  • The Fofie Festival in Tanoboase (Techiman District, Brong-Ahafo, Ghana) happens once in a lifetime. The celebration arises from a sense of renewal and respect for the ancestors. It begins with a procession to the river where the ancestral stools are to be taken to the water for purification. Nana Dwomo, the chief of Tanoboase, is carried on a palanquin to the riverside. The chief cheerfully waves his sword in defense of evil spirits and his fly-whisk to purify the air, all the while boasting of his good health. Once near the riverside, it is customary that the chief get down from the palanquin and walk to the water. He then selects two broad leaves which he uses to scoop up water from the river and drizzle it on the linen-wrapped ancestral stools. Guns blast. Horns blow. Dancing commences. The ancestors have been honored. The village rejoices.
