Leading the Way: Responding to the Evolving Needs of Our Community.
At Northampton Police Department we are working hard to address the evolving needs of the community. To strengthen trust, we were the first in the Commonwealth to participate in the Police Data Initiative. We also started a police card program to engage with youth. To address the opioid epidemic, we started carrying Narcan and piloted the DART program that provides a post-overdose responses to individuals struggling with addiction. We’re changing the stigma about addiction in our department and in the community. To better respond to people in crisis we have enhanced mental health training with an emphasis on verbal de-escalation, collaborate with local service providers to access resources, and support a Peer Support Team for our own officers.
