It's kinda limited in terms of design because the CPU can get up there in temperature, which in turn can cause damage to the battery. If Microsoft did want to lob a bigger battery in this, they might have to completely redesign the entire thermal architecture of this machine. This is the case with the Surface Book line too.
I wouldn't recommend any Surface product without dedicated cooling for any extended workloads for this reason.

@@IsiahHD If they would stop using glue to stick the battery to the chassis.. it wouldn't matter about heat.. the CPU is far enough from the battery + it's being passively cooled. Gluing in batteries is phones/these devices was always a bad idea.
Edit: Pull Tabs are the cheapest and easiest way to keep the battery in position.. but remove in case of the need to change..
Ironic seeing Apple doing this for all their products(Not sure about the Macbooks) but no one is learning the good Apple actually does.

The plastic antennae frame is very delicate, and when only replacing the screen is required, cleaning the foam tape adhesive off the antennae's very thin black film cover which has the antennae lead traces attached to it can be challenging, you must be super gentle when cleaning over top of antennae, or it will tear.

Replaced cracked screen and now it won't power on with battery alone, has to be plugged in. I was super careful, what did I do wrong, it doesn't seem to be a charge issue as it had 42% left, now it won't charge past that or power on with battery. Help????

Update 12/29/22 Ordered new battery powers on fine now.
This unit was used outside in a drive thru restaurant setting for taking orders in the hot sun. It was in a protective case, and had screen protector, but still had a cracked screen and was replaced mainly because the battery wouldn't hold much of a charge.
Didn't notice any issues though prior to attempt of replacing screen, best guess why it didn't power on after screen replacement and now does with new battery, was old battery was likely damaged due to overcharging and being overheated, and I unfortunately saw the last power on life cycle it had left.
Replaced battery and unit charges fine now, has been working perfect for the past 2 weeks.

so..... The Million dollar question then is this..
    (Good video by the way)
    HOW DO WE FIX THIS.....
if your SURFACE GO is stuck in redundant loop
    - you turn it on via the Power Button
    - it powers up
    - You see the Logo
    - it says "PREPARING"
    - a Blue screen Flashes
    - the process repeats itself infinitely
    TROUBLESHOOTING...
    - Pressing the UP Volume button does get you into the BIOS Menu without any drama's and everything works fine at this stage
    - It DOESN'T Automatically enter recovery options after 2 Reboots
    - it doesn't enter recovery Mode if you press the DOWN Volume Button (meaning.. the sequence of Power then volume down)
    - it won't boot from a bootable USB
    - You can't recovery it using Android SDK (Software Developers kit)
    - The bottom line is .......
IT JUST NEEDS TO BE RE FLASHED OR...... HAVE THE O/S RELOADED
I strongly doubt that the unit has Hardware problems
    THE ISSUE IS
    the unit did an update
I suppose it tried to go into recovery after that
the blue screen is the Unit trying to re install the recovery image BUT CLEARLY THE IMAGE IS CORRUPTED and can't install and crashes and then reboots to re-attempt to no avail infinitely
Now.. one would think YOU WOULD TEAR IT DOWN
    TAKE OUT THE STORAGE VOLUME
WIPE IT , OR BUY A NEW ONE AND FORMAT IT AND START FROM SCRATCH
however , as far as i can tell the storage is soldered directly to the PCB
i mean... i can of course crack out my de-soldering and reflow station
but.... LMFAO........ SHOULD I REALLY HAVE TO ?
    LMFAO
i can't see normal end users needing to desolder an I.C. because Microsoft decided to solder it to the board.
there MUST BE a simpler solution
something that forces the boot from USB so that it wipes the existing image and installs and deploys a new good working one
    Any ideas ?

What type of adhesive do I use when I reassemble this and where can I get it also where can I get the plastic tools I will check your website. I have never disassembled a tablet but I just bought 10 surplus Surface Go 2 tablets model 1927. These were used in a ClearMe Corporation kiosk nine out of the 10 units had a UEFI BIOS password lock. And I was told that the only way I can clear it is to remove the BIOS chip soldered to the motherboard and replace it. I'm not sure if I'm going to do that or not since I've never tried it but the BIOS chip is sold on eBay for about $24. I did list one of the Surface Go 2 for $125, if I end up selling them at that price I may not worry about the BIOS replacement. Since these are selling in good working condition for about $250 to $300. It may not be worth the time and effort it takes to replace the BIOS.

I have to wonder: how repairable can you make a device, while still keeping it water and dust resistant? Is there a way to make it where you could allow the consumer to reapply the water protective seal so, after you repair it, you can keep the original integrity of the phone's water rating?

    • @firstNamelastName-ho6lv
      @firstNamelastName-ho6lv 2 роки тому

Of course you can. Repair-ability isn't hindered by water / dust ratings, but by corporate greed. Just look at Apple's business model: when a device gets old, instead of offering high-quality battery replacements and services, they slow down your device and (practically) force you to get a new one.

Since display and battery replacements are the most common repair, iPhones lead! Screen repair is very easy on iPhones, and battery repairs just as easy. (We talk abt physical repair not the lockdown systems build into iOS as these are just retarded) So for me the surface is less repairable, because the battery is permanently glued in! Also on iPhones replacing speakers, dock connector etc is pretty easy too. As I said the only thing holding back repairability on iOS is the lockdown system

If Microsoft can pull off a super repairable surface device that you don't need a freaking IR station to upgrade RAM, Cpu and storage, I wouldnt bother if Bill wants to chip us, hell, I would use my 5g mark of the beast chip to unlock my 3rd world $399 super repairable microsoft surface lmao

The thing that kills me about most modern thin and light is soldered storage, I mean what about if your PC dies for a or b reason? All your files die too? With my other devices it's just a matter of taking out the hdd or ssd, until now only have one thin and light: the Samsung Chromebook pro and it's been a nightmare the wifi stopped working correctly and of course it's soldered so there you had it a mostly unusable 500 bucks device, really hate the all soldered devices

Get a hot air station and git gud at using it if that is bothersome to u, It's a really useful skill even if you don't have a repair business and it gives u a ton of skill and cred if you are in an engineering field

Realistically speaking, the best measure to guard against data loss isn't removable storage, its BACKING UP YOUR DATA. I've been there lost some pretty important files 10 years ago, because of some terrible firmware on those early SSD controllers killed the raid and I lost all my data.
I consider data recovery of failed hardware as more of a convenience more than a necessity, because it only guards against hardware failure that's not the storage medium itself. If you want a true guarantee do what you are supposed to and back up data.

With the 2030 SDG goals coming, I think we are 3-4 product generations removed from returning to fully modular devices. By 2024, a device like this will be scoring a 6-7/10 for repairability as 80%+ modular devices become the norm (again). Hopefully, if any good comes from the coronavirus, it will be the acceleration of this timeline due to the reevaluation of logistics chains and resource utilization.

so you cant upgrade the way to low 64gb harddrive? that makes the thing almost unusable if you think about that windows itselve blocks more than half of it. that means about 30 gb for everyting else. what you gonna do with that? save 10 mp3s and 50 pictures? we are not in the 90s anymore.

Isn't it time to start calling 'processor' system on chip SoC.

    • @Laykun9000
      @Laykun9000 4 роки тому +3

No, because it isn't an SoC. Lots of things like the WiFi radio and Sound chip still exist as separate chips on the board. So thusly, this is only a processor (CPU+GPU+Memory controller+PCI-E). An SoC has basically everything integrated apart from storage and ram.
