  • UA-cam is NOT my full time job! My "day job" is Director of Operations for URM Academy/Nail The Mix. In this video I talk about exactly what that means, and most importantly how the operations mindset can help you grow whatever you are doing.

    It makes sense now how you manage PRMBA so well. Many people have a hard time realizing that skills you think are specific are easily transferable. As a person who is transitioning from marketing to IT, there are valuable insights I have from working in marketing that allow me to look at problems differently than most of my peers. Learning is for life, you never stop.

    You call it an operator outlook. In college the same concept was taught to me as systems thinking. This kind of thinking can be applied to a lot of various things in life like you said! And, it's also relatively simple to grasp. Definitely one of the most beneficial things I have learned.

    • @FinnMckentyPRMBA
      @FinnMckentyPRMBA  4 роки тому +1

    I own/ operate my own HVAC business, and literally work on machines. Like you said, business requires constant evaluation, and there's always something to 'tweak' that will make things run smoother. Although the logistics can be tiring (I often commute 1Hour+ to jobsites), I enjoy the challenge presented by the dynamics of the market/ life. As for your videos.. I thoroughly enjoy your insight/ willingness to share your experiences. I look forward to new releases. You're very humble, straightforward, and easy to understand.

    Super interesting to hear you talk about everything as "system." I'm curious to learn how you arrived at that model, since I view business & work the same way but learned it in abstract by studying math and economics in school first. I had the model already but needed to figure out my field, healthcare software, and what the "system" is afterwards.

    Dude, this is such an awesome video. I’m a communications major specialising in writing and videography. I very much enjoy doing these things, especially videography, but lately I’ve been thinking if there is another skill set related to my degree I could adopt that might be a bit more practical and lucrative in the professional world. I feel like what that is is understanding the ins and outs marketing. What you are talking about here is something I would love to do, while also being involved in producing content.
    Just want to say thanks for the video. It’s helped me to determine how I should be taking my career path. Very helpful

    I work in a DevOps (developer operations) role at a tech company (and obviously slam that metal sickness on the nights and weekends). Cool to see that a business operations role is pretty similar! We're both looking at graphs everyday and trying to make them go up or down one way or another. Hopefully the money graph keeps going up and the downtime graph keeps going down!

    Dude, yes! I work management in operations and that's exactly it. There are systems that function as "machines" is probably the best way to put it, but I think of it as just systems, and the systems output various things in various ways. I like operations because these systems are all very different from Industry to industry so if you switch industries, even if you're operations in both, what you're going to be doing is going to be very different because you're always interacting with the core functions of the business. Like one of the things I do really well is designing schedules because my industry operates 24 hours a day, and that creates a lot of coverage issues. If I worked in insurance, I'd have to percieve my systems differently to understand those inputs and outputs, and my expertise maybe not what's best for that kind of organization and it'd be nice versa for someone in management overseeing insurance operations.
    Good stuff.

    So cool to see this, as I subscribed to nail the mix for the first time last night. Your Facebook ad for this months song was what did it for me, as I think The Adventure is one of the greatest songs ever made, No hyperbole. To be honest, I might be a dip in and out subscriber, as acoustic, singer songwriter, pop, and other lighter genres are my wheelhouse. But, I’m sure I’m going to find that I can learn a lot from any genre/producer/song, and will get addicted to the monthly routine and potential to win Factor. For my taste, it would be awesome to start seeing sample drum with Guitar productions, maybe get Kris Crummett to do a nothing, nowhere song off of the reaper album. Thanks for all your awesome content on both channels!

      Dude you've got more chance of a midget winning a high jump contest than getting your band mates to change their approach, I've played in bands for years and it doesn't work trying to change how people are (nor should it tbh, if someone is in a band for the fun of doing it then they shouldn't have to change their mindset because one member wants to be famous or vice versa if most members want to make a go of it they shouldn't be held back by one member who's happy playing the same home town venue to the same handful of people every gig) I'm sure finn did a video on this in the main channel, from what I remember the take away was to find people who have the same mindset as you and be in a band with them rather than trying to change the people you're with as it will just end in fall outs

    Great video! I think you cant remove the human element in most operations jobs. It is simpler to think of of the input/output model but getting buy in to make changes is also necessary. You can have great ideas but if you are always alienating stakeholders its going to be harder to make those tweaks. I'm a workforce analyst and as much as I am a SME I am spending more time developing and maintaining relationships with other analysts, managers and business owners.

    I tried learning code (Swift for iOS apps) and its A LOT harder than I was ever expecting. I’ve done a little bit of HTML stuff for websites for stuff I can’t do on like a Wix or Squarespace GUI, like inserting Google Analytics tracking and SEO stuff. Swift though is a whole new level. I had to come to the realization that I can’t do everything. Something I’ve refused to believe throughout a lot of my life is that I can’t do everything, and if I try I’ll be half-assed on everything and an expert in nothing. After a day of trying to code a watch app and failing miserably I’ve been at a crossroads or thinking whether it’s a pursuit that’s worth it to me, or should I just accept that this trade is worth understanding to a certain point, but being the expert of it could hinder my other pursuits too seriously. I think part of me stuck on “I want to do everything” but I know that’s not possible. Have you ever felt this way, and how did you deal with it if you have?
