"First attempt playing in the world of lethal voltage, I didn't die." That's what all ghosts say when they're haunting. I prefer the "Bailey". It's bright, it's "ultra boutique" rare, but we're gonna have to clear the ectoplasmic manifestation in the solder joints.
Hey Landon (Grande Prairie Alberta guy up in the north here) I'm considering building one like that... after all the tube-amp tech's are somewhat rare these days, building one might help me be a better tech with my current tube amps.
For that static, with the chassis out of the amp but still plugged in, turn it on and tap on the solder joints with a wooden chopstick (or similar object) and listen for any pops. Another thing it could be is the speaker cable itself could have a cold solder joint either in the jack or where it's soldered to the speaker. *edit - I like to use a looper pedal to send a signal through the amp while I tap with the chopstick.
That scratchy noise would drive me nuts. Somebody already mentioned it in the comments, but ask Brad the Guitologist or Psionic Audio www.youtube.com/@PsionicAudio www.youtube.com/@TheGuitologist
If it's just certain notes, I would guess it's probably a resonance causing something in the chassis or cabinet to rattle only at that note. Check that everything is mounted to the board real good like. Transformers, jacks, cab bracing, tube sockets, blar blar blar. *edit: Now that I hear it I think you just have a problem speaker, son. *edit edit: now that I hear it doing that on just the reverb trail I wonder if you have a cold solder in there. Look for a solder joint that isn't shiny, canadaman. Even almost sounds like it could be a bad lead on the way to mister reverb tank or somethingk.
Lots to like about the tones you get here (excepting that rattle) with both amps, the main differences being the speakers used. Have to love an amp that is so good with pedals and delivers vintage clarity.
I was wondering if the difference in speaker made the difference for the chimey highs I have a similar amp with a Jensen P12R and have wondered what a blue box would sound, but that’s an expensive mod! If I got the results similar to this video I think I’d be disappointed!
Both amps sound good.Glad too see you useing the Radial switching unit. I'm a big fan of that company and have used a few of their products. You should be proud of that amp you built. Great job for1st time.
I liked the hardwired sound better if you could get rid of the scratchiness. I think yours sounded more like the traditional scooped Fender vibe I typically expect.
@@honkytonkinson9787 yeah, speakers make a big difference. I'll have to watch the video again more closely, didn't realize there was an 'odd' speaker in the RI
@@ruffryder13 my words aren’t working today. I meant to mention the Celestion speaker. I’ve heard of people putting the creamback in a Princeton, but not the blue one so much
@@ruffryder13 I have a G10 creamback in a Marshall amp. It seems to do the Jensen alnico sound minus the paper crunchy sound. I’d heard the blue was similar but with more bass end; maybe a fender amp doesn’t need more bass response
If the crackle is not the candy wrapper stuck to your E string, I believe the soldering will be the most likely culprit. Best wishes and please let us know when you have it sussed. Cheers/ Slainte 🎸👨🏼⚕️🫶✌️♾️
Please do a video of finding the bad solder (time-lapse of course). I don't know if it's just the speaker, but your hand-wired amp was head and shoulders better than the factory amp.
Could be interesting to play then with the speaker jack connected to each other amps to see if they really sound the same with the same speaker. I prefer the Bailey too. More mids.
Congratulations!! Wow, you are dang right to be proud of yourself. Hope you get the noise issue sorted. I have been told that the Eminence Ragin Cajun works well with the Princeton Reverb. Might that be something on the horizon or will you be sticking with the Jensen? Some day when I can have dedicated speakers for different genres, I'll buy the Tornado Stealth again. But that's another story!)
Not that PCB amps sound bad because they can sounds great, like Fuchs for example. i think they sound great. But in general, yes hand wired is better. But is it really better or just different, and which tool is right for the job.
I’m betting it’s a component or the rectifier tube? It sounds great though. I’d take it to someone. Great job building that amp. That stuff is not the easiest. I’ve had quite a few amps that crackled and picked up outer space signals. Both amps sound great to me.
I would check the low pass cap in the tone stack. Sounds like its leaking, or loose. Check for loose solder joints, bad cap. We know the tone will vary between the two, plus, different speakers. Also, bad pot? New don't mean good. 😊
You built a great amp. Much prefered over the Fender. Like most of the others, I think the rattle is a poor solder responding to the bass vibration. The reverb tank spectre is a poser.
Hey Landon regarding the scratchy sound, i recently watched some videos on fender amp repairs from a guy called PsionicAudio here on youtube, he's like the guru on vintage tube amps i watched a bunch and one was about the reverb tanks, i think your scratchy sound maybe that, check his youtube channel out he has tons of great videos im sure that will help you resolve it, hope you get it sorted if you haven't already
Hard to say anything meaningful about the differences. Drastically different speaker is going to make a significantly different sound. Can you run the amps through its neighbor's speaker to make it more apples to apples?
The 12" Celestion Blue is the biggest difference between the amps imo. The Celestion is warmer and bigger sounding to my ears a good 12" speaker will almost always sound warmer bigger than a 10". Not the best comparison. Besides being a bigger speaker, I believe the Celestion Blue is the better speaker too, much better than the Jenson.
@@landonbailey I think the best comparisons would be same size speaker combos, same wattage too. But as long as people asked,... good of you to do it,...
Run both amps thru a separate cab. Try different speakers like a greenback, blue and v30. My band mate has a hand wired Princeton with a 10” gold. It sounds shrill at drummer volumes. He runs it thru a 4x12 cab and problem solved.
Capacitor plus minus correct??? And the wires looks not clean enough to me.... Solder points must be sparkling... Not matt.... Amp Isn't enjoyable like this.... Good luck... If you have 0 expirience you shouldn't do this projects my opinion.... I done a Hifi tube amp before. silver lead I used for example...... And iam a technician....
