I can't believe they didn't go with this ending. This was absolutely perfect - it brings tears to my eyes. And I'm not just talking about Angel walking back on stage like that (which was also perfect). But it was just the nice nod to its theatre origins and a lovely tribute to this amazing cast.
Ben Waldburger I always kinda thought they should have had people who looked like the actors standing in the places here and in the opening then we go into Rent with the obc (ish) and close with the last No Day But Today as Anthony Rapp (Mark) sitting in the audience wearing like Collins’ cap, Roger’s jacket etc to show this whole thing was Mark’s production based on this experience (kinda like it was with Jonathan and his friends who were either HIV+ or had died from the disease)
@Sunday Girl the thing is that yes it's a nice way to reflect on its theatrical origin and the obc, but a movie is not a stage production. They're totally different so you can't always use the same scenes because of the flow. Movies are more detailed, you sort of get transported into the story in a way that theatre doesn't. This ending would have twisted the flow of the movie and completely forgotten about Mark. This is technically Mark's story, he's the narrator. With the ending they went with, not only are they showcasing the characters and the obc, but they're also making us think about aids, life and its ups and downs, the group of people you surround yourself with, that there's no day but today while staying in Mark's pov (which shows his development). All that in the little film that he made. And ending with a shot of Angel is significant because it pays tribute to the people we've lost to aids (like the names of the people in the support group, they're names of people that Jonathan Larson knew and died to aids). And had they gone with this ending, I'm sure many people would have thought that Angel had not died
Collins collapsing in Mimi's lap makes me tear up, after she tells them about seeing Angel. Collins suffers so much in this film, and his actions speak louder than his words, powerful as the words are.
I'm torn... this is a great ending, but I also like the idea of seeing the narrator's (Mark's) project come together. Especially since they kinda took a huge dump on his character development with the cut of "Goodbye Love" and "Halloween."
Let’s be honest, who here didn’t care that we had two gay couples as well as interracial couples, and this was the end of the 80s!! God this movie accepted diversity and it was awesome!!
just because modern media and social media likes to act that everything before 2016 was not diverse and everyone hated anything that wasn't all white or straight doesn't mean it was true. There are TONS of movies, shows, plays etc. with all kinds of diversity. That wasn't the only thing they brought to the table, and they didn't market the hell out of that fact like what we get today. I won't say stories like RENT were the norm, because it was and is special (at least imo) but not for it's diversity, for it's heart.
@@RedDragonForce2 - sorry, it just drives me up the wall the way modern culture treats diversity. It feels like in the past diversity was just a fact of life, but now it's mandatory even if it doesn't suit the story, setting, time period or what have you. I just wish we could get more stories like this, and less taking white stories and adding diversity. I'm probably just screaming into the wind though.
Okay I am now crying. This musical leaves me in tears every time and is just so powerful. Something I love about this ending is that Benny is singing with them, I just find it so moving.
Finale B is one of my favorite ending songs to any musical. You Can't Stop the Beat is also up there, but Finale B leaves me in tears in a way YCSTB does not.
@MsAliciaRL final B is done so perfectly with the 2 songs over lapping into a perfect melody. Occasionally the females lines come out over the males n vise versa
I heard of this alternate ending and after seeing it I can say is it's a great way to end the film because Angel comes out at the end just like in the stage version and also is a smart way to connect with the opening of the movie. But I can understand why it was cut because people who are not familiar with the show would be confused like wait didn't he die? I understand why it was cut but still a good ending.
I came here just to hurt myself and cry 😂😩 Gets me every time (EDIT: I didn't mean actually hurting myself, I just meant I came here to experience the beautiful emotions this song evokes.)
This video Memories Back Then when I had my dad memories now and forever hold and love this video Love is rent no there is no future there is no path to go in for it forward
No...no, I'm not sobbing my eyes out. That's not happening. This movie made me cry so much. And I'm disappointed, cause Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp were in Greensboro, NC a few years ago talking about their experiences with RENT. I was as student at UNC-Greensboro and even at the student rate, I couldn't afford a ticket to go.
I started watching this movie last night and finished it this afternoon (I've seen it before, but this is the first time I've actually paid close attention to the plot). This ending is beautiful and yes it does connect to the opening, and a part of me thinks it should've been kept in. Why? Because an interesting angle to go for would've been to make it seem like the characters were already dead, and that everything we saw in the movie was them reflecting on their lives, and then to end it with them exactly where the movie started, the auditorium (which is a metaphor for heaven). But I understand them not wanting to approach that, because it would've been too easy to make it seem like everyone died along with Angel.
That would’ve been not only beautiful but deep since Jonathan Larson died during the production and it would’ve gotten teary eyed for people who knew the backstory.
You used to say and I still think that I would never spent hundreds of dollars on a Broadway show. But this show would be worth it. This movie really moved me.
Amazing song. I played bass guitar for this show recently (a local amateur theatre company) and was blown away by the music. I had never heard it before, apart from Seasons of Love. That Larson chap could write a tune! What a tragedy that he didn't live to get the acclaim (and the money) for this wonderful show. You know, some people in the band were saying "This doesn't seem to fit" or "Why is this bit in the show?" but my attitude is: leave it. It's not perfect (is anything?), but it's a little theatrical masterpiece.
i watched rent a week ago and have been heartbroken ever since... this ending is so beautiful and definitely provides closure over Angel’s death. thank you for sharing and for helping with the heartbreak💜
My favorite scene comes during the finale B. When Angel's spot is empty, the audience is reminded of her death at her funeral but then walks on stage. This alone was enough to make me tear up but when she and Tom briefly held hands Tom's loving look at her was one of the most loving moments in any movie.
I've seen Rent live on Broadway 3 times, own the 2005 movie and the 2008 last filmed production and I STILL bawl my eyes out during this song every time I hear it.
I have a theory about this ending when angel comes back it means they all are dead and are in heaven. Mark died of old age, Johann died of a heart attack from her stress from her job in her late 40's, Maureen died of heartbreak because, Johann died, Collins didn't last long without angel and just stopped fighting, And mimi and Roger died together.
schoolgurl21 He could have died of old age as well. Or since he was a yuppie, he had money and could have gotten murdered. The possibilities are endless
I've seen Rent on Broadway 3 times, own the movie and the film of the final performance. I have lyrics tattooed on my body. I am what you will call OBSESSED. And every time that Angel walks out during the finale when the cast is in the Seasons of Love formation, I fucking lose it.

Poor Benny at last gets to sing along with the gang :') twas sad to watch that interview where Taye says he always feels like the outcast because everyone's singing and dancing and he's always the antagonist.
The problem for me with the show/movie's treatment of Benny is that he isn't really. villain. He's sincerely trying to help his friends, he treats them more courteously than they treat him, he pays for Angel's funeral and what happens? His wife kicks him out and he's forgotten. So 'letting him' sing with the others at the end (or the quick shot of him in Mark's film in the ending they used) is less than the least that could have been done for him. punkypower Plus, it makes the film come full circle if you take into account it begins with them singing “Seasons of Love” in the theatre

When Collins looks at Angel.. you can almost see the tears in his eyes over what couldn't be, makes me tear up so hard.

Thank god this moment's not the last.
They should've go with this
But the audience may be confuse
So why not make Angel stand there in the stage alone?
And the other members join her?
It makes sense to me why it was the other way around.
Even though he's gone, he's still with them
Its their way of bringing her back
Or dress in white to signify Angel died
Wouldn't that make people think that the characters died and are reuniting with ANGEL?
