Speech Title:Imagination and Infinite - A Critique of Artificial Imagination
I would like to start by posing two fundamental questions: What is imagination? What does imagination do? It is fundamental because without an elaboration on these questions, we will fail to understand artificial imagination and see it merely as a production of images, and we are fascinated by the complexity of algorithms. It is true that, machines today, especially with machine learning algorithms, are able of producing images that surprise human beings. They are becoming more and more capable in terms of precision and sophistication; consequently, they are thought to be able to replace artistic creations. I would like to show firstly precisely that imagination is not only about the production of image, in the contrary to think about imagination, it is necessary to go beyond images; it is a fallacy to think of artificial imagination as equivalence to human imagination, since it is not only unproductive but also prevent us from uncovering the problems that we may follow Kant by calling it the conflict of faculties.
