  • This week I am not doing my usual travel vlog of Britain because I’ve spent days without power or without running water… and I’ve honestly just been in survival mode! But for one brief hour when life seemed under control, Ian took some wonderful drone footage of the snow in our area. I decided to do a quick video to share with everyone to see a view of this part of the world… from the sky.
Be sure to stay tuned for more taste test and UK travel vlog videos next week hopefully! Cheers! XX

We had a burst pipe that looked exactly like that a couple winters ago. That was no fun. I hadn't really thought how living somewhere where it so rarely snows would result in there being no mechanisms in place to deal with it. We are also praying that electricity and running water and other needs are met soon for those without. Thanks for sharing this footage.

    • @MagentaOtterTravels

Where were you living when the pipe burst? I think the issue is how we build houses around here. We really should not be putting water pipes on exterior walls, and the insulation is terrible!

It is SOOOOOO flat where we live! Yes, big skies and lovely sunsets. But it is NOT optimal for sledding! My one big UA-camr regret of the week is not capturing the sight that I saw on Tuesday. An SUV was towing a long tether behind it down the street with 3 groups of children on sleds all attached. It was the craziest thing!!! I thought "I guess that is what you do when there are no actual hills around! Tow your children on sleds down the snowy street!"

AND... I'll have you know that even though I decluttered LOTS of towels... I still had 14 towels to mop up the flood water on our kitchen floor! I was grateful that I had not been TOO aggressive in downsizing the bath towel collection. We have lived through too many water problems to not have learnt that lesson...

It's crazy to think that what Texas got, would totally be a non event and just another typical day here in the Milwaukee area. But yet a mild winter weather event in Wisconsin, would become a crisis situation in Texas, because the power grid isn't winterized like the Wisconsin power grid is. And because there is also no salt or plow trucks in Texas either.
I've never been in a warm climate before in the winter time, since I've never been outside of the northern states. So it's strange for me to think about. 🤔
But the Texas situation makes me really appreciate all the stuff we have here to combat cold weather.
It just goes to show that mother nature is still in charge.
My prayers go out to all the Texas citizens having to go through this big mess. 🙏
Hopefully the Texas infrastructure will start to adapt, so a bad situation like this doesn't happen again. It's so sad that lives were lost in this freak weather event.

We definitely need our power grid and our water supply to be better prepared for this type of weather! And honestly, we should be building houses that are better prepared to withstand bitter cold temperatures as well!
The worst part about the pipe bursting was knowing that everyone around me was having the same problem and plumbers would be so hard to get! It was a miracle we got someone the next day!!

Our leaders are something else. This is just a replay of the situations we had in 1989 and 2011. After those events they were told what they needed to do to prevent it all from happening again and decided to ignore the advice. Instead of taking responsibility for things they're blaming wind turbines. Problem is we lost almost twice as much electric capacity from downed traditional power stations (like natural gas) than we did from renewable sources and we didn't have renewables during previous cold snaps but we still had rolling blackouts. Turbines don't freeze in Canada or states to the North because they build them to withstand the cold.
