The Legend Of Anne Bonny

- Anne Bonny was the name of one of the most famous pirates to ever live. She was one of the few female pirates at the time, and despite this, she rose to such a level of infamy, she was feared nearly as much as Blackbeard himself, but despite this all, nobody ever knows what happened to her....
Tonight, on the 300th anniversary of her trial, with the help of dozens of people, we are going to attempt to figure out the fate of this seafarer once and for all. This is The Legend Of Anne Bonny.

I just found this and I am a massive history buff. I don’t know why this discovery isn’t national news. The discovery of Anne outliving all her comrades his a rather large over sight to the historical record and her legacy. Thank you for all your hard work in bringing the truth to her legend.
This is absolutely the best coverage of this subject I have ever seen. It even contains original groundbreaking research. This really should be written up and published in a scholarly journal.
Guess what, it likely will be!!!
@@DebunkFile excellent, delighted to hear it.
It actually will be. I have no doubt it'll make it past peer review.
History Files has a good ring to it.
Came here after listening to the Anne Bonny album by Karliene, wanting to know a bit more about the pirate queen. Despite most of all being exaggerated rumors, I'm not disappointed. It was only expected, and i appreciate the video! Very interesting and informative
Glad you enjoyed!
Glad you liked it!
Same!!
same
I love learning about pirates especially the freedom they had from any responsibilities
A decent summary of the Golden Age, although many 'facts' about this period, as you later point out, originate in fictional works published shortly afterward. I liken the history of the Golden Age as a bit like the history of the American Wild West, so corrupted by popular media as to bear virtually no relationship with fact. And, as the author of a pirate novel (and a Western novella) I have mixed feelings about this. Novelists have always lifted the 'good' bits from history and embellished them. Pretty sure Homer did it, so there's a long tradition there. For historians, and for historical novel research, it's frustrating, confusing and not infrequently disappointing. You know the saying, "Why let the truth get in the way of a good story?" Thanks for the hard work of research. I'm sure you're likely correct about Ann's fate...or let's say, correct enough. (And yes, you can find my ebook on Amazon, in case you wondered.)
More people should watch debunk file. Everybody should stop watching clickbait youtubers and watch actually good content, like this.
I do appreciate a straightforward video title and no arbitrary red arrows or circles in the thumbnail. It takes principles to do it right. This video would have 7 million views if it was titled "You'll NEVER BELIEVE what this female pirate did!" With the thumbnail being a hot chick in a pirate costume who will never appear in the video and a spot in the background with a red circle around it for no reason.
especially since he found a credible source as to what happened to anne bonny
Who needs to sleep when Debunk File uploads?
Sleep is overrated!!!
@@LadyTylerBioRodriguez Thank you very much for helping with this masterpiece of a video!
@@pollall2793 I'm honored. But so many people helped. I do feel we made our Polybius or Silk Road.
I had a dream about tragic glory and crimes on the high seas last night. Women held their children and watched the British Empire fall. It could've been coincidence though.
@@mariaquiet6211 I'm into psychology probably not an accident.
Just discovered your channel with this video. I'm currently writing a thesis about Johnson's History of the Pyrates, and I am astonished by the precision of your essay! You're even avoiding frequent mistakes made by historians nowadays (Nathaniel Mist possibly being Johnson, almost nobody knows about this). Thank you so much for this work, would it be possible to quote you in some way? The documents you discovered can undoubtedly prove your hypothesis, and solve this 300 years old problem! Keep up the great work!
Absolutely! Go ahead and quote the video or the Post and Courier article this video was used in. Be my guest good sir!
Feel free to quote us my friend 💛💛
Seven sir. This video is now listed on Wikipedia. So we are pretty legit now.
No one cares
How did the thesis turn out?
so much work & research was put into this and by the end i was floored with how well you were able to not only solve the mystery but that you did so by digging through these super obscure documents. amazing job to everyone who took part in this video, all the work put into it is reflected in the quality :)
Thank you so, so much. Comments like this really have us emotional out here, we appreciate it so much 💛💛
This is the BEST documentary I've ever seen about Anne Bonny.
If everything you said about her was close to the truth, she really lived a hard, depressing life, but anyway, she was able to live her life the way she wanted. That's enough, I guess.
"And thus ended the story of Anne Bonny.... or was it?"
*vsauce music plays*
At some point, they should release a remaster5ed version, with vsauce actually involved, just for this!
Very interesting video, and developments about Anne. A minor correction is needed, though- Bellamy died before Rogers took over Nassau, not after- he was killed in a shipwreck off the coast of Massachusetts in 1717, while Rogers did not reach Nassau until 1718.
That is correct, April of 1717 in the Whydah sinking. That statement was meant to be more general that some pirates gave up and some didn't but I see what you mean.
I never usually comment on UA-cam but this video was just incredible. Really enjoyed hearing a story that I didn’t have much knowledge of in a coherent, well put together video. And the amount of research is just outstanding. Well done!
Glad you enjoyed it!
“Soon a king of the pirates emerged!”
Me: Monkey D. Luffy!!!
Excellent work you guys! This is HUGE if it pans out to actually be her. I'm a Caribbean content creator and I made mention of Tyler in a new video. Proud to hear about my country (the Bahamas) even from the pirate times lol
Well I am sending this to a historical journal to peer review. If it makes it, then yeah this is what happened.
This is sensational.
It very much is.
Another fantastic episode really enjoy these, big thanks to all involved, this must have been a big undertaking with all the research and script writing, to the actual video production and all presented brilliantly, Well done guys
Thank you so much again 💛💛
You know that story about her exposing her boob during battle? Yeah I know it's probably not true but I like to think of her getting the attention of her enemies, pulling her shirt open and then they fall back dramatically with an anime style nosebleed.
Gotta say this is one of the best videos I've seen on her. Awesome job!
I've been looking forwards to this.
If her genetics were from Lincolnshire, unlikely she was a red head, and she would've been going grey haired by the time she was nearing 30. A lot of Irish ended up in Lincolnshire though.
I had to guess based on genetic averages but its entirely possible.
I have a presentation on Anne Bonny and this will get me the A+ I need! Thank you
That's awesome! Absolutely take as much as you need and or want. Full permission.
sweet some how i missed this when you upped it...wish all your vids were this long
the research involved in this is astounding
Stay tuned for april, we have one of this length coming 💛
This might just be one of the best yt videos I've seen. Congratulations and keep it up.
Thank you so much! We definitely will
This channel is so underrated i can't
Excellent research, well presented. Thanks.
This was so captivating ✨ thank you for the hard work and research you put into this!
How is this channel so underrated. You deserve millions of views
It's so nice to see someone not being a jerk about people believing the legend of her. And the amount of work you put in, and naming books you used and referenced. Thank you for this video, and for all the fun little references and such. I love learning about the history of piracy, and Anne (as well as Jack and Mary) is one of the ones I've fixated on quite a bit over the years. It's nice to have such an informative video to show to people that covers every piece of information we have, true or not! Definitely going to sit my friends down and make them watch this with me.
Great video mate! We pirates are huge fans of seeking treasure which in this case was Ann Bonny's final fate. Based on the lack of church burial records or markers in Spanish Town she would have been buried in a paupers grave. That would the only explanation other than her body was claimed by someone and sent elsewhere. The interesting part is there is no "Pirate" after her name like Mary Read's. This suggests at the time of her death that those doing the recording were unaware of her past or she was no longer considered a pirate.
Either are possible. 12 years is a long time and people could have forgotten or not cared
awesome doco cant wait to see more. despite being a more fictitious/romanticised depiction of Anne, She was my favourite character in Black Sails. Highly recommend watching if you have not seen it already ☠⚔🏴☠
Very interesting and informative video. The best one I’ve seen on Anne Bonny by far.
Glad you enjoyed!
Great work!

I had to do some research on Anne bonny for my RP character in scum. Your video was perfect. Got all the info I need for the story. Great job on the research and video

That's some fine detective work, friend!
Fate Grand Order also has both Ann & Mary Reed in it, as summonable servants. Just finished your documentary, it was excellently well done. Cant believe you may have found the official documents of when she had died
Congratulations on your research discovery. Awesome video.
Thank you 💛💛
Great video. Love the content
Thanks we really appreciate it!
Excellent!

Anne Bonny first mentioned at 21.15
Minor correction, it was actually Captain James Misson that supposedly founded Libertalia. Henry Every was only said to have founded it in the game Uncharted 4.
Awesome! Im watching all your videos, your highly underrated but one day you'll get the fame i promise. I myself made it in youtube somehow so theres no way your well put videos wont. It will only take a bit of time and work.

So I was able to check the St. Catherine Parish records, and something came up:
There were two Ann Bonnys who could have been *The* Bonny in St. Catherine. One of them died in 1747, buried in a coffin with her husband on the 15th of March.
So there's a chance she actually got married and lived another 14 years after 1733.
What do you think? Have you seen it?
You are referring to the Ann Bonny married to Philip Bonny who are present on Jamaica since 1698 and had multiple daughters including a Mary, an Ann buried in I believe 1718, and a Sarah who is probably the reason behind a misspelling in a newspaper in 1721. No that's definitely not her, she was present from 1698 to her death roughly the same time as the husband.
The only Ann Bonny buried after 1720 in Jamaica with no connection to that Bonny family is the 1733 one.
@@LadyTylerBioRodriguez
Very good. Thanks!
nice work introducing fact and critical study into the utterly fantastical pirate asylum! I think Ann's disappearance best explained by death in childbirth Port Royal was a fever hole . Clinton Black was is an influential Jamaican scholar...the registers are great reading but are incomplete, damaged and have outrageous modern transcription errors.. I got the carib studies bug 20+ years ago. Nice to see you dig in an give it a good go!
Your videos are so good, they’re like crack. I can’t get enough

The Tale of Anne Bonny...
That was a 21 minute intro and I’m not even upset about that.
It's important to set the scene and historical context before going right into Anne Bonny.
One Piece fan jumping with references
Its kinda obvious Jewelery Bonny is One Pieces take on Anne.
Oda only uses the names of real pirates for his characters. Bonny from one piece do not represent the life of Anne Bonney at all.
YES 👏

Honestly, if theres anything i want to be remembered by, "violent lesbian sailor" is very tempting
Pretty sure at least Mary Read was a trans guy. Possibly both
"Violent Lesbian pirate", They, uh, know about Calico Jack, right?
Omg.
This is so awesome!
Just one thing: St. Giles is pronounced "Jiles", not "Guiles"
For that matter, both 'schooner' and 'celtic' are pronounced with hard Cs. Skooner and Keltic not 'shooner' and 'seltic'.

I argue that golden age of piracy was actually beginnings of 2000s, age of limewire, napster etc.

I was under the impression Black Bart was the name of a stage coach robber.
There was a stage coach bandit in California nicknamed Black Bart. And as the gentlemen noted, Bartholomew Roberts wasn't referred to as 'Black Bart' until long after his death. There are probably a lot of 'black' Barts, as alliteration is popular.
@@jackrice2770 none will surpass my chubby pet rat whom was named after the robber. Lol

Pirate time never ends.
Peg Brennan…so that’s why Kathy Reichs linked her in the virals series
Heute vor 300 Jahren,am 28.04.1721 starb Mary Read im Gefängnis in Jago de la Vega (heute Spanish Town) an hohen Fieber. "R.I.P. Mary ".
The name Bonny c1700 was widely known in Lancashire not Cork in Ireland. Lancashire Bonny's had come from Scotland in 1297 with William Wallace's raiding party when they invaded and held the west coast area around "Black Pool". By 1700's the Bonny family were established owners of land and hostels including the Gynn Inn a known hostelry and place of disrepute. James Bonny was born in Bispham Black Pool c1675 and died 1724. He was an Irish Sea coastal sailor with fish as the staple diet. Anne eloped with James Bonny and took his name. They probably sailed from Cork SW Ireland to the West Indies. Anne and James separated in 1719 after she fell for Calico Jack so James Bonny returned to Black Pool where the Bonny family set up hotels, alcohol bottling and ran public offices until 1966. 1719 Anne remained behind in the West Indies eloping with pirate John Rackham aka “Calico Jack” earning from her natural talents. Johnson's book published in 1724 would have used original contemporary information from key players including Anne and James Bonny. In those days reference sourcing was not standard practice. Omission of authenticated records does not indicate error. Anne's date of death is recorded in writing Dec 29 1733 in Spanish Town outside Kingston Jamaica thanks to youtube research
You should debunk the theory that Elizabeth I was secretly a man.
One question, there's any evidence about she had a relationship with Chikdley Bayard before she started her piracy career? Ty for you answer
Who? I don't think so.
I have a doubt, according to some sources, Anne Bonny dressed in men's clothes but not hiding her gender from the crew, while Mary Read did the opposite. Did both hide the gender or only Read did that? By the way, I'd like a place whether it's a website or a book with real information on pirates to study about the golden age of piracy, does anyone know of any?
Despite what Captain Johnson said in his book, Read and Bonny did not actually hide their gender from the crew. I know this because the proclamation issued by Governor Woodes Rogers demanding the capture of Rackham mentioned both women by name. If the authorities knew that they were women, there's no way the pirates didn't. Also, Johnson's account seems to suggest that Read joined the crew later after her ship was attacked by Rackham, and this is why the pirates didn't know she was a woman, but actually she was part of Rackham's crew when they ran away from Nassau.
Wait Anne never killed anyone? what about Mary Read and do you have evidence or did i miss it in the video?
Please reply i would love to know since they are two of my favorite people in history.
Wish we could prove Ann said "I am sorry to see you here, but if you had fought like a man, you needn't be hanged like a dog".
The court document states none of the pirates killed anyone. Just robbed, closest was Dorothy Thomas, Anne and Mary wanted to kill her but it never happened. Pirates could be cruel but they weren't always murderers, that was bad for business. Hell Blackbeard never was reported as killing anyone until his final battle with Maynard.
@@FeiXenogears I really wish we could prove that quote. Its so good.
@@LadyTylerBioRodriguez If the court document is correct, then I feel bad for Rackham and his crew who were all hanged. Yes, they were pirates, but did they really deserve to die?
Off the top of head how many truely succesful pirates do you know of. For me it is only 2 Henry every and Zheng Yi Sao(commonly known as "the bloody rose of china"). Henry every retired after a damn good take and Zheng Yi Sao was given amnesty in exchange for her promise not to take up piracy again
Richard Taylor. In the video I called him John Taylor which is a common mistake I realize now. Big heist with the Nosa Senora Do Cabo, sails to Portugal and is given a pardon, joins there navy, and is lasted noted to be running a plantation. That's probably the ultimate successful pirate. Henry Morgan of course I'd count too, man became lieutenant governor of a colony.
I have my own theory after listening to this what if like in the game she was rescued and the governor of Jamaica was scared he would lose his position so he had all documents destroyed and had the documents in the video forged so it looked like she was given freedom
Yeah let's pander and exaggerate. ...........it's the right time of era!😂
Yeah I’m sorry but I gotta say it, I don’t think Margot Robbie would be a good Anne Bonny because I just don’t think she fits into that role like yeah she’s a good actress but I really don’t see her as Anne Bonny.
I wonder if Fulford was her real last name? I’m related to some with the same last name. And its in my area lol Blackbeards area anyways bath lol. Jesus Radcliffe lmao and they seem sus lmao.
Isn't she the one who claimed she was pregnant to avoid being hung with the rest of the pirates, and then desperatly tried to sleep with her captors to get a real pregnancy?
Did you not watch the fucking video
Any death grips fan here?
