The Invisible Divine
Kirtaniye…A festival of Women’s Voices in Gurbani Sangeet
17th January 2020, C D Deshmukh Auditorium India International Centre, New Delhi
When Sri Guru Nanak Devji founded the Sikh faith more than five hundred years ago he essentially sought a more humane direction for the subcontinent exhausted by continuous warfare.
Today, as we navigate a world brimming over with strife and hatred perhaps it is time once again to reclaim that space of equality, peace, and compassion as envisioned by him centuries ago to seek healing and refuge for all of humanity.
To celebrate Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji's message of ‘Ik Onkār’ there is but one God, his five hundred and fiftieth birth anniversary and the intangible secular spirit of our national identity, eminent women vocalists from different regions of India, representing different faiths, languages, and cultures sang verses written by Bhakti and Sufi saints like Kabir, Farid and Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji himself, in Pushto, Braj Bhasha, Hindi and Punjabi which form an integral part of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji.
These verses from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji are an inextricable part of our collective cultural legacy and not restricted to any one religion or region in their universal appeal
.
Why women singers? Essentially because Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji was unequivocal in his support for gender equality. “Without women, there would be no one at all so why to call her bad from whom the great are born,” he wrote and sang, so what better way there could be of celebrating his legacy!
Mrs. Gursharan Kaur and Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan formally inaugurated the festival and felicitated all the singers and partners BindhuMalini, Bengaluru, Sayeeda Begum from Shakote, Dr. Nivedita Singh from Patiala, Jasleen Kaur Monga from Delhi and Bibi Jaswant Kaur’s Dhadhi Jatha held the discerning audience spellbound!
It is our humble endeavour to share this ‘Amrit’ with the Sangat by uploading the sabads on UA-cam
.
Kirtan is an important part of Sikhism.

It was a beautiful exposition of a rare Raag Tukhari by Vidushi Dr. Nivedita Singh. Her skills didn't mask the essence of Gurbani nor its words as her diction was crystal clear. A short Tilang composition was equally effective. The whole performance was very suitably suppoted by her student and the Dilruba and Tabla players. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Gurbux Singh thanks for the words of encouragement 🙏
