    In regards to "knowing your way around a soldering iron" be very careful with tube amps there are some very dangerous voltages and if you touch the wrong thing you could seriously harm yourself (sometimes even after plugging it out). If in doubt do it with someone who's experienced with high voltage circuits :D

      This needs more attention. Tube amps can 100% end you if you touch the wrong thing

      Yes, definitely never try to build a tube amp yourself. Always pay me to do it.😉

    I went through a similar journey.. There are three amps which I had the best success with: Mesa Lonestar Special, Suhr Badger, and a Two Rock Studio Pro. The fewer pedals I've used with these amps, the better. If you want to become a better guitarist, and have better tone.. avoid distractions at all costs. Your right hand touch does more for your sound than any single piece of gear. Invest in your playing!

      literally every guitarist would disagree with u.... ul be back chasing toon with pedals soon or later. bare amps are boring and lack originality and everyone gets tired of their basic tone

    • @SteveHubbardGuitar
      @SteveHubbardGuitar 9 місяців тому +4

      @@end27 Pedals are a tool. Where people go wrong is endlessly searching for the perfect overdrive tone, which simply doesn’t exist. Invest in your playing and you’ll get great tones on whatever gear you use. There is nothing boring or unoriginal about relying primarily on your amp.. That’s a really childish take on the subject.

    • @mikegrisafi541

      @@end27I found everything Steve said to be pretty spot on. Simple, high quality overdriven tube amps tend to keep the tone of your guitar and everything you put into it as a player intact and respond best with as little circuitry as possible between the guitar and the amp input. This means it is up to YOU to keep your tone from being boring. Stating that literally every guitarist would disagree with him suggests to me that you need to broaden your horizen a bit and that you still have a lot of growing to do.

      thats why all bands and best guitarists in the world use pedals, right. u make 0 sense. how can u be this delusional blows my mind. u can literally google, watch videos, watch concerts, see pedalboards yet u try to convince anyone pedals are for beginners or bad players or whatever deragatory passive aggressive insults u try to sneak in here. @@mikegrisafi541

    The interesting thing to me--and this is not an insult...just something I've noticed--is that it seems no matter what amp you use, your tone sounds (to me) essentially the same. It kind of beckons the question as to how much of what is even necessary. You've made videos with several modelers, several app modelers, several amps (solid states, various tubes) from various manufacturers. Every single one sounds nearly identical to me. It's fairly clear to me that certain people dial a very sort of specific tone in with whatever amp they use--some amps that may mean the low, mid, highs are at X, Y, and Z, while other amps they are slightly different to achieve the same sound (as the EQ curves are different for every amp/pedal/modeler). But, at the end of the day...your ears are going to guide the settings to essentially the same or very similar sound despite using a totally different amp.
    Every demo you've showcased has the same sort of Eric Johnson-esque violin tone. It's sort of just led me to think I'll likely never need anything more than a Boss Katana and a solid pedalboard.

      Agree with you too. I honestly have to laugh how everyday John states how amazing any given modeler is and how we need an HX Stomp for all the variety it provides, yet every clean or distortion tone is so similar to the next. Really? Just the other day I watched “his best lead tone ever” and it sounded like all the other 500+ videos. Who falls for this stuff? Just get a simple amp and learn to play, or find your own path and tone. So much modeler nonsense.

    Recently acquired a Benson Monarch, nothing touches it for dynamics, no reverb, a tone and volume knob and a British/USA voicing switch. Incredible amp and there’s no option paralysis.tone for days and all the dynamics come from your hand, clean to overdrive all from your hand and pick attack. Modelers can’t touch that, although I love those too

    • @justmehere6094
      @justmehere6094 9 місяців тому

      I am sure it is a fantastic amp, and probably does rank up there on dynamics. But let's be real. First there are Modellers that can do that. I love the few Tube Amps I still have, tube preamps. But, My Axe FX has all the dynamics and response of those tube amps. Second, if you're getting overdrive from that Monarch, you are either playing it VERY loud, using pedals, which would have to impact the immediacy, and response, as all pedals do, or an attenuator/loadbox, which also has that same tendency.

    The RedPlate Blackline was a huge game changer for me. I still record with a Fractal FM3 but the RedPlate is the best sounding amp I have ever played through. Basically a fender style preamp section with an EL34 power amp. Dual channel. Pricey but worth every penny.

    I bought two amps that brought me back from modelers - a Fender Bassbreaker 007 head and more recently a Milkman The Amp 50. I run both through a WGS ET-65 with easily portable convenience. The cab is about the size of, but much lighter than a Princeton Tonemaster.

    With regards to channel switching amps I always go back to a one-off dig from Mick Taylor on TPS in which he referred to channel switching amps as a "horrific compromise". Which the longer I play amps the more I agree. I mean "keep it simple, stupid" works very well in amp circuits.
    As an aside. Lot's of people have said that John sounds like John no matter what he's plugged into. However, here when he had a bit of amp gain going the tonality of the amp was guiding his playing to different note choices/styles that struck me. So it's clearly a more symbiotic relationship coming from that amp, I feel...but what the fuck do I know?!

    I did the same- bought a Gries 5W tube amp. Same size as this one. Very nice, clean sound and dead simple. It's very quite and reliable. I paid ~$400 very lightly used. Here in the US, $400 for a hand-wired tube amp is pretty good. I use pedal for effects. This amp has nice gain. Mine is all clean.

    I purchased a new Marshall Origin 50C awhile back; I can get the JTM-45, JTM-45/100, and SLP tones I want at a great price. I had a blast and it was sooooo good, I soon had an Origin 50H full stack.
    Then I went full on back into tube amps again; in 2023 I've added an Engl E651 Artist Edition, Marshall JVM410H, 1959HW and a Mesa JP-2C.
    All but one (SY-1000) of my modelers are gone; replaced with tube amps, HX-FX, and my computer plugin rig with PolyChrome DSP, several Neural DSP, Helix Native an Softube Marshall Amp Room.
    For a gigging rig, depending on the music, I'd take my computer rig (for prog, fusion, metal, and everything else...it's very versatile and sounds amazing IMO), my Origin 50C (for classic rock/hard rock) or my ISP Theta Pro DSP MS (for '80s hair metal and thrash).

    I love this build and the price point too! I play a Dr. Z Stang Ray, which is now discontinued, but is basically an AC30 (30 watt EL-84 circuit) with a 12" Celestion Gold. Has only 3 controls: Volume, Tone and Cut. NO reverb - similarly simple to the Dexter. I heard it when Brad Paisley was first out and opening for the artist I toured with. I had him walk me through his rig b/c I liked his tone.

On the flip side to the video, it has three channels but the gain stages are so usable that I could forego overdrive pedals for a footswitch. Pedals work great through it, however.

    After owning (and sending back) the Quad Cortex twice now, I refuse to buy another hardware modeler. If you buy a nice amp and a few pedals, you’ve just bought a setup for life. Sure, you can play around with different pedals from time to time, but the base amp tone won’t change and that’s better than modeling devices that keep being released and updated and becoming antiquated.

    When I was looking for a 15 watt Class A amp, I demoed the Lightning and found it to be too bright or brittle sounding, as compared to say, the Bad Cat Cub. In my opinion your amp sounds better to me than the Lightning (no offense to Lightning owners). Perhaps 6V6 vs EL84's? Also do not need reverb in an amp. I find pedal reverb to be preferrable. Anyway, sounds great!

    Surprised it’s taken this long for you to understand how wonderful simple amps are. To those that have played Mesa Boogies and think that’s amazing tone, try a simple one channel amp. The less crap (caps and resistors and effect loops) your signal goes through the purer the tone and more touch sensitive the amp can be if it’s a great design. The less switches and mid , bass boost, graphic EQ, etc. the bigger difference you will hear and experience between different guitars. (And way less weight to haul). A modeler and a EVH 5150 will sound and feel similar, but a modeler and a great Tweed Deluxe is a very different experience. And no, effects loops aren’t needed with a lower gain amp.
    One of the best sounding and feeling amps I ever played was a copy of the ‘52 Octal Bassman. As simple and lest amount of parts as you can have in a signal. Welcome to what tube amps can be. Analog forever.

    I'm not a fan of channel switching amps at all. I'd suggest you give a Deluxe Reverb a try and if you have the chance a Tweed Deluxe. Also if you've never had the chance to play a JCM 800 2204 through a Marshall cab you really should do that.
