Ken, a member of my family is a recognized fashion photographer working with some of the top models regularly. The camera she uses is Canon 5D Mark 4 and will stay with Canon because of investment in glass and it is a superb camera. She used my Z 711 with 24-70 S lens and was blown away by the quality of the file, tonality, color. I think that we are getting a little over the top in our endless picking apart of different cameras. I remember shooting Formula 1 racing with a Nikon F. Tri-x, manual focus of course, and no motor drive. Quality was off the graph. To me it is - the quality of the FILE, color rendition and tonality. And, respectfully, this is where Nikon should get a little praise. Best and thanks for your forum.
Nikon and Canon have different looks. Both are superb; it’s up to the artist to pick one or the other based on personal preference. While I prefer Canon’s ergonomics, again it’s a personal decision - and ergonomics are critical when you shoot all day. DSLRs handle faster than Mirrorless. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV Interesting and thanks for response. Actually, the camera that ergonomically I adore and cannot get rid of is the old Nikon D7000. Old, but underrated. I think the issue is still the file and color, tonality. Appreciate your responses.
@@josephcattano6150 I have one of those - it is an awesome camera. I use a z50 because I wanted a more modern censor, and like the size and handling for travel etc. I think we've gone insane wrt camera specs. I loved the D40 because it was light, handled well, and took great pictures at a mere 6 megapixels...now pros need fast and sharp so that they can compete.
@@Yupthereitism he just loves Canon due to ergonomics. Ken is a God. He just knows. I’ve switched to Canon after years of Nikon. I’m old school though. I don’t need a modern camera. 5D Mk ii
Great review man. I really like the fact you went into detail about build quality. I wish more reviews contained this information. Where it's made, how it's made, and what it's made of, does matter in a time when more and more cost cutting measures are used by manufacturers. I'd gladly pay more for a well built product than less for a cheaply made one.
I came back to watch this review before I purchase this camera. I shoot mostly landscapes. The biggest thing I agree with is the color rendition that comes straight out of this camera is unlike any other camera I've shot with. I've also shot with the Canon EOS R5 and the Sony a7R IV, and while the focusing capabilities are better on those systems, it all comes back to the color for me. Nikon's colors just have something about them that I favor over the others. So after watching this review, despite its shortcomings, I think this is the camera for me. Thanks for a thorough and honest review!
It’s all about color. If Nikon gives you your look, then it’s Nikon all the way. All the Nikons have similar color; no one ever talks about the R5 and it’s superb as well. Thanks!
I'm a huge Nikonian. I've owned Nikons since the 80's. My first new Nikon was the N8008. I've never owned a Canon. I'm ready to make the switch to mirrorless. But this Z7 is disappointing. It looks and feels cheap, especially at this price point. I know that one advantage to mirrorless is smaller and lighter, but this body is actually too small and the ergonomics are lacking compared to my D800E. The auto focus on the Z7 is also known to be sub par. So I am left with either getting a Canon (not likely) or waiting for a Z8, which I am confident is coming, because the Z9 is the pro camera and I refuse to believe that the Z7 is considered the equivalent of the D800 series.
Great review Ken, this was a nice change from all of the other UA-cam video reviews with young folks that don't seem to have a good handle on photographer or technical terms and focus on the wrong things. Also, nice clear audio and the iPhone 12 does a great job for video reviews like this I have one too and its great. For me this is the camera I want because of one thing, image quality. I've seen many samples and this just looks better than anything else.
Been following you on the net and tabbed you for quick access. You are my source for detailed info and reviews . Didn't know until moments ago that you had a YT channel. Subscribed!
@@KenRockwellTV Lol you surprised me here haha. But on a serious note - there is no other UA-cam channel so straight to the point, and packed with sooo much experience as you do. That's why it so stands out and so valuable
Wow! This review is packed with information! More thorough than any review I have seen. One problem I have had with mirrorless cameras is the grip. This is where the R5 beats the z hands down. Or hands on! Feels just like a DSLR. I never thought I'd even consider switching to Canon. Still unlikely. About half my lenses will not af with the ftz adapter. So, I have to take a leap, especially financially, if I move to mirrorless whether Nikon or Canon. I've been considering the Z7ii to complement my D500 but this review leaves me doubting the wisdom of that.
Go Canon. I did. When you go Mirrorless very little of what you own comes with you, and everything changes in Mirrorless. Nikon has NEVER been the leader in Mirrorless and it’s not likely they ever will. See also www.kenrockwell.com/tech/comparisons/nikon-vs-canon-vs-sony-full-frame.htm Thanks!
Nice and thorough review. I agree with you about certain ergonomic issues, such as the no AF lever, no illuminated buttons, the auto-update of the U-modes, the feeling of the dials ... I was pretty disappointed when the Z series came out and they didn't really change anything with the Z6/7ii. And no AF screw in the FTZ adaptor. Oh well.
It’s fine. As pros know, it’s never about the camera www.kenrockwell.com/tech/notcamera.htm if you want to know what is a pro camera, it’s the one that gets out of the way of making a great photo www.kenrockwell.com/tech/pro-camera.htm
Advice needed: I am still shooting with D7000, but the idea of upgrading the body has been slowly growing in my mind. Have had D7000 for over 12 years now and it still performs well, but low-light performance, contrast and AF capabilities are limiting more and more often and I feel like the glass would deserve a better body at this point. Since I own AF-S 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 VRII, I want to stick with Nikon platform. Going through tons of DSLR vs. mirrorless reviews and discussions and trying to catch-up with the recent development of the market, I have not been able to decide if it is a good time to switch to something like Z6 with FTZ, or stay with DSLR and get D780. I don't shoot much video, mostly stills / ladscape / sports / portraits, you know, all-round hobby photographer. Any advice would be appreciated =)
Like night and day DSLR vs Mirrorless. Mirrorless is new and popular and lets you see and set and magnify everything all through the finder especially in broad daylight, while a DSLR gets the job done faster. Mirrorless always makes you wait a fraction of a second for the camera to respond while DSLR just goes. Which is more important to you?
@@KenRockwellTV Thanks for your quick reply =) The thing is, I have really got used to having an optical viewfinder, sadly I have not been able to get my hands on Z6 (or equivalent) to see how much of a difference it would be - I plan to do that regardless. If you say the response of a DSLR is still superior, that is kinda a dealbreaker for me. I know that what I am asking is very subjective opinion, just wanted to see if there's someone in a similar situation.
DSLR controls and finder are all immediate. Mirrorless is maddening, for instance even the Z7 II finder displays don’t update shutter and aperture until a moment after you turn the dial. Maddening!
I still like and use my D7200 for commerical work and landscapes. For most applications, with good glass it matches everything this Z7 II does. HIgh ISO and pixel count are sprinkles on a chocolate sundae. Maybe the next Nikon at this level will have a built in flash.
@@terrywbreedlove For me the built in flash is great for wireless control of my flash. Ofc you can buy the cheapest Nikon flash for that functionality, but that is just another item to remember to bring, keep charged and so forth. I’d much rather that they had included a built in flash.
I have a z711 and love the file, color tonality. That is what it is all about. However my D7000 is like my old pal. I love the ergonomics and performance. I know - its old
I know. People who can shoot rarely have the time to talk about it. A thousand thanks!!! See also www.kenrockwell.com/tech/2-kinds-of-photographers.htm
Hello friend KEN, good afternoon, a personal question, what do you think about low light video with the Nikon Z 7 II, my highest regards for the work you do for the community of beginners and professionals in photography and video. I want to change my Nikon D7500 DSLR camera. thanks for your time
I don't use these for video; I use either my iPhone or I would investigate a dedicated video camcorder www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=camcorder&N=0&BI=287&KBID=1037
Hey Ken, wedding photog looking to upgrade my old D810s and was looking into both Z6II, Z7II and R5, switching to Canon is hard to be honest as Ill have to sell everything obviously and buy everything again for Canon system but I think if the switch is well worth it (the whole fuss) I might aswell go for it but I can't decide yet as I can't rent neither system prior buying. From your videos I understand you prefer the R5. I need something that will give me security when capturing vital moments, cropping options (that's why I lean more towards Z7II and R5) and overall a good system that will held its ground for years. I guess youd say R5 right? Great content by the way, new here.
Canon EOS R5 yes! Beware: thanks to COVID I haven’t been able to shoot groups since the Z7 and Z6, but they were total failures as they always chose the wrong face (usually in the back) when photographing a group of people. Even my iPhone is so much better. Why Mirrorless? I’d stick with the DSLR and go D850 before downgrading to Mirrorless.
Everyone’s different, which is why they make so many. For serious photos at a low peace I LOVE the EOS RP www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/rp.htm with either the ultralight RF 24-105mm STM www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/24-105mm-stm.htm or the do-everything RF 24-240mm www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/24-240mm.htm only get one lens; the 24-240 does more but weighs more.
I've been following you for years and years! FYI - I just got my new Z7ii (along with an FTZ adapter(purchased separately)) from Amazon yesterday, and the EH-7P charging adapter was not written on the original box nor supplied.
I'm interested to know why you'd be at asa 200 and 1/4 of a second in that 2nd image? I'm asking in a passive way. Is the IBIS that good that you're happy making that trade? I'm still to migrate to mirrorless so I'm thinking like a film and DSLR shooter. Thanks for everything you share Ken!
Yes!!! ISO 200 is sharper and cleaner than any higher ISO, so if I can use it, I do, which is how I get such detailed night shots that others shooting the easy way at, say ISO 3,200, just can’t get. Thanks!
Thanks Harry!!! Honestly these would be better if I taught people how to make a great picture rather than how to buy a great camera, but it’s tougher and much less linear to teach art rather than talk about technology.
Great reviews, thanks for taking the time to create these. Any thoughts on the Canon R6 Mark II, for photojournalism and wildlife? Between the 2 some non-detailed VS if possible would be nice, just the things that stand out if you've used the R6 Mark II.
I way prefer Canon, which I explain at www.kenrockwell.com/tech/comparisons/nikon-vs-canon-vs-sony-full-frame.htm . Here's what I think of the R6 II so far www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r6-ii.htm Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV, @user-hf1zm1bu7v Yes the R6 II is a terrific camera. In fairness, this Z7II is also a great buy, if your use case is based on 'Image Quality' - autofocus...not so much! 🙂
Hi Ken I'm looking to replace / upgrade my 7dmkii + 6D kit , most of which was lost to major , unprecedented flooding where I live. I'm down to 7Dii body , a 100-400 zoom and a cheap kit lens that I never got around to disposing of. I previously used the 7dii for wildlife and action and the 6d for everything else . Im seriously considering the z7ii to replace the lot . With the Z , I can shoot in crop mode to gain the extra reach of the apsc format for wildlife , or crop in post with the higher pixel count. I will also have all the advantages of full frame. I can get the z7ii for less than the price of a r6 and r7 combo , which have completely different control layouts that will make swapping between them difficult. I would be interested anyone's thoughts on my predicament.
I’m not sure why you would want a lesser performing SD card slot. I have angel bird CF express be cards that read at 1700 Mb and they write generally between 600 and 1000 Mb a second to a m.2 ssd drive. The best you’re going to get with a UHS to card is like 270 Mb. The CF express B slot was a big deciding factor for me as I already had them for my d850. I wrote raw to the CF slot and jpeg fine to the ssd. (I’m a working wedding photographer btw)
I’m practical. SD slots and readers see everywhere and I have the cards, so they are more for me. Even the Sony A1 prefers two SD compatible slots. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV I think a lot of people do not realize the performance increase with the CF express B cards. I have multiple readers scattered all over for that reason. But when I have to transfer 1500-3000 65mb raw files to my PC it makes life so much better to have it done in 1min vs 30min.
Thanks for all the years, hand held push a must as my d-700 and the 105mm is my last lens to Bokeh fun,and then I shoot sports that found me here on all great features going out to uprade my z-5,which is great if one is looking for good average auto focus next to Canon.
No. They are completely different cameras for very different kinds of shooting. I use my 14 year old Nikon D3 every day in my studio. Works great. Your d850 should have st least another ten years in it.
Just gotta know how to shoot. Software makers scared everyone into thinking you can’t edit jpgs. Baloney, JPGs edit easily - even in Adobe camera raw!!!Thanks!
Thanks for this Ken. I am teetering on purchasing this camera. This is very helpful. However, I am still waiting to hear more on Z9 as many of us Nikon shooters are.
I know you think Canon ergonomics are better than Nikon., but nikons photo/video switch is a lot faster to use than the R6 that doesn't even let you save custom video settings. The Nikon automatically saves your last settings. I know you don't shoot video Ken but a lot of people do and will - and if they don't know this they could end up a bit disappointed.
@@KenRockwellTV ... but Ken people watching your videos do buy these cameras to also use video. My point is the Nikons are good at moving between the two compared to Canon.
Hello Mr Rockwell, sorry to break the bubble, but you seems to have reviewed a faulty sample. I own a z5 and it’s dial works just instantaneously, like all other controls. I have even set up the camera as per my desire, and still working fine. Either your sample is bad, or mine is excellent
Not sure to what cameras dial you’re referring. My internal clock runs at a much higher rate than normal humans so I am particularly sensitive to delays. I’m sure all samples are the same at this, although they will vary with firmware revisions. Thanks!
Love your reviews on the website and now on your channel, i subscribed! About the camera, i have a canon R5 and i also love to shoot jpg files. I love the R5 colors, but the nikon colors are very good now too.... BTW can you make a video about raw vs jpg, i know its gonna be leading to discussions, but i find that the newest camera"s like mine, have cpu power and advanced software that makes good decisions what to keep and throw away.
@@KenRockwellTV While I disagree, I can see your point and also respect it, everyone has their opinion, that's legit. But, you are quite a know guy out here, I always disagree with absolute statement. I think you should update that page, or at least not link it in (almost) 2023. I think it is misleading and many points not up to date. Just out of my mind: - SD Space - Buffer - Computer Computational Power needed - Backup - Buring onto CDs - etc... There are way many points that I think are highly irrelevant in today's standard. Just to put into perspective, when I bought my D7200, I thought I would have needed 128GB of space because of all this RAW thing, so I bought 2 in order to put them in backup mode. Even in a 3 weeks trip, having shoot more than 2K photos, haven't filled it up. And that single SD costed just Tens of euros (a good SanDisk one, mind you). Yesterday, in a MediaMarket I saw an 8TB external disk at a mere 150-ish bucks (Sandisk not a low tier brand). Speaking of power, computer are starting to become much more powerful than our software nowadays. An Intel 13th gen laptop or Ryzen 6th gen, are powerhouses for just around 1K in a portable format. Without speaking the new Macbooks M2. I mean...It doesn't really have any drawback now. When I was shooting with my first Nikon D100 sure, I may agree and I also find myself in that situation, but not today. I think I can all sum it up in RAW --> JPG, but not viceversa. At least, shoot RAW, come home, just look if there is anything you need to edit, and just export all the rest in JPG, at least you had the possibility with no real disadvantages (With my Ryzen 9 I can export around 1K photos in minutes, its amazing). I don't wont to change your mind. But just consider what I just said and maybe rethink that article, that's it. Thanks for reading in case.
@@LtColDavenport Raw is like a religion or political affiliation; people are pretty set in their ways. I prefer JPG, others like raw. It's a free country but that freedom isn't free, so people can do as they wish. Thanks!

I do wish Nikon protected the sensor better during lens changes. I wish it took a month to find dirt on the sensor like you mentioned.... I'm cleaning these nearly weekly in busy seasons.
Good to see that at ISO 3200, the grain starts to match the poor grain of TriX developed in Acufine or Diafine. (The best you could get 50 years ago.(g)
Hey there Ken... As a an avid fan of D800s since the day they came out.. Im finally in need to upgrade my favorite! More for super sharp landscapes and also high res 360 sphericals (just upgraded shaved 10.5 to 8-15mm) I'm having a really hard time deciding on Z7ii or the d850! One major issue why I'm swaying towards Z7II is because I have some serious mobility challenges to consider and although Ive very well managed larger bodies and lenses.. age is getting the better of me and trying to cut down on weight. I just don't want that to be the deciding factor when there are other areas of concern that You've mentioned (especially build outside of Japan because living here i KNOW that Japanese have much higher standards) All round.. Im sorta just shy of a coin toss.. Thoughts... Z7ii? ? D850? ... losing sleep over this
@@KenRockwellTV Thanks man! I wound up going with the z7ii Price wasn't the issue it was a number of things you'd mentioned in this video. Me sticking with D800s wasnt a budget thing it was a weight thing and the question of "what more could anyone really need?" Im not sure how many Ive went through because I worked 'm over pretty bad.. they could take a beating though! A plastic Z7ii? this scared me... I am simply blown away at this point on so many levels though! Thanks for all the great work you've done over the years! Ive been diehard follower since your earlier days and my go to in considering anything cam/lens related!
thanks for the review Ken, I like the camera but I also like the ultra compact cameras that sony is able to make, by the way you say that you make these videos using an iphone but I guess the audio isn't the internal microphone of the iphone, or is it?
about sensor protection. nikon decided to protect the shuter instead. the shuter is much more sensitiv and not easyli to clean. maybe there should be an option in the menu to choose how you like it. but maybe nikon counts more waranty cases with broken shuter than dirty sensors.
All my Nikon Mirrorless sensors need cleaning. Never damaged a Nikon shutter in 40 years. Sad that Nikon optimizes the camera to protect themselves from the stupider customers at the expense of people who know how to shoot - another reason I prefer Canon. Thanks.
If you are, go Canon. When you go mirrorless very little of what you have now works that well with the new Nikon system. In a few years you’ll eventually have re-bought everything for Mirrorless, and then will realize as I’m telling you now that you should select which brand of system is best for you and go with it from the start. Mirrorless is a completely different world with different leaders. I personally prefer and suggest Canon. Nikon is severely flawed for people like me who owned lots of Nikon lenses because the FTZ adapters won’t autofocus with many of Nikon’s lenses. Go Canon if you go mirrorless. Thanks!
Astounding how high the quality of the images are....at 1/8th of a second...hand held.....on a zoom lens.....all the way open!!! These images are better than Leica images. Never thought I'd say that! Truly amazing how advanced the technology has come.
Shooting some night shots the other night - long exposures no moon light - had to feel around for the buttons since they aren’t illuminated. Yeah, we all have our smartphone flashlights but it would have been much better if Nikon wouldn’t cheap out on illuminated buttons.
Very comprehensive review. While doing ISO comparison if you could have base ISO image on one side so that we can visually compare as iso goes up, it would be great.
You got it!! You should have been in meetings with me back when I had real jobs in offices. I’d blurt out the truth in big meetings with VIPs that no one else had the guts to say, even though they all were thinking the same thing. Thanks!
Come on how can anyone get rid of a d850 for this?. And I’m watching videos that are saying it’s an upgrade 😂 sorry but not in my eyes it isn’t Good review it’s certainly made up my mind.. Thanks Ken
I'm tortured, I'm literally changing my mind everyday. I'm looking to update my D750 to either a D780 or go mirrorless, I have a dream collection of F mount lenses, is the Z7II that much of an upgrade from the D780 for general purpose photography?
NO!!! Nikon’s Z series leaves a lot to be desired. It is NOT an upgrade to any DSLR. Your lenses won’t ever work well on Mirrorless because there’s no aperture ring coupling, Nikon skipped it. If you want to go Mirrorless go Canon or even OM system, but pass on Z. The worst thing about Z is iffy AF performance in all ada AF mode. Does this help? Your dilemma comes from reading too much of Nikon’s own marketing fluff and listening to too many people who blindly beloved that more is compatible between Nikon DSLR and Z. Especially for those of us with classic f mount lenses the Z is a poor choice. Stick with FX DSLR. Thanks!
It boggles my mind seeing Nikon going so cheap on the port door on all of the Z line. My vintage D750 is so well crafted. Little things but makes one think if they're serious about this anymore. Even the lenses seem just old ones with ftz built into them. Canon atleast is trying to shake things up. Their new Marco is so well thought. Maybe Nikon is trying to move into the affordable space. Bodywise they seem to have.
Your 4K monitor has more than 8 megapixels. A 4K monitor has 3840 x 2160 "pixels", but in monitor terms, each "pixel" consists of R, G, G, B. Hence, a 4K monitor has 33.17 megapixels if we use the camera manufacturers' terminology.
Actually, no. A pixel, or Picture Element, consist of R, G and B samples to make one pixel. It is camera makers who have been lying for over 20 years when they count each fractional R, G or B element as a complete pixel while in fact they're interpolating, extrapolating and over counting them for marketing purposes. SHAM! Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV ok, if you count it that way then a 24 megapixel camera has only 8 real megapixels. Still, I am pretty sure it's ok for web publishing.
@@KenRockwellTV I find it so funny how camera makers need to use how many "dots" a display has because the *pixel* count of the EVFs and even more so the rear screens are so small. I suppose rear screens probably won't really ever need more than 2K/FHD resolution being only about 3 inches in size anyway, but they still aren't in 2021!
Hi Ken, did Nikon make a mistake or I just can't find it. I hate the back dial that changes exposure compensation. I cannot find a way to change the back dial to shutter speed instead. Me or Nikon?
Hi Lucy! What dial does what can vary in different exposure modes. Also see my user guide for how to program those to do what you’d like www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/mirrorless/z7-ii-users-guide.htm#lensring
Possibly, however experience shows that Nikon, like most business, focuses their efforts on developing the next great camera rather than fixing the one they've been selling just fine the past year. It's called "JGE" (just good enough).
Can you make your content inclusive by formatting the auto captioning into closed captioning please? it is extremely hard to watch it relying only on the auto captioning sadly (I'm Profoundly Deaf), hence why I and others don't subscribed.
Absolutely! If UA-cam’s captions don’t meet your needs, I maintain an entirely separate website with far more written details and images expressly created for the hard-of-hearing. The best place for the complete written version of this review is at www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/mirrorless/z7-ii.htm thanks for asking!
For some reason the Japanese seem to be afraid of anything below ISO 100. It’s much worse with point-and-shoots and their tiny sensors. Seems only Apple is smart enough to keep base ISO around 25 on the iPhone to give it cleaner images than many fancy Sony compact cameras!
My issue with Canon is the cost. New Canon mirrorless glass is the most expensive there is. Too rich for my blood. Also, Micro HDMI? C'mon Canon. I know Nikon ergo's are not perfect, but their files are amazing and I can afford the gear.
Never used a Cannon camera, Pentax, (great) 2 Fuji (crap) 1 Lumix (very good) and a few Nikon. Have the Z7 at present but will not upgrade until either the Z9 or possible Z8 appear with some long focus lenses. If not then may try a Cannon.
I lost all my cameras and accessories in a fire. I have had both Canon and Sony products in the past. Sony user interface is not to my liking. The only Canon that competes with this sensor is their R5 that uses an old technology sensor, has a well documented over heating problem and cost about $800 more. So from what I have read, Nikon lenses are top notch and there sensor has the best image available. Every manufacturer has it interface quirks plus I have no other camera lenses that I would no longer be able to use with this Nikon camera. I am not a professional photographer but simply love the hobby. So do you think making this switch to Nikon will be okay.
I way prefer Canon for many reasons. The more you learn, the more you realize sensors are the least important thing. They fixed the overheating problems a year ago with firmware, and that was only for video. I’d never use an Canon EOS R5 for video, it’s too much camera to waste on just video. www.kenrockwell.com/tech/comparisons/nikon-vs-canon-vs-sony-full-frame.htm
Hi Ken, I do understand your view point, as a professional photographer. As a hobbyist I do not want to haul around two devices, one for stills and another for video. The over heating problem for the R5 was improved but not fixed by Canon. If it does over heat you loose about 10 minutes of shooting waiting for the camera to cool down, not good, especially if you are shooting an event. I will thoroughly review your article. Thanks for the response.
Honestly, I prefer my iPhone. All my UA-cam is shot on it. Most of my videos are 40 minute takes and many cameras can’t run over 30. The iPhone focuses faster and handles difficult light much better. Try it, too and thanks!
It is NOT MARK II just II. And do not worry about the old stone age Nikon lenses. If you buy the new Z system you will are willing to invest in the new Z lenses. Those are designed for this system. Otherwise it is like buying a ferrari and put old tires on it.
duuddeee....... I am watching from a 4K monitor!!! I'm dying laughing because I just bought a new computer advertised from HP as 4K and it was a little over $2,000.00 😂😂 I have the Nikon Z50 that shoots in 4K as well so I wanted everything to look the best it can for picture quality, but now you're just translating to me that pixel dumping is a scam! Because they make 4K sound all amazing and omg look at the picture blah blah blah but you're telling us it doesn't even matter at the end of the day? After this and going to Disneyland I'm broke after all these scams and people taking my money with all their fancy words and gimmicks lmao
4K is tough; depending on how you’re viewing UA-cam you may or may not really be seeing 4K from UA-cam. If you are getting it, then 4K on 4K looks great - just that a 4K monitor still only has 8 megapixels. You can’t possibly see all the resolution from a 20MP still image on screen all at once. You still have to zoom in and scroll around. In English, I’m saying that still cameras today have way more resolution than just about anyone will ever actually see, even when printed. Thanks!
For video, HD 1080 looks amazing when shot well. I have an 85” Sony in my theater and watch it from about 10’ away, and 4K doesn’t make much difference. I use a 55” 4K monitor on my desk; I still have to be within a few feet to see all 4K.
Nikon has the best colour science for places and things 100%! , I was excited like us all when this came out and Nikon realised they needed it to be grip capable and two cards , but Im holding off on this Z II series, its still not quite right and at this high price point for consumer level cameras I don't want to hunt in menus for basic things we get buttons for on Nikon's excellent DSLRS making things quicker easier sorry Nikon . Hopefully the Z 9 ticks the right boxes and it better be made in Japan or I'm off to Canon R land .
Another great review, but I’m astonished by so many Canon comments, 99% are totally subjective. If I was watching a Canon video I would not want Nikon comments either...very odd. You use “basic*” JPEGS, not even fine? For sunsets I find iso 64 and highlight metering unbeatable. The Z7 allowed 4 stops of shadow recovery and the Z7ii has to be 6 or more. Yes this sounds like poor technique, but it means an eagle fly past (eg) can effectively be bracketed from the raw image!
Yes! What happens is with the extreme resolution at which I shoot and the close distances and the lighting and the fact that my video camera boosts the exposure in the blacks in close-up, dust that's invisible in person looks horrendous, especially if you're watching in 4K on a 100" monitor! Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV Thanks, by the way, for responding to my pot shot. Indeed, there is a dizzying amount of information to be communicated about operation of the Nikon Z cameras. With appreciation …
I used to think Nikon made a Good Camera. After I owned a D7000, for less than 3 months and 3 trips to Nikon, I started to question that. Now having owned a D850 and the 70-200mm 2.8 F, I know they only make Fecal Matter.
When I switch to mirrorless, it'll be a Canon or a Sony. Nikon is only interested in nerfing their cheap cameras to upsell you. No value, no innovation. Plus all their lenses start to squeak after a few years.
@@sdicosimo6662 Has a Focus success rate of 5%, and that is using it in Focus Priority mode and Single Focus Point, on Stationary Subject. AF tuning-20 thru +20 makes no difference on any lens. Very Noisy Images, even at 100 ISO. Worst DSLR of the 6 I have owned. Nikon has a History of denying they make Defective Cameras, and since I can't ethically sell a Camera I know is Defective to a Pigeon, I will be asking Nikon what Hazardous Materials are in the Camera and Lens, that have to be considered when disposing of it.
@@pjimmbojimmbo1990 People call me a Nikon hater, but even I have to defend Nikon here. You're not using the D850 correctly or don't know what you're talking about.
This is quite possibly the most honest non biased review I’ve ever seen on UA-cam. Straight to the point
Bingo! That’s exactly what I’m trying to do: say it like it is. Thanks for noticing!
100% this. Very negative reviewer

Mad respect for you doing this since ever! Keep on going Mr. Rockwell
Mad thanks for taking the time to write!!! Thank YOU!!!
The most thorough man in the business. I had no idea you had a youtube channel. You translate well from print.
Thanks, but honestly the videos here are almost always abridgments from my written reviews.
Always appreciate your perspective. Keep up the good work, Ken.
Thank you!
I respect the fact that you take time to reply to each and every comment for your videos. Don’t see many do that! Keep it up!
I’m genuinely appreciative that you folks take the time to comment. Thanks!
Of course! I expect my cameras to make money for me for years. I don’t throw them away every few years like TVs and computer printers.
@@RobDTom To each their own. I'm happy with my Z7II.
@@cmduran I agree. No camera is perfect, and if it were, it might cost ten to twelve thousand.
Thanks! Actually audio comes from my studio mics, not iPhone.

Oh well.
That’s why I’m so glad I went Canon back in 2013. Thanks!
What is your opinion on using this camera for professional landscape photography?
It’s fine. As pros know, it’s never about the camera www.kenrockwell.com/tech/notcamera.htm if you want to know what is a pro camera, it’s the one that gets out of the way of making a great photo www.kenrockwell.com/tech/pro-camera.htm
@@KenRockwellTV thanks for responding with the links and information :)
Maddening!
@@KenRockwellTV Well, that sucks, but I guess that all mirrorless cameras inherently do that?
Most. The Sony A7R IV is really bad.

I still like and use my D7200 for commerical work and landscapes. For most applications, with good glass it matches everything this Z7 II does. HIgh ISO and pixel count are sprinkles on a chocolate sundae. Maybe the next Nikon at this level will have a built in flash.
Hallelujah!

Yes!!! ISO 200 is sharper and cleaner than any higher ISO, so if I can use it, I do, which is how I get such detailed night shots that others shooting the easy way at, say ISO 3,200, just can’t get. Thanks!
Have you tried any of the medium format Fujifilm cameras? They go up to 100 megapixels
Yes, see my reviews and sample images at www.kenrockwell.com/fuji/index.htm#gfx I prefer Nikon and Canon's colors for landscapes by a huge margin.

Hi Ken
I'm looking to replace / upgrade my 7dmkii + 6D kit , most of which was lost to major , unprecedented flooding where I live.

Thanks!

Just out of my mind:
- SD Space
- Buffer
- Computer Computational Power needed
- Backup
- Buring onto CDs
- etc...

As a an avid fan of D800s since the day they came out.. Im finally in need to upgrade my favorite!
More for super sharp landscapes and also high res 360 sphericals (just upgraded shaved 10.5 to 8-15mm)
I'm having a really hard time deciding on Z7ii or the d850!
One major issue why I'm swaying towards Z7II is because I have some serious mobility challenges to consider and although Ive very well managed larger bodies and lenses.. age is getting the better of me and trying to cut down on weight.
I just don't want that to be the deciding factor when there are other areas of concern that You've mentioned (especially build outside of Japan because living here i KNOW that Japanese have much higher standards)
All round.. Im sorta just shy of a coin toss..

If weight is important, go Z. SInce autofocus probably doesn’t matter to you but price does, consider the original Z7 which is equally fantastic.
@@KenRockwellTV Thanks man! I wound up going with the z7ii

thanks for the review Ken, I like the camera but I also like the ultra compact cameras that sony is able to make, by the way you say that you make these videos using an iphone but I guess the audio isn't the internal microphone of the iphone, or is it?
See my comments section for the story about my mics and audio. Correct; I’m using a studio mic for the audio.
about sensor protection. nikon decided to protect the shuter instead. the shuter is much more sensitiv and not easyli to clean. maybe there should be an option in the menu to choose how you like it. but maybe nikon counts more waranty cases with broken shuter than dirty sensors.
All my Nikon Mirrorless sensors need cleaning. Never damaged a Nikon shutter in 40 years. Sad that Nikon optimizes the camera to protect themselves from the stupider customers at the expense of people who know how to shoot - another reason I prefer Canon. Thanks.
Thanks Ken, I am shooting with a D850 and am considering mirrorless. Great video

Good review it’s certainly made up my mind.. Thanks Ken
Never said an upgrade. Like boys vs girls or day GS night; totally different camera for different things. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV sorry you misunderstood I did not mean your video apologies
I meant other videos keep using the word upgrade. 👍
Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV Thank you.
The best thing about this video is the link to the Z9 review in the comments!
I don’t do anything with video, but I want that 8K and the integrated vertical grip. And the hot air.
Thanks!
These are great images. I love San Louis Obispo.
Me too! Thanks!!!
Agreed. Nikon’s not innovating as they used to. I suspect they’re operating with a much reduced budget. Thanks!
Agreed.
Yeah, until we debayer and each pixel has full RGB data on it..
Sr Ken a nikon z6 faz praticamente tudo a que a z7ii faz
Very similar
@@KenRockwellTV I love my Z6
A lot of issues with this camera and hope Nikon is watching because most of the issues you pointed out can be fixed through a firmware update.
Possibly, however experience shows that Nikon, like most business, focuses their efforts on developing the next great camera rather than fixing the one they've been selling just fine the past year. It's called "JGE" (just good enough).
What do you think about the new Z9 is just a lot of hype?
Sounds like a very biased question. Are you also providing an answer?
Right now, all it is is hype, just like a unicorn - but we know what a unicorn looks like from all sides, but not so with a Z9 imaginary camera.
@@KenRockwellTV it is at the olympics, so it exists, just like the R3.
Why can't camera companies give us lower ISOs?
For some reason the Japanese seem to be afraid of anything below ISO 100. It’s much worse with point-and-shoots and their tiny sensors. Seems only Apple is smart enough to keep base ISO around 25 on the iPhone to give it cleaner images than many fancy Sony compact cameras!
@@KenRockwellTV even in pull modes would be nice. Would eliminate the need for ND filters.
My issue with Canon is the cost. New Canon mirrorless glass is the most expensive there is. Too rich for my blood. Also, Micro HDMI? C'mon Canon. I know Nikon ergo's are not perfect, but their files are amazing and I can afford the gear.
Thanks, the smart money always goes for lenses, not cameras www.kenrockwell.com/tech/lens-or-camera.htm thanks!
Shooting vertical isn't a "mode."
Modus operandi. Caveat emptor.
All your IPhone cameras were off-shored I'm afraid. My mom lives in Arroyo Grande, so I enjoyed the Pismo and SLO shots. At any rate, cheers!
Thanks!
You really need to know your photography and how to shot in jpeg. All these pictures are great
Thanks! You can do the same editing to JPG files, and I prefer the colors that come right out of the camera as JPGs over the raw file data. Thanks!
Thanks!
Exactly. Thanks!!
basically this camera is a downgrade if you have the D850. got it
Exactly. Thanks!
Hope you returned the camera.
Me too! Thanks!
But an iPhone 15 is still better than them all, right?
For most snapshots and video, usually. Full iPhone review at www.kenrockwell.com/apple/iphone-15-pro-max.htm Thanks!
Thank you for shooting JPG. So tired of the RAW nazis who can’t even take a good photo.
Exactly. Raw is for those who can’t shoot but would rather talk about it. See also www.kenrockwell.com/tech/2-kinds-of-photographers.htm
duuddeee....... I am watching from a 4K monitor!!!
I'm dying laughing because I just bought a new computer advertised from HP as 4K and it was a little over $2,000.00 😂😂
I have the Nikon Z50 that shoots in 4K as well so I wanted everything to look the best it can for picture quality, but now you're just translating to me that pixel dumping is a scam!
@@KenRockwellTV Makes sense! Thanks Ken! You da man!
I wouldn’t wait for Nikon to catch up when you realize that Canon is ahead, and moving forward with at least as much speed as Nikon. Thanks!
Mirrorless cameras are a complete reset from DSLRs so it’s important to cover all the competitive brands everyone is considering. Thanks!
Pig latin? Is that necesaary? I love your reviews but this...nope.
You’d have to ask Nikon. I guess they’re embracing inclusion. Thanks!
Analyse high end camera… and never use raw format?…. Does not need a high end camera, near a 100mb camera for ytube!!! 😂
Easy and simple yet simple easy use of a free tool that allows me more and less to get you in a while or more money 💴 and you need a new card. Thanks!
4:14 sold bye m50
Thanks!
Can they make them anymore ugly ? Same design team as the DF me thinks....
Oh, don’t push them; I’m sure they can! Thanks!
Your dusty EVF is triggering my OCD.
Yes! What happens is with the extreme resolution at which I shoot and the close distances and the lighting and the fact that my video camera boosts the exposure in the blacks in close-up, dust that's invisible in person looks horrendous, especially if you're watching in 4K on a 100" monitor! Thanks!
My head spinneth ...
If I’m too fast, hit gear or settings and then set playback speed to 0.5 or 0.75x. Ahhhh!
The d850 is literally one of if not the best DSLRs ever made. Idk what crack you're smoking to reach that conclusion.

Has a Focus success rate of 5%, and that is using it in Focus Priority mode and Single Focus Point, on Stationary Subject.
No, the D850 is the best Dslr, I have a great keeper rate with mine shooting wildlife. Maybe you got a lemon.
@@pjimmbojimmbo1990 People call me a Nikon hater, but even I have to defend Nikon here. You're not using the D850 correctly or don't know what you're talking about.
