    The perfect length and amount of information for an introductory video. Using real video and stopping the action to explain the rules is a great teaching technique.

    I once got into an argument with a guy who thought that the ball does not have to touch the line to be "in." Like you can see the ball was in the outside green area (in your case) by a few millimeters. But he thought the circumference is all that needs to be in to be "in" (he thinks the ball doesn't have to touch the line). I tried to explain that the actual ball has to touch the actual line. This, is obviously fact. That's not the question. On a tangent, please let me know if their's anyone else that believes that merely the circumference/overhang/shadow of the ball makes it "in" so I can laugh at you as well. Although, back onto subject, in tennis there is a squash down factor with the ball. You can see it in all the different types of marks displayed on a clay court. But I would suspect that there would be less of a squish down with a pickleball obviously (being that's a stiffer, slower-moving ball). Maybe just a little bit of an expanded mark off of a faster slam. Basically, my question is how much of a circumference is there when judging whether the ball hit the line or not (aka how big is the mark)? Like if you rubbed the ball with a chalk or powder, I think the mark of pickleball would leave a mark that varies from about the size of a dime to a quarter. This is pretty important information for people that are calling lines, by the way. And I don't think anyone has taken on the challenge to do this research. It's pretty easy to do. Since you make videos about pickleball, you should do one.
    Btw, I, like most people, still generously give opponents the "full circumference (plus) of the doubt." I'm just interested for scientific purposes mainly.

    Why isn't anyone trying to smash the ball back instead of gently hitting it over.

    • @timhardman4764
      @timhardman4764 3 роки тому

      Good question. It looks like it would be so easy to put every shot away. But it's not that simple or easy:
      1.because they are beginners demonstrating how beginners play and the limited shots they have when starting.
      2. big swings & higher velocity increase the chance of hitting the ball into the net or out of bounds or carrying the person forward into the Non Volley zone (NVZ) or (Kitchen) after their swing.. It's a much higher risk shot that requires more skill to execute successfully and consistently..
      3. they can't stand right at the net like tennis and hit an overhead smash. Having to stand 7 feet from the net and make the smash changes the left - right angles and the down angle The "up"angle is also more limited because of the shorter court length. It makes the shot much harder. Plus the high point of contact with the ball in a tennis overhead smash due to the longer handle on the racquet opens up a great down angle than can be achieved in Pickle ball with the short racquet.
      4. In tennis, you step into the over head smash and follow through with a forward motion. In pickle ball, you are standing at a line 7 feet from the net when you hit a basically flat footed overhead that is all arm swing with some upper body twist/rotation. This is a foreign technique and motion that does not work in tennis because it is so weak. Steeping into the Non Volley Zone (NVZ) or (kitchen) after hitting a successful overhead in pickle ball (due to the momentum of your swing carrying you forward) is a fault, even if it happens a few seconds after your winning smash. You lose the point. There are examples of this situation where the player is windmilling for 5 seconds after hitting the smash with his toes on the line, trying to recover his balance so he doesn't step over the line. If he puts his hand down in the NVZ (kitchen) or his paddle to stop him from stepping forward, that is a fault. BUT, his partner, if he sees what is going on can grab his shirt or arm and pull him backwards keeping him from stepping into the kitchen as long as the partner is not in the kitchen (NVZ) himself.
      These differences, primarily not being allowed to volley within 7 feet of the net along with not being able to hit a volley for the first two shots after the serve make this game VERY interesting to play. It has a calming or neutralizing effect on (Tennis) power hitters playing at the "net" which in Pickle ball is actually 7' from the net when volleying.

      20k to convert them? Damn must be a cheaper way, I want to build one in my hometown. Play in a horseshoe league that donates back to the park we play in. Two(4 total courts) tennis courts(no leagues). Pickleball could catch on here.

    😑😦😨what? I guess its a good summertime game for the family in the backyard.? .... well I guess it would be good for the geezers that can't play tennis anymore🤷‍♂️ it's like if tennis was cigarettes this would be vaping. Instead of doing a normal workout at the gym. This would be CrossFit.😅🤗 I'm trying understand

    • @ThirdShotSports
      @ThirdShotSports  3 роки тому +1

      No. You’re not trying to understand. You’re trying to be clever. Not sure you succeeded. Tennis Is great. So is PB. In the summer and other seasons too. Though backyard is tough unless you have a fair bit of space and some flat hard ground. No need to disparage anyone who likes to play pickleball. It’s fun. You should try. You might be less mean after. Thanks for watching our video.

      -You only earn a point when your opponent hits the ball out of bounds on your serve. You only earn points on your own serve.
      -Your opponent only earns a point if you hit the ball in the net when he has served. You only earn points on your own serve.
      -If you get hit by the ball, you do not lose a point.

    • @ThirdShotSports
      @ThirdShotSports  7 років тому +3

      Kathrin Nolan Thanks for following up. As you point out, using regular scoring means you only earn a point if you win when your team is serving. Rally scoring allows either the servers or receivers to score a point.
      I suspect some confusion comes from the distinction between "losing A point" and "losing THE point". For example, you lose THE point if the ball hits you but you don't lose A point from your score. You are never deducted points.
      Finally, I invite you to watch to the end of the video because at the 4:00 mark I talk about scoring in some depth and highlight the kinds of things you mentioned.
