This is such a great, classic song. If you want to hear one possible version of a life story in one song and a range of musical genres in one piece, you simply have to listen to this one.
I recently introduced my 11 and 13 year old daughters to “we didn’t start the fire”, and much to my delight, I came home from work a few weeks later and they were both singing it, or at least trying to, with Billy blaring loudly throughout the house. Great musicians transcend through generations, and their songs live on forever!
"The Stranger" album was an ode to the parts of ourselves that we don't realize are there. Sometimes we are a stranger to ourselves. The mask on the bed next to him represents this. Best live concert I ever saw !!!
Billy Joel, on god, is one of the greatest american writers composers performers of rock and roll music. The end. Every fuckin song is a gem. Hundreds of songs-all awesome
I love Billy Joel. He’s a great storyteller and pianist. He’s had so many hits,I don’t even know what to suggest next but I hope you’ll do some more from him.
"Just the Way You Are" is one of soooo many excellent Billy Joel songs. This album was his real breakout record. Other great tunes from the album are "Only the Good Die Young," "Anthony's Song (Movin' Out)," Scenes from An Italian Restaurant" and "The Stranger." Actually, the entire album is fire! 🔥 I saw Billy Joel live on Halloween, 1978 and the show was incredible! I also saw him NYE 2015! Awesome performer!! 💜💜
my dad got this for me too. he's not one to say i love you but last year when I felt down about family drama, he said "well, I cant speak for them, but as for me, I want you to listen to Just The Way You Are"
If you’re ever having a bad day, just have a dose of these Twins. What a tonic for the soul they are. Thanks guys. 😂 Oh Tim, your comment about talking to the 😷 mask on the album. I’m yr fan in MN.
Billy Joel has a deep rabbit hole, but for your next Joel reaction, I suggest either "Piano Man", "New York State of Mind" or "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant". Or you could listen to the title song to The Stranger, which might give you some idea about what the picture on the album cover means.
"We Didn't Start The Fire", "Uptown Girl"(which featured his then wife Christie Brinkley in the video), "Piano Man", and "It's Still Rock 'N Roll To Me" are other great songs!
Yeah, these are better songs, than this song. As a child I found the song pleasant sounding, but the lyrics mildly disturbing as an 8 year old, who never saw that picture which vindicated my young girl instinct to stay far away from a guy saying he doesn't want clever conversation. I was that already, at 8yo, telling you not to change your hair or wear makeup. I’ve never been big on make up still hate it, but if I want to put on some lipstick, I will, when I want to. I changed my hair all the time then, trying to learn what looks good on me, and how to style my hair. It was clear to me he wanted a puppet or mannequin. What woman stays the same forever, none. As humans we adapt to our environment or we die. People who don't change do not exist. Even in death there is change, until embalming and year's later. Thankfully, I never saw that creepy picture, it would have vindicated, my feeling that this song wasn't about a woman at all but a doll, or a corpse. This sick mindset is still pervasive even more so today. The boys or seemingly picked it up only half way. Yet adults want to pretend this is cool. Billy Joel is showing you exactly what what he was singing about, but everyone wants to feign ignorance. Well I know many aren't acting. People don't pay attention, or just won't be honest, and speak up. That's an unfortunate norm.
FINALLY got around to Billy Joel! Man, he has SO many! Please give "Goodnight Saigon" a listen. It was his tribute to the men who fought in Vietnam. You may not understand all the references because of your young age but you'll get the impact nonetheless. Also "We Didn't Start the Fire" - a snapshot of world history
To me this is one of the greatest love songs ever written. I don’t care if you are a man or a woman. You want to hear, I love you just the way you are. A lot of relationships don’t work out because one or both of the people are trying to change the other. If you can’t be happy with your partner as they are, then that person isn’t for you.
I've got to second a couple of others' suggestions for more Billy Joel: Piano Man, Always A Woman, New York State of Mind, and Only the Good Die Young.
I just turned 50. I have listened to Billy since I was 8 or so. I just got to see him in concert a year ago. Bucket list item checked off. Vienna is my favorite.
I was sitting here thinking what was the name of that city we drove by last summer?! Allentown! Every time we saw the sign on the freeway I'd start singing that. 🤣
OMG! This song gets to me EVERY time I hear it. This was my song to me from my high school sweetheart. Unfortunately, we aren't together but this song evokes so many memories. Thank you.

Back in college early 90s there was a Korean guy who had a girlfriend who was very plain, quiet, shy. They had karaoke one night and he sung this to her. Sweetest moment ever.

This song came out after I had my first baby. I always say this is the song to my oldest son. He loved Billy Joel at 2 years old and would sing a song he sang before this one called "Honesty" and it was so cute. He's 43 now, but I still remember my baby when I hear this song. He was born with white blond hair so when it comes to the line "don't change the color of your hair" it means a lot to me. :) Great reaction. Great song. :)
Glad you FINALLY found the man! He has great mellow stuff, but try some of his more intense songs, like PRESSURE. You’ll love the sound! He is an amazing songwriter
I saw Billy and Elton play together several years ago. Hands down one of the best shows. You realize how talented these musicians are when you see them perform live. It’s sad to think so many greats have passed and are getting old and retire.
Yeah I agree not for me either. I actually turn Uptown Girl off when I hear it. Though I am glad you like it, I never judge anyone for music they like or dislike. 👍🏼

Billy Joel's Until the Night is one of my favorites. I was outside the country many years ago and was home sick one night. When this song came on the radio it was comforting and very welcome.
"Piano Man" is a must. But there are SO MANY Billy Joel hits. "New York State of Mind" is a real treat.
Yep. So, so many amazing songs. My Billy Joel playlist is pretty long.

I love all things Billy Joel. There are no bad choices to react to
