Welcome to Medellin and Colombia. I think Laureles could be more family-friendly as the type of tourists that go there are quieter (not just backpackers, digital nomads) and looking to stay long-term. Generally speaking, I would say Colombians are really used to black people, and ALL Colombians have black friends, coworkers, classmates, and actually many Colombians have an African background on some level too!

Yes! I love not feeling like an oddity because the culture is familiar with Black people; it’s really nice.

Hi, i’m hoping to learn from a local more about the race relations, i hope it’s ok that i ask you. Is segregation a thing or are people separated based on socioeconomic differences? I’ve been looking for a local school for my kids so they can learn the culture and language and make friends but i don’t see any black kids in the schools. Not that they need to make black friends…it was just surprising when i see black people everywhere else

Thank you for sharing. I’m a single mother of two small kids looking to decide between Medellin and Kenya and it’s sooo hard to choose 😅

Ohhh, we haven’t been to Kenya but I’ve heard great things! Getting around Medellín & finding a school in the city were the deal breakers for us, but the community is strong! Sounds like you’ve got a scouting trip to Kenya to plan 👀

So glad I stumbled across your channel! Our family is headed to Medellin for a 10-day trip, and based on this, we'll probably set up our home base in the Laureles neighborhood. Sounds like Poblado is amazing, too.

@@aguerra5It was fantastic! It was a great family trip that really brought us together. We ended up staying in Poblado because I wanted a nice pool for my kid. Top experiences were Guatape, a cooking class that included a visit to the farmer's market, and the Communa 13 tour.

There's tons of great parks (Not in Poblado though haha) Check out Unidad Deportiva de Belén. It's in a great neighborhood Belén Malibu. Very family friendly, walkable streets, etc. Enjoy your travels!

I was in Envigado and I thought it was very walkable. It’s more local. Where you stayed was more touristy.

Hey guys really Love your channel and you have gained a subscriber. I stayed in Medellin for the past 5 months as a single black man who wasn't there for Drugs, Sex or Alcohol I found the city very unsafe. I have never had to look over my shoulder as much as when I was in the military. People there will rob and kill you for 2 pesos. I couldn't be myself and dress the way I felt without being concerned about someone robbing me. Couldn't wear a watch, talk on my phone, wear nice clothes. They say don't draw attention to yourself. All of Medellin has trash everywhere homelessness, noise, pollution and as a single man trying to meet a quality, intelligent, emotionally stable women was impossible. The city is a cesspool of thieves, murderers, desperate people who will lie and kill you just for 2 pesos. You will be "gringo" priced EVERWHERE you go. Yes the weather and views are absolutely amazing. But for me Medellin is all icing and no cake... Glad you guys made it out safely. I actually am writing this from my hotel in Panama, left Medellin yesterday...

Sorry you had that experience. i’m (f33) here with my family (m39, m9, f8) and we’ve been completely safe. I’m cautious like i would be in any other big city but haven’t had any issues or fears. I think things must be a lot tougher for single men for you to feel that way

I speak Intermediate Spanish but because I’m not fluent I still have some challenges. The accent in Medellin presented a little bit of difficulty, but it wasn’t bad. There are also plenty of people in service & hospitality who speak English so you won’t be completely lost if you only speak English

Im black as well but whats the point of mentioning it in a country like Colombia? Americans are so addicted to race talk sadly.

This video is for people who are looking to relocate or visit & they have an interest in the race component. We aren’t “addicted” to “race talk”.. we are concerned about safety, peace of mind & well being.

@@o.family.adventures I understand your point of expressing how you would feel about travelling as a black person. Other people would find it useful to know the points of view of female travellers, LGTB people, backpackers, people looking to retire, as Latino, Asian, etc etc

He's married, of course he brings his "sand" with him, and he should always bring his "sand" with him! You should also understand that going to the beach for "sand" means everyone is enjoying that "sand" but his "sand" is just for him. If you are going to Medllin for the "sand" you are paying an expensive price to simply play in the local "sand."
