The ending though 😂 Nice video. I am trying to get my hands on newer or maybe the older leaf. I see that a whole bar needs to be installed so its a bit harder than I taught, but still doable. Thanks!
Just installed towbar on a ze1. The design I used puts small reinforcing plates inside the chassis rails. Use a spring wire wrapped onto bolts & threaded through chassy rail to pull them into place. Easier than it sounds. Wiring was more of a pita for me
I guess you have limited options outside of the USA, but within the US, you can get a Curt brand hitch which doesn't require drilling and is easy to install. I don't typically use my Leaf for towing, but as I have a better suited truck for that. However, I have towed a trailer weighing at least 2,500 Lbs (1134 Kg) a few times. It was a 25 mile trip and I never got above 50 MPH. I wouldn't suggest doing it, but it can be done. I did that 3 times in total. Each time I was hauling 250 gallons of water to a house I was building and my truck was out of service during that time. It used the whole battery - one way.
Cool story.... that's good to know.... what type of leaf and how many SOH bars ? Just curious cuz I would like to know what to expect from my leaf(2013 SL 10/12 SOH)
@@matthewzizzo4586 It's gone down this past year. It's an early 2013. It's 9 bars right now (I think), but it may have just dropped to 8. It dropped another bar in the past month, but I don't recall exactly. Average guess-o-meter as 60-65 MPH (Now, during the summer). I do have quite a few miles for a leaf... I think it's in the 110,000 mile range. The car is not nearby right now, so I can't quickly verify. This car has never been level 3 charged, as the original owner didn't buy the Chademo package.
Love the e-bike, perfect for shorter trips (inte bilen under milen som vi säger i Routsi). And for longer trips you have it as a “lifeboat” on the tow bar!
Are you psychic ? I have been thinking about making my LEAF into a real car. What I was wondering was how to do the electrics. Was afraid it would need the cabling with relays to avoid errors in the car. Thanks !
From my personal research this brink tow bar for leaf is only made to fit a bicycle rack and not suited to tow a trailer! Or I might be wrong, I am from Belgium and the leaf is not omologated to tow a trailer.
Great Job! Thank you. Did you need to use an electronic module or relay unit in the wiring, or were you able to get the rear electrical connection wires to connect directly to the car wiring? I have been told the CAN bus on the car can cause issues without a relay. Many thanks 👍
This was connected directly to the tail lights. Confirmed to work on both ZE0 and AZE0 without causing any CANbus errors! But yes, additional fuses/relays is the proper way to do it!
The kit that I purchased has a long enough wire to route to the front battery. I wonder if there is a power circuit closer. I haven't wired it yet but got the module installed that connects to the LH and RH tail light connectors inline.
I want to tow the leaf with a motorhome with an A bar but can I mount it without strengthening the crush sections in the frame? This is a very useful thing to do! please to this so I can see! there are 100,000 motorhomes just in NZ, another 2 million in EU. lots of views there. I think it's the best car to tow for a number of reasons.
Have you taken your car for yearly service? They basically only change cabin fresh air filter (and dont even use HEPA ones), brake fluid every second year and check the electronics. I would rather skip and do all fluid changes etc by myself but i am not sure if i dare since i got 5 year, 0% financing for 2022 62kwh and financing companies require yearly service and no modifications but do they really ever care if no accident happen?
What are the legal rules around towing with a leaf in Finland? We aren't allowed in Sweden at all, at most a 55kg bike on the hitch but no trailer at all. I asked Nissan Europe and they said it's the same construction in EU and US cars, but the beaurocracy for registering a car with towing is easier in the states. Tldr; how much can you legally tow in Finland with a Nissan Leaf? :)
Sadly in UK the Nissan Leaf has a zero rating for towing. Therefore you cannot legally fit a tow bar. The Leaf has not been certified, crash tested. Also the regen is not configured for any extra weight only people plus luggage.
Interesting that the initial 10mm bolt heads snapped off. I had exactly the same experience with those holding the mudflaps. That suggests inferior quality to me.
Just road salt corrosion, I'm not sure any reasonable volume manufacturer would use stainless steel fasteners. Now they could use zip ties or push pins. A box of genuine Nissan plastic trim push pins are cheap also.
Hi Dala, great job (and video) on the towbar fix. Was this Brink towbar specially for the LEAF or was it for another car, but it fitted the LEAF anyway?? On the Brink UK website it is not shown, or doesn't appear to be available. Many thanks.
I was in to that the 55kg limit until I saw that massive steel beam :D. In 10 years you will see old Leafs pulling those luggage trailer trains in airports :D
Yeah the tow attachement that was on the one side of the beam is technically capable of 2000kg (entire vehicle weight). So no issues really from that side :D
@@ChrisBigBad Yes and no. Yes, because there is no law in Germany forbidding to use bike carriers mounted on a tow bar even if tow rating says 0 in registration documents. And No, because very expensive Brink was not bothered to TUV test it. So it was not approved by TUV and that means it is illegal to mount anything to your vehicle in Germany that has no official approval. But don't worry, no one really cares in Germany anymore...
And if you can't tell whether you have a boy car or a girl car after this, you're just *not* paying attention. Also, the best mod you can make is the 62kWh battery swap.

You have very good qualities content on your videos. Very good job Dala. Always learning from you...👍
I have done this with torklift central ecohitch. It is super handy with a small utility trailer.
Just installed towbar on a ze1.

How much did you have to pay for the set? I want to buy it , can't find reasonable way.
300€ on ebay, "Brink LEAF towbar"

No clue, I void warranties...
Do you have any information on doing this to a 2018 leaf gen 2 and what component to use. Lighting and electrical not important. Thanks in advance
It is the same. Here is an US 2018 getting a tow bar: ua-cam.com/video/lAjL9gXMBlk/v-deo.html
Love this ending lol
haha made my afternoon
towbar model? and how much weight can tow?
10000lb, for sure.
www.autodoc.co.uk/brink/7522103
Towing weight is not defined for this tow bar as trailer towing with Leaf is forbidden on EU area.
Maybe you could bring a Sur-Ron on the hook?, Also, why use the splash shield? It seems to cause more issures than it solves?
The splash shield lowers the aero-drag, and thus lowers consumption. Best to have it!
Hello sir...all ur vids appreciated .
Bro , what was that sound when you turn your car on?
Noisy electrical handbrake!
THAT was the sound of awesomeness.
With the EV-NX you can tow legally? I think that the original tow weights stay on the car even with fuel type change?
Yes the EVNX will be able to tow legally!
Why did you need to grind the towbar at the end to attach your trailer? (European hitches seem different than North American ones.)
Bike carriers have nubs that prevent you from accidentally hooking up a trailer to them!

0kg 😉
Unfortunately, these hooks from Brink are out of stock everywhere and last time I asked Brink, they will not make any more.

May not work in Australia due to the mandatory spare wheel fitting.
Dude in new cars where is no spare wheel. Only some cheap air blower and glue to fill the hole
Spare isn’t mandatory in 🇦🇺
What is the exact Brink tow kit you used for your leaf?

what is the maximum towing weight ? nothing ?

@end: data lives dangerously
why grinding the towing ball ?
Bike towbars have nubs to prevent trailers from being attached. Can't have that!
Dala, do you think there is room under the trunk of the Leaf to add an extension traction battery? Maybe an additional 10-15kWh?
Fit? Yes. Legal in Finland? No

action movie. yes!!
Awwww. I recently checked my German registration and it says: towing capacity is zero :(
Should still be possible to use bike carriers!
