This is just superb, I have been researching "natural organic gardening" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Nonannah Hanulian Future - (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my buddy got excellent results with it.
Just placed first order, fall crops, along with Rusted Garden coffee mug. Can't wait for them to arrive. Garden readied this morning with Gary's techniques here.
I try to buy seeds local, they work for the guy across town, they should work for me. My Zinnia's sprouted in two days. We had bookoo rain & everything's coming up. I might buy a special seed to gamble with sometimes, try Chinese Okra, but only if you have a lot of space for it.
Thanks for being so simple and straightforward with explaining and planting! The way you presented looks so easier and not overwhelming for starters like me! You are in your element. ♥️

Gary, I just wish to take a moment to say thanks for doing such a wonderful job. I was ignorant about farming but thanks to u, I am doing well with my back yard gardening. U have no idea what it means to me when u take the time to respond to my individual needs. Thank you. I know this all seems so basic to so many people. I bought my first property at over 40 years old. I lived in apartments, town houses and lofts my whole life. I want to grow my own vegetables in summer. I really have no idea what I am doing and live in the North East. It's a short growing season. I have everything I need to start seeds in March, and am looking to prepare a 10x20 foot area. Thank you for the video.

Hi Gary, Well how lucky is that son of yours? ;) Great video, especially for those of us starting to garden. I actually garden for years but ornamentals, now starting with edibles. I wish I had been doing both all along, by now I would have beds with wonderful soft loamy and fertile soil instead of clay and rocky soil, better late than never. Thank you, much appreciated!!

You're very knowledgeable with this! When you were talking about putting the taller plants in the back so they don't block the sunlight from the lower plants, I was like wow, I never would've thought of that. And to track the path of the sun to determine where the best area is for your plants to get optimal sunlight, dude you know what you're talking about! I gave a thumbs up so I can revert back to this when I start my garden! Nice work!👌

Really enjoyed the video Gary - and my garden of virgin soil is doing so well after using all your information from your videos- I'm so pleased. I thought I could never grow veggies indoors from seed and plant them out and see it all through, but it really works!!! It is really nice to go out into the garden several times a day to see what's happening - it is constantly changing. And the beneficial insects are attracted to the herbs and flowering squashes and tomatoes and peppers. Lost two squash plants, I think one to a borer and the other to squash bugs, the little devils, but was lucky to find them and their eggs and get rid of them. Thanks so much for all you do and hope your summer goes very well in your gardens. (I am wondering how your "winning" tomato plant is coming along).

Thank you!! I haven’t gardened for years (5-8). I used to just plant and go... no thought whatsoever to soil quality or bugs. Luckily I’ve only killed 2 plants over the years (20). I’m in CA’s Central Valley. I have more free time now, a huge yard, and two boxes built. I want to be self sufficient so this time I’m learning everything I can. I love your series... a happy accident.

I got my transplants cheaper, I have a few Amish Greenhouses paid 1.75. Price reduce. Using oregano, cilantro, Italian Parsley as animals an bugs stay away. Anything pungent. For Deer, chop up Irish Spring soap, zip lock sandwich bags w/ small holes, so the scent gets out. Deer have sensitive noses.
V S I think there is a certain plant that deers avoid, I don’t know what it is called, but it looks like leaves, it’s a pale greenish grey and it has a soft texture

Hey Gary! I used this video for reference to plant my first vegetable garden in a few raised beds about a week ago. I’m now noticing holes in the leaves of my plants and a few caterpillars walking around. What is the most effective way to get rid of these guys and protect my plants?
Thanks so much. I use neem oil. I have a lot of videos on it. Just search neem. You want to make sure you get it with all the components not a hydrophobic extract of neem. I do sell it at my shop but watch the videos to understand it. Good luck. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
A wonderful video as always, Gary! Do you think you'll ever do a video on how to work with/fix clay-heavy soil? I had some beds put in over the winter and in spite of requesting a fill of 50/50 dirt and composted manure, what I got was filled-to-the-brim Kentucky clay, right out of the ground and absolutely full of grass and weed seeds. It's been a nightmare and there's been no room to really turn in any compost this year, it turns into rock when it dries and doesn't hold moisture worth a damn (cracks like a desert in the sun and strangles the roots, yet turns completely unworkable when wet). I've worked some peat moss and worm castings into the immediate areas of the plants in the hope that they'll have something of a better life and that the clay will start to break down, but a video on how to really amend it into something usable would be amazing!
ToastAndJellyfish That is *exactly* my situation too! Except it's Oklahoma clay. Total rip off. Just like yours, there's no room for amendments, so I have accumulated a big pile in the middle of my yard from what I've scooped out to make room for organic matter and transplants. What a nightmare beginning this has been. But we growers are nothing if not tenacious! A piece of advice I got from Matt Powers, permaculture guy, is to use a broad fork or pitchfork to aerate it (mine was smelling faintly like an old dumpster at the bottom 6" or so, and I was getting sinkholes, of all things!) and keep applying compost tea or even a compost slurry to promote the beneficial microorganisms and get some organic matter down in the bottom without having to shovel half of it out first, or wait until fall to do a daikon cover crop. I've got almost all 256sq/ft forked now and I'm going to do the slurry tomorrow, followed by aerated compost tea this weekend. It seems to be working! The plants I've forked around have perked up and even started to grow larger. Leaves are getting a darker green, too. I'm hopeful! I also invested in the Deluxe Pro Kit from Boogie Brew, and have worked in 60lbs of rock dust, 20lbs of the rainbow bloom something or other and I'm applying mycorrhizae to the transplants going forward. Boy does that stuff work! I dug up the 3 sweet potatoes I had planted in-ground 2 days earlier to work some compost into the soil and loosen it a bit more, and the little plugs suddenly had roots over a foot long! I couldn't believe it. I'm really liking these products so far, and the science seems sound, although I am by no means a soilologist. I really hope at least some of this is helpful to you! If nothing else, do try forking followed by the slurry. Good luck!! 👍
make sure to mulch your garden bed, for example layer your grass clippings on it. It will help organic matter to break up into it and develop the soil. I've been working with clay for a couple seasons and have been adding grass clippings, wood chips (chipped wood from cutting out apple trees), and a sprinking of compost from my pile. The soil is doing nicely this season. I just use a bit of bagged soil in the spots where I plant and my amended soil, every season it is getting better and better at retaining moisture.
If you are going to live there for a long time, I would put wood chips down in a future garden area and let it work its way down to fix the soil. Here is a vid from another credible gardener who shows what wood chips did in his garden after 8 years. ua-cam.com/video/YCtafUgoCX0/v-deo.html Consider documenting your progress and sharing it via youtube. Good luck!
I would do as mention. Cut grass and let it dry brown. Use lots of it for mulching. At the end of the season mix in any compost you made, dried grass and just get organic matter in there. Mine was all clay. Slowly but surely I changed it over. And yes amend the planting holes and that will get you buy.
Setting up my first garden ever, lots to learn. Thank you for doing this video it answered so many of my questions and also it assured me that I can do it and on the right track.

Hey. I’m clearing out part of my messy garden, since we moved in it was covered in weeds and rubbish. Is it a good idea to take the time to pick out all the smaller parts of dandelion roots? Even if they are deep under and will take time to sprout above ground, will the growing roots damage my plants?
Dandelion roots won't damage your other plants but they will compete for water and nutrients. It may be best to wait for them to emerge them pull them. It'll be easier to find the roots then.

There was a video I ran across that showed that the plants that we grow are mostly Man created. He also explained in the video that it is difficult to grow them because they come from parent plants that are pampered. And if you try to put them in a different situation where they're not as pampered they don't do very well. I now understand why is difficult to grow some vegetable plants. Keep up the good work

I bought seeds twice from you and you are very generous with your seeds, they germinate fast that's why i love them. Thanks, Gary. Great video!!!
That's my goal! Thanks for the purchase. Seeds don't need to make us poor.
This is just superb, I have been researching "natural organic gardening" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Nonannah Hanulian Future - (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my buddy got excellent results with it.
I agree Sher. The seeds Gary sells are very viable.
Remarkably therapeutic to watch someone teach and demonstrate with so much passion
Appreciated.

Gary, I just wish to take a moment to say thanks for doing such a wonderful job.
I was ignorant about farming but thanks to u, I am doing well with my back yard gardening.
U have no idea what it means to me when u take the time to respond to my individual needs. I also respect u for taking the time to research in order to facilitate even the most unexpected and specific needs expressed.
Keep up the good work and stay safe.

Hi Gary, Well how lucky is that son of yours? ;) Great video, especially for those of us starting to garden. I actually garden for years but ornamentals, now starting with edibles. Outstanding. Good luck this year.
Nice work!👌
Thanks so much. I figure ill put out what I know. I enjoy it!

Excellent! I love success stories. It is taking off. So I think the contest is on!

I always have a terrible time trying to start herb seeds. I haven't tried direct sowing, though. I just always cave in and buy the transplants.
Yeah if you do the over seeding method like I did, plenty germinate.

Using oregano, cilantro, Italian Parsley as animals an bugs stay away. Anything pungent.
For Deer, chop up Irish Spring soap, zip lock sandwich bags w/ small holes, so the scent gets out. Deer have sensitive noses.
Thanks

Good luck.

Here is a vid from another credible gardener who shows what wood chips did in his garden after 8 years. ua-cam.com/video/YCtafUgoCX0/v-deo.html
Consider documenting your progress and sharing it via youtube.

You can for sure do it. Good luck.

Could you use a tiller, when starting?
I can actually feel your passion into gardening
Hi, I have some ideas for a small garden. But it gets less sunlight. It's a shady are.
I just started my backyard vegetable gardening and looking for ideas in taking care of plant..and i see this video so i think this is very heplful
I started some tomatoes from seed and I have 4 growing in the same cup. Is it ok to have more than one tomato growing together in the same space?
Not to maturity but for seed starts. For mature growth just 1 per hole.

Thank you very much we are preparing to create a vegetable garden in France this summer.
Hey. I’m clearing out part of my messy garden, since we moved in it was covered in weeds and rubbish. Is it a good idea to take the time to pick out all the smaller parts of dandelion roots? Even if they are deep under and will take time to sprout above ground, will the growing roots damage my plants?
I'm not sure if it will ruin the other plants but dandelion roots are eatable
Dandelion roots won't damage your other plants but they will compete for water and nutrients. It may be best to wait for them to emerge them pull them. It'll be easier to find the roots then.
Hello sir ! I saw on your videoclip plant garden look very nice you did it.Thank you very much.

Keep up the good work
Appreciated
