Rice lab grows macroscale, modular materials from bacteria

  • Engineered living materials promise to aid efforts in human health, energy and environmental remediation. Now they can be built big and customized with less effort.
    Bioscientists at Rice University have introduced centimeter-scale, slime-like colonies of engineered bacteria that self-assemble from the bottom up. It can be programmed to soak up contaminants from the environment or to catalyze biological reactions, among many possible applications.

    Do you actually use the bacteria bodies or are you harvesting Enzymes to create products? I also study gut bacteria and enzymes assoc to health. It seems that the bacteria factories create the chemistry to carry out the programs from the DNA...most codes are stored in CpG islands and are only "Expressed" if the enzyme is there and that requires the exact bacteria. Our bodies bacteria is under assault. I would like to engage????
    What we need is a database of healthy vs unhealthy and filter the data to see what bacterias are high or low or missing and the relation to health. Fecal Transplants are curing almost every disease.

    Rather than using stool from donors who responded to immunotherapy, the researchers chose instead to use stool from healthy donors.
