    I've always loved the look of metallic or pearlescent paint on a dark surface, and I've always loved my FineTec paints (which I've amassed quite a collection of over the years). So when I saw some new metallic paints from Brea Reese, I thought it would be interesting to get a few different sets of metallic watercolors and swatch and compare them. Here we go! :)

    I've heard that only the FineTec is light fast (Kimberly Crick) so if that's a consideration, the FineTec is better. I have the Hobby Lobby semi-moist, which are identical to the Prima and seem to behave the same way. I love them and probably won't try anything else until they run out. I don't care about the light fastness. Good, helpful review.

    I bought the Prima set and thought I might as well mention that I find it's easier to activate them if you put a few drops in and let it sit for a minute before swirling your brush.

    In my country I can buy individual Finetec/Coliro colours. Those on a budget can just buy colours they will use most often like gold, rose gold, and silver.

    Hi Kristina. I really enjoyed watching you swatch and use your calligraphy pen with these pallets. I’m on a budget so I will probably go with the prima like you suggested. I love all of these colors on the black cardstock. Thank you so much for taking the time to give us an in depth look at these and comparing each. I so appreciate it. ~😺Katz

    These looked so pretty when dry. The Gansai Tambi rainbow pearl set faded a lot when dry, I was not expecting that.
    Would you be able to do a video on the Prima Watercolor Confections sets? :D

    • @maddiek963

      The thing with the Gansai Tambi pearl set is that the mica is abusively silver. The pigment isn’t really fading per se, all that mica just gets pulled to the top when it dries. I do agree it is the most skippable palette. If you’re interested in a Gansai set without the silver mica the Gems set behaves much better.

  • @vamps_rock
    @vamps_rock 5 років тому

    Hi Kristina. As always, your calligraphy skills leave me green with envy. Like you said, the Gansai Tambi Pearl Colors are only meant to be pastels (not to my liking) which are better on white or light paper (it would be great to see all these sets on white paper too if possible). They now have a Gem Color set which 'does what it says on the tin' and is much more my preference! I have to say though, that the color changing green on the last Finetec set is really gorgeous, the red is one of the best I've ever seen and the black is really nice too. I would almost be willing to shed out for that palette for those three shades alone. But at the same time, 3 of the golds look virtually the same!
    I have a question about all of these and other watercolor sets though, and that is that the reds are never really red enough which is so frustrating as reds can be my favorites in the right shades. It's hard to find a bright or deep shade that doesn't end up looking pink or orange. Does anyone know why this is?

    • @kwernerdesign
      @kwernerdesign  5 років тому

      True deep reds with any water medium is hard because essentially "pink" is a diluted red, but you have to have a bit of water to make the paint move, thereby making the red less intense. To get a deep red, I usually do layers of color until it's the intensity that I want.

    • @vamps_rock
      @vamps_rock 5 років тому

      @@kwernerdesign Thanks. I find it so frustrating because I really dislike most pink shades and love the reds that are hardest to find like the deep shades of blood and wine.

  • @nalcarya
    @nalcarya 5 років тому +1

    Just one thing: the Finetec set you use in this video is not the original Finetec colors. They are from a brand who bought license rights to the name Finetec, but the actual original (which now switched over to calling themselves Coliro probably because of this confusion, their website even has a segment about it) are only available in the round, white pans. Which isn't that much of a problem and I guess since the original is now called Coliro it's accurate that these are Finetec colors but still thought it's worth clarifying. :)

    • @kwernerdesign
      @kwernerdesign  5 років тому

      Actually, it's the same stuff. :) The entire saga can be found on the About page at finetecus.com, which says, "In 2014 Draw.TEC purchased the FINETEC family of products together with the brand. At that time most product manufacturing was moved to Draw.TEC, but the mica paints were still being manufactured by the former owner of the brand. Draw.TEC and their distribution partner Alvin & Co. put a lot of time and investment into growing the FINETEC brand. Unfortunately, this manufacturer had serious delivery problems. In order to meet growing demand for pearlescent colors and to avoid supply problems again, Draw.TEC developed an innovative manufacturing process that had a positive effect on the quality. Improvements to the products solubility and applicability have also been implemented. Draw.TEC is the complete owner of the FINETEC brand name and the registered trademark holder in the United States. Alvin & Company is sole distributor of the product line in the USA. -Alvin & Company"

    • @nalcarya
      @nalcarya 5 років тому

      @@kwernerdesign The manufacturer as they call it is the original I mentioned. The colors were and are handmade hence the supply problem. We obviously don't know the details, but I guess they got screwed over by some licensing shenanigans as they are still posing themselves as the original finetec on their website. Both manufacturers are german, so I've been looking at those sites :)
      I'll actually try contacting them to see if they'll share what exactly happened, I'm really curious.

      I believe a gal in our club, Judy Ross, in case you’ve heard of her, said you might need to add a drop or 2 of Gum Arabic to the twinkling H2O’s to get the correct consistency. You would need to put some color into a little container and then add the GA & mix it up. You know when it is enough when the ink well on your nib stays filled. I believe it is a thickening agent for color mediums.

    Arianne Bautista: I'm gonna catch you! Pauline stoles it, Lesven!

    I've never seen the rectangular finetec refills or palettes here in Germany or on Jackson's UK. Were they made for the north American market?

      Yes, I believe they are only sold in the US.

    Do you find the white gel pens dry out quickly? I have 2 but none of them works, and that's only been a year since I got them...?

      I haven’t had any issues with the white Gelly Roll pen. Sometimes my Uni-Ball Signo Broad Pens will dry out, though.

    Hi thanks for the video. QUESTION: The prima pallette you used has a pink but the links you provided doesn't. Any idea where to get the version with the pink?

    • @kwernerdesign
      @kwernerdesign  5 років тому

      I'm fairly certain it's the same palette. The one I used in the video was bought from Simon Says Stamp last week, so if there's a doubt about receiving the same palette, I'd buy from Simon says that's where I got mine.

      @@kwernerdesign thank you. I was just concerned as the photo has 2 blues instead of the pink. I appreciate your time in responding.

    Is there a big difference between metallic and pearl watercolors? I'm new to watercolor and trying to understand the difference and decide which to buy. Thanks! :)

      That's a good question. My gut reaction is to say that the metallic sheen on some of them would suggest they are "metallics," but those same characteristics are shown in the FineTec paints and they call them pearlescent. I have no idea! I suppose I'll just call them shiny and pretty. lol! :)

    What would you recommend for a beginner calligraphy pen?

    • @kwernerdesign
      @kwernerdesign  5 років тому

      I'd recommend starting with a marker. This set by Tombow is a good one. It has a hard tip and soft tip (you can try both and see which is easier to use for you): amzn.to/2WdksDr
