Any video with Hannes Wessels is great. Every video with Al Venter is fantastic. I'm not gonna play the lottery tonight. Lighting never strikes in the same place twice and, having both Hannes AND Al in the same video is..... let's just say that it doesn't get any better than that. Two most remarkable men. What a bonanza!
What a great chat! Al and his reporting was part of my youth, and i've always tried to keep up with whatever he's up to. Very astute! Thanks gentlemen!
Yes Hannes, PK was greatly loved by the troops. He once came out to see us TF guys during our first continuous deployment l think at Nyala siding. Got out the chopper, camo shirt, khaki shorts & vellies (not sure if he was even wearing socks). Yes the type of guy that you were willing to follow
There is still lots more that need to be said, dont take it to your grave guys. Only 1 or 2 things that was not old news. The West is weak, they are only good in the movies. The Russians need money, the time will come when Rhodesia and South Africa of old will be missed as we were not on the level of brutality of the current 'visitors' of the African countries.
I came across Al Venter in Oshikati in 1979/80 and he managed to get into the ops room. Brigadier Badenhorst was so pissed off that security to the ops room was so tightened up it made my job as Skakkel officer for 51 Battalion at Ruacanna a pain in the arse
@@hennies9509 hi hennie one story was they had plenty of horses weapon ammo food but someone forgot about razors so after a while they all had long beards and hair it brought back memories after Mr venter was talking about Tanganika all the best 👍
Fantastic interview, thanks Al, Hannes and crew. A big thank you and my respect to Al for the unbiased reporting telling things the way they are. God Bless Keep well always.
Why do Rhodesians always try to compare themselves with the Portuguese, like in this interview. We in Spain have a saying. “Las comparaciones son odiosas.” The Portuguese were fighting three wars simultaneously thousands of miles from home in territories much bigger then Rhodesia, yet they performed extremely well. Rhodesians were defending their home. The Portuguese never attempted cross border hot pursuit ops like the Rhodesians. They however did one single operation to free Portuguese soldiers held captive in Conakry in September 1970. 200 or so Portuguese marines raided the capital of Guinea and successfully freed all prisioners. That proved that if they wanted they could easily do what Rhodesians did. But that wasn’t Lisbon policies. Finally. The commander in chief of NATO forces in Afghanistan, a British general, considered his Portuguese Light brigade as his heros. I thank his name is David Richards. Al Venter too was impressed by the Portuguese performance in C.A.R. He said so in a recent interview. Rhodesians were fantastic no doubts about that. The Portuguese still are. Comandos, pára-quedistas, fuzileiros it doesn’t matter. They have been in Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan. They are in Mali and CAR. Still doing very well too.
I still have the downloaded 5 Episode piece of Al Covering the bushwar from the net, and its quite something!, so to see him still gaaning aan is awesome to see! enjoyed this episode very much and the part with the spy..good quick thinking on the slanting your body to hide the sidearm part.
Listening to this interview one has a sense of the dark forces weighed against us. Politics in Africa began to stink from the early sixties onward, so there was no place for a White government, like Smith's; but it was exactly what was needed. Not to be, though, not to be.
the ivory poaching gang was fletcher from Chinhoyi. it was investigated. after all his work, the mafia took the ivory and failed to pay him so it was waste of time, sweat and bullets. I know the investigating officer.
I always used Takataka as the Swahili word for rubbish or for anything of poor quality - when I was a boy in Tanganyika int the 50's. I suppose the word sounds like a machine gun.
Great interview ,look up the story of the Phelendaba nuclear weapons and the involvement of Ex uk PM David Cameron which involved Dr David Kelly ( WMD) who was suicided and the involvement of a Rhodesian guy , a very murky story , I think one nuclear weapon went missing, anyway a very revealing story
I came to SA as a refugee from LM, Mozambique. Please do a talk about Moz.
I'm fascinated by this interview.
At least another ten episodes please!!!! I could talk to him for months!!
Absolutely fascinating chat, please come back for more Al. Thanks
One of the most interesting interviews.... Just unreal how much we didn't know .... and still so much to learn about.
Fascinating interview that, once again, I thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks very much Al, Hannes and John. Respect!
Fascinating last few minutes given current events in Central and West Africa
Two epic warriors. Thank you so much for this discussion and these insights of the times of my youth.

Great interview with an absolute legend.
Venter confirms that Russia is - and always has been - behind a lot of dirty business in Africa.

Portugal had a bigger budget and more men perhaps

Is this the series from 78/79 - if so do you have a link please?
Incredibly interesting chat
You should have asked Venter what his favourite cinematic rendition of a journalist is.
Very informative and quite disturbing at all the shenanigans.

Very interesting. How can one buy the book in US?
I believe it's available on Amazon
I think that if Al was to faithfully record his life stories the books would look like a set of encyclopedias, such is the vastness of his experiences
