer la douleur A man drifts down the gutter. A club that belonged to a stranger. A limb that belonged to a nemesis. A dagger that belonged to a colleague. A lance that belonged to a friend. The two I want to talk about are the dagger and the lance. The lance is pretty prominent in mythology surrounding *Astolfo* - a golden, magical lance. And…I’d say that at this point, Astolfo would probably be the only ‘friend’ to Roland, which makes him fit the bill perfectly. What truly intrigued me was the dagger. A colleague? Perhaps, someone from Charles’ Office? But who? I’ve scoured the internet on the Paladins, but I could never really find a full list of each paladin and their weapon. The only ones that really come to mind are - Roland - Durandal (Longsword) Olivier - Hauteclaire (Greatsword) Renaud - Froberge (Sword) Astolfo - ‘Golden Lance’ (i couldn’t find a name for his weapon) Ogier - Cortain (Short Sword) At least, that’s all that comes to mind right now as I’m writing this. You can see why I didn’t use some of these - they were either really really short, or something I’m not well versed on. PLEASE SOMEONE COVER THE WEAPON THING I NEED TO KNOW So...a short update here - real life is catching up a little, so I decided to just quickly rush out a video before my exams and test collapse on me. Some people are saying that the Korean version writes 'Veteran Fixer' rather than 'Color', but I don't speak Korean >:L so I'll wait for official confirmation from Cool Kids. @@daxfer2945 I think I know what you're talking about - "the world where I was a Color", this line in particular was what threw shade at the 'Roland is not a color' thing. It honestly triggers me to see this line. It somewhat contradicts the Artbook notes. "That's why most people were unable to recognize Roland when he was using his wife's gloves, mistaking him for the Black Silence." "In the game, we intentionally left the existence and identity of the Black Silence vague. Whether Roland was actually the true Black Silence or not was irrelevant to Angela during the final act of the story. Although he wasn't a Color, Roland still had the skills to earn the trust of Charles and take the role of the leader in his Office." -Kim Jihoon These are two lines, nearly back-to-back, that almost outright state that Roland is NOT the Black Silence. Sure, the second one could point to Roland obtaining the color after leaving Charles' Office, such as after he 'silences the pianist', but there is NO WAY there is any other explanation for the first line if Roland was The Black Silence. I...do think there are several explanations as to why they wrote it this way, though. Roland, first of all - perceives himself as The Black Silence. There's a reason why his reception is named as such - and why he distorts in that way, as well. This is probably the likeliest explanation - after taking up the Gloves for himself, he truly believed he was continuing Angelica's legacy. Garnet went through the same trauma and then picked up this attitude as well, truly seeing himself as the Color. Or - possibly, Garnet always wielded the gloves, and thus was known as such. In exchange, Lapis was the one who wielded Durandal and the mask, before Garnet picked them up for himself. Or, maybe - Roland was The Black Silence for silencing the pianist. This is the generally accepted consensus among people who don't like the Angelica theory, but once again - "his wife's gloves, mistaking him for the Black Silence". Unless there has been some real wacky translation hijinks, it is factual that Roland is not a color. Everything in the *ARTBOOK* points to that being the case. And not just from the Developer Notes, either - Roland's character profile (where it states his grade) never reveals his Color title in all four versions, unlike EVERY OTHER COLOR in the game. Unless they retcon something, I really doubt that Roland was ever The Black Silence. It's likely that this falls under the first explanation.
Fun Fact, early in the game when Roland first mentions that Angelica was a fixer, we see a CG of her wearing the gloves of the Black Silence and using what I’m pretty sure is the Zelkova Workshop weapon. It is a super subtle detail that I didn’t catch until reading the art book.
Yeah! The Urban Plague intro introduces her after slaughtering what seems to be a group of people. It's pretty cool that they already kind of had plans - and it shows when Roland talks about the Pajeon, which is emphasized later in 'Fritter Called Jeon'.
@@HazIosefka Regarding the passive: it's a pretty simple explanation for Roland/Olivier. Neither one uses the Page/Deck they had as Charles' office fixers. Instead they're using decks associated with their new organization/wife. 12 Fixers represents Olivier being an exceptional fixer (because of his previous group) above the average Hana fixer. Roland lacks that because he's being hard carried by his wife's equipment and trying to mimic her fighting style, so his previous Fixer skill isn't factored in. Even Furioso is Roland trying to do a one man Waltz in Black/Waltz in White. During his boss fight, the passive abilities "A fighter that never retreats" and "Clenched Grudge" represent his actual personal influence on "Angelica's page". Tl:dr Olivier is Stronger than most Hana Fixers, Roland isn't as strong as his wife, hence why one gets the Passive and the other doesn't.
a little more about Roland. He was so capable of a fixer that Charles let him lead the Charles Office instead of himself. The reason why he isnt a Color is unknown but he is already capable as 1. so at the end of the day it doesnt really matter who's the Black Silence anyway.
Roland is right about him being a kick-ass Fixer. And I think the reason he’s not a Color is because his face is unknown, since being a color is basically advertising their identity.
@@LongNguyen-cz5ty I think one the reason Roland wasn't recognized as a color was because in his exploits with Angelica he would still always wear his mask. Along with the fact the black gloves mask all sound he was basically invisible in all his battles with angelica, kind of giving lots of credit that could've gone to Roland to Angelica instead.

To be fair, this is pretty much stated straight up. Roland's discomfort at having to interact with someone who could very well spill everything about him is spelled out, to the point where he's actively hostile towards her. Which is - how Roland's arc is resolved. He realizes that the hostility was unfair, that he constantly ran away from things without truly seeing them as they were. These were all themes that I wanted to explore in Roland video that actually talked about his arc rather than just random facts though 💀
Yeah, I think most people that are even *slightly* invested in Roland already know most of these~ That's why I try to dive a little bit deeper, with stuff with Durandal or other stuff about The Twelve Fixers. Honestly, I can't say I've ever felt bored watching one of my videos before I watched this one.
Roland is good with his Durandal and uses it most of the time (in most of the artworks), but other than that he specializes in everything (he has Learn abnormality page, and it is used even when you fight against his memory). The rarity of the card shows how good Roland is with the weapons as well. Green cards are weapons that he does not uses well but he uses the sword in Mook's Workshop skillfully because it's a sword. I do not know what kind of weapon is from Mook Workshop but it's more like a tool to surprise people and lower their defense, which Roland is pretty good at as well. Atelier Logic weapons are just expensive guns, and Wheels' weapons are used to finish off the enemy. In Angelica's Deck, Atelier Logic is a purple card, and Angelica uses it like a spear that can shoot paralyzing bullets. I think their guns are much more versatile than most people in the city think.
While I can see how you made your conclusions, I personally feel like we're drawing too many conclusions from circumstantial evidence, here. Using abnormality pages as a gauge of one's abilities is something quite suspect. I understand that Roland is a very 'generalized' character in terms of strength - but using abnormality pages as a reason is a little bit off. The pages are based off the Floor's books. 'The Floor of *General* Works'. In addition, Roland doesn't only use Learn in his distortion. He cycles between all abnormality pages. It just feels a little bit disingenuous. I do agree with your sentiment of Roland's common pages being what he doesn't specialize in, though. It's quite clear that there has always been a lot more potential in them with the third phase of the Black Silence's fight. Stuff like Zelkova inflicting bleed and recovering stagger, etc. I...don't think Atelier Logic is used the way you think it is by Angelica. The art is simply shared with her Allas Workshop - in her combat sprite, she simply uses them like Roland does. But yeah! She gets access to paralysis/bind with Atelier Logic. It's quite clear that most of The Black Silence's weapons never reach their full potential while wielded by Roland. Allas Workshop doesn't give strength and protection, and as mentioned - the paralysis with Atelier Logic, and Zelkova's bleed and stagger restore. I find your take on specific weapons quite odd, to be honest? Mook Workshop does damage that subverts resistances, but I would say it's quite far from a tool to *surprise*. Wheels also doesn't exactly feel like a finishing weapon to me, due to it's 'Clash Win - Destroy next Die' and following defensive die. I do understand how you derived certain deductions, but a lot of it is based on assumptions that we can't really be sure about unless ProjectMoon go out of their way to confirm some of these. Thanks for writing this, though - you've given me some perspective on a lot of things, especially on the 'use' of certain weapons. Something to think about~

@The Lonely Nerd Francis Jammes, the poet who created thoses prayers, really liked donkeys. I won't go any further in the rabbit hole after this, but he has a poem called "J'aime l'âne" (I like donkey).

I would say it's *not impossible*, though a little unlikely. The way he talks/treats The Purple Tear feels a little...weird, if it was the grandma who he followed the instructions of. "Damn it...The Purple Tear...Can't believe this is how she handled it..." In addition, when The Purple Tear goes to talk to Roland - it feels more like a 'meeting' between them, rather than a reunion. "Knock knock~ Are you there, kid with a pitch-black heart? I'm here to make an offer you can't possibly refuse...care to give it a listen?" The way Roland talks *about* the Purple Tear also feels more distant, as well. "An acquaintance of mine apparently began jumping between dimensions as a side effect of one of those experiments..." Acquaintance, huh? It just...doesn't sound right, at least to me. It is possible that she is indeed the grandma that he's referring to, but personally, I don't think that's the case.

The idea that it was Angelica who was the black silence and not roland is interesting, and it might have been possible: at least, originally. But at the very least, once Roland killed the Pianist, I'm pretty sure he became the black silence. What you said about the perception blocking mask explaining the loopholes could cover most of them, but there's a pretty big exception. In the final reception, where roland, binah, and gebura use their "true" decks, Roland still uses the same cards even without the mask and still has the passive "the black silence." I don't think you can really explain that one away: the title is his. At that point of the story, the characters that are fighting aren't using the library's power anymore, the cards are there because that's how the game's mechanics work. And while its not outright stated by the head, Baral does refer to him as "even you, of all people," indicating that as a fixer his level was either at or near the top. Which is what's mainly important for deciding a color, being recognized by the head.
I've discussed this a lot with different people, and it always comes back to the same conclusion - that Roland is likely considered The Black Silence now, even if he doesn't hold the title, and that doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. Here's the thing - it's almost certain that Angelica was the original Black Silence, or at least - was the person appointed the title of the Black Silence. There's a possibility that both Roland and Angelica held it, but due to Roland's grade not stating as such in the Artbook - and also the 'Silence' being named after a specific mechanic revolving around the gloves, I find it likely that Roland contributed to the title, but never got recognized for it. With what you mentioned about the Perception-Blocking Mask, that wasn't my point. People throughout the game refer to Roland as 'The Black Silence' several times. Olivier's reception mentions how he heard rumors about someone who appeared to be the Black Silence was going on a rampage, Meow refers to Roland as such, and so does the Thumb. However, these were all instances where he was wearing the Gloves of the Black Silence, AND the Perception-Blocking mask. In other words, after Angelica had passed and he used the gloves himself, making his only notable trait 'the silence around the gloves', what 'The Black Silence' was known for. And, once again - 'The Black Silence' passive doesn't belong on Roland's Page - but rather, 'The Black Silence's Page', which takes the form of the Gloves of the Black Silence, and now also has Orlando as he is the one wielding it. I've never argued that Roland doesn't deserve the title. People around him recognize him as such (Angela in particular), and he clearly resonates with the title himself, as he distorts as 'The Black Silence'. In addition, he doesn't go out of his way to correct others either. But my point is - that Roland was never OFFICIALLY appointed the Color by the Hana Association. One final time, one of the writers (Kim Jihoon) states: "That's why most people were unable to recognize Roland when he was using his wife's gloves, mistaking him for the Black Silence." He was not the Black Silence. He was *mistaken* as such. Edit: Just read your edit. The HEAD is not who appoints colors - it is the Hana. @@HazIosefka a year late but, I feel like the fact that he became the unofficial Black Silence afterwards is kind of a Legend now, instead of a person. Due to Roland and Angelica both being the black silence, their exploits and Roland's rampage gave birth to the boogeyman known as such. Just as the Red Mist is Kali then turned Gebura, it became not just a title of a really strong Fixer, but also a story many won't forget for a long time.
Great video but about the black silence identity part i have something to say. I know that Angelica was the real black silence but Zena from the last head reception called Roland a "new color" so i have a theory that Roland became a color after killing the Pianist and before he went insane. Pretty sure normal people could mistake Roland as someone else because of his mask but i believe an arbiter would know who was behind all that carnage so he might be a color too. After the first black silence died and Roland killed the thing that killed black silence he got to be the next color assosiated with the color black since Hana asaosiation figured he was stronger than Angelica. Olivier knows about Angelica dying so Hana assosiation most likely knew that Roland was behind that carnage and had the gloves of black silence. BUT HEY that's just a theory a GAME THEORY thanks for reading.
The main problem with this theory is that Roland, in the *artbook* itself, does not hold the Title of The Black Silence at ANY point, the same way Argalia, The Red Mist and The Purple Tear do. What do I mean? Take a look at Kali, for example. Grade - Grade 1 Fixer Color of the Red Mist Roland doesn't have this 'Color' in any variation of his article in the Artbook. Even after he obtains Angelica's gloves, the 'Grade' section still only states that he is a Grade 1 Fixer. Nothing else. The point of contention here is after he turns on the Library, and puts on the Perception-Blocking Mask. After that, most of his traits turn into "...", including his grade. Whereas *after* he undistorts, the grade turns into "???". This is why I said that it shouldn't matter that he isn't the Black Silence. It's reached the point where even his level of power is near impossible to place, simply because of his aptitude and fortitude. He's strong enough to the point where he deserves the title, and is acknowledged as such by multiple characters in the story. And in the end, isn't that what matters?
Out of the 14 prayers, the Sorrow one seems to be the only relevant one that fits the mood and themes. I read them seeing if I could try translating some but nothing really stood out.
I've seen some of the names of the other poems translated into english, and some maybe fit thematically? Stuff like Prière pour qu’un enfant ne meure pas - though once again, that's extremely surface level and only looks at the title of the poem. In addition, as I mentioned - I'm pretty sure PM emphasized so much on the 'Prayer for Loving Sorrow' due to its presence in 'The Investigation', so it's possible that PM didn't look at the other poems that Francis Jammes wrote. :( Though I hope that isn't necessarily the case, and we're just missing out on some themes.
I think the 'grandma' that Roland mentioned is literally Lori, she nurtured and helped him so much, She practically gave him a new life after guiding him to the library, else he'll just be among the nameless fixer that died. I don't think She literally is his grandma since she's probably around her 50's and Roland is like 30's but it would be pretty nice and hilarious.
This is something others have brought up as well, but I...doubt it. Remember, Roland told us that his 'gran' told him to always wear a mask in fixer work, before just...disappearing, one day. He speaks fairly affectionately of her - like someone he's lost rather than someone who left him behind. Compare it to how he talks about or talks to Iori, who he's quite frank and candid about. It's definitely not *completely* ruled out, it's entirely possible in fact - but the circumstantial evidence points elsewhere, in my opinion. Also, Iori's age is just kinda weird overall. "Your son died more than 40 years ago..." - Argalia Her dimension hopping kinda makes it weird, but *if* Iori was Roland's gran, it could make sense.
Great analysis (especially om the 12 fixers and how roland doesn't have the key page) Herez an idea if your making another analysis like these if you are still interesed remember the twitter post where PM reveals virgil and his illustration? Above this post was a conversation between (assumably) Roland and Gebura. In this conversation Roland was asked and tells his own lists of candidates who are and can be the current "Strongest" fixer of the city. Im curious as to your own take on these listed fixers and their lore based off their own novels, epics, tales and written stories
Honestly, I don't think I'll do another one of these unless I need like a 'filler' video? These are fairly 'factual' and hard to surprise people with, unlike with interpretational videos like Netzach's which is what I prefer. I'll keep that one in mind! But I think other UA-camrs like Last Minute Essays would probably cover these in a much more entertaining and informational manner.
Actually looking at the art book it makes it sound like the black silence was always a pair, and considering the black silence's symbol would have normally been 2 hands forming a heart with a pulse and when we face roland one of the hands is open and it's pulse is flatlined, it's likely him and his wife where always the black silence together but because of his perception blocking masking all of their actions together where credited solely to Angelica because no one could tell it was actually 2 people

As much as i would like to translate some of Francis Jammes’s works they are resonably lenghty and the phonetics/rimes are an absolute pain to carry over from frensh, so it would be hard to do his poems justice. What i can do is say that the 14 prayers are centered around the theme of trancience,death and spirituality, laced thoroughly with religious tones. Though as far as this author’s other works are concerned they where fairly popular in great brittain and so translations should not be too hard to find.
Yeah - someone else translated the *names* of each poem, and it definitely does give off the religious/death vibes. Stuff like Prière pour louer Dieu, etc. It does make me wonder if PM somehow got Korean translations of the other poems and tried to work those themes into Roland's arc, though without being able to understand them myself it's not something I can identify. Though...once again - I do think the only reason why they emphasized so much on the Prayer for Loving Sorrow is due to its presence in J. M. Lee's novel. It's entirely possible that those themes, *if* they do show up - is completely coincidental.
@@HazIosefka I personally believe (having read both the original "Prière pour aimer la douleur" and the translation) that the poem was used as a recurring motif in Roland's character arc both due to its presence in J.M Lee's novel but also due to how it specifically correlates thematically with Roland's character as the main theme of "Prière pour aimer la douleur" is to accept and find beauty in one's own pain and suffering, to accept sorrow as an inevitable part of life. We can draw parallels between these themes and Roland's self destructive nihilism.
I like to interpret the black silence being both of them, as they always worked together even before Angelica was given a color, but no one could perceive Roland.
I don't think it's impossible - but I can't seem to *ever* recall a moment where Angelica is said to have used the mask herself. I can definitely see them sharing the gloves though, especially since we know Roland broke Mook Workshop at one point. In my opinion, Roland contributed to the title being given to Angelica, but was never actually recognized himself for his efforts.
@@HazIosefka Something to add on to the theory of them sharing the gloves, though it would need to be properly vetted against evidence, is that Roland was able to survive the Pianist and kill it. Angelica was absorbed into the Pianist's piano, so the gloves couldn't have been on her person, and it sounds to me like it was the music itself that Pianist was playing that would transform people into notes, meaning Roland's home was likely within the danger zone so assuming it was even still standing by the time he arrived, it's unlikely he could have gotten inside, found where ever they hid the gloves, and then put them on. If Roland already had the gloves on him since he was out on a job at the time, it would explain how he "got" them. Angelica was pregnant so she likely wasn't going out on missions, meaning Roland would have been able to hold onto the gloves as he would have been using them the most. Plus, it would also explain how he was able to survive the Pianist's music if the music itself was such a danger. The gloves silenced everything but the sound of the weapons, which would include all of the music, allowing him to get in close and kill the Pianist unaffected by the song.

I think Roland is way stronger than Angelica because not only does he have furioso he also gained a lot of experience fighting in the library so that also counts and he got familiar with the weapons during his syndicate purge so I’d say he knows how to use the gloves equal to Angelica and he’s a lot more experienced now at the end of the game and stronger than ever

Someone else actually already brought this up, but I still find it personally hard to believe. The way he talks about or treats The Purple Tear is very far from how he talks about his grandma. There's much more respect, and the term is one of endearment as compared to how he talks about Iori. The familiarity between him and Iori is less 'familial', and much more 'mentor-pupil'. For example, when Iori first approaches Roland, the line she uses is: "Knock knock~ Are you there, kid with a pitch-black heart? I'm here to make an offer you can't possibly refuse...care to give it a listen?" Not exactly what a family member would use to reunite with another. Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean that Iori *isn't* the gran he's talking about - I just find it hard to believe.
Tbh today i Was playing European war 7 and i had a weapon named "Durandal" that could be used only by a general named "Roland" so i was quite curious about this and i have searched in the internet and It was used by a king named "Orlando" lol everything Is connecting (i have proof too btw)
People knew that Angelica was the Black Silence. Instead, people *didn't* know that Roland was who they were seeing. The only thing they knew about Roland during his rampage was that he wore gloves of The Black Silence, without anything else that was notable. Because of that, they assumed he was The Black Silence, as they were unable to observe his features.
Is there an actual source for that? I seem to recall something like that being said, but I could never find the actual piece of dialogue or PM speak anywhere...

There aren't many sources on PT's and Roland's interactions, and when they do show up (when PT knocks on Roland's door in Tiph's realization, their combat dialogue together, etc.), they all showcase a not so familiar acquaintance. I don't think it's impossible for that to be the case, but I also think it's irresponsible to say that Iori is certainly who Roland's gran is unless we find out more.
yeah, but they probably wanted you to be able to attribute Twelve Fixers on him (so you can make his rolls even higher). From a game balance perspective, it kinda makes sense - sure, they could've made ranga workshop 1-6, 1-6, 1-6 but that undermines Roland's, and inadvertently - The Black Silence's strength.
On the Identity of Black Sience: in the story of the pianist, he was killed by Black Silence, while Angelica's corpse was absorbed into the piano. So, no, Angelica cannot be Black Silence. On the matter of the gloves, they might have belonged to Angelica before the incedent. Roland may have simply taken or "inherited" them, and that's how they have become "gloves of Black Silence". Also, after his rampage, Roland was no longer Black Silence. He got demoted by the Head. That's why he has no mention in the artbook.
Actually, in the combat page, 'Scream', it shows Roland discovering Angelica's body - where her arms are still visible. In addition, Roland does NOT have the Gloves in that image. I can't believe I'm repeating myself *again*, but according to the director - "That's why most people were unable to recognize Roland when he was using his wife's gloves, mistaking him for the Black Silence.". People believed Roland was the Black Silence because of the quiet that surrounded the gloves and the Perception-Blocking Mask, and MISTOOK him for The Black Silence.

This only proves, that at the time, the Identity of Black Silence was not associated with gloves. Also, yes, they were unable to recognise Roland while wearing his wife's gloves. But they would be able to "recognise" Black Silence by... well... silence. Nobody knew that Roland was under the mask. That's why gloves were "gloves of Black Silence" in the Olivier's dialogue. Not "your gloves" or "your wife's gloves", they were gloves of Black Silence (after he supposedly inherited them). And that's why "they mistook him for Black Silence while wearing them". If you just read your quote differently, it can be understood as: "That's why nobody recognised Roland while he was wearing his wife's gloves, because they were mistaking him for Black Silence (because of the mask)."

However, once again, the Director specifically said - Roland was MISTOOK for the Black Silence. But let's assume that this is correct anyways. "He got demoted by the Head. A waltz commonly references a ‘ballroom dance’, performed primarily in ¾, also known as ‘triples’. That’s why the page has three dice. I think. Maybe. Possibly. Perhaps.
The dance is also commonly associated with constant turns, which is somewhat notable on the second and third die of both pages.
2. The backgrounds of The Black Silence’s Reception
The BG used in the reception changes the further you get into the fight, and some of these I noticed don’t get that much interpretation, so I thought I’d provide mine.
The first phase simply uses the background of the floor you used to receive Roland, but every other phase changes it up a little.
The second phase is clearly based on the Smoke War, you can see fumes right at the bottom, and of course there’s the enemies that are clearly designed after what Roland witnessed with Salvador.
The third phase is based on his and Angelica’s confrontation of the Blood-Red Night. The background looks straight up pulled from the Binah Realization CG.
The fourth and final phase is a representation of Roland’s world after he lost Angelica. Barren, empty and monotone. A desolate place, with nothing to live for.

The lance is pretty prominent in mythology surrounding *Astolfo* - a golden, magical lance. And…I’d say that at this point, Astolfo would probably be the only ‘friend’ to Roland, which makes him fit the bill perfectly.
What truly intrigued me was the dagger. A colleague?
Perhaps, someone from Charles’ Office? But who?

These are two lines, nearly back-to-back, that almost outright state that Roland is NOT the Black Silence.
Sure, the second one could point to Roland obtaining the color after leaving Charles' Office, such as after he 'silences the pianist', but there is NO WAY there is any other explanation for the first line if Roland was The Black Silence.
I...do think there are several explanations as to why they wrote it this way, though.
Roland, first of all - perceives himself as The Black Silence. There's a reason why his reception is named as such - and why he distorts in that way, as well.
This is probably the likeliest explanation - after taking up the Gloves for himself, he truly believed he was continuing Angelica's legacy. Garnet went through the same trauma and then picked up this attitude as well, truly seeing himself as the Color.
Or - possibly, Garnet always wielded the gloves, and thus was known as such. In exchange, Lapis was the one who wielded Durandal and the mask, before Garnet picked them up for himself.
Or, maybe - Roland was The Black Silence for silencing the pianist. This is the generally accepted consensus among people who don't like the Angelica theory, but once again - "his wife's gloves, mistaking him for the Black Silence".
Unless there has been some real wacky translation hijinks, it is factual that Roland is not a color. Everything in the *ARTBOOK* points to that being the case. And not just from the Developer Notes, either - Roland's character profile (where it states his grade) never reveals his Color title in all four versions, unlike EVERY OTHER COLOR in the game.
Unless they retcon something, I really doubt that Roland was ever The Black Silence. It's likely that this falls under the first explanation.
Fun fact! If Mook Workshop never existed, Angelica wouldn’t have gone on that date at Dong Hwan’s pub with him.
Fun Fact, early in the game when Roland first mentions that Angelica was a fixer, we see a CG of her wearing the gloves of the Black Silence and using what I’m pretty sure is the Zelkova Workshop weapon. It is a super subtle detail that I didn’t catch until reading the art book.
Yeah! The Urban Plague intro introduces her after slaughtering what seems to be a group of people. It's pretty cool that they already kind of had plans - and it shows when Roland talks about the Pajeon, which is emphasized later in 'Fritter Called Jeon'.

@@HazIosefka Regarding the passive: it's a pretty simple explanation for Roland/Olivier. Neither one uses the Page/Deck they had as Charles' office fixers. Instead they're using decks associated with their new organization/wife. 12 Fixers represents Olivier being an exceptional fixer (because of his previous group) above the average Hana fixer.
Roland lacks that because he's being hard carried by his wife's equipment and trying to mimic her fighting style, so his previous Fixer skill isn't factored in. Even Furioso is Roland trying to do a one man Waltz in Black/Waltz in White. During his boss fight, the passive abilities "A fighter that never retreats" and "Clenched Grudge" represent his actual personal influence on "Angelica's page".
Tl:dr Olivier is Stronger than most Hana Fixers, Roland isn't as strong as his wife, hence why one gets the Passive and the other doesn't.

a little more about Roland. He was so capable of a fixer that Charles let him lead the Charles Office instead of himself. The reason why he isnt a Color is unknown but he is already capable as 1. so at the end of the day it doesnt really matter who's the Black Silence anyway.
Yeah, that's under his developer notes. He was capable and strong enough to hold his own, that's for sure.
Roland is right about him being a kick-ass Fixer. And I think the reason he’s not a Color is because his face is unknown, since being a color is basically advertising their identity.
@@LongNguyen-cz5ty I think one the reason Roland wasn't recognized as a color was because in his exploits with Angelica he would still always wear his mask. Along with the fact the black gloves mask all sound he was basically invisible in all his battles with angelica, kind of giving lots of credit that could've gone to Roland to Angelica instead.

To be fair, this is pretty much stated straight up. Roland's discomfort at having to interact with someone who could very well spill everything about him is spelled out, to the point where he's actively hostile towards her.
Which is - how Roland's arc is resolved. He realizes that the hostility was unfair, that he constantly ran away from things without truly seeing them as they were. These were all themes that I wanted to explore in Roland video that actually talked about his arc rather than just random facts though 💀

Yeah, I think most people that are even *slightly* invested in Roland already know most of these~
That's why I try to dive a little bit deeper, with stuff with Durandal or other stuff about The Twelve Fixers. Honestly, I can't say I've ever felt bored watching one of my videos before I watched this one.
Roland is good with his Durandal and uses it most of the time (in most of the artworks), but other than that he specializes in everything (he has Learn abnormality page, and it is used even when you fight against his memory). The rarity of the card shows how good Roland is with the weapons as well. Green cards are weapons that he does not uses well but he uses the sword in Mook's Workshop skillfully because it's a sword. I do not know what kind of weapon is from Mook Workshop but it's more like a tool to surprise people and lower their defense, which Roland is pretty good at as well. Atelier Logic weapons are just expensive guns, and Wheels' weapons are used to finish off the enemy.
In Angelica's Deck, Atelier Logic is a purple card, and Angelica uses it like a spear that can shoot paralyzing bullets. I think their guns are much more versatile than most people in the city think.
While I can see how you made your conclusions, I personally feel like we're drawing too many conclusions from circumstantial evidence, here.
Using abnormality pages as a gauge of one's abilities is something quite suspect. I understand that Roland is a very 'generalized' character in terms of strength - but using abnormality pages as a reason is a little bit off. The pages are based off the Floor's books. 'The Floor of *General* Works'.
In addition, Roland doesn't only use Learn in his distortion. He cycles between all abnormality pages. It just feels a little bit disingenuous.
I do agree with your sentiment of Roland's common pages being what he doesn't specialize in, though. It's quite clear that there has always been a lot more potential in them with the third phase of the Black Silence's fight. Stuff like Zelkova inflicting bleed and recovering stagger, etc.
I...don't think Atelier Logic is used the way you think it is by Angelica. The art is simply shared with her Allas Workshop - in her combat sprite, she simply uses them like Roland does. But yeah! She gets access to paralysis/bind with Atelier Logic. It's quite clear that most of The Black Silence's weapons never reach their full potential while wielded by Roland. Allas Workshop doesn't give strength and protection, and as mentioned - the paralysis with Atelier Logic, and Zelkova's bleed and stagger restore.
I find your take on specific weapons quite odd, to be honest? Mook Workshop does damage that subverts resistances, but I would say it's quite far from a tool to *surprise*. Wheels also doesn't exactly feel like a finishing weapon to me, due to it's 'Clash Win - Destroy next Die' and following defensive die.
I do understand how you derived certain deductions, but a lot of it is based on assumptions that we can't really be sure about unless ProjectMoon go out of their way to confirm some of these. Thanks for writing this, though - you've given me some perspective on a lot of things, especially on the 'use' of certain weapons. Something to think about~

There is a theory that Roland's 'Grandma' is the Purple Tear, who took care of Roland before suddenly leaving him. 'Disappeared' as he puts it.
I would say it's *not impossible*, though a little unlikely. The way he talks/treats The Purple Tear feels a little...weird, if it was the grandma who he followed the instructions of.

From how I see it, Roland's 'That's That and This is This' mentality made it so that even though Lori used to be his 'grandma', after she left him, she just became an 'acquaintance'. At least, that's how I can explain it.

At Nat. Sciences' cut scene I'm pretty sure it's Iori's voice actor that calls out to Roland in his room.
The idea that it was Angelica who was the black silence and not roland is interesting, and it might have been possible: at least, originally. But at the very least, once Roland killed the Pianist, I'm pretty sure he became the black silence. What you said about the perception blocking mask explaining the loopholes could cover most of them, but there's a pretty big exception. In the final reception, where roland, binah, and gebura use their "true" decks, Roland still uses the same cards even without the mask and still has the passive "the black silence." I don't think you can really explain that one away: the title is his. At that point of the story, the characters that are fighting aren't using the library's power anymore, the cards are there because that's how the game's mechanics work. And while its not outright stated by the head, Baral does refer to him as "even you, of all people," indicating that as a fixer his level was either at or near the top. Which is what's mainly important for deciding a color, being recognized by the head.
I've discussed this a lot with different people, and it always comes back to the same conclusion - that Roland is likely considered The Black Silence now, even if he doesn't hold the title, and that doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things.
Here's the thing - it's almost certain that Angelica was the original Black Silence, or at least - was the person appointed the title of the Black Silence. There's a possibility that both Roland and Angelica held it, but due to Roland's grade not stating as such in the Artbook - and also the 'Silence' being named after a specific mechanic revolving around the gloves, I find it likely that Roland contributed to the title, but never got recognized for it.
With what you mentioned about the Perception-Blocking Mask, that wasn't my point. People throughout the game refer to Roland as 'The Black Silence' several times.
Olivier's reception mentions how he heard rumors about someone who appeared to be the Black Silence was going on a rampage, Meow refers to Roland as such, and so does the Thumb.
However, these were all instances where he was wearing the Gloves of the Black Silence, AND the Perception-Blocking mask. In other words, after Angelica had passed and he used the gloves himself, making his only notable trait 'the silence around the gloves', what 'The Black Silence' was known for.
And, once again - 'The Black Silence' passive doesn't belong on Roland's Page - but rather, 'The Black Silence's Page', which takes the form of the Gloves of the Black Silence, and now also has Orlando as he is the one wielding it.
I've never argued that Roland doesn't deserve the title. People around him recognize him as such (Angela in particular), and he clearly resonates with the title himself, as he distorts as 'The Black Silence'. In addition, he doesn't go out of his way to correct others either. But my point is - that Roland was never OFFICIALLY appointed the Color by the Hana Association.
One final time, one of the writers (Kim Jihoon) states: "That's why most people were unable to recognize Roland when he was using his wife's gloves, mistaking him for the Black Silence."
He was not the Black Silence. He was *mistaken* as such.

Due to Roland and Angelica both being the black silence, their exploits and Roland's rampage gave birth to the boogeyman known as such. Just as the Red Mist is Kali then turned Gebura, it became not just a title of a really strong Fixer, but also a story many won't forget for a long time.

Great video but about the black silence identity part i have something to say. I know that Angelica was the real black silence but Zena from the last head reception called Roland a "new color" so i have a theory that Roland became a color after killing the Pianist and before he went insane. Pretty sure normal people could mistake Roland as someone else because of his mask but i believe an arbiter would know who was behind all that carnage so he might be a color too. After the first black silence died and Roland killed the thing that killed black silence he got to be the next color assosiated with the color black since Hana asaosiation figured he was stronger than Angelica. Olivier knows about Angelica dying so Hana assosiation most likely knew that Roland was behind that carnage and had the gloves of black silence. BUT HEY that's just a theory a GAME THEORY thanks for reading.
The main problem with this theory is that Roland, in the *artbook* itself, does not hold the Title of The Black Silence at ANY point, the same way Argalia, The Red Mist and The Purple Tear do.
What do I mean? Take a look at Kali, for example.

Roland doesn't have this 'Color' in any variation of his article in the Artbook.
Even after he obtains Angelica's gloves, the 'Grade' section still only states that he is a Grade 1 Fixer. Nothing else.
The point of contention here is after he turns on the Library, and puts on the Perception-Blocking Mask.
After that, most of his traits turn into "...", including his grade. Whereas *after* he undistorts, the grade turns into "???".
This is why I said that it shouldn't matter that he isn't the Black Silence. It's reached the point where even his level of power is near impossible to place, simply because of his aptitude and fortitude. He's strong enough to the point where he deserves the title, and is acknowledged as such by multiple characters in the story.
And in the end, isn't that what matters?

Out of the 14 prayers, the Sorrow one seems to be the only relevant one that fits the mood and themes. I read them seeing if I could try translating some but nothing really stood out.
I've seen some of the names of the other poems translated into english, and some maybe fit thematically? Stuff like Prière pour qu’un enfant ne meure pas - though once again, that's extremely surface level and only looks at the title of the poem.
In addition, as I mentioned - I'm pretty sure PM emphasized so much on the 'Prayer for Loving Sorrow' due to its presence in 'The Investigation', so it's possible that PM didn't look at the other poems that Francis Jammes wrote. :(
Though I hope that isn't necessarily the case, and we're just missing out on some themes.
I think the 'grandma' that Roland mentioned is literally Lori, she nurtured and helped him so much, She practically gave him a new life after guiding him to the library, else he'll just be among the nameless fixer that died.
I don't think She literally is his grandma since she's probably around her 50's and Roland is like 30's but it would be pretty nice and hilarious.
This is something others have brought up as well, but I...doubt it. Remember, Roland told us that his 'gran' told him to always wear a mask in fixer work, before just...disappearing, one day.
He speaks fairly affectionately of her - like someone he's lost rather than someone who left him behind. Compare it to how he talks about or talks to Iori, who he's quite frank and candid about.
It's definitely not *completely* ruled out, it's entirely possible in fact - but the circumstantial evidence points elsewhere, in my opinion.
Also, Iori's age is just kinda weird overall.

Honestly, I don't think I'll do another one of these unless I need like a 'filler' video? These are fairly 'factual' and hard to surprise people with, unlike with interpretational videos like Netzach's which is what I prefer.
I'll keep that one in mind! But I think other UA-camrs like Last Minute Essays would probably cover these in a much more entertaining and informational manner.

Actually looking at the art book it makes it sound like the black silence was always a pair, and considering the black silence's symbol would have normally been 2 hands forming a heart with a pulse and when we face roland one of the hands is open and it's pulse is flatlined, it's likely him and his wife where always the black silence together but because of his perception blocking masking all of their actions together where credited solely to Angelica because no one could tell it was actually 2 people

As much as i would like to translate some of Francis Jammes’s works they are resonably lenghty and the phonetics/rimes are an absolute pain to carry over from frensh, so it would be hard to do his poems justice.
What i can do is say that the 14 prayers are centered around the theme of trancience,death and spirituality, laced thoroughly with religious tones. Though as far as this author’s other works are concerned they where fairly popular in great brittain and so translations should not be too hard to find.
Yeah - someone else translated the *names* of each poem, and it definitely does give off the religious/death vibes. Stuff like Prière pour louer Dieu, etc.
It does make me wonder if PM somehow got Korean translations of the other poems and tried to work those themes into Roland's arc, though without being able to understand them myself it's not something I can identify.
Though...once again - I do think the only reason why they emphasized so much on the Prayer for Loving Sorrow is due to its presence in J. M. Lee's novel. It's entirely possible that those themes, *if* they do show up - is completely coincidental.
@@HazIosefka I personally believe (having read both the original "Prière pour aimer la douleur" and the translation) that the poem was used as a recurring motif in Roland's character arc both due to its presence in J.M Lee's novel but also due to how it specifically correlates thematically with Roland's character as the main theme of "Prière pour aimer la douleur" is to accept and find beauty in one's own pain and suffering, to accept sorrow as an inevitable part of life. We can draw parallels between these themes and Roland's self destructive nihilism.
Nono, Roland is the black silence, and it was confirmed in the comics about the limbus company lore (was it leviathan or something like that?)
I like to interpret the black silence being both of them, as they always worked together even before Angelica was given a color, but no one could perceive Roland.

I don't think it's impossible - but I can't seem to *ever* recall a moment where Angelica is said to have used the mask herself.
I can definitely see them sharing the gloves though, especially since we know Roland broke Mook Workshop at one point.
In my opinion, Roland contributed to the title being given to Angelica, but was never actually recognized himself for his efforts.
@@HazIosefka Something to add on to the theory of them sharing the gloves, though it would need to be properly vetted against evidence, is that Roland was able to survive the Pianist and kill it. Angelica was absorbed into the Pianist's piano, so the gloves couldn't have been on her person, and it sounds to me like it was the music itself that Pianist was playing that would transform people into notes, meaning Roland's home was likely within the danger zone so assuming it was even still standing by the time he arrived, it's unlikely he could have gotten inside, found where ever they hid the gloves, and then put them on.
If Roland already had the gloves on him since he was out on a job at the time, it would explain how he "got" them. Angelica was pregnant so she likely wasn't going out on missions, meaning Roland would have been able to hold onto the gloves as he would have been using them the most. Plus, it would also explain how he was able to survive the Pianist's music if the music itself was such a danger. The gloves silenced everything but the sound of the weapons, which would include all of the music, allowing him to get in close and kill the Pianist unaffected by the song.
maybe we could find the connection between our roland and medieval europe in limbus company, seeing as there are a lot of literary characters from that time which are being brought into LOR universe using a (supposed) singularity
I do think there's a lot of stuff. Charlemagne in particular I think had a decent understanding of Greek? don't quote me on that. though the whole singularity thing is pretty much all speculation and theory tbh - i don't think there's a particular basis for it in stuff?
I think Roland is way stronger than Angelica because not only does he have furioso he also gained a lot of experience fighting in the library so that also counts and he got familiar with the weapons during his syndicate purge so I’d say he knows how to use the gloves equal to Angelica and he’s a lot more experienced now at the end of the game and stronger than ever

Someone else actually already brought this up, but I still find it personally hard to believe. The way he talks about or treats The Purple Tear is very far from how he talks about his grandma.
"Damn it...The Purple Tear...Can't believe this is how she handled it..."
For some perspective, here's a line where Roland talks about his granny.
"It's a lesson my gran taught me."
There's much more respect, and the term is one of endearment as compared to how he talks about Iori.
The familiarity between him and Iori is less 'familial', and much more 'mentor-pupil'. For example, when Iori first approaches Roland, the line she uses is:
"Knock knock~ Are you there, kid with a pitch-black heart? I'm here to make an offer you can't possibly refuse...care to give it a listen?"
Not exactly what a family member would use to reunite with another.
Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean that Iori *isn't* the gran he's talking about - I just find it hard to believe.

People knew that Angelica was the Black Silence.
Instead, people *didn't* know that Roland was who they were seeing. The only thing they knew about Roland during his rampage was that he wore gloves of The Black Silence, without anything else that was notable. Because of that, they assumed he was The Black Silence, as they were unable to observe his features.

It's conjecture. There aren't many sources on PT's and Roland's interactions, and when they do show up (when PT knocks on Roland's door in Tiph's realization, their combat dialogue together, etc.), they all showcase a not so familiar acquaintance.
I don't think it's impossible for that to be the case, but I also think it's irresponsible to say that Iori is certainly who Roland's gran is unless we find out more.
12 fixers roland wouldn't be a balance concern since he uses a fixed deck and the numbers could just be adjusted for it
yeah, but they probably wanted you to be able to attribute Twelve Fixers on him (so you can make his rolls even higher). From a game balance perspective, it kinda makes sense - sure, they could've made ranga workshop 1-6, 1-6, 1-6 but that undermines Roland's, and inadvertently - The Black Silence's strength.
On the Identity of Black Sience: in the story of the pianist, he was killed by Black Silence, while Angelica's corpse was absorbed into the piano. So, no, Angelica cannot be Black Silence. On the matter of the gloves, they might have belonged to Angelica before the incedent. Roland may have simply taken or "inherited" them, and that's how they have become "gloves of Black Silence". Also, after his rampage, Roland was no longer Black Silence. He got demoted by the Head. That's why he has no mention in the artbook.
Actually, in the combat page, 'Scream', it shows Roland discovering Angelica's body - where her arms are still visible.
In addition, Roland does NOT have the Gloves in that image.

People believed Roland was the Black Silence because of the quiet that surrounded the gloves and the Perception-Blocking Mask, and MISTOOK him for The Black Silence.

Also, yes, they were unable to recognise Roland while wearing his wife's gloves. But they would be able to "recognise" Black Silence by... well... silence. Nobody knew that Roland was under the mask. That's why gloves were "gloves of Black Silence" in the Olivier's dialogue. Not "your gloves" or "your wife's gloves", they were gloves of Black Silence (after he supposedly inherited them). And that's why "they mistook him for Black Silence while wearing them".
If you just read your quote differently, it can be understood as: "That's why nobody recognised Roland while he was wearing his wife's gloves, because they were mistaking him for Black Silence (because of the mask)."

He had no way to get to her without confronting the Pianist first, if that's true. That would mean that he killed the Pianist without gloves. Just wait one second...

While not the exact one that I used, there's a mod on the workshop called 'Playable Bosses' that has a similar effect.
The one that I used in the video requires BongBongEnterprises, and it's also an original mod by me that I've lost...so you should probably use the one on the Workshop instead.
