According to what I’ve read, this is one of those cases where the band turned in the album and record label said, “We don’t hear a hit. Come back when you have one”. The band angrily threw this together as a joke and it became a worldwide hit. Lead singer Jani Lane supposedly hated the song.

Yep. Jani Lane said that whole album was supposed to be about Uncle Toms Cabin, featuring that song, but the suits wanted a catchier hit, so Cherry Pie happened and it became the whole focus
Saw Warrant open for Poison in Boston, Mass. and then Warrant invited a great deal of the crowd to a club for a 2nd show.
The suits wanted a song like “pour some sugar on me” if I remember so jani gave them this song.
There is a video of the late Jani Lane on YT talking about how the record company demanded a fluff song - he wrote it in about 10 minutes, and hated himself for it. "For the rest of my life I will be known as the Cherry Pie Guy, I could F×××××G kill myself"

How could not do the music video for this one?!!!!!! It's THE classic hair band video from that late 80s era. My old rock band opened for the late Jani Lane and his band (a facsimile of Warrant) at a club/bar in the early 2000s. He was in bad shape physically (before his stint in celebrity rehab), and he was doing who knows how much controlled substances before, during and after the show. However, he put on a great performance and sounded fantastic.

It was a fun song, and you probably ought to check the video out for it. That said, it was the song that ruined the band--record label made them do it--they got lambasted for it and never really recovered. Basically, this album hit right as Nirvana ascension started and so they had to deal with that too. They are actually pretty decent as a whole and have a lot of good tunes to check out.

He was singing about the same girl being the Cherry Pie and didn't want to share is how I understood it growing up. I think he was referring to sex when he said swinging because they done their swinging everywhere from what the song says. lol I know about the key parties. Never been to one & never will! The word "swinging" is used as a replacement word, not as the... ...'classical(?)' definition of the term. Swinging replaces a word used to describe what happens when y'all... ..."mutually appreciate" each other...

Just replace the word swingin' with the 4 letter word beginning with the letter F! lol Altho it sounds like, in the song, she's everybody's girl lol or maybe she's only his but everyone would like to try some of the 'cherry pie' he has bc it's supposed to be of the best recipe ever! 😂 I don't think it's referring to the actual meaning of the word swingin' in this context tho, bc my understanding is there has to be at least 2 couples involved in order to "swing" but I'm not educated or experienced in that particular activity so I could be wrong, imo it's just the word they used to replace the word they were really meaning, which is in reference to sexual activity, assuming btwn two teens or very young adults, since he mentions the girls dad walking in. The video is kind of comical.
Some interesting FYI is During that time Tipper Gore was trying to ban rock music, well, just the release of songs or albums with explicit content in them pertaining to violence, cussing, or sexual innuendos, or references, etc, like with this song lol She argued that listening to those types of songs would poison the minds of kids and influence ppl negatively, & could pretty much cause people to become social deviances and & degenerates in society, in turn causing harm for communities, and she basically believed that it was just immoral smut. BUT Warrant stood up and fought against it, claiming it was unconstitutional to silence artists or deprive them of freedom of speech and expressions through their art in music and song. They argued that it violated their rights and freedoms and that ppl didn't have to listen to their music or anyone else's if they were opposed to the content, and that parents should be the one monitoring their children if they also had issue with any lyrics or content matter .They even left a short and "sweet" 55 second message for Gore as the last "track" of their 1990 'CHERRY PIE' album called "Ode to Tipper Gore". 😆
In the end, the courts obviously ruled against Gore's proposal, but that's when it was declared that all albums with Explicit Material have Parental Advisory labels on them if any songs contained any possible controversial material, that way ppl, especially parents would be warned of the content before buying an album, or then a cassette (but production and sells of CDs were starting to largely grow into popular existence as well), Im assuming that's when age restrictions were also put into effect when purchasing explicit media content as well. BTW, in case anyone is curious, Tipper Gore was married to former Vice President Al Gore until 2010, she is /was a social issues advocate and an activist, so that's how Parental Advisory Stickers on music albums came about, thought I'd share 🎶😊

Warrant was a good rock band, but when the 90's came, their brand of fun-time rock n' roll fell out of flavor... but they did persist til today.
Jani Lane (vocals) said he wrote 'Cherry pie' in 1990 for Warrant's second record because the record company wanted a 'hit single'... He was not happy when the album's title was changed to 'Cherry pie' and when it became a huge hit, Lane was identified by that song mainly... He was very bitter about that. Sadly, Jani Lane quit Warrant & passed away in 2011 from alcohol abuse... Warrant carried on without him and hired singer Robert Mason.
From the crop of 80's bands in L.A, Warrant was a good one when Jani Lane joined them... They were signed and released their first album 'Dirty rotten filthy stinking rich' in 1988 which was a huge hit on MTV and sold 2x platinum in the US w/ hits like 'Down boys'... 'Heaven'... 'Sometimes she cries'... 'Big talk'.
2nd album 'Cherry pie' (1990) was another 2x platinum hit and the music video was definitely a smash... songs like "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and "I saw red" were hits as well.
But after Nirvana's arrival in 1991, 80's rock was no longer in demand by 1992, when Warrant released their 3rd album 'Dog Eat dog'... Their label dropped the band by 1993.
Warrant regrouped in 1995 and tried to adjust w/ the times, but 2 albums - 'Ultraphobic' (1995) and 'Belly to belly' (1996) failed to sell commercially... Jani Lane quit the band in the 2000's. Warrant did 1 album 'Born again' (2006) w/ singer Jaime St. James.
Warrant has since released 2 albums - 'Rockaholic' (2011) and 'Harder, faster' (2017) w/ singer Robert Mason.
