The Songs of Nick Drake: Way to Blue www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00s06v5
Filmed at the Barbican in January 2010 and curated by Joe Boyd, producer and general champion of Nick Drake, 90 minutes of performance highlights from a diverse but renowned cast of modern day troubadours.
Presenting their own interpretations of Drake's songs are Vashti Bunyan, Green Gartside, Lisa Hannigan, Scott Matthews, Teddy Thompson, Krystle Warren, Robyn Hitchcock, Kirsty Almeida and Harper Simon.
A celebration of the songs of Nick Drake, the concert features the original orchestrations of Nick's friend, the late Robert Kirby. It includes a house band anchored by Danny Thompson, the legendary bassist who played on Drake's first two albums.
Highlights include Teddy Thompson's version of the timeless River Man, Lisa Hannigan's haunting and compelling version of Black Eyed Dog, Krystle Warren's bluesy take on Time Has Told Me, Robyn Hitchcock's psychedelic spin on Parasite and Neil MacColl's accomplished rendition of the classic Northern Sky.
During his lifetime Nick Drake found little mainstream success, but since his death at the untimely age of 26 in 1974 he has been revered as one of the most influential and important English songwriters of his era.
It's so surreal to me that music from so long ago, a different country, a different time, made by a man who didn't even make it to 30 years old, can reach across time and touch so many people with such deep relevance and resonance. Something about it just does my head in - there's a timeless quality to all of his songs that make them sound like they were written yesterday, just for you, and you alone.
The power of music is beautiful
Wow... Well said...
Beautifully expressed.
If only Nick Drake were alive today to not only see how much his music is loved but how open-ended for interpretation it is by other musicians. Gold standard.
I'm crying. Did him justice for sure.
@@ohoto3896 Oh my God if I had a dollar every time I cried after listening to one of Nick' songs I'd be as rich as Elon Musk or darn close to it.
@@blaumausfrau Black eyeed dog..... growin old and I wanna go hoome. black eyed dog.....
Being a spiritual whack job I PRAY he is somewhere and does know how much people like you and me love the guy He was just insanely brilliant.
Nick was a genius...like many imperfect pretty broken flowers..
Great to see Danny Thompson ,Nicks original Bass player, playing. What a career playing in Pentangle, with Nick Drake, John Martyn..A true legend.
danny thompson's career is insane - he even played with Tim Buckley in the Albert Hall back in the day. As well as with RIchard Thompson (also on Nick Drake albums) and, believe it or not, Thunderbirds theme music and Cliff Richard's not quite winning eurovision congratulations
I think we can forgive him the Cliff Richards track!
Could We Say...'Legend'..Xx
I was there and it was the best evening of music i have ever experienced.
Im a Nick Drake fan and i have to say this cover is absolutely great.
There is music for dancing and music for the soul. Thanks to Nick. Close my eyes and visited a tiny part of a paradise. Breathless.
Great ...so RADIANT & PSYCHEDELIC....ALL PURPLES & BLUES .
I cannot imagine a better rendering of this song, and do not wish it.
I'm sure Nick Drake and Robert Kirby would be proud of seeing this lot perform their song and arrangement, with such a large and respectful crowd enjoying it. Something they've never witnessed in real life.
Can't agree enough, excellent cover
Nick Drake is more popular now then when he was alive this always seems to happen with talented artists
@@davidmitchell2242 Sadly its because of party politics. Rich major labels have pushed crap onto the airwaves while more talented people like Nick Drake suffered. You can't believe how many worthless people in the music industry made money - a regular paycheck doing bull crap while Nick Drake lived in obscurity and poverty. The Music industry is as broken as our border but unlike our border, very few people know it and the ones who do like George Howard top dog at BERKLEE SCHOOL OF MUSIC are getting paid to teach lies.
Thank you Lisa. You bring great honour to Nick. I’m sure he’d love to see you sing.
"Stay indoors beneath the floors, talk with neighbours only...the games you play make people say you're either sad or lonely", the hollow lost world of Nick pretty much summed up in a couple of lines. Three albums and infinity, this song haunts me...but I can't find a better one.
Lisa sings beautifully and does this song more than justice. Nick Drake = Timeless!
I can't help but contemplate Nick's reaction to being so beloved by his musician peers and the world. He is one of the few souls whose talent was so evolved he transcended any of his contemporaries and today is recognized as the greatest singer/songwriter to have ever lived. The complex picking patterns, alternative tunings, and beautiful lyrics touch the mind and spirit. From everyone who loves you so much, Nick, "We are everywhere"! Bobby j
What a great cover! I like the oboe substituted for sax. Wonderful and sharing!
Yes Nic can do no wrong and I love John would but I completely agree that I think the sax threw the song out of whack on BRYTER LAYTER a very good substitute I wish they had used it on the album I think it was one mistake the John Wood made
LISA is amazing. After hearing this marvelous cover I WISH the BIG WISH they had let her do WAY TO BLUE by herself without the other two guys. They're both good singers. But the tune would have been much better as Drake sang it SOLO.
Lisa should have sang the excellent string backed song by her lonesome
If this song is not on one of her CDs already, it should be. She sings it beautifully and her dress creates a good feeling for the song. Thank you for putting this on youtube.
I think its really good. Lisa nailed it. I think some people may confuse subtlety with lack of passion.
Lisa Hannigan is a one off sublime singer....
She gets it. And so does the band.
mrs Lisa hannigan . has a beautifull voice. beautifull lady. lovely song. very outstanding performance by her. Sending best wishes for the future. Lisa. X💖💖🌹🌹💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐
This sounds just as haunting as the original. I got chills!
Bullshit, lol
@@bennuballbags2is there something wrong with you
the chime of the city clock. lovely song. Lisa has a beautifull voice . beautifull lady. lovely to listen to. Look forward in listening to meny more of Lisa songs sending best wishes to Lisa . And the orchestra music. very outstanding performance by Lisa 💖🌹💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐
Incredible. Her voice is like velvet cake. Awesome cover of an awesome tune.
I love her split-second intensity when she sings the word "weird". She means it. I've grown to love this version. Viva LH and musicians. Great choice of singer.
Ok I have to admit I was not expecting anything near as beautiful as this. Wow.
I was at this, and it was quite good.there was a previous one at the barbican on september 24th 1999 with joe boyd robert kirby and others. coincidentally that was exactly 30 years after I first saw him. its frightening the time thing.
I simply love Lisa. Nick would be proud.
L.H. & N.D. are two of a kind really. Is there even a word for it.
Lovely song. Lovely voice beautifull lady. great voice wishing you all the best for the future love. Very outstanding performance by lisa xxx 💖🌹💐
Lisa's vocals of Nick Drake float through the string arrangement here. Pure stunning delight!
More then wonderful! I think this tune's overlooked and neglected, and at the same time one of the most beautiful ones made by Nick. And yes, Lisa is gorgeous!
Lisa is gorgeous and you can see she's honored to be able to honor Nick> She's glowing
This is probably my favourite of all of Nic Drake’s music I have heard. It is profoundly beautiful. All his music is profoundly beautiful but there is something about this one that really speaks to us right now I think and it moves me so much relistening to this now. I went looking for it and because I had a dream last night where I was singing Nick Drake’s song, this song, but I was singing it to new lyrics that I was writing in the dream. Very haunting indeed and very beautiful
She is highly talented, beautiful in every sense of the word, and, best of all, she's Irish!! 🇮🇪 One of many national treasures we have in the music world.
@@blaumausfrau Exectly, there's a glow there that she emanates that is creating an aura and this whole thing of her talent, beauty, love and respect for Nick and all people who've been honored to work with him, his wonderful music and soul, that all comes to synergy in this performance. Honestly, I've never heard of her before I stumbled upon this video, but immediately I fell in love. I've seen her live some time ago now in Ljubljana and it was wonderfull!
Discovered Lisa by accident, I love her voice. She isn't Nick Drake, she's Lisa Hannigan!
Same, I was searching for The Who live in Chile and for mistake I wrote "The Who Chime" and this appeared. So I click it because it said Nick Drake and now I'm in love of her.
ahhh danny thompson, his playing always warms my heart xD
Nessuno la potrebbe interpretare con la stessa dolcezza e intensità. Grande omaggio a Nick.
Whether her voice would grab Simon Cowell or not is totally irrelevant..... she/they are paying tribute to Nick Drake, and personally it made my hair stand on end and brought tears to my eyes (in a good way!! lol). As one who does very close covers, I like the way they recreated the sound.
I could listen to this again and again...someome put the concert on cd.
It's likely that I've watched this over and over again more than any vid ever. Thanks Nick, and thank you Lisa.
Fantastic…..this nick drake songs goes right into the core of your soul
love how Lisa sings this song...one of my favourites at the moment
One of the more beautiful things I've experienced. I just fell in love.
Be still my beating heart,, what a performance.
great Sting Song lol
I couldn't understand the genius of his songwriting until I heard other people singing his songs on that BBC4 concert , because, to be honest, I didn't really take to his voice.
But I think all the musicians at this concert did him proud. Loved it.
Man to me to say "I DIDNT TAKE TO HIS VOICE" is like rejecting cool water after a 3 day trek in the Gobi Desert. I think Nick has one of the smokiest most mysterious voices on the planet (or now in the stars) his voice is uniquely him I love him and I love his voice. But you are right; His songs ARE brilliant and if it took this adoring group of musicians to get you to see that then GOOD!
Sometimes the world and its pain and misery just overwhelmes me, often. But, to me.....this song and its deliverence is what lies beyond all that. So beautiful....beyond words. :)
" At the chime of a city clock, put up your road block, hang on to your ground, for a stone in a tin can is wealth for a city man "
Lovely version of one of my fave Drake songs! The orchestra was impeccable too!
She is an Angel.
Very well done. Not as chilling as Nick's version, but that is impossible.
I love Lisa’s interpretation of this wonderful song!
Stunning! I come back to this song over & over!
stunning....a perfect interpretation.
Beautiful. so gentle with so much respect and love to Nick. amazing production of the BBC.
Singing like a angel
Omg I think Nick Drake would have loved this
These tunes are out of this world and their would have been more if his life had not been cut short while suffering depression
Nice to see Danny Thompson on stand up bass, who played with Nick Drake back in the day, as well as with John Martyn, Tim Buckley, etc.
Amazing bassist
Beautiful cover.❤️✌️
Some pray for green paper. Others prey for green paper. I will be neither. RIP Nick Drake. Such a beautiful enchanting rendition - I first heard this one October after coming home from the wild where I rushed in the rain for a shelter and struggled to keep a fire alight. That night, I prayed for warmth.
a touching performance by lisa; it does make an amateur like me wonder why a man who could create something this beautiful wasnt a household name in his lifetime
Nick Drake is by far not the only example - unfortunately!
I discovered two artists in lockdown: scott walker and nick drake…..both changed my life forever…..
Soooo beautiful !
very nice, hope to see her live in concert someday
Beautiful cover
Great Nick Drake and great Lisa!!!
Lovely version.
Beautyful song, sung with her calm and wonderful voice.
Bravo !! Cheers from Ontario, Canada
WOW!!!
Never heard of this young lady before - but I'm glad I did now!
lovely , beautiful song
Since it's written by Nick, he has the most clear image of the song. I personally think that's the difference between this version and the original one.
She is Brilliant.
I love this one.
Beautiful.
had to be very courageous to try to sing Nick Drake song, Lisa is stunning
Lisa Hannigan, you are the best. Thanks for this performance and stellar live recording!
She seems to cry the words out of her mouth
Heart-skippingly lovely cover
Exquisite. Lisa's voice is perfectly matched to this song.
this is superb
Lisa does an awesome job with this great song!!! Thanks for posting.
"Drake's works of quiet dignity will never need such homages."
Agreed, but these people decided to honour him anyway. First and foremost, they are paying their respect. Can't see much wrong with that. I remember seeing her perform this (her own song I believe) on TV during Glasonbury a few years ago, and thinking it was great:
ua-cam.com/video/NoFWc_9T2fE/v-deo.html
She smiles a lot. maybe she's just a happy girl. Close your eyes if her appearance offends you. She sounds pretty good to me
Beautiful rendition.
Beautiful
Beautifully done!!!
just this minute seen this on tv, mesmerising, awesomeness.
Many thanks, I was looking everywhere for this concert ! the only place I seemed to find it was on HD Preview at John Lewis! .... I saw it three times on iplayer but didnt get chance to record on TV. Big Nick Drake fan and live down the road from his grave / ashes in Tanworth in arden. Like a lot of these compositions from modern artists but also check out some of the Elton John ones.... mad how Elton John wanted to cover Drake in the 70's look how big a star he could have been.
Such an amazing cover. Love this song so much, and this is such a great version.
love this concert ! great to see Danny still on the bass ....
👌🌹 Magnifique !🌸✨
For me one of the top 5 Nick Drake songs. Very well done by Lisa, in her own way.
Fantastic ! Bravo
This is a beautiful cover- Lisa is a joy!
Excellent interpretation, splendid production!
exquisite, as always, Lisa.
Great job! She captures Drake's atmosphere and feel. I miss Nick Drake too.
Thanks so much...that was awesome
Just discovered Nick Drake after hearing an interview with Joe Boyd on NPR. What amazing music. I'm totally smitten with him, and a few covers of his music including this.
Nick would have loved this. Vincent Van Drake...
I wish they had met in life. Imagine how awesome their kids would have been.
I love her !
Beautiful Lisa. The orchestra is excellent too. Love your Black Eyed Dog also. I am now a Nick Drake fan. I also saw your practice session with the Australian Band Luluc singing Saturday Sun. The harmony was awesome. Thank you julieharpz for uploading this.
