I've tried using Procreate in depth on and off in the 2 years since I got my iPad and I just don't mesh with it like I mesh with ArtStudio. What I love about ASP is that everything is right where I expect it to be and navigating and using it feels natural, even if it is slower than working on desktop with photoshop. I love how seamless it is. In procreate, things are always just slightly off. Brushes, pressure sensitivity, menus and tools. Stuff hidden behind weird gestures that I always have to google. I'm happy with ASP and looking forward to continue using it with this new update!
I think time lapse recording in Procreate should always be turned off if you don't have plans to show your progress to anyone. I noticed a slight reduce to battery drain.
Review!: As someone who has used procreate for OVER 3 years I just bought art studio pro recently to try it out! Tbh it took me a while to finally make the purchase. I was such a procreate fanboy for a long time as I used it for everything forever. But finally I made the purchase and I’m not disappointed! I even moved one of my projects from procreate over to art studio pro partially to test ASP more and cause I am enjoying it! I reallllyyyy like the brushes so far on there as I have been doing a lot of painting work lately it’s amazing! But disclaimer I have only used the app for a couple days so haven’t completely checked it out yet. Lmk if you like a more detailed review later. :) have a nice day
@@fetaup9293 absolutely! I currently switch between the two for different purposes, I am a bit attached to certain brushes. Definitely look into asp more. I recommend it. The only cons I have after using it for this long is how it takes up more storage space then procreate (I have more art in procreate as well) and it has a different interface, like a pc art program, so will take some messing around to figure it all out. The storage problem can be fixed by backing up your art occasionally or it shouldn’t be a bother if you have a iPad with more storage. Loving the brushes and the way they work, it’s great. With my latest project I sketched it in procreate and imported to art studio pro to paint it. let me know If you have any specific questions. I’d be happy to answer
I use Painter and Photoshop, and use ArtStudio and Procreate while on the go like you. Another key feature that I like about Artstudio, is that your pixels aren’t cropped when moved beyond image area. I know Procreate crops to control bloated file sizes, but this cropping is a deal-breaker when you’re trying to make image composites.
Procreate for casual sketching and quick doodles. Artstudio Pro for actual illustrations and finishing up pieces. I own both apps, but I find myself going back to Artstudio because it just does things better in my opinion. The brushes feel better and it has all the tools I would ask for any kind of photo manipulation. It reminds me more of using a regular drawing tablet with Photoshop or Paint tool SAI. With Procreate I just struggle and can't make the brushes work the way I want.
Seeing this reminds me that I actually have artstudio and have only tried it once. I should probably try it more as I have NEVER been able to get into procreate. I keep trying but it just doesn't do it for me. It just feels so weird and I can't figure out how to blend in it like Photoshop, CSP, and Medibang which I use regularly. So if Artstudio has a more photoshop-feel maybe it's time to try it again... I just feel stubborn about Procreate since it's all the rage. Like "I must be doing something very wrong if everyone except me loves it..."
Borodante: Not a review. Not a tutorial. Not a UA-cam video. Not a motion picture. Not a piece of media. Not a piece of information. Not a thing that even exists. Not a thing that either exists or not... Not a not...
Using Procreate and the iPad Pro as my main working station for three years now. And with Procreate supporting cmyk, I finally don’t have to go back in Photoshop.
Tbh, I see all the ArtStudio hype and tbh, it doesn’t mesh with me as much as Procreate does. I keep finding myself trying to go to ArtStudio but I never liked using Interfaces like Photoshop because of how disorganized and overwhelming it looks. Then again, I came from traditional art rather than digital art and the simplicity of Procreate’s interface just suits me better. I’ll probly try out ArtStudio Pro again eventually just so I can learn the interface more but I’ll stick to Procreate. Honestly, I’m glad the market has so many options for every artist to choose from. Both apps can only get better with the competition.
Art Studio is great and very powerful. I use it for certain things, but I find I still spend too much time tediously searching through menus. With Procreate, I just paint. The menus in Procreate are much more intuitive.
I love Artstudio pro.. am a full time digital artist. and am so comfortable in working in Artstudio pro noe that I don't want to go back to using my Photoshop. Procreate is just a hype. I love Artstudio pro..The wet brush engine in awesome in Artstudio...very much like Sai Paint Tool. Also the developer is really cool. They always listen what artists really want... ❤️
Exactly. Procreate is full of hype. It's not bad by any means, but people praise it like it's the second coming. It's still not too efficient to work with unlike CSP and ASP rich I've both tried for the iPad.
I guess it's just me, but since my style is not painterly and I use more ink techniques (like hatching, stippling, and so on), and I love how streamlined procreate is, I've tried art studio, and the only thing I thought was better than procreate was the reference window, but now that procreate added it, I kind of feel like I have no reason to switch
I prefer Artstudio because in procreate I couldn't recreate the simplest blending brush that I used all the time on desktop in ClipStudio Paint. And Artstudio has all of the functionality that I could possibly need, so it's an obvious choice
If Procreate's main selling point is its interface and "simplicity" or sleekness and modernness, then I prefer Artstudio Pro. Especially since the update. It made things sleeker and clearer while still keeping its core interface design. Personally coming from a background of drawing in Photoshop and Paint Tool Sai, I find it easier and more understandable to navigate in Artstudio Pro. I think your way of describing why people love or prefer Procreate is on point. If you want to make serious illustrations or professional work quality paintings/drawings then Artstudio Pro is your pal.
Oh and not that you can't make professional work quality art in Procreate, I just think Artstudio Pro is more intuitive and has better workflow for that level of work.
I am of the opinion that it's worth having both. There was a point where I preferred Artstudio to Procreate (v2-3), but Procreate has really pushed their game lately. I am currently really digging 5x, and the animation capabilities are awesome as well. That being said, it seems like when it comes to basic selection and shape tools, they still can't get it right. The quality of transformed objects also seems to noticeably detoriate more starting with Procreate 4 - though that was improved a lot with Procreate 5. However, despite its flaws, Procreate is just so damn easier to work in when it comes to tool access and seldom gets laggy; working in it is like butter. It's also important to note that Procreate also seems to be better supported and has a much stronger online presence and community. Going back to Artstudio though, it's probably the closest thing we have to Photoshop that isn't subscription based (cough, Clip Studio Paint) followed by Medibang (really lags at times), and the interface is just a lot easier to jump into for those coming from desktop apps, as you've stated. However, I still believe Procreate is easier and more beginner-friendly for those new to digital art and has a slicker and and more efficient workflow than Artstudio. Overall, I think professional artwork is easily achievable in both, and both have features worth using that the other doesn't. I'm somewhat biased because I've been using both apps since back when they basically costed nothing and can work in both easily lol
@M H Don't see how Windows has better performance than MacOS overall. Some programs may be better optimized for one or the other, but from an OS perspective, Macs are very stable, super responsive and streamlined... (overpriced though) Windows is just... Troubleshooting should not be a core element of the user experience
Procreate's interface is so dumb I lost braincells Everytime I use it. I moved to Adobe fresco because better interface. I deciding to try art studio pro.
All my friends, using iPad regularly or from time to time, gravitated towards ArtStudio, but I couldn't get into it that much. I used it couple of times while doing bigger projects including gradient masks and resolutions that wouldn't work on Procreate, but now I use only the later. It's exactly as you say, it's snappy, it's very apple-esque and I'm kind of messy/traditional artists and clean ProCreate interface just clicks to me. I put device on the stand, launch references on my desktop computer and it's just perfect for me.
Hey! A bit late, but Boro shows it in this video (I added the right timecode so you should get directly to the needed moment): ua-cam.com/video/N6A1rSU6Lm8/v-deo.html Hope it helps, even though it's been a month. Have a nice day. :)
From experience, I'd say not that much. Painting standing or with these kind of angles usually helps with exploiting the full arm to draw/paint, which means not always having all the pressure on the wrist (I might be wrong but this may be better for carpal canal and such). It also helps with adding "expressiveness", or being more confident with longer lines, etc. For the back and vertebral column at least, working at eye level should avoid the tendancy to bend ourselves over what we are doing, like a lot of us end up doing (being consciously or not). :)
I switched from Procreate to Artstudio Pro because it’s for my workflow way better. The seeking point for me was that I can have the brush pop-up window still open to switch very fast between different brushes and erasers. In Procreate is it always Auto closing the brush pop-up and that’s a workflow killer for me.
you can make a quick menu to switch between brushes and erasers. Only 6 options but, its enough for me. Its not only my favourite procreate feature but one of my favourite features in any program ever. Its like 6 shortcuts in one button. I always swipe down for eraser, up. I also use them for new layer and assist all the time.
According to the lucky Clan forums shape drawing tools are most likely coming in the next update. In that case I'll probably swap over to artstudio full time (assuming they're good)
I’m a casual hobbyist digital artist. I’m looking forward to mess with both of these after the update. I generally use procreate more but this update from ASpro looks great. Iv always loved the painting in AS.
Thanks Boro. Being a former professional animator now illustrator. I'm waiting right now for my new Ipad pro coming this week. Your video gave me new info on what kind of App that I should be trying. Thanks for the insight on the two most popular app. Much appreciated.
Hello Boro :) Thanks for this very welcome review (sort of) In short: Procerate + Artstudio + Affinity Designer + Affinity Photo = these is a great time for digital artists, especially on the iPad Pro side :) (When you will review Affinity Photo/Designer?) Anyway...based on my very personal experience, both on iPad Pro and PC/Mac/Wacom side, I think u're right. Procreate Vs Artstudio is not mainly a matter of "features" but a matter of "philosophy" and UX design. Both are SUPER GREAT apps certainly good for any professional digital painter/designer out there! I love both. But my preferred choice is Procreate. 90% of the time, when I have to create any sort of 2D graphics, I jump into Procreate :) My Wacom Cintiniq's standing in a corner, and very very rarely I need to switch from my iPad Pro/Procreate/Artstudio to my "legacy" PC/Mac/Wacom I can't wait to see the next generation of iPad Pro with its terrifying powerful A14X chip and new pencil with the new mini LED display :)
I'm more a laptop + art tablet person, but I've been in a deep depressive episode lately, to the point that pulling out my gaomon to work on csp seems like a daunting task that is so unappealing. My friend gifted me her old ipad pro and apple pencil (she asked, i did not say no), and procreate seemed like a good option. I did my research, asked friends who had it, and bought it when the tablet arrived. It works, it's not csp. But csp on the ipad is a subscription fee and i don't have access to paying for it every time. I like procreate as a sketching/inking kind of app. I like it. There's some features I wish it had, that was more like csp, but the ipad and procreate offer me a noncommittal situation where i can pick it up when the mood strikes me. I don't have to do any massive set up, i can just sit in bed and draw while I watch a movie or youtube video without having to mentally commit myself to the task. I've never actually heard of artstudio though. I guess it's something to look into one day. I do appreciate your reviews though, you are actually why I had bought the gaomon a while back while I was looking for cheap alternatives to the wacom. My friends are so jealous of it. X3c
Procreate also has now a Reference window/navigator & private layers to add ref's not showing in your time-lapse video, came out in 5X alongside the gradient maps etc
Honestly I feel like an artist shouldn't be restricted to just one software program. there’s gonna be some features or even brushes in each software that work better than others or you can work with multiple programs to get the look you’re looking for. I mainly use Procreate, MediBang Paint and Adobe Fresco for different reasons, and now I can look forward to playing with art studio too.
Not sure if you’ve done a video on clip studio, but I’d love to hear your opinion on CSP vs Art Studio for iPad. I’d really value your opinion because I find that I have a lot of the same opinions as you on art programs. I’m really loving CSP right now but I’m debating whether it’s worth the effort to try switching to Art Studio since it’s not subscription-based. I’ve already bought the art studio app but I haven’t had much motivation to test it out because I’m used to CSP at this point, plus I have tons of custom brushes that I spent forever creating and that I’d have to give up. Is it worth the effort to switch?
I love how those apps are trading blows: The closer they get to have the same functionalities, the more effort the developers will put in the next versions to attract more customers. Edit: great overview btw, you’re the best when it comes to “not reviewing” (😜) art applications
I’m team Procreate. Used since day one on my OG iPad from 10 years ago. Painting with my finger. So I kind of grew with it. Had both versions of art studio. Appreciated the void it tried to fill with Photoshop like features, but at the end I think Procreate got it right developing the app around the device, not trying to mimick a desktop software. Sometimes when I just want to play around I Chuck my iPad Pro away and sketch on Artflow on my Tab S6 lite. I kind of really like that app a lot, even though it misses a ton of features. The Pro and and the Cintiq come into play when I need to work.
ArtStudio doesn’t crop pixel information when moved beyond canvas area, and you can open larger files in ArtStudio. Procreate crops, and that sucks. Other than that, I like both as much as the other. Also like the fact that ArtStudio lets you lock layer positioning but not the ability to draw on that layer. Nice Photoshop feature carry-over.
Realy appreciate the video, Boro! I was a bit affraid of incoming changes in Artstudio but now I can say that there are more positives, definitely. To be honest I like the previous UI more but the brush section AND the new brushes are realy awesome. If there is anyone from luckyclan reading the comment section I have to say big THANK (and thank you Boro too)! PS: I love the possibility to record my painting process and WATCH it everytime I want even if the painting is not ready yet. I dont know exactly why, but it helps me to see mistakes I made (something like mirror does). I know it was here before 3.0 but I wanted to point it out, because it is very handy (and it helped me to create my first own digital painting video aswell) :)
Just discovered Art Studio after using Procreate for 5 years and this video popped up. Genuinely think the thick brushes are better in Artstudio, they blend so naturally. But Procreate's UI is still the easiest to dive into. They're so neck and neck though that I can't believe Art Studio isn't more popular. Also, Procreate 5x is named thus because Procreate 5, which came out last year, actually did have major updates like Animation support and Brush studio. So 5x is more of a minor update and not full fat Procreate 6. I don't think that's them being desperate!
I come from using a lot of desktop art software (krita, medibang, sai, clip, corel, photoshop as a school requirement lol) but I really do prefer Procreate over Artstudio. Something about the ipad doesn't make me want to use a keyboard. It feels a little "in the way" so I depend a lot on gestures and the gestures on Procreate are easier in my opinion. I set my eyedropper to single tap and tap and hold brings up the quick menu where I have things like flip, clear, copy, paste, etc. It just works out really nicely for my particular process. I do wish it had nicer, non-smeary blending like in Artstudio tho.
I just happened to open art studio for the first time in a long time lately and noticed the update. Definitely cool, and I think I'll have to play around with it again. I actually used to be all-in on the Art Studio side, but for the last few months I've enjoyed way more just doing sort of simulated pen and marker drawings in Procreate since it just felt way nicer using the built-in brushes there.
Unrelated but you can get the full version of corel painter 2020 (last years corel painter) from Humble Bundle right now for $30. Then upgrade later to 2021 for $150 if you want.
I'm a professional ui designer and ive been working in the industry for 15 years, i lead the design team of a 1000+ person company. and the spacing in artstudio looks very professional to me. I think it was a pretty harsh statement to make about the product to say they dont have a professional design team. The product looks very well thought out aesthetically and they almost certainly have very professional designers who should be proud of their work. The kind of smoothness you see from procreate comes more from time and testing, which requires the amount of users procreate has. the more users you have, the easier is to fine tune your interface.. but again, aesthetically i believe artstudio is flawless.
I started out with Clip studio paint on my desktop, and when I wanted to switch to iPad I was looking very much into apps to use. I knew procreate was incredibly popular but upon testing out with it I really didn't enjoy how it worked, I was missing a lot of features that I knew clip studio paint had (I didn't go for its mobile version because of the subscription plan) and I really was not the biggest fan of using a mainstream app. I've been working in ArtStudio for a year after seeing your videos on it, and it has been a great experience for me. I completely agree with your view that Procreate is good for the quick simple things and final effects/filters (even though I must admit that ArtStudio is able to compete in that fact, especially with the new update), but I think these two apps are incredibly dependant on the user. ArtStudio might be a great experience for some while for others Procreate is the way to go.
Wilkistration i considered the mobile version, even tested it out on my friend’s iPad, but in the end made the choice to find something else, the subscription plan wasn’t something I was a really great fan of, but functionality is literally just like desktop csp which is amazing!
@@zoevoss1672 Ah, that is fair! I'd say bith Artstudio and Procreate have their benefits, and Procreate having some Animation features aside, Artstudio is much more similar to CSP, well worth the 10.99 and a dive in to try out the brushes etc :)
Having the closest Photoshop experience is pretty much why I use Art Studio like you said. It's the only app on iPad I know off that does it incredibly well (for raster uses that is).
If you been on photoshop for years, Artstudio Pro is probably the app for you. The functions and interface from PS to ASP transitions better. Procreate is pretty much entirely different interface wise. You can also transfer your PS brushes to procreate now but they might not work the same. Both apps are great for sure
Hey man. Great video, it actually did make a difference. Let me explain. I´ve always been an Artstudio guy. I actually tried several times to switch to Procreate, mainly due to the hype around it. And also because I love Max Pack´s brushes. But, I don´t know, Artstudio always FELT better. And since Procreate 5X, I kinda forced myself to switch. BUT now, I guess I´m back at Artstudio. Again! haha Thanks. P.s. Nice to see you have a brush in there.
I have both Artstudio Pro old and new versions, and I am trying to get aquainted with Procreate. Both apps take time to learn, at least for me since I never used Photoshop (couldn't afford it). Thank you for this video, it's good to know that there are some great people who have actually tried Artstudio Pro, and/or ArtStudio the older app. Cheers!
I didn’t even realize that I had art studio pro on my iPad, until watching this review. I decided to give it a shot with my character designs. It seemed functional enough, although not quite as intuitive as I would like. After messing around a bit, I imported my drawing into procreate. As I begin to tweak my image, I realized that Procreate simply “felt” better. How is that even possible, I wondered. 🤔 How can “feeling” be injected into a software program? It didn’t even make sense 🤷🏾 Then I was reminded that there’s a ton of art out there, but the best art makes you actually “feel” something. I experienced that when standing in front of a van Gogh painting. The magic of his art made me actually feel his presence as I observed his painting. I literally had to look behind me, because it felt like he was just over my shoulder about to add another stroke. Now I cannot logically explain how to access and implement the “art of feeling’”, I just recognize when I’m in the presence of it. To me ASP was a functional utility, but lacked feeling. As Steve Jobs might say, ASP was like driving a truck, but Procreate is like riding a bike! I now realize that Apple is in the “feeling” business. More specifically, the feeling of LUXURY 💫 I have no intention of working HARDER, so that I can make more money. I only aspire to PLAY more freely, and create more fluently, so that I can “feel” more expressive, and perhaps my art can make my audience feel more ALIVENESS. So I can thank this reviewer for making me aware that like procreate, I’m also (joyfully) in the “feeling” business.
Procreate user here, this video made me want to try Artstudio. Looks really good and I never had tried before, looks exactly the type of depth I'm looking for (procreate is a bit too oversimplified sometimes), and it seems the brushes have a better texture too. So overall, maybe you'll convert me into an Artstudio user, let's see!
Since it’s been a year for you, I’m curious as a procreate user how your experience was with Artstudio. Or if you have given it a try? :) Maybe I’ll give it a try too if it has a better feel! (Procreate always makes me feel like my art has gone downhill until I go back to pen and paper and feel fine again.)
I bought the tutorial and I gotta say, it is really good so far. It has been a bit difficult to translate most of the things to clip studio paint (specially because I needed to create my own bruses to go along with the tutorial) but it is helping me a lot. Thanks for the recommendation and cupon code! :D
I tend to use Procreate, but I know exactly what you mean about it being more for quick drawings and sketches because I've told people the same thing. If I were doing illustration for my full-time job, I'd probably try out the desktop version. Trying to find a good replacement for my CS5.5 version of PS.
The interface threw me off so much when they changed it but it wasn’t long at all to get use to it. Feels a lot more streamlined now. Sticking to iPad still. I just don’t like booting up my power consuming monster of a computer if I don’t have to but I’m gonna be diving into oil painting later this month.
The power in Art studio that I already try is, YOU CAN USE PROFESSIONAL FREE PHOTOSHOP BRUSH, plus your brush lol. Dang that was amazing, the setting didnt change too much and I am glad for that. And I didnt have to go to my laptop to add effect now. And now you can make straight line and shape in Artstudio, even you cant edit it like in procreate, its still gamechanging because if you dont like how you make shape in photoshop, this is very useful in Artstudio. 100% working on ipad is best.
Great video with a pretty good vibe. :) You forgot the reference panel in procreate :) I’m using the ipad for drawing and nothing else, because I need to bring it with me every day, so the next best thing should be a surface or a mobilestudio but they are meh.. I notice too that the ergonomy is not the best and I wish they just give me a 16 inch ipad pro and at least 8 gb of ram. And I’m using procreate, I have Artstudio also but it was way too clunky to me and I get used to procreate already as you said the interface was so much better there so I never get over on testing the brushes and draw something actually, but I will get another chance to it sometimes.
I'm waiting on infinite painters update. I've gone back to procreate for this update, gradient maps are something I've been wanting for a while now. But infinite painter really has just so much more going for it. It's toolset is just much more comprehensive, especially for perspective grids and editing. Pity it's brush engine just doesn't handle dillution as well. I enjoy the oilyness of that in procreate. Reminds me of Corel painter. I'll probably jump between the two apps, depending on what infinite painters new update adds
Only thing currently on my Procreate wishlist are adjustment layers - I know the 'pencil' option kind of addresses that but it doesn't let you go back in and edit the settings or even outright delete it, once you've applied the adjustment, it's permanent.
that’s pretty much my biggest complain too!! sometimes i like the effects but i’d rather be able to see what it looks like originally without the effect, so i pretty much have to make a duplicate of the original so i can see both the original and the one with effects, which is sort of a pain
The best thing about the Procreate is that brushes we create can sell with your own ID so no one can misuse it which I never have seen in any app! not comparing but very useful for brush creators!
@BoroCG I have the desktop version for mac and its not a great experience. If they could port the interface they have setup in the app it would be great but we will see what they do in the next year or so. I just really love artstudio pro because of how the brushes feel. There just something in procreate the *feels* wrong for me. no matter how much i push through. When i try do the same this on artstudio, it feels natural and i can just get to the art instead of trying to get procreate to work how i want it.
i think you're the first person I've seen to put this into words! procreates brush engine feels off, it's so hard for me to use because even if i have stabilization turned off it feels slow and straightened somehow
When I bought my first iPad, I started with ArtStudio, and a few other drawing a painting app, but not Procreate (PC). I used Sketchbook Pro (SBP) as well, and like it for drawing. But then here came PC. I really tried to like ArtStudio, and SBP... Cut to the chase, I have only one drawing and painting app now...PC. (FYI, I bought your app but it seemed to much like Procreate....soooo.) How I'm using Procreate: My processes are complicated, depending on the project. Essential, I use PC for concept sketches, and final rendering. Sometimes I use Photoshop, especially when creating embellish 2.5D text effects, photo enhancementBut not illustrations. There "were" times when I used my Wacom® tablet, because I just needed to do a quick render. But now, if I can use the mouse, I'll port the files to procreate and have some fun. Basically, I'm working exclusively in Procreate, for Illustration work, of any nature. He I was struggling a bit in Procreate, but mission accomplished. ua-cam.com/video/U_KCEmUBL0M/v-deo.html
ill have to give artstudio a try since painting in photoshops been my thing for years. procreats great but the "wow" factors dont wow me...its just more things tolearn and remember. id rather go with what im used to.
i use ipad daily, both for study and for drawing, when i am at work/out of home Regarding Procreate, I will say that we will probably be able to make friends when the gradient fill option is added to it. But at the moment, Artstudio looks much more attractive to me personally.
I was 100% Procreate for a long time and now i'm trying to learn to use Photoshop more. I think I like Procreate more but Photoshop is the standard and also makes finding reference and using it easier.
New to Apple devices in the last month. I've only ever worked in traditional media. Bought tons of different apps and have settled on ArtStudio Pro as my go-to. Procreate is too lightweight and feels more for lightweight digital appearing artwork. It seems farther from traditional media than ASP. I will be doing some published work from the iPad, but will only be using ASP. There are a couple other programs which I like, as well, but Procreate is lower on the list.
The great Boro did it again. Two things: first of all, you should get back to iPad just cause it is gorgeous. And Artstudio on the desktop is actually very potent. I’m definitely using photoshop because it is simply robust. Artstudio desktop and mobile versions, like you said, are even a PS replacement for professional work. Ahhh I was forgetting the second thing and it is The Outlandish Curiosity. Can’t wait for more of that. Cheers
Damn this video was very useful for me . i used to like more Art studio pro for the brush engine and for the more realistic wet paint simulation but with this last update procreate got some decent "wet paint" brushes too that for me is a gamechanger feature . I think i willt try to use procreate more.
One thing that really struck me in Artstudio Pro was that, like, You can set your color wheel to use RYB as primaries... As opposed to, you know, the standard RGB? So what you end up with is a traditional color wheel! With traditional primary colours! I know it's a bit of a minor thing but it made me giggle quite a bit
I just bought art studio pro because I remembered that I dont know five years ago I used the Iphone version of art studio and I just realized they are from the same developers. And if I think about how many awesome features the iphone version five years ago had I getting kinda hyped to try out the art studio pro ipad version :D
As someone new to art/digital art, last time I did anything art related was maybe 15 years ago, I tend to lean towards art studio pro. For a few reasons. Before I went full iPad only I spent a lot of time with photoshop post processing photography. So ASP feels familiar. Next the brush engine in ASP feels so much better to use. Procreate just feels really off. I think it has to do with how ASP uses a global pressure curve as well as pressure curves inside the brush dynamics as well which leads to tons of control customization. Last but by far not the least is the flat blur average blending. This is by far so natural looking and let’s you keep a nice paint like clean blend without making the transition look so fuzzy. As someone who leans towards that painterly approach this is just a must have.
Procreate just has the best sketching drawing experience still. I have both, but I realized what Art Studio Pro does, is what I want to do on the dekstop, in a controlled environment. I seemingly only want my mobile drawing thing to do sketching properly. BTW CSP just updated their engine/program (windows/mac) big time, any chance you going over that too?
hey Boro, just wanted to say: awesome videos really looking forward for new episodes. one question: the case for your Ipad pro (its 1st gen Ipad pro if I remember correctly from your previous videos?) can I ask the name of the case and where did you bought it?
Never tried art studio pro....and I want to, I think. Procreate feels....different. I'm learning more about making my own brushes with Procreate, but I'd gone about five months being pissed off I bought it. It's a giant learning curve, I guess. I wanted to have a mobile way to make digital art...and everything I downloaded to do that was a disappointment in one way or another. Maybe I need artstudio pro, though!
Man I'm loving procreate but with hearing that Art Studio imports the PS brushes perfectly that's kind of a big deal. I wanna be able to seamlessly go between PC and iPad and that feature along means no fucking around with brushes in ProCreate when I don't even know the half of them. I guess i'll just have to try both lmao
I am new to digital and this is exactly what I'm finding, as well. ASP just feels exactly right.
I have them both, Procreate drains the battery faster (3 hours of painting), while in Artstudio pro I can go to 5 straight hours
Sekkat Aziz
Probably because procreate saves your work on the fly.
Anyway, now I have more reasons to try Artstudio.
I ran ASP for 3.5 hours straight yesterday, unplugged at full brightness and only got down to 60% battery on my iPad :)
Not only the battery life gets improved with ASP but you can add as many layers as you want no matter your doc size.
I think time lapse recording in Procreate should always be turned off if you don't have plans to show your progress to anyone. I noticed a slight reduce to battery drain.
So that's why my battery drains thanks for the info
:) have a nice day
Are you still using the app? How is it going? I'm a Procreate user and I'm curious about Artstudio Pro.
@@RAH854 Thanks for the in-depth reply! I think I'll look into ASP soon, I might switch between the two.
@@fetaup9293 your welcome hope I helped
@@fetaup9293 hello im curious- did you end up trying ASP? (:
I use Painter and Photoshop, and use ArtStudio and Procreate while on the go like you.
Another key feature that I like about Artstudio, is that your pixels aren’t cropped when moved beyond image area. I know Procreate crops to control bloated file sizes, but this cropping is a deal-breaker when you’re trying to make image composites.
The color picker has been always there. What’s new is that you can drag and drop from the pallet now in procreate.
Member of Artstudio Pro gang here. Let's see if I should give Procreate another go...
I doubt anyone will change their opinion
did you find art studio missing brush strokes after the update?
Same for me 😂
I use procreate for sketches and Artstudio for actual projects
I have both the apps as well. I haven't updated to Procreate 5x yet, but I'm liking the ArtStudio Pro 3 already.

True for a. Erin Erin procreate is great and art studio is for people who have very organised workflows and good knowledge of digital art
How about Affinity Photo for iPad?
@@icemarle totally agreed. I do own Procreate as well. But Artstudio pro is really awesome.
It’s not all hype, just different from what you are used to.
Oh and not that you can't make professional work quality art in Procreate, I just think Artstudio Pro is more intuitive and has better workflow for that level of work.
ive seen super professional work come from procreate. in fact more so from procreate just because of the popularity
What about your app? Is it still something you'll be working on?
Does someone know what stand he uses for his ipad? because it looks amazing
Hey! A bit late, but Boro shows it in this video (I added the right timecode so you should get directly to the needed moment): ua-cam.com/video/N6A1rSU6Lm8/v-deo.html
Hope it helps, even though it's been a month. Have a nice day. :)
Arm probably would get tire really fast at the angle
From experience, I'd say not that much. Painting standing or with these kind of angles usually helps with exploiting the full arm to draw/paint, which means not always having all the pressure on the wrist (I might be wrong but this may be better for carpal canal and such). It also helps with adding "expressiveness", or being more confident with longer lines, etc.
For the back and vertebral column at least, working at eye level should avoid the tendancy to bend ourselves over what we are doing, like a lot of us end up doing (being consciously or not). :)
me and my big dumb dumb brain: Ok well, imma just buy both
That's what I did! lol
Lmao same!
Wow
@@cesarflores1293 i like variety! its only like $9 each anyways compared to like a $60 computer drawing program 😝
Is it worth it?
@@spiralmoment that's nothing for me, the quick menu is still pita because its lagging on my iPad pro
Procreate needs a magic wand tool that doesn't suck. Artstudio needs drawing shape tools that don't suck
Haven't used Artstudio yet, and I have to say I am in love with Procreate but will definitely have a look at Artstudio 👍
Thanks Boro. Being a former professional animator now illustrator. I'm waiting right now for my new Ipad pro coming this week. Your video gave me new info on what kind of App that I should be trying. Thanks for the insight on the two most popular app. Much appreciated.
Hello Boro :) Thanks for this very welcome review (sort of)
In short: Procerate + Artstudio + Affinity Designer + Affinity Photo = these is a great time for digital artists, especially on the iPad Pro side :)
(When you will review Affinity Photo/Designer?)
Anyway...based on my very personal experience, both on iPad Pro and PC/Mac/Wacom side, I think u're right.
Procreate Vs Artstudio is not mainly a matter of "features" but a matter of "philosophy" and UX design.
Both are SUPER GREAT apps certainly good for any professional digital painter/designer out there!
I love both.
But my preferred choice is Procreate.
90% of the time, when I have to create any sort of 2D graphics, I jump into Procreate :)
My Wacom Cintiniq's standing in a corner, and very very rarely I need to switch from my iPad Pro/Procreate/Artstudio to my "legacy" PC/Mac/Wacom
I can't wait to see the next generation of iPad Pro with its terrifying powerful A14X chip and new pencil with the new mini LED display :)
That's the benefit of market competition.
Excellent conversation - thanks. I use Procreate (just a beginner) but I'm curious enough from this video to try Artstudio too! Thanks!
I don´t own an iPad but I really love your content, so, here I am
Sus
Yay! I was waiting for it, I love your comparison videos.
For illustration with text, I still like Artstudio best. I use an iPad Pro, and used to use a desktop with GIMP. I do like Procreate for some things.
I’m working on my ipad pro all the time and I prefer Artstudio Pro. Procreate is doing it’s marketing thing really well tho : P
PlusSe7en I second you. I really like art studios new interface
I agree. I really enjoy sketch in Procreate, but most of the time I will use Artstudio or fresco then move to Photoshop/CSP on Mac.
CSP is available on iPad, well worth it imo as someone who learned on CSP desktop
Wilkistration agreed!
It didn’t even make sense 🤷🏾
Then I was reminded that there’s a ton of art out there, but the best art makes you actually “feel” something.
More specifically, the feeling of LUXURY 💫
I have no intention of working HARDER, so that I can make more money.
I only aspire to PLAY more freely, and create more fluently, so that I can “feel” more expressive, and perhaps my art can make my audience feel more ALIVENESS.
So I can thank this reviewer for making me aware that like procreate, I’m also (joyfully) in the “feeling” business.
Definitely an iPad user and definitely my preference goes to Procreate. I’am an Apple aficionados of Apple since IIe some thirty year ago. So…
Procreate user here, this video made me want to try Artstudio. Looks really good and I never had tried before, looks exactly the type of depth I'm looking for (procreate is a bit too oversimplified sometimes), and it seems the brushes have a better texture too. So overall, maybe you'll convert me into an Artstudio user, let's see!
I recommend checking it out! I switched over from procreate to Artstudio a while ago and I don’t regret it at all, Artstudio is great
Did you end up trying out ASP? And if so, how did it go! (:
Since it’s been a year for you, I’m curious as a procreate user how your experience was with Artstudio.
Or if you have given it a try? :)
Maybe I’ll give it a try too if it has a better feel!
NVM, clip studio now supports ABR brushes.
You forgot the reference panel in procreate :)
I’m using the ipad for drawing and nothing else, because I need to bring it with me every day, so the next best thing should be a surface or a mobilestudio but they are meh..
It got updated ,its awesome ! Also they have the liquify tool ,my favorite thing from Photoshop
@@nlmlkadhsu1868 oh when did that update go live?
@@Cernunnnos I think on Android,. It's not iPad yet
@@nlmlkadhsu1868 ahh right. Yea they hit a snag on the Apple store. There was some sort of glitch they had to fix before apple would let them list it.
What is the brand and the name of the iPad stand that you are using?
He is talking about this stand in this video: ua-cam.com/video/N6A1rSU6Lm8/v-deo.html
Aliexpress link is in the first comment.
I'm using my iPad Pro 10.5 with Procreate as my main work station.
Oh hey I didn’t realize the blur wet mix thing in the procreate update! I can finally simulate the default PaintToolSAI brushes!
10:51 I hate having to double-swipe to switch tasks, too. But you can always pinch in with 4 fingers for that!
Or swipe up with four fingers. Fast to go home, slower to see the open apps
I hate that you can't swipe from right with 4 fingers (or something) to see the floating window
Love your editing!! So professional
Thanks for the review! I love your iPad stand. Where did you purchase it? I can’t seem to find it online. Thx!
when will apple make an extra long or big ipad screen or somthing and name it Ipad -studio-
I have thought about it to. Maybe if more of us ask- they will.
Someone is running from the black widow
Nah I'm running from my Autumn "depression"
Seasonal Depressive Disorder is catching up
You should try light therapy
BoroCG pls don’t watch sad anime
I use ipad as my main work station (after using different screen displays and other graphic tablets for years) and my main art app is clip studio
i use ipad daily, both for study and for drawing, when i am at work/out of home
Regarding Procreate, I will say that we will probably be able to make friends when the gradient fill option is added to it.
Both apps need a more robust way to organize brushes, especially for all the brush hoarders out there. A nested approach would really help!
I use them both, ArtStudio have my preferred brushes, but am gradually moving back to Procreate
Man I have been watching your video for years and I just realised I'm not subscribed. You are awesome
One thing that really struck me in Artstudio Pro was that, like,
You can set your color wheel to use RYB as primaries... As opposed to, you know, the standard RGB?
So what you end up with is a traditional color wheel! With traditional primary colours!
I know it's a bit of a minor thing but it made me giggle quite a bit
I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that, small but great feature
I use both but have been impressed with Realistic paint studio. Simple and to the point but for me fun to use. :)
If any of you guys want to talk about boro, then I set up a discord server for him. This is the link: discord.gg/GzGhZ27
wHAT SCREEN PROTECTOR u use? Or is OK not to use any, for the sake of seeing the color with out a plastic film?
Seems like the right time to ask, How's your app going?
Sucks. I can't code well enough to push things forward, and my coding partner isn't rushing things eather.
Please can you review Affinity Designer? Specifically as a painting app?
I just bought art studio pro because I remembered that I dont know five years ago I used the Iphone version of art studio and I just realized they are from the same developers. And if I think about how many awesome features the iphone version five years ago had I getting kinda hyped to try out the art studio pro ipad version :D
and I hope Lucky Clan really dont have a designer otherwise they'll be real sad when they sees this video :D
I kinda wish you could use both as a trial to see if it works for you
RE: End of the video; FYI, This was not an upgrade of Procreate from 4 to 5X, but from 5 to 5X.
Love your content, both videos and paintings.
I really like your stand for the iPad. Can you give me details on what it is and where I can get one?

@@frohwitzholunder2838 Many thanks!
well I use an iPad for my main workstation and yeah I prefer procreate than artstudio but I love the new update for artstudio!make it so much nicer
Hi BoroCG, thank you for the review. This question might be off topic but what stand are you using for your tablet. Looks very versatile.
That ipad stand looks great where can I get one?
hey Boro, just wanted to say: awesome videos really looking forward for new episodes. one question: the case for your Ipad pro (its 1st gen Ipad pro if I remember correctly from your previous videos?) can I ask the name of the case and where did you bought it?
I need a link to that iPad stand!!
Good/ helpful video. Thanks! :) I like the 3D paint brushes in Art Studio 3.
@borodante what is that metal stand your are using? I am looking for a sturdy stand for drawing on ipad (and avoid neck pain).
