I translated part of this and found it FAR more interesting than I thought it’d be!
I can’t translate all of it because I don’t speak or read Ukrainian and it was extremely tedious to clean up a machine translation from OCR of the transcript. Still, I might as well share what I’ve got and summarize the rest.
My translation starts as Stanislav is describing why the Japanese VA0 has a wire that the others don’t:
“The orange wire is additional ground for the video processor since the ground plane [underneath] results in thin conductive traces that were apparently insufficient for the current. This was already fixed for the rest of the world by connecting the divided ground as a large copper polygon. [*shows images highlighting the JP VA0’s split ground and the merged/continuous ground on other VA0 boards*]”
He then goes on to describe other differences, like how the region/language jumpers are not connected on Japanese consoles:
“Another difference from the rest of the world is that it has dummy jumpers for J1 and J2. It seems a pre-release version connected the VDP’s language select on Pin 107 to this jumper but, yes, it was subsequently revised to ground this pin through the via.”
He then explains that the Model 1 VA7, which was never sold in a 50hz PAL configuration, had the same flawed chipset as the earliest Model 2 consoles (bad sound; no 50hz support). As evidenced by the jumpers on VA7 and vestigial jumpers on JP VA0, the boards were originally intended to support 50hz operation until they discovered the issue with the 315-5487 VDP. That’s when they changed JP VA0 Model 2 board, then still under development, to hard-wire those settings elsewhere on the board and started marking the defective chips with an X:
“This 315-5487 chip is exactly the same VDP that was installed in Mega Drive Model 1 VA7. The architecture the Model 1’s last revision is principally similar to the first version of the Mega Drive Model 2 including, unfortunately, the shortcomings. They have the same flawed sound. The next line on the video processor ends with the letter X which means that the video processor is unable to work in 50hz and although VDP Pin 46 exists it probably isn’t connected to the crystal.”
To demonstrate that the issue is with the chip and not the various boards, he obtains a damaged donor console with the universally-compatible 315-5660 VDP that came later (WITH PAL 50hz support). He intends to show that it is a pin-compatible drop-in replacement for the old 315-5487 VDP and he intends to drop it into the Japanese VA0… the one with dummy jumpers that was hard-wired to Japanese+60hz elsewhere on the board. He repairs the donor board first just to confirm the VDP is working before the transplant.
“This is why they decided to make and install a new [universal] 315-5660 VDP which was used around the world. The defect is not with the Mega Drive and Genesis 2 VA0, VA1, and VA1.8 [boards]. Just for the purpose [of demonstrating] I bought a donor. This Asian VA1 Mega Drive 2 console was very cheap because of the damaged motherboard. Despite this I managed to restore the console to working condition. Fixing first allows us to make sure that the video output is working entirely correct before we start replacing chips.”
With the board tested (works!) he then gives some excellent tips for desoldering large chips on these boards:
“I do not advise using much heat on this motherboard. Heat causes the motherboard to bow and the processor begins to pull itself. Thin copper traces can just break off and extended heat can even damage the crystal oscillator. I add rosin flux and bismuth alloy solder [like Chip Quik SMD Removal Alloy] to help reduce the melting point by about 30% and start heating the VDP until it is free. As soon as the VDP is desoldered I let it cool and then I clean its contacts. Though easy to [melt] the solder [alloy] it is too brittle so it is not suitable for soldering the main donor chip so I clean that too.”
This is where he desolders a 315-5660 VDP from the Asian VA1 (donor) and X-marked 315-5487 VDP from the Japanese VA0 (target). He goes on to do an incredible job soldering the donor 315-5660 into the Japanese VA0 (SERIOUSLY impressive!).
After swapping the chip he tests the Japanese VA0 console with the original Sonic the Hedgehog, which works and demonstrates that the fixed 315-5660 chip is compatible with boards and regions that use 315-5487.
But he’s not done. After testing he returns to the board to sever the ground from the VDP Pin 46 trace. He continues by removing the crystal oscillator and assembling it into the Switchless Mod (region modification board). He uses a drill bit to sever the via stitching pin 107 to the bottom ground plane and shines a light through the board to ensure it is disconnected. He removes the solder mask tenting the same via from the top side to turn it into a solder point for a language select jumper (pull high for English, low for Japanese).
The rest is your typical install of the Switchless Mod where you mount the modboard, take the Reset button out of circuit, and wire to the original oscillator’s footprint. Of course, he then has to connect to the pad he created for VDP Pin 107 since the jumper for that is just a dummy. He connects the modboard’s PAL/NTSC select wire to the traditional jumper then wires the Reset button to the modboard and the modboard back to the main board’s reset circuit.
Finally, he installs the Crystal Clear Audio Mod and runs through a some dramatic comparisons. I’m not even going to try and break that one down since there are so many different audio bypasses these days but it’s another beautiful install!

Блог Альтмера дружище..нравится это не то слово, этот контент то что я бы действительно рекомендовал и делал бы сам....это тот проект который я реализовал в своей голове уже давно, но так и не притворил в жизнь.Я бы с радостью поддержал твой проект и помог бы с реализацией идей, съёмкой, монтажом, звуком и остальным.Жаль что мы в разных городах, да и у меня со временем сейчас всё очень очень плохо и я непредставляю как нарабатывать новый контент для своего канала с такой загрузкой.Новая работа и график убивают меня и моё творчество.

Alex vm плохо и хорошо как по мне, хорошо то что есть, особенные люди которые увлекаются этим, плохо когда ретрогейминг наступают на горло ньюгейминга, бывает что ретрогеймеры не просто там ностальгируют или любят, а просто всем хотят доказать что ретрогейминг лучше, и ваша пс 4 говно, еще что плохо доступность, да доступность, сложно найти в своем городе на пример оригинальную Sega Mega Drive, и придется заказывать на Ebay, что во первых дорого + доставка, и честность продавца, что бы не подкинул паленную консоль

Блог Альтмера У меня Оригинальная MD 2 Pal Asia Va 1. Небольшая коллекция игр к ней. Если ее модифицировать, то игры перестанут работать? Или будут работать не совсем корректно? Т. е. Нужны картриджи для genesis уже? В видео вы так ловко переключаете регионы прямо во время игры, вот и возник вопрос.
В видео показана модификация, которая к приставке добавляется все три существующих региона. Регионы работают не одновременно, а между ними можно переключаться (выбирать). Сами оригинальные картриджи были разными. Некоторые были заблокированы от запуска на не своём регионе, некоторые могли работать и в не родном регионе. Это всё индивидуально с каждой игрой надо разбираться. По опыту скажу, что не заблокированных игр было больше, но хитовые качественные и дорогие игры, нередко имели два или три рома, т.е. с залочкой.
Так что надо ли будет покупать игры американского или японского региона, это надо смотреть.

у меня тоже есть сега с модам сделана на основе оригинальной ASIA PAL правда она немного странновато сделана с двумя переключателями радом с видео выходами первый переключает регионы второй не знаю вам наверное было бы интересно посмотреть да и я бы узнал зачем нужен второй переключатель

Можешь пожалуйста сделать прохождение на сеге соника 1 или 3, а то 2 не особо так нравиться, только не на эмуляторе, просто мне нравится плохое качество и охото посмотреть прохождение на том что и было сделано
