Why Do Printers Still Suck?

- Printers are universally a headache. In fact, according to Consumer Reports, 75% of home printers are thrown away within a few years of purchase. The ink is expensive, the WiFi doesn't work. Why? We spoke to printer whiz Tercius Bufete, who's an associate editor at Consumer Reports. He has some ideas that should relieve our printer woes.

Why Do Printers Still Suck? - Наука та технологія
This video doesn’t talk about the entire truth.
Printer industry is a Mafia! They are designed to fail. Ink cartridges don’t have any expensive technology in them. They are sold at 100 times their manufacturing cost.
Why does your printer give you an error or not recognize a cheaper ink cartridge? It’s not because it’s of a low quality, it’s because the printer company doesn’t want you to use a cheaper alternative. They have a chip that refuses to recognize different brand cartridges. Most times the errors you see from printers are created on purpose. It’s a very high margin industry. Most times even though the cartridge is just half empty, the printer will give you a false low on ink error.
The price of a printer and a cartridge are almost the same in certain brands.
The markup is more like 250x
They literally have page counters on them
@@entechcore I'm glad your experience is better than mine. My HP printer refuses to show on my computer as an option no matter what i do. I even plug it in to the computer physically with a printer cable and nope.

Yea its not like your router has a usb port to connect your printer by just clicking the wps button on it or anything....seriously when they said that i couldnt believe it just has wifi issues with my printer solved it by plugging it to the modem with the usb cable , much better than plugging it to your computer since that makes your printer have wifi even if its old hope this comment helps someone raging over their printer as i was earlier today

Right??????
Why this video on printers sucks..
Only useful info I got from this video is that there are eco tank printers.
Been using one for two-three years and still haven’t finished the ink... or had any issues
Long time before those company release eco tank type, in my country we already modified our ordinary printer with ink tank reservoir... We call it Printer Infus...
Because of that, Epson develop and release eco tank version because their (and other printer company) ink cartridge don't sell well in my country. Even some store hack/crack those ink cartridge so those printer know it as original cartridge... 😅
For black cartridge is easy to modify it into "infus" type...
But for color cartridge, you need to know the color placement first because some cartridge have different placement... Usually its placement is told by third party unofficial ink refiller...
For example, some HP cartridge use format magenta (up), yellow (bottom left), and cyan (bottom right)...
Me too
The only issue with those is if the ink dries out the printer is toast. They also need almost a full tank to provide enough pressure to print.
That wifi connectivity bit was just ridiculous.
I have my printer 5 inches from the router and it needs to be restarted 3 times to connect to the wifi.
@@maksturk763 just connect it woth the cable. Wifi is just shit.

oh lol, really
I hate printers.
Everything with computers I can work with well. But every printer I have ever came across, whether my own or one at an office, has had a MYRIAD of problems.
My phone, my laptop, my desktop, and all attached peripherals maybe have a problem 1-2x a year. But any printer at my workplace is bound to act up ONCE A WEEK.
just use a typewriter, it will never use any electricity!
Full Time IT guy here. Desktop printers are the bane of my existence. How someone can be a desktop printer guru is incomprehensible for me. Tercious bud, you must be great at parties.
The technology in ink cartridges isnt expensive, is like under a $1 to make one cartridge 😂😂 these dudes
More like 25c to manufacture lol
Well, you get people who somehow hate Chinese OEM ink cartridges cuz they are "cheap" (price-wise, not quality wise), so, only buying those overpriced "genuine" ink cartridges can ease their insecurity

It's not a scam I use printers for many purposes and I never failed on me. Your just north Koreans that thinks everything goes digital. Printers are not a scam
TheTexasOOF Gamer In a way they are
Gabriel Ramirez have you ever had the AWESOME problem where the printer says that your ink is empty, while it’s half full? Yeah, good my ass.
This was kinda dissapointing.
it's weird that we're in 2022 and STILL have no competitive Market for printers.
Any company could complain about the expensive Technology behind their product, but as long as there isn't another producer that manufactures the same good for cheaper prices, we won't have the same Luxury as of our smartphone market.
None of the problems mentioned in the video were my problem unfortunately. The problem with my printer is it refuses to be visible to my computer as an option to print to. I've even plugged it into the computer with a cable and still nothing.
My $135 printer is literally touching my router $250 router. Why do I have no signal to it? 😑😑😑😑
Maybe it's due to my cheap $65 ink. Is there a more expensive ink I can buy 😑😑😑😑😑
Solution: stop using printers, and if for some reason you are required to hand a printed copy, then use the unit in your workplace, alternatively just get it done at a print shop or a store with printer access for $1-2 per batch
My first printer was an HP (about 25 years ago). It had huge ink cartridges and the ink was so cheap I would not even hesitate to print large manuals. My current inkjet has half full (when new) puny cartridges. Most of our printing is black only so I bought a black only Brother laser printer. Reasonable price, prints fast, easy to connect to wifi, and can print 1700 pages per cartridge.
I remember the HP 610c cartridges, they were like a block full of ink. Now they sell like what, a bic pen amount of ink. Complete BS.

This is a great topic, but the video is thoroughly incomplete. What about commercial printers that cost thousands of dollars and still suck?
Printers suck because they are made to suck.
No one can give you something for free, except the good air you breathe and the life you have.
I haven't read any responses that said the ink should be free.
If we were charged for the air we breathe and it was produced by one of the printer companies I believe most of us would be DEAD!
Sorry to hear about that@@sunmoon1234. Try to stay safe ♥
Watch them start charging you for air, oh wait
But they aren't free. They're expensive.
Sexy?
Wat
We've sent cars in space and yet our printers suck
One problem is cost. We want printers to be cheap but that gives printer companies a low margin to make money, which often leads to poorer build quality.
Printer : I need magenta.
Me : **throws the darn thing away**
"A few years" doesn't really mean anything
True, all modern devices, and especially connected "smart" ones, are rendered obsolete within 7 years or so. Smartphones, laptops, TVs, printers, routers, SD cards and flash drives, etc all fall into disuse and get replaced within a few years from being new.
Honestly, the entire video doesn't really mean anything.
Steve Jobs should have reinvented printers and call it “iprint”.
It''ll look like a cheese grater
Starts at USD 999
Pay $1 for every 10 pages printed and starts at $1099
And you could only buy paper and ink at the Apple Store, don't forget that "feature" it would have.
He would've done it way better than any of these other companies, apple products are expensive but you can't deny their reliability
Tbh by now I am convinced that all these problems are programmed into the code somewhere. Printers always just randomly stop working for no apparent reason. You literally print one page and it's fine and the next page won't print cause suddenly there are 5 Million issues. My printer once had an empty cartridge so I bought a new original one, printed 20 pages and got told that the cartridge is empty and I should please buy a new one again. Our other printer straight up said that it can't detect a new cartridge. It was an original one as well. You can't tell me this shit isn't all programmed in there on purpose to increase sales.
They didn't talk about how silly it is to have to install drivers (and then reinstall them), how they come with bloatware, the printer interface being clunky and cheap, impossibly slow InkJet printing, sudden and irreversible failure to work....
I hate the lack of driver support, often they don't support a printer longer than 2-3 years and it may not work with a newer OS. I swear they do this on purpose to sell new models.
The first printer I bought was an HP Office Jet and it was great for about ten years. When I went to buy a new one, somebody told me she had had to send hers back and she thought they were crap, now. Then I bought a cheap Epson with a scanner and it was like a sadistic game trying to get it to print. Purposely designed to torment people.
Who prints at home anymore? Every essay I have to write needs to be emailed in
I love how the printer expert keeps talking about printers not being sexy like he's in denial
All I can say is: get a Brother Printer. I’ve had mine since 2014. I have almost only been using third party ink. There was not a single technical problem with it since I bought it. I don’t take good care of it, have large periods of not printing at all between periods of constantly printing and the connectivity is great.
I love brother but with they had eco type tanks
Some printer cartridges can manually be refilled via an ink refill kit (though not officially through the OEM). I have refilled ink cartridges at home and have saved literally hundreds of dollars with this method. It’s a bit of a messy process (as the ink is extremely concentrated and stains nearly anything it gets on) but it is worth it when you are doing printing at home. On my ink cartridges, I have gotten five to six times the use out of them before they needed to be replaced. It might also be a good idea to look up a few videos on how to do it so you can get an idea of how much goes into each reservoir, as overfilling could lead to cross-contamination which will ruin your carts.
Bro.... you explained nothing on WHY?!
I found a multifunction laser printer sitting next to trash on the street.
took it home, gave it a clean, checked the motherboard for obvious defects, none found.
Plugged it in, toner even was full.
Yay free printer :D
One problem I see with printers it that like a lot of tech there is a race to the bottom especially as the printer cost is going down it becomes hard for companies to really care about quality. And generally the higher quality printers tend to be better overall.
*Because they always need **_Magenta_*
I have an epson eco tank. I do print a lot and already went through 1 bottle of each ink. If what they say on their website is true that one bottle equals 20 carriages then that means I saved $5,200 on ink. The printer costed me $500. 100% worth it.
Thanks for sharing Angel, I've had my eye on that printer. Question: How is the quality of the coloured prints? I'm interested in printing flyers. And also howoften do you encounter printer jams or printing issues?
Chris-Anthony the quality is actually really good. It’s not the best sometimes there are like paint lines if that makes sense. But in all honesty flyers will get thrown away so it doesn’t matter. This problem started happen a year and a half after I got it so it’s probably because I don’t use blue that much. I almost never got a paper jam on mine but the way to remove the back is super simple you use two finger to pitch the springs and it just comes off super easy. I’ve only encountered WiFi or connection issues. There is nothing between it and the router but fixes any software issues that I have had was simple because I turn it off then on. Other than that I would give this printer a 4.5 out of 5. My only issue with it is that it does print slightly slower but I would honestly take that over an overly expensive ink from a regular printer. I’m super satisfied with my investment. I do recommend it. Buy the one that cost $400-$500. I’ve been looking at selling this one because it’s 1st gen and I want to the one that’s between 400-500. When setting it up read every single instruction I turned it on before adding the ink so I had to do a reset. So please read all the instructions but after that amazing printer will recommend. I actually do recommend it to everyone i know that’s looking to buy one. Get it at Costco if you can they gave me extra ink in the box and it was $70 cheaper. If you have any questions just ask.
Chris-Anthony epson.com/For-Work/Printers/Inkjet/WorkForce-ET-4750-EcoTank-All-in-One-Supertank-Printer/p/C11CG19201 I would recommend that one
Honest and detailed, great review Angel. You've been super helpful, I've bookmarked the page and I now know the printer decision to make :)
Thanks for the help~
Chris-Anthony lmao thanks. I was typing as fast as I could I was on my break at work. 😂😂 but the problems that it does have are few and so worth the small headaches because it’ll save you a lot of money.
My HP 2130 All in one printer cost $50, while the ink cartridge cost $25 for black and $20 for color. (or i get "$39.99 for both" in a discount if i order from HP stores)
it's a complete scam, single cartridge replacement alone already cost half as the printer itself.
My printer works fine for years now. We bought it in 2008
I have multiple Epson ecotank printers! They're super easy to refill! And I actually calculated a savings after 1.4 years (ecotank printer is more expensive than normak printer. But ink is cheaper)
Some brands recognize third party ink, you mean ALL brands.
As if the ink scam wasn't bad enough now some of them come with demo cartridges it only give you a few prints. This has exceeded and replaced the razor and blades model.
They dilute the message when they bring up other problems the ink scam is by far the number one problem with printers
the takeaway here for me is to print something twice a week to keep the printer from not sucking
In India ink is refilled using a injection so ink is not expensive here!😅
Because they are not good
I do all of your tips. Print regularly, clean, keep it near the PC. It's really a piece of shit. It's basically planned obsolesence. Printer companies know you dont need to upgrade a printer as long as one works---it's not like an iPhone that will have new features every year. It prints, that's it. So how do they keep cashflow going? Make sure that the printer stops working after 2/3 years. That way people keep buying printers
"it really doesn't do anything sexy or fun"
I want my money back!
This video brought to you by the printer manufacturers.
This guy has his own definition of sexy and thinks everyone else believes the same.
My printer is just 1 meter from the router, and 1/2 meter from my laptop. Why wireless printing is like a gamble ?
That wifi problem is very wrong, I have my printer right to my router and at times it just refuses to work. I have to either restart the computer or router, reinstall software, or mess with some software settings. I've given up and just connect the printer to my laptop anytime I want to print.
I'm generally very good with computers but printers/networks are like ancient Egyptian algebra when you've drank an entire bottle of vodka.
I find that my printer performs best when keeping it unplugged & only turning it on when i need it. This really cuts down on printer errors..
3:06 In other words, you saying we are sucks. yeah 😂
"You know it's funny how much people talk about how much they hate their printers because they don't really do anything sexy or fun"
*THAT IS EXACTLY MY POINT. THEY DON'T DO ANYTHING SEXY OR FUN SO WHY ARE THEY SO FRUSTRATING AND SHIT*
Nice video though :)
I don't want or need it to do anything sexy, nor fun, I just want it to PRINT. Not have a frustrating and baffling issue printing a simple document at least once per week.
James Rolfe's rant on printers is so much better
The only way to use a printer correctly is when you hit it with a bat like in the movie Office Space :-)
Connect your printer 🖨 via cable to your pc
Or ethernet
WiFi is bad, slow and its also unhealthy.
Disable all Auto /manual software up dates for the printer from the manufacturer if using 3rd party cartridges that work. The manufacturer changes chip code, if it doesn't match chip info on cartridge chip it's a no go for that cartridge
This hits home.
*HEY!!*
Wasn't that the guy that used android his entire life????
He's an actor didn't you noticed that?
Inkjets also have pads that get full of ink. Most people might not know the pads even exist. Even fewer of them would know how to or want to change it. Then how in the heck do you reset the counter for it? I have heard there is software for resetting those things but it is not something they distribute.
I just want to see a tech giant (maybe like apple or something like that) make their own printer, it could probably end up being much better then what we have today
I am using hp ftom past 2.5years but still now not even a single problem with it and its wifi enable so my work and really easy and convenient
I wonder if there is a green solution/alternative for the choice of ink. It saddens me how much Letter Press technology has improved but not Ink technology -for the consumer at least .
Maybe recycling ink from the pen marks on used paper? It definitely has to be something capable of staining paper. What are your cool suggestions?
Thanks for reading!
I gave up on printers long time ago. I just go to a local shop and pay to print pages.
**my printer is literally 2m away from my wifi router, i give it a dedicated 802.11ac network, i make sure that there is only my phone and the printer on the network, and somehow all my documents get stuck in the AirPrint queue**
My EPSON printer last 4 year and its still going strong but my new BROTHER(brand) printer just 1 year after 3 days out of warranty it just showing low ink and paper jam but i fill the ink to the top and there was no paper jamming the printer
I work as a software dev and even though I don't know the ins and outs of the printer industry, I can already tell that their software / firmware sucks ass. Imagine this: I had to reinstall my printer driver because I connected the printer to lan when it was previously connected to wifi... windows had no problem recognising the printer, but the driver just completely gave up with the least informational error message ever. I can tell that in every printer there's probably a 500k+ lines firmware written in C with myriads of bugs and a track record of about 50 years. One day I'm gonna found a printer company that just creates stuff that works out of the box, can't be that hard.
You talked about the printer not seeing the paper in the tray but you didn't explain why it does that. I can't imagine storing your printer under your desk causes that. It's not like it was dropped. What about the printer not responding or not seeing your computer randomly? The real reason is printer companies do that on purpose so we get a new one. The old 90s printers always worked great so they can make a good printer. They just don't want to. That's my opinion.
They’re still using old printers from 2000s, despite wireless printers are growing rapidly.
Hey guys, just get an HP officejet printer, sign up for hp instant ink, and your ink will last EXTREMELY long!! HP instant ink cartridges are shipped automatically ahead of time so that when you run low you will always have some. Look it up, I haven’t changed my black cartridge in over a year, and my color ones lasted about 7 months of moderate printing.
Why did this feel more like an SNL skit?
2:04 "These giant black monstrosities." 🤔🤔🤔
I got a Lexmark black and white laser printer and it is very good. I don't need color.
Invest in a laser printer. Toner might be more expensive (unless you use third party brands from Amazon) but it never dries up unlike ink. Only buy an inkjet if you print regularly.
Hello Matthew, would you be able to speak on the quality of colored prints from a laser printer? I'm interested in flyer printing.
@@ChrisAnthonyPinnock
Laser printers are known for clean, crisp, high quality text and images. Some lasers are better than others so do your research and read professional reviews. So yes, if your interested in printing flyers they are good for that.
I've now started looking into the world of laser printers and toners, and it may cost a bit more but the output definitely makes up for it. Very interesting reads so far.
Thank you very much Matthew

Np. I used to work at Office Depot for a number of years so i have a lot of experience with printers.
Inkjet are best at making prints. Laser printer sucks
Print a couple pages per week? That’s so stupid...I just want something to be useable once a month or so is that too much to ask? I’m on my fifth printer, I use it once and then a few months later I go to use it again and the pages come out all blurry. So I get a new one and the same thing happens again.
My first printer work till now, im using xerox multifuction compact lazer priner with 3rd party toner.

"Theres a lot of technology that goes into a cartridge"
What a joke. This man clearly has no idea what he's talking about. Ink cartridges have worked the same for over 40 years. The "new technology" is them just slightly modifying the size so you cant use old cartridges. Ink cartridges have a 240x price markup!! Think im joking? Theres a video on youtube where someone who worked at a tech support center for printers published the cost of manufacturing on his video. They cost next to nothing to make its just plastic with some ink inside, the technology has been there for over 40 years...
The main rnd cost goes into the printers themselves and they markup the cartridges to pay off that rnd. Unfortunately the printers still suck even with the billions of dollars going into rnd...
Until consumers pay for the printer at the proper price they should expect to be ripped off for convenience. But if printers were properly priced then most home users wouldn't buy them as they can print at work/library on proper machines. They don't need them.
the wifi bit sounds like me explaining to non technical people that there is nothing I can do and give a stupid reason when in reality I just don't want to mess with it......oh btw I'm an IT technician
Not all printers suck, I got a laser and although that one only does black and white I have never been more pleased with the reliability of it. I had an inkjet but I don't any more, I threw it out. My best tip is if you don't need color get a laser printer, mine has been trouble free for 15 years!!
Thats a myth printers doesn't work
I'm crying because you understand!
I have a Brother DCP-T700W and I haven’t had any problems with it
*Hey that guy in the video, Good acting on your Android to IOS video*
1:10 technology within a cartridge of ink, that's the shit they spout, the inks haven't changed in 25 years, the price has gone up the amount has gone down and the firmware/printer software wastes a lot of the ink for you as a bonus
0:13 I don’t do that.. that’s weird, no-one touches and feels the paper to make sure they aren’t dreaming
Wasnt there e paper? So much for a revolution.
thanks. that helped a lot with my shitey canon TS9550 which prints beatiful stripes, no matter what i do.
Get a small laser printer. They usually last for years, they don‘t dry out or anything like that. They cost a little more but its worth it. (Although yeah, it sucks at photos, but who prints photos anyways?)
'If you're careful and pay attention to detail, you can solve a lot of these problem' - NO. I use the exact ink for my Canon MG6450 every time, it is right next to my router and computer, use normal A4 paper, and it still constantly has problems. In fact, after the last paper jam, it decided to just completely stop working! Oh ok, I guess it just died then.
No mention of laser printing. That is really surprising since they are significantly better than inkjet at the tasks advertised in this video and have come down significantly in price.
Now it’s time that computers have built in printers. Like if you agree.
Printer *needs* magenta in-
I mean *WE* need magenta ink
wifi is a problem because some people store them in certain places? My printer is 10' away in direct line of sight and still doesn't work.
it's a bad idea to use 3rd party cartridges because they void the warranty? What does that matter if I'm just going to chunk it after a couple years of frustration?
Better question:
HOW COME NO ONE CAN MAKE A PRINTER THAT DOESN'T SUCK AND ISN'T A SCAM?
get a printer with ethernet and connect the cable to the router. Or you could even connect the USB cable to the router. That solves the WiFi issue.
Well, I'm a repair guy who likes to fix a variety of different things. Except printers. Printers indeed suck and have personally made a lot of arguments between my wife and I because she can't wrap her head around the fact I'm not able to fix these pieces of sh** when I can fix everything else. We've been through 4 printers in the past few years. We almost always end up running to the store to do any printing at all.
@1:46 If you don't print much, it ain't gonna help that you can buy an expensive printer in order to get cheap ink.
@3:07 Yes, that doesn't make it less true because they usually aren't build to last.
I hate the difference of LAYOUT between on the paper and in the screen
On most black only models, after figuring out how to reset the ink counter, my cousin once got so fed up that he refilled a cartridge with his chinese calligraphy ink... and guess what? It worked!!!!
$3 for a 100ml bottle! LOL.
