I had a mate in school fifty years ago that had a whole floor in his parents house and one wing of that floor was covered in Scalextric track and he had piles of spare track and over fifty cars. I spent a weekend playing with that set up and was hooked but I didn't have the resources to replicate his track. His Dad was an oil Industry Executive from Houston working out of Aberdeen in the early days when money was no object not like it is these days where people are being laid off. I do remember the one car that stood out to me apart from the early Ford rally cars was a Black JPS Lotus F1 car.
@@johnbrown3951 Yes it was a fabulous looking car. I had posters all over my bedroom and later as an apprentice engineer for a rally race company I got to meet Colin Chapman at my workbench. Happy memories.
Currently own a F pace SVR. Mice chewed the insulation in the engine bay and the insulation on the rubber hose that comes from the air boxes. I have started to put peppermint oil drops on the make up removal pads that women use and place these around the engine bay. I also put a few drops in water and spray it around the perimeter of the car in the evening. So far it has kept them away.
Hi Peter. Soy based insulation has been used in cars for nearly 25 years now. In fact, a manufacturer that doesn't use it would be pretty rare. The brands that are more 'nibbled'\snacked on must use a slightly 'tastier' formula for the insulation. It sounds as though Ford fit this category. There is even an anti-rodent electrical tape. Honda doesn't\didn't admit its wiring was extra tasty, but they do sell "Honda Rodent Tape" to help protect extra vulnerable areas of the wiring. It uses a spicy capsaicin formula, but it is (very) pricey. It does work though.
Before I retired I worked at a fleet compound and we had an issue with rodents eating away insulation , it was quite prevalent and costly , I now tend to watch where I park if leaving my car for some time
We have an old 2000 Audi A2 and a. Few years ago it ground to a halt and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. The perpetrator was a rat which was living in a void under the passenger footwell and was dining out on some electronics that were located there. Rodents are a big problem on tractors and self- propelled machinery. Repair costs and downtime can be a real headache.
New build looking good Pete, as with all new build with painted plaster there is a lot of reverberation bouncing of then walls and ceilings on the audio but hopefully when you have more things to absorb the sound this will improve.
As I've mentioned before I am an electrician & I have seen many many instances of rodent damage to wiring over the years with pvc insulation! They also love pipe insulation which makes great nests! Not sure why foxes would go for wiring on a van but is the new loom made from the same material Pete? Lovely place Lyon hope you enjoyed it (or did you go to Clermont?)
Have a Vw T6.1 transporter that’s had the wiring targeted by foxes 4 times chewing the wiring to sensors on exhaust. Vw would not cover under warranty. At the time the van was only 6 months old. Local VW garage told us to wrap the exhaust with chicken wire? That’s what other customers have done.
Think your video on the TWR was way better then the Top Gear's take. Love your approach. Just saw the Friday video so the Land Cruiser will probably be for next week. Funny to see on the pictures that it's a Belgian car. I'm a big Land Cruiser fan but the new one is way out of reach starting at 80K Euros here. Such a shame!
Hi Ped Your latest MW180 very topical in our household.😥 Took my twin axle caravan in for annual service this week, no faults to report so hoping for quick turnaround. Yesterday received a call from my dealer advising when completing electrical check fault code indicating no power to the boiler. Mouse had chewed through main feed wire between the internal wall panel and outer skin of the van. No sign of the culprit or how he got access. Now awaiting bigger bill than anticipated😬
I have heard of a new farm machine that had it's wiring eaten while stored in a barn recently. Sounds like it may because a regular issue 😢. I also read a report that thousands of ford trucks parked at the Kentucky speedway (due to a chip shortage) had their wiring eaten! Abother reason to keep hold of older cars.
Wife's Evoque was not used for a couple months, rodents got in chomped on wiring, total cost to repair £7500, unbelievably her insurance company covered most of the bill
A few lads I work with all with the same brand of car had issues with wires been chewed and also the foam type installation been chewed too all by rats. There digital dash screens all went off when it happened.
Not sure if this is the same as me but also had a wire under my 2018 Fiesta ST chewed through. Something to do with the exhaust sensor. Went to ford, as still under warranty, but because i has done some slight modifications (bonnet struts ) they wouldnt repair under warranty. I wonder if they new about this problem. (Unless this is a new thing within last few years)
Hi Peter my truck at work had the abs wiring eaten, lit up my dashboard like a Christmas 🎄, lorry was off the road for a week, ive also heard of lots of t6.1 transporters getting wiring looms eaten and my other van a Renault traffic had its catalytic convertor wiring eaten. I believe there is something you can spray under the van that keeps the rodents and foxes away from the van . Apparently weeing on your drive way helps lol
I thought rodents enjoyed chewing the plastic insulation, too. That's not to say they don't prefer a bit of soya! I stayed on a campsite in France about 30 years ago that was over run with mice, and several cars had to be repatriated on tow trucks due to the mice chewing the wiring in the engine bays.🙄
Late in the summer had US$12k rodent damage to my '22 Clubman JCW... massive two month battle with MINI and my insurance company (had to get a lawyer involved)... should note that the rodents in question had no interest in my grandfather's 2000 Ford Ranger parked right next to it...
I’ve recently learnt through an unfortunate experience that the anti-stick coatings used in plastic pipe production (the butter lining the cake tin so to speak) are sweetly attractive to rodents. This applies to pipes in cars and in homes (eg., dishwasher water inlet pipe). Suggestion is to wash them with white spirit before installation which suggests rinsing new pipes under the bonnet may be a deterrent also.
Mate, I'm Welsh but live in Colorado. I work in industrial comms and I can tell you two things....every comms shack I've been into here is full of rodents, and my beater was "infiltrated" while it sat with a blown motor for a few years in my attached garage. They had nests in the headliner! Fast forward 6yrs and I've got a "bouncer counter" to keep track of how many I catch each year 😮 28 in 2024 😢
@philtucker1224 I'm no rodent expert, but I catch quite a lot each year. We have lots of raptors and snakes that eat rodents and there are tons of them here too. Mice are gross and the deer mouse can carry hantavirus. Not a nice thing at all 😵
Soya cables. I first saw this covered by an American mechanic; he wasn’t sure what a powder was covering an engine bay. It turned out to be chilli powder to deter rodents eating the wire insulation.
Good to see the MW180 back and cool scalextric track set Pete !! Love the new office !! Looking forward to the Toyota Landcruiser review !! Celica coming back ??? Rumour has it !!
Yeah, I have a lot of experience. Squirrels like Renault's. Foxes like Korean wiring. Had a Hyundai Tucson where a fox had eaten his DPF sensor wiring, he replaced it at Hyundai £700, got the car home and it ate it again.
Scalextric wow seriously you need to do some camera 📷 footage with that pete!!👌🏻👍🏻 From the age of about 9 i had a Scalextric & still love it today & boy like you say has it moved on!!😃👌🏻👍🏻 All the best Dave 👍🏻
My vw T5 transporter loom got eaten by rodents in 2017. VW refused under warranty. I fixed it by picking up a handful of castrol grease and wiped it all over the loom coating it in a thin layer. Never had as problem again.
Nice to see that the MW180 is now back again !!,, Just see your bit about rodent eats the wiring in your car !!. Will you be looking into this any more ?
My Dad had his Toyota Rav 4 wiring damaged twice at a cost of $2700 Here in Canada you can now buy a product called Honda tape, I believe it was developed by Honda. I've read it has some sort of chilli pepper base in it that is unpleasant to animals so you wrap your wiring with it and it's supposed to deter them from chewing it. Time will tell as he has now wrapped all his engine wiring.
We get so many Range Rovers with rodent damage, doesn’t matter if you live on a farm or parked on the street they get in there and have a good old nibble
Last winter I suffered three rodent attacks. Two on a 2005 Jeep so probably not soya. It was not the wiring but the fuel line (diesel). The third instance was a 2021 Toyota Hybrid. Again the fuel line but petrol this time. The Toyota was the most expensive even though it was on top of the engine and at the front. Dealer repair to maintain warranty v a small local garage that repaired the Jeep.
My Kia had some wiring nibbled by a rat. I took it to main dealer who said that it would need an entire new wiring loom... and my insurer said that six year old car was a right-off. I took the car to an independent garage who fixed the wiring for £60 and found a hose that was also nibbled but had not been spotted... another £40 pounds. No problems after. Apparently a bigger problem in the USA with their different wildlife. I believe US animals were happy with the plastic too? Surely products could be used to put the wildlife off. I know that electronic devices are commonly used in US but seems excessively complicated?
I had an SD1 2600 and mice got into the side panel next to the accelerator (gas) pedal and chewed through cables which took out my windows and interior lights. Same car and I found a dried out mouse stuck to the heater radiator grill behind the dashboard.
I'm all for being 'Green' so long as it's not just green washing that in reality is less green. M&S used to (and might still) use recycled paper in their printers because it in theory was greener. They didn't take into account the multiple fault callouts it caused because the paper was garbage and caused the printers to jam constantly. We had hundreds of fault calls where spare parts and whole printers were shipped every time plus the diesel we used getting to and from the shops. If the wasted O2 was counted the recycled paper was likely vastly more environmentally dirty than normal paper. How many Fords need to be recabled before the change to 'greener' materials is in fact dirtier.
🤔. EVs with soya based wire/cable covering.....that'll be interesting! I must admit the looks of the Supercat didn't float my boat, I found it too busy...I thought the test mule had more potential aesthetically. Each to their own though. Anyway, when are you sending out invites for a Scalextric race meeting? 🏎️ 😊
A good friend had his 6 month old Range Rover written off by mice chewing through the loom. After a bit of argy bargy, he got a new one out of them. It’s a big problem and I put traps in my garages.
At least Max had to work for this title. I've a little more respect for him. Hopefully McLaren Ferrari and Mercedes will be in the mix with Red Bull in 2025. On an unrelated subject, what is your experience of LED lights in the fog. My halogens were unable to penetrate a real pea souper last night.
I was worried that my local foxes might start munching on my EV charger cable. My friend, who runs a pest control business, suggested using Scoot fox repellent or white vinegar.
IF this wiring thing is going to be an issue going forward, could they not spray coat it in some horrible tasting liquid i.e anti nail biting liquid you used to get when i was a kid?....infact should they not do that to all wiring etc anyway to eliminate this issue full stop, finally M.V x3 LOL love it
Yep, the rodents got to my London Taxi twice last year, power steering fluid cable....£1700. I now have mouse traps set up in the engine bay, it's an electric vehicle so assume the rodents are attracted by the warmth from the overnight charging? BTW caught 2 mice..😂

Argghhh!! So Max V is World Champion again…but I still don’t like him…that takes more than being fast and successful which wins you the gongs but not the respect I still rate Fangio above all others. I saw the new LC in St Mawes in October…huge but surprisingly basic and dull to look at….teliability is not everything! Enough…now I have to dream about mice!😰😰😰😩😩😩Richard😃😃😃😃

Always use an ultrasonic rodent repeller (i had some brake and fuel lines eaten a few years ago)

Best wishes and some algo food. 🙂
Without blowing any smoke, yours was the best XJS vid! well structured and easy to follow.
wasn't the best XJS though. Outside amazing, interior awful
When I had my Elise a mouse chewed the plastic pipe for the windscreen washers which was a nuisance

TV work next come on
I’m not sure who Ped works for ( someone said he’s a music producer?) but he certainly must earn a good wedge to afford all that travelling!
Is this a joke or what ???
I work for myself as an automotive content creator. The trips are funded by the brands organising them 🤷♂️
@ nice. Keep up the good work buddy! 😁👍
Evening Peddlers
They should make cable insulation out of Twiglets. Nothing on earth would eat that.

Hi
When are you having a garage warming party??
Haven't watched the vid yet, but I'm guessing it's the soy insulation around the wiring. Had a very hungry rodent eat half the wiring loom in my F-Type last year, so I talk from a very expensive experience!
Soya wiring on an EV! Fried mice?
So they’re reducing the amount of plastic in wiring, but replacing leather upholstery with synthetic (plastic based) upholstery materials. 🤔
Not forgetting all the plastic trimmed wheel arches etc.
To be fair, a lot of those use recycled plastic. Maybe they should make wiring looms from recycled plastic too.
@ Unless there’s a commitment to recycle it again afterwards it’s still plastic going into landfill at the end of the car’s life.
@ I agree about the wiring looms though.
Soy based insulation isn't that new Pete....
I had my wiring loom eaten by mice 🤬🤬🤬
In my Alpina . Cost a tow truck and £300 to be fixed
😊
VW Transporters 6.1s are liked by rodents too it seems!
Evening all…. Do we sell our daily? Our Faguar LGBTQ Type?😂
