@t0dd000, you must be new to this channel (as must be the repliers). Carrie is a fountain pen reviewer, and her audience has frequently suggested to her to try TWISBI, to which she has acquiesced. That is the nature of being a reviewer. Now, if you don’t understand the basics of a reviewer channel, maybe you should peddle your spittle elsewhere.

Oh, i do love a good Montblanc! Expensive, yes, but hey! You love what you love. I have a Mozart edition fountain that i use as my pocket pen and it's fantastic! It has a metal body unlike many of their other pens. Luckily i managed to pick it up in a pawn shop which saved me many, many dollars 😅

I feel like there are a few exceptions like Nakaya where a person made the fountain pen themself, or any urushi where the technique is difficult and uses a scarce resource, where a very high price tag makes sense. I can even kind of see it where there's a very good warranty (Aurora). Montblanc is worth it to the people it's worth it to, and I am not one of them. I feel like if someone wants a wealth signifying desk ornament, Pelikan is RIGHT THERE.
Things I'm done with are in broader categories than yours, rather than individual pen models.
-I'm done with Jinhao because it's 50/50 you get a good one and if you do, it's not very durable. I like my stuff to last.
-I'm done with fine and extra fine nibs. It's not worth it, I don't like them well enough to have more than I already do.
-I'm done with pocket pens because they actually stress me out. That you barely know they're there is a problem to me, I'm like OH NO WHERE'S MY PEN but it's right there. My current "pocket pen" is a Benu Astrogem. I KNOW where that thing is.
-Done with Jowo nibs. I don't like their feedback, Schmidt feels much better to me. No shade- lot of people like them, but if there's a pen I can't resist that has one, first thing I'm doing is swapping that out for a Kaigelu.
-And I'm done with metal pens. Too heavy. I just get such fatigue from using them so I'll pass.
I know a lot of people will disagree with all of that and they should! We should each use what works for us. It's all good.

I need to discipline myself to stop buying pens just because I think they are pretty! I currently have about 15 pens, and I have to say that surprisingly, the favorite I keep coming back to is the Pilot Prera. (I have three.) Such an unassuming little pocket pen, but posted, it fits perfectly in my hand and is without a doubt the smoothest, most comfortable and consistent writer I have. And for all of my love of pretty pens, the Prera is certainly nothing exciting. But its functionality, as far as I'm concerned, is the best!

Thank you so much for your perspective! I have only been in this hobby for a year, so I don't have much experience with the pens I have to have an opinion on what I would never buy again. There are some pens in my collection I have regretted buying, but I really need to give them more attention to really know if I am gonna sell them. And thanks for re-recording this... I tend to always forget to charge up my electronics so I completely empathize! 💜

  • @ChristopherMay
    @ChristopherMay День тому +3

It's good that you're in tune with what you do and don't like and I feel like that's more accepted in the fountain pen community than in other hobbies I pursue. I for instance love (LOVE!) my Diamond Mini. It's a tiny little pocket ink tank that feels really nice in my hand when posted. The E95s and various Sports are delightful but are limited to cartridges or converters that are paragons of OK-ness. However, I've never been burned by TWSBI's cracking issue (as I knock repeatedly on my desk hoping that particle board qualifies as wood) and completely understand why that would turn someone off to TWSBI's in general and Minis in particular. And I feel like a fairly large majority of the pen nerd world is similarly accepting of differing view points.
Calling out Montblanc like you did might ruffle a few feathers but I can guarantee that it would be far worse in another hobby. Leica is roughly equivalent to Montblanc in the camera world. Same German engineering, same extreme special editions, same stratospheric pricing. I've been in photography fora where posters were called out, not for saying something negative but for simply not being effusive enough with their praise for all things Leica. If one does dare hazard to say something negative, one had best be prepared for a holy way because Leica is more of a religion than a camera brand (I can't resist, though, so I'll say that I'll take my Nikkor-H 5cm f2 over a first gen 50mm Summicron any day of the week. The horror!)
As for me, I'll never buy another Monteverde Ritma. The worst ergonomics in a pen, ever. (Well, the Majohn V1 might be worse but there's zero chance I buy one to verify that.) The only saving grace for the Ritma is the magnetic cap which is pretty cool but not cool enough to overlook the horrid handling of the thing. That's about the only one that I can list as a definite "never again" kind of thing, though.
Thanks for taking the time to do a double recording. Interesting video and it's always nice to hear differing perspectives!

Here are my no buys: anything from Fountain Pen Revolution (poor quality), the Kaweco Sport AL (prefer the plastic models), a Pineider (nibs too smooth for me), Gravitas pens (long story, but for one thing that metallic sound when you open or post them makes my teeth hurt), and the Diplomat Aero (but I love the Diplomat Excellence A2, which has the same amazing nib). You mentioned the TWSBI Mini. I have three Diamond Minis and none have cracked. I enjoy using them. But the most recent one I got has a stib nib and I agree, it is not good.

    • @sajjadhusain4146
      @sajjadhusain4146 20 годин тому

Very surprised to hear that you actually prefer the plastic Sport to the AL Sport. I’ve given up on buying any more Sport ever again. Don’t like them anymore. I only have the red AC Sport which I love and will always keep.
I remember that you and I share a great fondness for the Diplomat Excellence A2. I own two. The only Diplomat pens I ever cared about enough to want to to buy. Glad I did.
I had 3-4 TWSBIs a few years ago. Never had any cracking or material QC issues. But I realised that I disliked the nibs. And likely the feeds were also to blame. Overly stiff nibs, poor feeds, flow issues, felt like much too dry writers and downright underwhelming and annoying.
Luckily, I’ve steered clear of FPR after seeing many poor reviews of their pens.
Pineider just fail to move me with their pretentious, unappealing designs. And the nibs are weird, too.

Thanks, Carrie. I haven't bought any of the pens on your list. And I would hate to spend that much money on a Montblanc pen for the fear that I might like my Jinhao X159 better. I also wouldn't buy a vanishing point pen because I don't like the design.
I'm also too new to fountain pens to have a top 5 list of pens I would never buy again.

I will not get a Vanishing Point die to the clip position. It forces me to grip the pen that is uncomfortable for me. I do have the MaJohn A1 with a roll stop instead of a clip and it works wonderfully. Incidentally you can swap the A1 nib and feed assembly for a Vanishing Point very easily.
I also dislike the Lamy Safari for the same reason; it forces me to hold the pen in an uncomfortable position. I went with a Jinhao 80 and use a Lamy nib.
As for Montblanc I can't afford it. I understand the nibs are excellent, though and would consider a used version of a 149.

Interesting! I have a 20th century Namiki vanishing point as well as a last year Pilot vanishing point, and have really enjoyed them -- but I carry my Majohn A-1 far more often. ... I've never felt the need to pay for a Mont Blanc, especially since my far less expensive Wing Sung (Yongsheng? Junlai?) 630 with a 14k nib scratches that itch for waaaayy less.

  • @soyouwannamokatiki

I don't get twsbi's any more, I just am not into demo pens and am not a fan for the aesthetics. I am torn on pelikan's right now; love the nibs but the m600's seemed to crack and were too small. I think i would love a m800 or m1000, but i'm worried about the cracking, and the "normal" ones are boring to me so i have not pulled the trigger as of yet. I have bought my first montblanc this year, for 50%off (a lagrand/146) and so far really like it, but as a visually driven collector very few appeal to me which is probably good!

Hello, thank you for the video today. I am new to fountain pens, and honestly anything better than a basic bic. Not so proud, lol, but it is what it is. I would just like to ask if you had a specific recomendation for purchasing the Jinhao x159? I know it is not an expensive purchase, but I would just like to try and purchase from a trusted vendor. I see them available on amazon, but would only like to order from them if it is recommended or my only option.
I have two Lamy Safaris that I have recently purchased and love. I am excited to start a collection though, lol. I listened to your advice and have taken note on a few points that you discussed. I think I will also try a Pilot Metropolitan when I purchase the x159 as well. Thanks again, from a new subscriber.

I haven't tried a lot of different nib sizes with TWSBI. My first Eco was a fine nib, and I would agree it's pretty dry. But I've bought three more TWSBIs since, all broad nibs, broads are my preference, and I find them to be quite wet.

I’ve long sworn off buying crappy Monteverde and (modern) Conklin pens ever again. Awful QC, nib/feed issues out of the box. Beyond infuriating.
Ditto any Chinese pens (mainly for the boring, pedestrian nibs). No Indian-made pens.
No Kaweco Sport (I only have the red carbon-fiber AC Sport). Never buying TWSBI again. Gave away the three I once owned.
Also, there are pens I’ve never bought and never will because, despite their popularity, I really dislike one or more things about them which prevented me from buying the pens in the first place. These include the Lamy Safari, Diplomat Magnum/Aero, Pilot Metropolitan/Kakuno, any pen by Pineider, or any modern Parker, Sheaffer or Cross pens.
