  • Major League Soccer (MLS) opened its season on Feb. 21, 2024, with a 2-0 Inter Miami victory over Real Salt Lake - with replacement referees calling the game. The first full slate of matches on Feb. 24, 2024, are also set to be officiated with replacement refs.
This comes after the MLS and Professional Referee Organization (PRO) announced a lockout last weekend after failing to come to an agreement with the Professional Soccer Referees Association (PSRA) on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
On Wednesday, PSRA referees picketed in New York City outside the MLS/PRO offices and in Dallas, where PRO was reportedly meeting with replacement refs to train them. WFAA spoke with two referees at Dallas' picket, Joe Dickerson and Allen Chapman. Chapman has been an MLS referee for over a decade, officiating two MLS Cups (2017, 2019). Dickerson has been an MLS referee since 2017, serving as the MLS All-Star Game referee in 2017 and the fourth referee for the 2022 MLS Cup.

Thank you WFAA for the comprehensive interview. Joe and Chris, wonderful representation at all levels of officiating. Best of luck with this being fairly resolved so we can see you back on the field.

Really hope they get a deal done sooner than later. They have money for Messi and are looking at loosening the purse strings for players in 2025, take care of your refs who uphold the integrity of the game.

That second referee’s jawline… sheesh. 🥵🥵🥵 pay these folks. MLS claims to be a serious league, you need serious, professional officials.

They used to be soooo bad, they inproved somewhat and with the growth of the league they have become somewhat indispensable. I say MLS needs to make this right...

How much do Referees in European leagues earn? And how do MLS Revenues compared to the EPL Revenues? What about Referee's in Liga MX or the Brasilerio A? For even more perspective, how much do Referees earn In the NFL, compared to Refs in the BIG TEN, compared to Refs in the MAC? This was a softball interview. I suspect that these MLS Referees might even be OVERPAID as it is, when you apply proper perspective.

Good lock them out for ever. These refs are the worst I have ever seen. Some are actually crooked.

The league will figure this oit. But every game played with replacement refs is hurting their case. They better hope the "scabs" don't do too good a job.

The way Penso said, “of course Miami won” sounded like the win was predetermined. I’m sure that’s not what he meant because sooner/futbol is never dishonest. That being said, pay these people so they don’t have to work side jobs.

No I think he said it because it was clear they had both seen it.

God Chris Penso is often pretty terrible at his job, but I'm for PRO getting their raises.

Look at how much European Leagues pay their Referees. And then compare MLS's revenues vs the EPL's revenues. If anything MLS actually OVERPAYS their Refs by comparison. No joke.

Have to be honest. MLS refs have been not bad but TERRIBLE compared to any major soccer league. I watched 4 MLS matches so far this weekend and the replacement refs are by far doing a much better job. They let them play more and are not afraid to overrule themselves on VAR decisions. I have been watching soccer for 15 years at all levels and I am encouraged for the first time ever by these new MLS referees. Have any other fans noticed this as well?

New hires are always more ‘“productive” that the old guys 😉

I watch EPL a great deal, and I don't agree with you.
