I don't think he was faking it, per se. I think the character had legitimate mental illness, but he exaggerated it to deal with trauma, to play roles, to deflect suspicion, etc.
Speaking of that crazy jibber jabbering fool Murdock, happy 74th birthday to the legendary Dwight Schultz. BTW, he was also Lt. Reginald Barclay on Star Trek: The Next Generation!!!
Murdock was my favorite! Always funny, and drifting in and out of accents so effortlessly! As a kid I wanted do learn to do that, and I did - but my Irish accent got f-up when I learnt the Australian accent, and now I can't do either of those because they melt together! The funny thing is that the way Murdock speaks normally on the show was an accent too - he made the character have a somewhat southern sound to him, while Dwight is actually from... Baltimore.
At 3:28 onwards, you can see that the colonel guy is actually sorta concerned and apologetic. Maybe even a tiny bit horrified by the (false, tho he didn't know) thought that Murdock had had electroshock therapy.
Thank you for this clip with Amy and Col. Lynch. I haven't found this clip anywhere else on youtube! It's interesting to see the slight adjustments in how he played Murdock between this pilot episode and the rest of the series. :)
thanks, ill be adding more Murdock clips. he was definitely a character . Dwight Schultz was actually fired after the part where he shaves his head. they said he was to over the top . right after that there was a screening of the show with him and the audience loved him so much they brought him back in .
@@nextellcup8 Thanks! They also almost kept this actor as Face instead of Dirk Benedict, and that too would have been a big mistake. Not that this actor was bad, but he didn't have Dirk's singular flavor of charm. I'm glad that Dwight and Dirk have remained friends ever since.
