Are you teaching your kids cursive? What program or curriculum do you use?

My son is in 3rd grade and HATES writing. I've tried many curriculums and just started BJU cursive this year. So far he is liking it. But getting him to write is a struggle. He always gets so frustrated! I haven't started cursive sooner because his handwriting is so bad.. I feel terrible saying that but nothing I try works. I'm hoping that cursive helps him get better with spacing, size, and legibility.

Love Abeka’s cursive! I get comments on my daughter’s cursive all the time!

With his knack for cursive and his age, have you considered adding the world of calligraphy next; writing as an artistic expression?

I got the channies cursive notebook off Amazon to use this coming year. We have used a lot of different handwriting curriculum and my son still struggles with spacing and getting his slant but knows the formations well so I think this will be a great fit and excited to pull copywork related to our lessons and fun things to mix up what he does like jokes and fun facts :) he'll be in 5tg grade.

I taught Kindergarten in a district that used D’Nealian (print with tails) that prepared for cursive in 3rd grade. Then in the last few years cursive isn’t taught at all because of typing. ☹️ So when I started homeschooling my daughter in her Kindergarten year I taught her D’Nealian with the intention that we’ll start cursive. I still can’t get her to print all that nicely and she really wants to learn cursive next year in 2nd grade, so we’re going to go with it. Maybe it’ll help her penmanship. 🤷🏻‍♀️ One can only hope!

That style of cursive is the older Palmer style, with its distinctive capital Q that resembles a 2. Most schools teach either the Zaner-Bloser or D'Nealian styles.

I really appreciate ABEKA's cursive. It is thorough and beautifully done. I like the standard. My kids enjoy specific standards. Also, the Handwriting without tears is sloppy and chunky. It looks extremely juvenile to me. Great video.
After Abeka cursive, I feel it not only prepares you to write it, but alsp decipher it. A handwriting without tears type font probably would struggle reading the constitution.

My daughter is in a similar situation. She is currently doing the Abeka Academy K5 Manuscript. She has expressed interest in learning to write in cursive next year. Even though she is very good student and her manuscript is very solid, I was worried that she might struggle if we jump right into 1st Grade Cursive next year. Was there enough basic instruction and review at the beginning of 1st grade to make the transition pretty easy? Did you do anything in the summer to give him a head start with cursive before jumping into 1st? Thanks so much for doing this video, I'd love to hear any advice you have about making the transition. It looks like it worked out well for your son!

Does Abeka have a separate handwriting curriculum or is it just their language arts? Because we already have language arts but it doesn't include handwriting.

I am considering switching to abeka next year...my daughter will be in 2nd grade. She has no experience in cursive right now. Do they review well in the beginning in abeka? Will they still provide a good foundation jumping in at 2nd grade in your opinion?

You might want to look at level 1 because Abeka runs a year ahead

I put my son in the grade he was supposed to go into. They reviewed for several weeks before getting into anything difficult.

I notice very distinct similarities between my handwriting and my mother's. Not only that, but at least one of my brothers has very similar handwriting to our dad's.
