That is an eye dazzling collection of hats. I picked up my first Akubra hat today from the post office, a Stylemaster. I will likely get another one in blue. They are very well made hats.
It's really funny to see how well you care for your lovely hats. Where I'm from in WA, if your Akubra is clean and in its original shape, well that's just no good! You have to wear it in, with sweat stains and ensure it's bit out of shape. Many guys change the shape to their own style and lots of people even have holes them and still wear them proudly. It's bit of a badge of authenticity to have a rough looking hat. A few beer and red wine stains never go astray either :) After looking at your well kept hats I think I should buy another for formal occasions!
A lot of useful tips that we know we're going to share with our growing fan base. Not many know that our hats should be stored using the hat stand they come with. The concept of resting a hat on its crown, not its brim is also not known to many! The hats showcased are represent the love of earthy colors and inspirations from the outdoors - these hats won't look out of place on a farm, a ranch or even in the Outback!
I bought a Federation IV a couple of years ago, there wasn’t a stand in the box I know of. Unless you are referring to the cardboard cylinder. I use that as a stand.
I just thought I had a lot of "western" hats. Eight I think. One Miller "Cavalry", Two Stetson's, Two Resistol "Stage Coach", and two I can't remember. Only one is an Akubra. I recently got it and have fallen in love with it. Wears really well and I wear it all the time. Thanks for your clip on the Akubra's you have. I may have to buy one more. Best to you.

However within the last few days I was lucky to spot a brand new and with original tags Akubra Cattleman in a local charity shop. My heart leapt and i immediately went inside, with a dry mouth i lifted it ... It was my size! I could hardly believe my luck! I am now the happy owner of my first genuine Akubra... something i had wished for forever!!! Even better, I know that my donation in the shop is a truly worthy cause ... researching care for video's i found this ; your collection, I must confess I am a little envious!! anyway thanks for sharing your passion, I wanted to share my little passion , ( at last ) fulfilled !! Love hats. Love collecting ‘em and wearing ‘em and treasuring ‘em. Lucky to own a Snowy River Akubra in Khaki Stone, a Barmah in Khaki suede, a Buffalo Stetson in Brown Stone, a White Straw Stetson etc. Next visit to Australia I shall be buying meSelf a Black Akubra.
Great vid, thank you. The only thing is I've been wearing a bush hat since I was nine, which was my dad's first (I'm 53 now) and we ALWAYS put it on by the vee of the front of the hat. This helped "shape" the hat and ensured a tight fit in the bush, but I grew up in the boonies and way before Paul Hogan tried to be a bushman. So the bush hat (aka Akubra) was to keep the sun off your head, not a fashion statement. But like I say LOVED the vid - thank you :)
I've got the Akubra Territory, and it's a fine hat when you're out in the sun! I burn easily, so with its wide brim, it keeps the sun out of my eyes. I can't recommend the hat enough when you're out in the desert. Love your collection!

I have a nice sized collection of Fedoras. Bailey, Stetson, Stefeno, Borsalino, and Stetson. I have an Akubra Stylemaster that I wear on trips through Texas into Ecuador. Aside from the Panama Hats, which are actually woven in Ecuador and shipped worldwide, as they originated there, the other popular hat is a short brimmed fedora (not a trilby). Any fedora with a 2 to 2 1/2" brim, and they instantly think Indiana Jones, regardless of the bash. I visited a small hat shop selling Borsalino there. When I walked in, everyone yelled "Indiana Jones", with the Stylemaster on. It is just uncommon for them to see, so they relate it to the movies they have seen. It's not out of malice, as they think it's cool, and they comment on how nice the hat is. I have an Akubra Boss on order that I'm going to do a brim reshape and change out the band on. The reason for it being a harder hat is that it is a mix of an Australian and American West/Cowboy hat. By in large, most Western/Cowboy hats are made to be hard. They soften over time with use. Ranchers, Rodeo riders, etc., put the hats through abuse, as well as them being occasionally stomped by a bull, horse, cow, etc.. Having a harder hat helps with the longevity. It's not uncommon for the hats to be bought for hundreds of dollars in the Western United States, as they are a necessity and are reblocked and shaped until the hat wears out over many years. Cheaper to buy one for hundreds, than buy new every few months to a year. I wear the Akubra Stylemaster in Ecuador because of it's UV sun protection. While it is cool weather in the Andes, it's closer to the sun's rays, and without a hat, scarf, jacket, and sunscreen, you can burn easily in 60 to 70 degree (Fahrenheit) weather. I'm wanting something different for when I return to Ecuador this year. The Akubra Boss was the choice I made, because of it's high UV resistance rating being the same as the Stylemaster. Plus I'll get compared to something other than Indiana Jones while there. (;

I think you're the first person ever to mention that the Bushtucker Mans hat is a custom bash. Impressive! Apparently used to be common decades ago amongst Queensland stockmen. Or that's what I remember from hearing him say on the radio when I was about 12 lol

Love this hat so I'm gunna buy a black one and put an aztec band on it. Love your video and your accent. The best hats I have are Akubras and I have a large fedora hat collection. The Akubras I have are the Stylemaster, the Bushman, and the Squatter Fedora. I plan to get the same ones in different colors too and I hope to end up getting the Akubra Bogart Hat.

Wow that is a lot of Akubra hats for one girl! I only have one and it is Akubra Sqatter Imperial in a brown color that looks like the second hat you showed here. I was searching how to re-shape the top of my hat. It has never been properly shaped since I got it and I am not sure what I can do with it. I bought it about 30 years ago and never have worn it more than a couple of times, but I really want to wear it. Mine looks almost identical to the Indiana Jones hat you showed, with the identical band, but mine has a ribbon sewn on the hat brim edge.
Well I have now steamed it but I still can't get it to "un-crease" from the position it was in for 30 years. I have gone back the former pork-pie crown shape. I still can't get the wrinkles out though.
Lovely collection - you should look at the 'pastoralist' (now not made) wear them when going to town to see the accountant or bank manager for another $5m overdraft to buy some more cattle and another 1, 000.000 acres.
Walked in to RM Williams today for a look and walked out with a Akubra Longhorn exclusively made for the RM Williams brand it's a awesome looking hat don't know why i didn't get one sooner
i don't have any akubra's yet. i'm looking at them though on-line at "Hats By The Hundred" an on-line store in australia. now i'm wanting.. territory, pilbara & riverina. i already have a few lower-crown smaller-brimmed hats by other makers. i live in texas, but i like the aussie hats. such nice collection you have.
Great collection! I only have two, a brown Federation (I was mad about Indiana Jones), and an old and battered Snowy River. I have a new one coming, the stingy brimmed Hampton, in Cruiser Grey. Can't wait :-)

I say this because the quality of ugg boots has changed and not for the good. The boots that you purchased will last for years to come because they were well made and the material and workmanship in your boots is the best quality. I currently own over twenty pairs of uggs boots and I am glad i invested when i did. The ugg boots that are being manufactured now are nothing like the collection you have, keep them!! First of all, great video and a very nice collection. I just recently ordered my first Akubra and chose the Stylemaster in charcoal. Since then I ordered the Banjo Paterson in fawn. I was doing research on fedoras in general when I discovered the Akubra product line. Their website has some small clip videos of the production process for anyone interested in knowing more about these great hats.
Nice collection! I'm a lover of Akubra hats and didn't know that they had made one called "Spirit of Australia." I got one called Jackaroo, it was made for the Sydney 2000 Olympics as well. By chance, I got it from Elm of Burford before their stock sold out. At first sight, the Spirit of Australia is one of the nicest hats Akubra has ever made. It's a bit reminiscent of the Plainsman.
I hang my hats from the antler tips of Whitetail Deer skulls. The tips are actually fairly blunt, and the pointed tip of the crown hangs beautifully from the antlers, and it never distorts the shape ... they are natural hat racks!
I only have one Akubra, The CATTLEMAN in fawn colour I think. I like the look of the silk lining which mine does not have so I am trying to find out if I can buy and fit one myself. As you say they are brilliant hats in all weathers and are instantly recognisable even to non hat people, probably because of "celebrity". Thanks for the show I am REALLY jealous now. REgards Dave UK
According to David Morgan the ones you're calling a pork pie top are in fact called telescope crowns. Pork pie crowns are flat on top with a sharp circular crease with the outside of the crease being similar to a telescope crown.Very very nice collection you have :)

I just received my Cattleman after waiting 5 months due to having a larger nut. Its a size bigger so getting ready to steam it down. Already placed my next order. Though the 5 month wait is a killer.

Are you sure about the Akubra hats used in all the Indiana Jones movies. I spoke with an Akubra hat dealer in the US who told me that the hats worn by Harrison Ford in the Indiana Jones movies were not made by Akubra; but, that the Adventurer (sold as an open crown) was probably the closest to the movie hat.
Well, nice collection. I had a collection that was about the same size. but I had to move to Virginia in an emergency move. This forced my parents to store my things for me.while I was gone.. the move ended up lasting about 20 years. During that time my father died. This necessitated the transfer of my hats to a non-climate controlled not air tight storage facility. As a result the vast majority of my hats were ruined; I'm trying to restore what I can now. So Tips: Do not store your hats in a non-climate controlled environment for long. Do not cup stack your hats. If you are not wearing a hat always store your hat in a good quality hat box with a fitting to store the hat without pressure to the brim or crown. Get a good quality hat brim brush..as you wear your hat you should brush dirt and particles off the hat in a counter clockwise direction (usually) . If you don't you will end up staining your hat if moisture gets on it. If you want to display your hat get a cheap wooden hat stretcher and mount door stops on the bottom of it so that the hat rests with the brim floating above the deck. If you have a problem like mine, with many hats that have been baked and shrunk, don't be afraid to get help from a professional; they have equipment that can resize the hat for a modest fee. I have managed to save around 5 of my hats so far.. don't do what I did.
Very nice video! I live in The Netherlands and I want to buy an Akubra Stylemaster. Having size 56, should I take a bigger size or stay to my right size. The weather here is of course not the same as in Australia. The only problem is that there are no shops here selling Akubras.
The Boss hat arrived and I removed the band, ironed the brim flat, and put on a new pleated hat band. My fiance called as I was flattening the brim. She wasn't so thrilled with the hat in it's original form, but with the brim flattened she lit up and exclaimed, "I like this!". I wore the hat during a shopping trip with my daughter. The men looked at me in shock, as ball caps are predominant in my area of the world. A group of women stared so hard at me, in passing, that they tripped over each other...which my daughter found amusing (as we continued walking by them). In Texas, nobody pays any attention to people's hats, as they either wear them themselves, or are just used to seeing people wear them. In Ecuador, as stated previously, they notice due to only two styles of hats being the norm. The Akubra Boss hat gives the look of power. With a flattened brim that doesn't change. I am one of the rare people who pull off the wide brimmed hat looks, plus I have the I don't care attitude which helps as well. (:
What is correct and what is done are very different. Most aussie bushmen will use the crown to put them on, fan themselves with the hat etc. My sources? I live here. In fact, I live in the same town as the factory.
yep. The "pinch" in the crown is called that because people pinch them to put them on. watch any movie from the 30's and 40's and you will see literally EVERY person put their hat on that way. Don't get me wrong, like Akubra says, it is BETTER to put them on that way if you care about it staying perfect. But better and real world applications are totally different.
Her reason y not to use the crown is it will get makeup on it and dirty. It's not a fashion hat.... it's a work hat, it needs oil and warmth to soak it in. The colour and marks make the hats style, takes a few yrs to get the style u and only u won't for ur hat.
No worries. Was just saying I'd like to see one. Am checking with David Morgan in America to see what they can configure to a Plainsman shape and use both then chinstrap and the crocodile hatband on it. Am partial to the Fawn colour as the dye had unusual effects: in the shade it is more green, whilst in the sun it is more tan. Starting to like that rounded crown, and my help me break that horrible habit of grabbing the crown to put on & remove the hat. /blames Western movies for that!
Great video. I'm a Yank but lived in Australia a couple years and bought my Akubra in Wagga. Its an 'Oxley'. Do they still make that one or did they change the name? It looks a bit like your 'Territory'. I also have a 'Cattleman', love it too.

Perhaps it's their Regency Fawn. I just looked at a couple sites and they only show the Gymkhana in Regency Fawn and Rodeo Red. BTW they have a pile of Fawns: Acorn Fawn, Taupe Fawn, Heritage Fawn, Tawny Fawn, and Regency Fawn. Maybe there are more, who can say with them. BTW if you came here to California everybody would say "I love your Game Of Thrones accent!"
My boyfriend has one and hes asked me to reshape it for him and give it the radiers turn bash I've got it close but can't get the center crease correct any advice would be helpful
I have three Coober Pedy’s (my favorite), a Territory in Santone Fawn and two Akubra slouch hats. I love the color of your Territory but haven’t seen that color here in the states, I might buy a black Territory next, unless I can find your color. Great video and I love your collection. Wow that is a lot of Akubra hats for one girl! I only have one and it is Akubra Sqatter Imperial in a brown color that looks like the second hat you showed here. I was searching how to re-shape the top of my hat. It has never been properly shaped since I got it and I am not sure what I can do with it. I bought it about 30 years ago and never have worn it more than a couple of times, but I really want to wear it. Mine looks almost identical to the Indiana Jones hat you showed, with the identical band, but mine has a ribbon sewn on the hat brim edge.
just steam it and shape it how you want.
Well I have now steamed it but I still can't get it to "un-crease" from the position it was in for 30 years. I have gone back the former pork-pie crown shape. I still can't get the wrinkles out though.
Lovely collection - you should look at the 'pastoralist' (now not made) wear them when going to town to see the accountant or bank manager for another $5m overdraft to buy some more cattle and another 1, 000.000 acres.

I say this because the quality of ugg boots has changed and not for the good. The boots that you purchased will last for years to come because they were well made and the material and workmanship in your boots is the best quality. I currently own over twenty pairs of uggs boots and I am glad i invested when i did. The ugg boots that are being manufactured now are nothing like the collection you have, keep them!! First of all, great video and a very nice collection. I just recently ordered my first Akubra and chose the Stylemaster in charcoal. Since then I ordered the Banjo Paterson in fawn. I was doing research on fedoras in general when I discovered the Akubra product line. Their website has some small clip videos of the production process for anyone interested in knowing more about these great hats.

Nice collection! I'm a lover of Akubra hats and didn't know that they had made one called "Spirit of Australia." I got one called Jackaroo, it was made for the Sydney 2000 Olympics as well. By chance, I got it from Elm of Burford before their stock sold out. At first sight, the Spirit of Australia is one of the nicest hats Akubra has ever made. It's a bit reminiscent of the Plainsman.
I hang my hats from the antler tips of Whitetail Deer skulls. The tips are actually fairly blunt, and the pointed tip of the crown hangs beautifully from the antlers, and it never distorts the shape ... they are natural hat racks!
Yes we had them over the fireplace and dried clothes on them, very handy mate.
I only have one Akubra, The CATTLEMAN in fawn colour I think. I like the look of the silk lining which mine does not have so I am trying to find out if I can buy and fit one myself. As you say they are brilliant hats in all weathers and are instantly recognisable even to non hat people, probably because of "celebrity". Thanks for the show I am REALLY jealous now. REgards Dave UK
+notwocdivad not having the inner lining means its a work hat, as it lets your head breath more (thats what most of us jackeroos have)

Anatomy of a hat. Hey hat lady. In the US we call the leather thing in a hat that contacts your head, a leather or some say it's a sweatband.
Of I'm not mistaken, the Down Under hat has what is called a "telescopic crown" and the inner leather band is the sweat band.

According to David Morgan the ones you're calling a pork pie top are in fact called telescope crowns. Pork pie crowns are flat on top with a sharp circular crease with the outside of the crease being similar to a telescope crown.Very very nice collection you have :)

Are you sure about the Akubra hats used in all the Indiana Jones movies. I spoke with an Akubra hat dealer in the US who told me that the hats worn by Harrison Ford in the Indiana Jones movies were not made by Akubra; but, that the Adventurer (sold as an open crown) was probably the closest to the movie hat.

Well, nice collection. I had a collection that was about the same size. but I had to move to Virginia in an emergency move. This forced my parents to store my things for me.while I was gone.. the move ended up lasting about 20 years. During that time my father died. This necessitated the transfer of my hats to a non-climate controlled not air tight storage facility. As a result the vast majority of my hats were ruined; I'm trying to restore what I can now. So Tips: Do not store your hats in a non-climate controlled environment for long. Do not cup stack your hats. If you are not wearing a hat always store your hat in a good quality hat box with a fitting to store the hat without pressure to the brim or crown. Get a good quality hat brim brush..as you wear your hat you should brush dirt and particles off the hat in a counter clockwise direction (usually) . If you don't you will end up staining your hat if moisture gets on it. If you want to display your hat get a cheap wooden hat stretcher and mount door stops on the bottom of it so that the hat rests with the brim floating above the deck. If you have a problem like mine, with many hats that have been baked and shrunk, don't be afraid to get help from a professional; they have equipment that can resize the hat for a modest fee. I have managed to save around 5 of my hats so far.. don't do what I did.

Very nice video! I live in The Netherlands and I want to buy an Akubra Stylemaster. Having size 56, should I take a bigger size or stay to my right size. The weather here is of course not the same as in Australia. The only problem is that there are no shops here selling Akubras.

The Boss hat arrived and I removed the band, ironed the brim flat, and put on a new pleated hat band. My fiance called as I was flattening the brim. She wasn't so thrilled with the hat in it's original form, but with the brim flattened she lit up and exclaimed, "I like this!". I wore the hat during a shopping trip with my daughter. The men looked at me in shock, as ball caps are predominant in my area of the world. A group of women stared so hard at me, in passing, that they tripped over each other...which my daughter found amusing (as we continued walking by them). In Texas, nobody pays any attention to people's hats, as they either wear them themselves, or are just used to seeing people wear them. In Ecuador, as stated previously, they notice due to only two styles of hats being the norm. The Akubra Boss hat gives the look of power. With a flattened brim that doesn't change. I am one of the rare people who pull off the wide brimmed hat looks, plus I have the I don't care attitude which helps as well. (:

What is correct and what is done are very different. Most aussie bushmen will use the crown to put them on, fan themselves with the hat etc. My sources? I live here. In fact, I live in the same town as the factory.

yep. The "pinch" in the crown is called that because people pinch them to put them on. watch any movie from the 30's and 40's and you will see literally EVERY person put their hat on that way.
Don't get me wrong, like Akubra says, it is BETTER to put them on that way if you care about it staying perfect. But better and real world applications are totally different.
You're supposed to shape it yourself anyway, no issues in pinching the front if you're happy with the shape change
Her reason y not to use the crown is it will get makeup on it and dirty. It's not a fashion hat.... it's a work hat, it needs oil and warmth to soak it in. The colour and marks make the hats style, takes a few yrs to get the style u and only u won't for ur hat.

Am checking with David Morgan in America to see what they can configure to a Plainsman shape and use both then chinstrap and the crocodile hatband on it.
Am partial to the Fawn colour as the dye had unusual effects: in the shade it is more green, whilst in the sun it is more tan.
Starting to like that rounded crown, and my help me break that horrible habit of grabbing the crown to put on & remove the hat. /blames Western movies for that!

Great video. I'm a Yank but lived in Australia a couple years and bought my Akubra in Wagga. Its an 'Oxley'. Do they still make that one or did they change the name? It looks a bit like your 'Territory'. I also have a 'Cattleman', love it too.

Perhaps it's their Regency Fawn. I just looked at a couple sites and they only show the Gymkhana in Regency Fawn and Rodeo Red. BTW they have a pile of Fawns: Acorn Fawn, Taupe Fawn, Heritage Fawn, Tawny Fawn, and Regency Fawn. Maybe there are more, who can say with them. BTW if you came here to California everybody would say "I love your Game Of Thrones accent!"
