(1) The Great High Lord of Taoism (太上道君) is a title given to the High Pure One (上清), one of the Three Pure Ones of Taoism. The subsequent quote comes from Tao Te Ching, written by Laozi. The true identity of Laozi as a person has always been debated.
Note that Taoism as a philosophy, as described in the Tao Te Ching, originated much earlier than Taoism as a religion. In the religion, Laozi as the founder is usually associated with the Great Pure One (太清) and not the High Pure One. I’m not sure if this is a mistake in the show or just a different sect of belief.
(2) This is a reference to the fact that, in the historical record, Yan Shifan was always blind in one eye. This is not depicted in the show.
(3) The Yongle Compendium or Yongle Encyclopedia (永乐大典) is a grand compilation of Chinese literature created in the reign of Emperor Yongle. While certainly impressive in its scope, this encyclopedia was really a trophy project for the emperor, and was not widely disseminated in the same way as, for example, the Encyclopædia Britannica. Consequently few copies were made and most of its contents have been lost, with the few remaining volumes scattered around the world.
A mistake is made by the show here, where it refers to Yongle as Taizong (太宗, or venerable ancestor). In fact, at this time Jiajing should have already changed his title to Chengzu (成祖, or founding father). This whole business is explained in my Deciphering Ming Dynasty 1566, Part 3.
(4) It should be noted that the family name of Yan Song and Yan Shifan (严) is different from that of Yan Maoqing (鄢), their crony. In this case, the banner is that of Yan Maoqing, the special tax envoy.
(5) The West Lake (西湖) is a popular scenic feature of Hangzhou, both today and back then.
