I could see this repelling method potentially getting someone in a very dangerous position.. If they accidentally repelled down not realizing that there was not enough rope, they would just be stuck.. Right?
Not exactly. If you noticed you were approaching the end, you could lanyard off and re-anchor. Then you could procede until the ground or until you ran out of rope. If you figured out how to climb the tree, then absolute worst case scenario you could just descend the exact same way you ascended. It might be slow, but it would work. There is a lot of great resources for addressing all kinds of issues surrounding the type of rappel that I used in the rock climbing and canyoning community.
