"That thing was no fucking boat"... My very thought when Amy started talking about the delayed recovery. 'There's no way I'd want to spend 2 days in that thing at sea, toss like a cork!'... As always, nice video Amy, thank you.
"That thing was no fucking boat" - that statement just increased my already immense admiration for Jim Lovell - a space pioneer, great American, gentleman, and just a good down-to-earth kind of guy! Thanks Amy - I really enjoy your UA-cam videos!!
He's a Navy man alright. Yeah I'm biased Navy since I served for 8 years. Of course they were fly boys, and I was in the bowels of the ship in the plants. I'm glad the program accepted as many Navy guys as they did and didn't become an Air Force only club.
Great stuff and I can only imagine Lovell's surprise in finding out that Amy knew her stuff. His candor was clearly a sign of respect. Deserved respect.
So I watch a video not on this platform that showed an interview with a man that was in charge of retrieving from the water, the so-called rocket or module, and he said they were not maned and they never showed the astronauts coming out of it from the water onto a boat for a reason
I not only appreciate your knowledge, and the history you've share, but the appreciation you've shown our astronauts. As always, thank you so very much for the video.
Amy, your work is amazing. Thank you. And Jim Lovell is one of my favourite astronauts. He's got such a great sense of humour, yet an immediate and razor-sharp focus on any tasks at hand. It's wonderful that you got to meet him. I'm very envious.
This is FASCINATING. While I have solid mental imagery of a capsule getting met at sea, I had never considered that it had to be upright and stable - potentially in horrible weather - for a couple of days. Thanks!
You have to appreciate the depth of feeling that, even after more than forty years, made a gentleman of that era willing to include the f-word into a comment made to a lady.
Amy, Mr. Lovell's surprise at your knowledge of the space program was the same pleasant surprise many of us share when finding your videos! Your passion for all things space travel is really amazing! I've learned more about the space program from you in the last year or two than in a life time! Thank you for your efforts! The quote was classic Lovell! Thank you again for your efforts and for sharing your knowledge!
When I was a kid, we used to watch the SEALs train on recovering the Apollo capsule in San Diego Bay. One day they really blew it and the capsule ended up floating into our backyard in Navy housing on the Amphibious Base. My neighbor and I immediately went and climbed around on it. We were about 12 at the time. 😁
Great story. And I love the inclusion of the story at the end. I've missed you. UA-cam hasn't shown up with your last 4 vids. Now I can binge some more.
Thanks Amy & Pete! I am so happy when your videos drop. Always informative and wonderfully presented. The quote from Captain Lovell made this old sailor's day.🤣
Jim Lovell is one of my favourite’s and all time greats. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to have a conversation with him. You’re quite lucky. Cheers.
I have to say, I’d never considered the “floatability” of the command module -until now 😄 Fascinating and superbly-researched content as always & 11/10 for presentation thanks to the bonus Pete at the end!
Amy seemed to have to work herself up to saying:"fucking boat"! She said that word somewhat softly! Great video as always. I'm very proud that she's a fellow Canadian!
Great video Amy. I miss these types of things and truly enjoy when you take us “back stage” in the space program. I really enjoyed your first book and your second one is on my list to get. Cheers from Moose Jaw Tim
I was wondering, "was that her cat or mine?" Brilliant as usual, and always worthwhile to listen and watch to the end, but speshly when there's a spicy Southern candid quote!
Fantastic video! Gotta love Jim Lovell. What a fun and lively guy! Also, I really appreciate you following the etiquette of introducing the cat to us after his editorializing. :-)
Some rafts on ships have everything to extra room in another with 4 season tent with vestibule connecting it to others. A sea anchor can make up for poor sea-keeping., you can change and maintain facing relative to the Sun or wind or wave direction. You can make some useful effort at either moving with or resisting being carried by the current or wind.
Kudos! What a great point and observation! I never even thought about this. Thank you for a great learning video 50 years after the almighty Apollo missions!
I had to purchase the audiobook "Breaking the Chains of Gravity". I listened to it a few years ago before the Pandemic while driving in my car back and forth to work. It was a very nice piece of Lunar history, and a nice contribution to our NASA library. Thank you for all your hard work over the years as well. From a long time channel follower.
Thanks Amy for another great video, as always very informative although too short. It was kind of unexpected to hear you say that word, I think I’ve watched all your video’s and never heard it from you. It was a surprise and sounded so cute with that Canadian accent, keep up the great work.
Jim Lovell was always my mom’s favorite astronaut. I remember her saying that during both Apollo missions and probably during his Gemini missions. She just thought he was the nicest guy. We watched all the launches. I was between 5 and 9 so only vaguely remember the Geminis. Interesting to hear what Jim said about the command module bobbing in the water. I can believe he said that. He was classy but he was no prude. It’s sort of battle conditions so things like that get said. Great video.
Hi Pete! Tiger (who could be your twin) also says hi! Very interesting video that, once again, brings to light an unknown aspect about the space program. Take care, y'all.
I loved the comment by Mr. Lovell. He was one of my favorite astronauts back in the day, and I'm old enough to remember watching John Glenn's orbital mission.
"That thing was no fucking boat"... My very thought when Amy started talking about the delayed recovery. 'There's no way I'd want to spend 2 days in that thing at sea, toss like a cork!'...
As always, nice video Amy, thank you.
Fry: "How many atmospheres can the ship withstand?"
Farnsworth: "Well, it's a spaceship; so I'd say anywhere between 0 and 1."
That's one of my favorite lines.
Well done sir
Great nyyeews everyone!
@@Nghilifa, quick! Abandon ship! Farnsworth just said "The Words" -- disaster to follow!
Isn't it built to visit planets other than Earth though? Assuming that Earth's atmosphere is the thickest would be an odd decision.
"That thing was no fucking boat" - that statement just increased my already immense admiration for Jim Lovell - a space pioneer, great American, gentleman, and just a good down-to-earth kind of guy!
Thanks Amy - I really enjoy your UA-cam videos!!
Absolutely!
I love how he leaned closer to curse quietly in public too, great manners, as you say a Gentleman.
Wow! "it's no fuckin boat!" It's these hidden details that really bring perspective to things. Thanks Amy!
Something history would have lost forever had it not been for this.
The Soyuz is even worse. The one time it splashed down it almost killed the entire crew. It floated stably with both hatches submerged.
He's a Navy man alright. Yeah I'm biased Navy since I served for 8 years. Of course they were fly boys, and I was in the bowels of the ship in the plants. I'm glad the program accepted as many Navy guys as they did and didn't become an Air Force only club.
Leave it to J. Lovell, never held back !!
Boy I needed that.
I literally LOLed at the "no fuckin' boat" quote! Fun one, Amy.
I almost spat out my drink. Even though Mr. Lovell is just human like the rest of us, it's just so weird imagining him cursing 🤣🤣
RickyboyH He was a sailor after all…
@@coyotehater, of course he cussed like a sailor -- after all, once a squid, always a squid!
Navy man!
Always fun to get these bits of largely untold history from you. The story from Lovell made it just that much better. Keep it up.
Yes, it's great that all these details are captured and shared before they disappear. Great video!
Pete is never a problem on your videos!! His “commentary” is most welcome. ;-)
Need more Pete videos in the future!
Thank you so much for everything you are doing young lady ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Great stuff and I can only imagine Lovell's surprise in finding out that Amy knew her stuff. His candor was clearly a sign of respect. Deserved respect.
OMG, I am literally in tears laughing. And you got Lovell talking like a sailor, not an Ambassador for the Space Program™, So amazing!
Splendid information. I miss your content like this Amy. Hopefully you’ll be back here one day. 🚀
Pete's commentary at 1:53 is spot on. Always love your videos. Thank You Amy! And Pete.
"Where is my food, human slave?" :-)

Jim Lovell's critique of the CM on the water. LOL Nice one!
So much information in a small space of time is refreshing on UA-cam where the opposite is often the norm. Always quality on this Channel.
So much cool info. Pete's bonus commentary is the best. He deserves ear scritches for his contribution.
Love hearing what Pete has to say too. Please don’t ever edit his comments out. :-)
This is FASCINATING. While I have solid mental imagery of a capsule getting met at sea, I had never considered that it had to be upright and stable - potentially in horrible weather - for a couple of days. Thanks!
Thank you for not censoring that. Adds a touch of realism and humanity to these astronauts that we don't often get to see. :-)
Always enjoy Pete's commentary! And a great moment with Jim Lovell indeed! I laughed out loud!
LOL! I *LOVE* that quote! A man that tells it how it is and doesn't pull his punches. In this day and age that's AWESOME!!! Thanks for sharing. :-)
I like what jim said about it, "that thing is no fucking boat"
That got a solid chuckle out of me too. Man, that test had to be MISERABLE.
You have to appreciate the depth of feeling that, even after more than forty years, made a gentleman of that era willing to include the f-word into a comment made to a lady.
hearing you swear just made this my favorite video love all your videos amy
Awesome you made laugh on Jim's comment about the boat. Love your videos. Tks
Pete meows at 1:52! Give him a treat, Amy!
😻
“The crew had been a little uncomfortable at times”. Means they were puking their guts out most of the time.
I imagine it was like being in a bobber in those 12 ft seas.
Always a pleasure to spend time with you to learn new and exciting things!!!

Haha! That has to represent the apogee of golden childhood memories. How long till grown ups came and spoiled the fun?
@@mortified776 A surprisingly long time...maybe 20 minutes. It was awesome! 😎

Amy - Thank you for all you do to preserve and share this history. I grew up in the Mercury - Apollo era and your videos are awesome. Keep it up!
The Lovell story was awesome and well done! Bravo
Thanks Amy & Pete!
I am so happy when your videos drop. Always informative and wonderfully presented. The quote from Captain Lovell made this old sailor's day.🤣
OMG, where would history be without you Amy!
Statements from the true expert (Pete), are always welcome in your blog.
LMAO! I can hear Jim Lovel say that the capsule was not a F>>> boat. Way to funny.
"... that thing was no fuckin boat."
Such a wonderful line, and what a beautiful piece of history you're now part of!
Amy, Yes that was Captain Lovell USN pilot.
Great video! Love the little-known history, thanks Amy!

EXCELLENT video. I LOVE the Apollo era and every bit of info connected with it. Thank you for this.
Hahahahaha I love Lovel's response. Thank you for sharing that!
I love hearing about this kind of stuff and your anecdote with Jim Lovell at the end there was perfect

At 1:52, I liked the audio cameo appearance of Pete. 😸
Say hello to him from all his fans!
Lovely video Amy! You must have very much enjoyed Jim's reaction as he realized the knowledge you had of his "boat ride"!
Thank you, Amy. I love these small but very important footnotes.

I love Lovell's comment!!! I'm trying to eat and watch your show, and I nearly spit out my food! :D
Another great behind the scenes story.... thanks Amy
8:20 lmao Jim Lovell is very funny. Thank you for this Amy.
My father in law was serving on the USS Hornet when it recovered Apollo 11 & 12 and the astronauts and took photos we have to this day.
Keep up the great work. Very informative and entertaining. Beautiful 😍, intelligent, and classy. Wish more woman 👩 were like you now in days.
This was a great story Amy, make sure it goes into your next book!
That Jim Lovell quote just made my day. One of my heroes! Thank you, Amy!
Pete has important insight, I want to hear it!
I love the "it's no fuckin boat!". Often it's the human side of these things that get forgotten. Oh all hail Pete. He was just adding some commentary.
Love both of your books, and looking forward to your next one!

"I'm on a boat!
I'm on a boat!
Take a good hard look at the mother fucking boat!"

As always, you provide great content, Amy! Love watching your shows to learn a little bit more of what wasn't in my history books!
Thanks, Amy great info on something we really had not heard anything about before!
Missed your videos, glad to see your notifications are still working!

I actually opened the door at 12 seconds because I thought our cat was miauwing and trying to get in… 😂
Cool beans! Great video as always!!
Also, is it just me or did it sound like Pete wanted to do his own VO segment at one point lol
I enjoyed this video, especially the Jim Lovell story!! Nice work!! Cheers!! 🤓
Great video! And we can never get enough of Pete!
What a fantastic video! Thank you for doing all your videos, Amy. Great job!
