The actual stage theme has a bunch more to it, and loads of people have no idea. Bad Apple itself was likely lifted into popularity by that fantastic black/white music video. It got so popular that even main stream news took note of it (and proceeded to embarrass themselves like most times the internet leaks into real life).

Touhou is fascinating and baffling to me. So many people who are into it don't care about or play the games (which are hard as hell) but that doesn't really matter because so much of the fandom is just making stuff around these characters. It's kind of amazing. People take these badly drawn little characters with generic personalities and turn them into detailed characters with a sort of "fanon" around them.
I think it's interesting how ZUN's drawings look so sloppy, but when you add drawing talent, the character designs are actually gorgeous. It's like he can see the characters in his head but can't draw them.
They don't have 'generic' personalities. If they did I wouldn't even care about the franchise. There are simple characters like Rumia or Wriggle, but even then they're simple in a charming way. And then you have the more interesting ones like Yukari, Koishi, Kokoro, Seiga, Junko, etc. They're all a lot of fun to think about though, which is why Touhou is still so beloved.

I'm honestly surprised that this game genre isn't anywhere near as popular in the west. The games are really, really fun, even if you only play something like 2hu, despite there being so many more games you could get on steam if you wanted to try more.

A lot more well-informed than some of the other Touhou features I have seen, although there were not references to the more quality fanwork such as Adventures of Scarlet Curiosity... then there is the fact that a lot of the actual lore content is centered around the manga and print works. The fanmusic can actually get pretty amazing, as there is actually a Touhou Orchestra and everything. I think it is more than just the games that got it to this point. The music and lore has helped with the expandability of the series overall.

I cannot tell you how excited I was to see you guys going over touhou! As a fan of more so the music and characters than the actual game play (i suck at it) there is A LOT of stuff that has a touhou version of it. classical music? touhou version. Prog rock? touhou version. Folk, EDM, Gabber, Pop? Touhou version. there are even legit (fan made) 10-15 min. animated episodes based off of the games! and fun fact, Undertale's Mettaton's bullet patterns were based off of Marisa Kirisame who is the chick in the thumbnail (Co protagonist). a lot of the characters are hilariously OP outside of Dankmaku rules (one has the ability to manipulate all "boundaries" physical or otherwise), but the charm of the music, storyline and game play makes them all interesting. did I also mention there is about 40+female characters and only 3 males? 2 aren't human.
Congratulations for your subscriber count! It's quite fantastic that Touhou was the herald topic for your 200,000 special video. You have done a fantastic amount of research and coverage that really capitalized on the parts of Touhou that are truly impressive, these were great highlights. It touched only the surface of some of the fan produced content, but I'm glad you did that because I hope that encourages more people to give it a fair chance and see the content for themselves. I've been a fan of Touhou for seven years and have never once gotten tired of this series. Also, never before have I seen a coverage of Touhou that was as in-depth and well put together as this. You have my thanks for that. My only grip is that you didn't mention the fighting games, but otherwise this was really nicely done! If I might add some additional input, there difficulty settings in the regular Touhou game that actually make it okay for new people to jump in the series, considering almost everyone saw gameplay footage of the hardest difficulty appropriately named "Lunatic Mode", I see a lot of people getting discouraged from playing the games. Moreover, the four difficulties are: Easy, Normal, Hard, and the aforementioned Lunatic. For anyone who is even remotely new they should go for Easy mode, because I've seen to many people jump to Normal based on the presumption from there other gaming experience that easy is to easy. But to a new player, this is what it actually is: Easy is Hard. Normal is really freaking hard. Hard is tearing your hair out hard. Lunatic is... actually quite a fitting name. If anyone would like to jump in to the Touhou games, I'd recommend three games: _Touhou 4 Lotus Land Story_ - You will need to find an emulator for this and the other 5 games in the era, but this game is one that is very friendly and very easy. The bullet patterns are very simple and easy and the game rewards you with a screen-clearing bomb after you beat a stage. It's also very easy to gain 1-up, so I'd use this as a nice starting point into Touhou. _Touhou 7 Perfect Cherry Blossom_ - It's one of the more classic Touhou games with some really nice challenges but reigns to be a good game to start training and honing your skills at Touhou. Admittedly it's follow in the main series, Touhou 8 Imperishable Night, is a lot easier and extremely fun, but it's got mechanics that encourages using habits and play-styles that deviate from the rest of the main games. _Touhou 14 Double Dealing Character_ - This is one that has mechanics and a good amount of variety that it's one I really have to recommend jumping into as gives a good idea of what modern Touhou games today are like. This one is fairly challenging, but I encourage it because it's the game where you can learn a lot of tricks to do good. That's that, bare in mind this would be my own personal recommendation in order of priority for people yet unfamiliar with Touhou. Apologizes for the lengthy comment, but I figured it's the least I could do for a video that just did so many things right. ^^
+TheDoctor64 You are likely to last several stages if you play on easy difficulty. Mind you, for a new player easy is still challenging, and it will take you some practice to beat the game. The "die at the first second" difficulties are for people who have been fans of the series for years and seek challenge.
I've been a Touhou fan for more than a decade now but, surprisingly, it was this video that made me realize why I love the series so much. Like he said, "it's organic". I realized that it was not the series, per se, that I adored, but rather the "living breathing" world kept alive by thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of people who all share the same passion.
Nice! Genuine research, background insight, proper editing, correct clip usage, correct referencing and elaboration on the diversity of fanbase medium and culture in a respectfully neutral format. I think many youtubers could stand to learn from you as example. Great work. All this plus you credited video source material. I'm astounded.
I actually have a friend that is obsessed with Touhou. I haven't played any of the games (she's played like half) but I have done a lot of research about Touhou and the bullet hell genre. Succeeding in bullet hell games is mainly a combination of absolute focus, memorization, quick reflexes and small movements. All of which I lack...(~_~;)
Raccoon Child Wow PoFV?? That's One of The games that i really suck at (at least did The 1cc)...but overall that's really impressive having in Count that you don't have specific patterns in that game, just a bunch of random bullets trown at you... You have my respect 😁😍
Touhou for the music - Syrufit, Shibayan, Alstroemeria, Zytokine, ENS, Demetori, FELT and so many many many more talented groups. Highly suggest finding subbed songs and reading the lyrics, singing about an imaginary culture creates a piece unlike anything youve ever seen most likely. Touhou for the fanfics - I read a lot of western comics and ofc mangas; official ones from the big names like One Piece and Berserk. Yet, a lot of Touhou short stories either had me in tears of laughter or other time sadness. Thank you Zun for creating the ground work enabling people to write so many interesting stories. Touhou for the fan games - Most are old school and its the genre I like. Labyrinth of Touhou for RPGs, MegaMarisa, Genius of Sapheiros, TouhouVania. All enjoyable on days you have nothing better to do. Touhou for simply Zun - How can you be such a creatife mofo in so many areas. Those unique character and song titles. Those elegant character back story often taking from eastern culture with an original twist( expressive poker face that shows emotion through mask and goes berserk when she loses her mask of hope? wow) And finally ...inb4 touhou for the yuri
I've been wanting you to go over this for a long time. I'm so glad you did, I love this series and its characters and its godlike music with the whole community surrounding just remixing them.
+ryolo132 Don't forget Necrofantasia. And Septette for the Dead Princess. And Reach for the Moon. And Love-colored Master Spark. And Sleeping Terror. And...
Touhou is an insane cultural octopus of the digital age. Sure, my boomer mom might not know anything to do with Touhou, but there's probably no one my age that wouldn't recognize at least one thing from it. I thought my first introduction was Cristina Vee's English cover of Bad Apple (many people's introduction) but when I saw the characters, I recognized them as character models I had seen in GMod and downloaded because I thought they were just cute anime girls. But no, my TRUE first introduction to Touhou was that fucking Ronald McDonald youtube poop.
Touhou gets so little attention within America sometimes, or is only seen for Touhou 6. I'm glad that this video was done since it is such a great series of games with an even greater (yet annoying) fanbase! Btw Orin is best 2hu
I hate it when people not in the shmup community try to discuss bullet hell. They always get the facts wrong and try to make it seem more inaccessible than it actually is. The games are about memorization and execution, just like any other skill-based game.
+DogeOf Illuminati To be fair, the video did make the games in the genre in general seem harder than they actually are. Are they hard? Typically, yea, but it came across that anybody who is not of Japanese origin with the natural ability to game at the level of a god would fail before they even pressed start. It could possibly make somebody curious about these games not even bother, thinking the difficulty is beyond them.
Sam, you are one of the most interesting to listen to, thoughtful, and insightful hosts of almost any show that I know of on this site. I have learned about so many cool things and things that relate to those things, all because of you. Congrats on passing the 200 grand mark, because you sure as hell deserve it.
I wish Touhou Project had more fan in the West! But this is comming in... We are becoming one of the greatest family in the world! But thnk you thank yooooooouuuuuu thank youuuuu to have made one of the rare video explaining what Touhou is on UA-cam. ~
I don't really know why watching this video made me cry, it might be because it's been a long time since I've actually PLAYED touhou rather than just ranting about it online and so I'm nostalgic or something, but y'know, thank you uvu;
I first experienced Touhou when Smooth Mcgroove did the acapella version of "U.N. Owen Was Her". I freaking loved the song so much that I went to investigate the source material. I ended up playing the games and I was hooked. The music, the characters, the humor, the difficulty, and the fan-base, everything about it is just so, dang, good.
Hey, no bad-mouthing Spacewar!/Space Wars/Orbit. The Cinematronics arcade version (my personal favorite), when played with a good friend, is one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences one can have. A simple, but challenging duel in space, with clicky buttons that felt great to use, and lots of game variations.
something that is similar to the touhou community is vocaloids but that was created by a company and some companies tried to create something like the touhou fanbase like Kancolle and Touken Ranbu
Touhou has always interested me, but the moment I look I game play of it, I instintly put away all thoughts of ever playing these games, as that looks completely impossible.
Lunatic and Hard are the only modes that are difficult. (Hard being arcade difficulty.) Normal is very much doable and Easy is too easy. The hitboxes of every sprite are much smaller than they look and are usually near the center.
+Jonah J They're really not as difficult as they seem, they just look imposing but they're mostly just about pattern recognition and muscle memory. It would be entirely possible to play with your eyes closed, it would just take a shitload of practice before hand.
+Jonah J Don't get me wrong, you'll get whooped a lot at first, but your skills will improve quickly if you keep at it. It's really helpful if you find a veteran who can guide you through some of the basic strategies (streaming, juking, PoC, etc.)
I'm very glad to see "This Exists" will talk about a topic related to a particular Bullet Hell game named Touhou. Didn't even imagined that he will do this. Still a nice video. Keep it up.

+Kilanna Do you know how big the torrent of all touhou music is?
Last time i checked it was at about 1.2 TB
+Kilanna More like over 160 characters...
+Karpfador true, (I looked it up to see if you're right, didn't even know they data mined the whole thing!) but for what it is that's a lot of songs!
+Kilanna There are male touhou characters?
Rory Walker two or three :D
This Touhou game looks kinda ok.
Romantique Tp Love your MIDI fixes, m8.

*I knew this day would come!*
Congrats DUDE ON THE 200K, Love *This Exists!!*
But to a new player, this is what it actually is:
Easy is Hard.
Normal is really freaking hard.
Hard is tearing your hair out hard.
Lunatic is... actually quite a fitting name.
If anyone would like to jump in to the Touhou games, I'd recommend three games:
_Touhou 4 Lotus Land Story_ - You will need to find an emulator for this and the other 5 games in the era, but this game is one that is very friendly and very easy.
DeityDiz93 woah damn man,,, your details is too many O.O
Synchronized hand movements with 2 hands moving moving up and down is so retro 1990 hiphopstyle
I would die at the first second on Touhou
Unless u play easy or regular and not linatic showed in the video
Lunatic
+TheDoctor64 You are likely to last several stages if you play on easy difficulty. Mind you, for a new player easy is still challenging, and it will take you some practice to beat the game.
The "die at the first second" difficulties are for people who have been fans of the series for years and seek challenge.
+TheDoctor64 You cant die in the first second because no bullets have spawned then :P
+Dissentient I'd like to try Touhou, but my left key is broken...
Touhou is gaining exposure! OMG
+HTFCirno2000 This wasn't planned!!
+HTFCirno2000 I get strangely giddy whenever I see Touhou in places I don't expect..

Bad Apple
I actually found this channel because I was listening to some black midi and found your black midi episode.
I'm the same as you, but I love playing Touhou. I just can't go beyond stage 4 in any of the games except for PoFV. I'm talking Normal Mode.
Those elegant character back story often taking from eastern culture with an original twist( expressive poker face that shows emotion through mask and goes berserk when she loses her mask of hope? wow)
And finally
...inb4 touhou for the yuri
Undertale fans: *heart attack* Touhou fans: *PFFT.* This is easy-peasy-grate-some-cheesey. (Lest it be Lunatic Difficulty.)
Finally, a way to explain my favorite series to people...
Ever since the Black MIDI episode, I had been waiting for this episode dearly.
Thank you soo much to explain Touhou very well M8!!! And congrats for the 200,000 😃😃
"Even erotic fanfiction" Hey that gave me crippling depression
^I don't see any problem :^)
Ay
+Sairento Kira Well the age of consent in Japan is 14 soooooooooo...
It's actually 13
Sairento Kira thats illegal in russia you know
I've been wanting you to go over this for a long time. I'm so glad you did, I love this series and its characters and its godlike music with the whole community surrounding just remixing them.
touhou's music is incredible.
who hasn't heard Night of Nights?
+ryolo132 More than could recognize Flowering Night.
Or Luna Dial.
UN Owen and Bad Apple
+ryolo132 Don't forget Necrofantasia. And Septette for the Dead Princess. And Reach for the Moon. And Love-colored Master Spark. And Sleeping Terror. And...
+ryolo132 Knights*
Thanks to your Black Midi episode, I became a massive fan of Touhou themed metal. I'm super glad that you have now came back to it.
This Exists does covers my favorite game series ever?!
MY HERO!!
Bullet Hell is quite generous as name. Try "Descent in Visual Melting Madness and Audio Corruption."
we all know who is the strongest
⑨ Eye'm teh stronkest!
Yes Sariel is a amazing man.

Cirno!
+Jungler Kitsune Don't you talk about my Marisa like that. I will Master Spark the Love out of you.
+Jungler Kitsune Remi best 2hu. :P
Arguing about waifus.
Stupid ⑨s.
+Jungler Kitsune pussy (female cat) pls, Mokou and Keine are best waifu. Orin (and Shou) is stage 5 and isn't playable *insert Sanae's laugh*
+Jungler Kitsune Good taste
People think it's hard but only like 10% of the bullets are actually aimed at you. It's mostly positioning and patterns.
Oh how funny how many know Bad Apple but less know who Elly is....
What I love about Touhou is that it is propelled by its own bullshit.
And by bullshit I mean fan stuff.
HE MENTIONED MEGAMARI. YES.
Congratulations Sam you deserve all the subscribers this channel is amazing
I hate it when people not in the shmup community try to discuss bullet hell. They always get the facts wrong and try to make it seem more inaccessible than it actually is. The games are about memorization and execution, just like any other skill-based game.
+OyVeey get your fucking butt hurt out of here, the guy did a decent video on the subject fuck off.
+THE HUMAN MEME lifelong virgin club?
+DogeOf Illuminati To be fair, the video did make the games in the genre in general seem harder than they actually are.
Are they hard? Typically, yea, but it came across that anybody who is not of Japanese origin with the natural ability to game at the level of a god would fail before they even pressed start. It could possibly make somebody curious about these games not even bother, thinking the difficulty is beyond them.
+THE HUMAN MEME
I encourage people to join our secret /jp/ club. These games are really fun if they're your sort of thing.
Saint Mauve
hellsinker is possibly my favorite game ever made, and yeah
I wish I could subscribe 200,000 more times! The show is so great and you deserve more recognition! Thanks for being excellent to us!
MegaMari isn't a Megaman "hack" but it is based on it, close enough.
Sam, you are one of the most interesting to listen to, thoughtful, and insightful hosts of almost any show that I know of on this site. I have learned about so many cool things and things that relate to those things, all because of you. Congrats on passing the 200 grand mark, because you sure as hell deserve it.
+Indie Run Thanks so much for the kind word!
What to see a GREAT MARIO TOUHOU game. Super Marisa Land. It's incredibly well done tbh.
As a fan of Touhou since Embodiment of Scarlet Devil came out, I appreciate this video
*Me, seing him not talking about Ronald McDonald Insanity, since it made Touhou more known: *Sad clown sounds**
Love this channel so much. And since this video, you're now half way to 300k. Keep up the good work sam and crew!
TOUHOU!!!!!
Nick DoubleN YEZZ
This video was released 3 days ago and you've already gained 10.000 subs. I'm honestly proud of you.
That flandre scarlet fight tho ;)
I wish Touhou Project had more fan in the West! But this is comming in... We are becoming one of the greatest family in the world!
But thnk you thank yooooooouuuuuu thank youuuuu to have made one of the rare video explaining what Touhou is on UA-cam. ~
Touhou community : ever expanding universe
UA-cam community : COPYSTRIKE! COPYSTRIKE! COPYSTRIKE! COPYSTRIKE! COPYSTRIKE! * infinity
Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear long live touhou
I don't really know why watching this video made me cry, it might be because it's been a long time since I've actually PLAYED touhou rather than just ranting about it online and so I'm nostalgic or something, but y'know, thank you uvu;
I have a question pro touhou players
How can you dodge all of the attacks?
Did you memorize all the patterns?
I first experienced Touhou when Smooth Mcgroove did the acapella version of "U.N. Owen Was Her". I freaking loved the song so much that I went to investigate the source material. I ended up playing the games and I was hooked. The music, the characters, the humor, the difficulty, and the fan-base, everything about it is just so, dang, good.
*starts off with a clip of Utsuho's battle*
Until today I'm still beating myself over not being able to beat her on EASY MODO
I have a friend who has most of the Touhou games and I've seen him play them. They're really fun to watch, but kinda difficult to get the hang of.
is the touhou project community like the youtube community....
oh god. Where do I start with that sentence.
i can't believe you got almost everything right! as a fan of touhou, since the pc-98 days, i have to say im pretty impressed!
Ah, the wonder of Beer Powered Creativity
Your videos are awesome, and I wish they were longer! You deserve way more subscribers!! :D
To 200,000 more firsty viewers!
I'm so happy to be a fan of Touhou. Only two more extras to beat!
nice job
This is my favorite episode yet, keep it up dude
Touhou has always interested me, but the moment I look I game play of it, I instintly put away all thoughts of ever playing these games, as that looks completely impossible.
Lunatic and Hard are the only modes that are difficult. (Hard being arcade difficulty.) Normal is very much doable and Easy is too easy. The hitboxes of every sprite are much smaller than they look and are usually near the center.
also the loli's.
+Jonah J They're really not as difficult as they seem, they just look imposing but they're mostly just about pattern recognition and muscle memory.
It would be entirely possible to play with your eyes closed, it would just take a shitload of practice before hand.
BigHairyFenian Eh maybe I'll try it someday. I'm sure It'll kick my butt, but I do want to try it at some point.
+Jonah J Don't get me wrong, you'll get whooped a lot at first, but your skills will improve quickly if you keep at it. It's really helpful if you find a veteran who can guide you through some of the basic strategies (streaming, juking, PoC, etc.)
I blame this video for getting me into 2hu
ultra mode?
+Lollipop
That's for people who can walk in the rain without being drenched
I always wondered how people beat touhou on lunatic mode, i couldn't even get past the forth stage on normal in EoSD
You dun did it again
ayy lmao
This is by far my favorite UA-cam channel, it's so interesting an unique.
i enjoy this because you don't pronouce it as toohoo
I'm very glad to see "This Exists" will talk about a topic related to a particular Bullet Hell game named Touhou. Didn't even imagined that he will do this. Still a nice video. Keep it up.
