  • A STEAM LOCOMOTIVE IS RUNNING WILD WITHOUT AN ENGINEER TO STOP IT (TRAINS GONE WILD) AND THREATENS TO CRASH INTO AN EXPRESS TRAIN. ONLY HELEN HOLMES CAN SAVE THE DAY. A 1915 B&W SILENT SHORT WHICH SURPRISINGLY ENOUGH FOR THAT PERIOD ILLUSTRATES THAT A WOMAN GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY CAN AND WILL DO THE JOB. EPISODE #26.
    Great Steam Train action in the Los Angeles - Long Beach- Glendale area. SPL & SL 4-6-0's. A shot of a pre-WWI US Navy destroyer moving underneath an open railway bridge. Unfortunately a beautiful Indian motorcycle gets drowned.
    The Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad (reporting mark SLR)[1] was a rail company that completed and operated a railway line between its namesake cities, via Las Vegas, Nevada. Incorporated in Utah in 1901 as the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad, the line was largely the brainchild of William Andrews Clark, a Montana mining baron and United States Senator. Clark enlisted the help of Utah's U.S. Senator Thomas Kearns, mining magnate and newspaper man, to ensure the success of the line through Utah.[2] Construction of the railroad's main line was completed in 1905. Company shareholders adopted the LA&SL name in 1916. The railway was also known by its official nickname, "The Salt Lake Route," and was sometimes informally referred to as "The Clark Road." The tracks are still in use by the modern Union Pacific Railroad.
    There is also an Admiral cigarette commercial from Thomas Edison studios which looks like a bunch of hippies smoking joints at the Haight theater in San Francisco's Haight Asbury district. LOL

    When you look at that film today and see old mechanical machines levers and pullies and actors who back then performed their own stunts without any safety gear you just have to tip your hat to those folks.........Loved it thanks for uploading a real gem.

    @likitty20 Also in the note she wrote oil on. Notice the tenders don't have coal. Coal was not as readily available in La. but there was plenty of oil. In the 1910's the technology for refining oil was not as good as today. There was in fact waste in the oil industry. The RR purchased the Waste oil for almost nothing. That's why there is plenty of smoke. and the safety valves were popping. Also injectors on depending on how much can overflow the boiler and lock up the cylinders breaking them

    Great film. It partly reminds me of the Railway Series story "Old Iron" in that another engine was sent out to stop the fleeing light-engine.

    • @stevensolway1054
      @stevensolway1054 2 роки тому

      James number 4 the red engine 2-6-0 became a runaway when some boys were fiddling with the controls. Then it was Old Iron Edward number 3 4-4-0 was sent to chase after James on the parallel double track. Then the fireman of Edward was able to lasso a hoop of wire rope, with a shunters pole, around James buffer, and Edward was braked to a stop, then Edwards fireman scrambled into James cab to shut off the throttle. James said THANK YOU to Edward. And James said that Edward wasn't a piece of old iron after all. As a reward. SIR Topsham Hatt sent Edward to the repair works...Edward said Oh thank you Sir!! It will be lively not to Clank anymore! Paraphrased due to space. NARRATED BY RINGO STARR of the Beattles. Based on Thomas and Friends. As seen in the 1990S P.B.S. TV. Show, "SHINING TIME STATION". Starring Miss Dee Dee Con as Station Master Miss Stacey Jones. And a delightful cast of fellow actors, like Schemer.lol lol.

    • @TheClaudHamilton
      @TheClaudHamilton 2 роки тому +1

      @@stevensolway1054 Actually, James and Edward's numbers were 5 and 2 respectively. Also, just for the record, the only reason I didn't state their names was because I appreciated not everyone was going to understand what I meant.

  • @TheClaudHamilton
    @TheClaudHamilton 14 років тому +1

    @sfo1164 Basically, the Railway Series is what Thomas and Friends was before it suffered from sugar-coating and inauthenticity in the hands of television. Old Iron was where the character Edward proves himself in a sort of rodeo-esque rescue of another engine.

    Watch that guy run the Armstrong levers on the interlocking plant in several spots on the video. There's no doubt he's a straight-out railroad employee rather than an actor! Those are the moves you'd make to operate 'em. One move is "the gentle jerk". It's a hard, controlled snap that you'd arrest a couple inches of movement later into a more controlled pull; that's how you get all that weight (of the draft tubing) moving. You wouldn't accomplish it by just pulling with all your might!

    The injectors are placed just. below the firebox and are fed steam from there because it's highest there, the water comes from the tender and is forced into a pipe from this steam. This pipe goes to the front of the loco to the feed water heater, then into the loco at that point because the pressure is lower at the front. Steam locomotives are an excellent point of study, only REAL MEN know about them! If it you ever get a chance to look at the back of a steam engine, check out it's gonads, they are the size of beach balls!

    This is a great film for it's depiction of railroad operations and right-of-way signaling, etc. How many people today have seen someone run "armstrong" levers? Hang a mail bag?
    The giant gas-holder tank in the background says "L A Gas". maybe it's near Los Angeles? Does anyone remember these tanks, when they made water gas at the coke plants, before natural gas was pipe-lined to the Midwest for heating?

      If it was moving in the yard, it would not have had a conductor. If it were being moved to the ready track from the roundhouse or shop, only a hostler would be needed. Besides, in that era, the conductor did not ride in the locomotive. On the main line, the three man engine crew was the engineer, fireman, and head brakeman. The conductor and rear brakeman rode in the train, or in the caboose on a freight.

    It was great seeing both the wild locomotives and my neighborhood a hundred years ago. I missed something, though. Exactly how did they stop the runaway engine? It seems to stop by itself just as the other engine catches up to it. Did it just run out of fuel? Or did my aging eyes miss an obvious bit of action?

    • @kleetus92
      @kleetus92 4 роки тому +3

      Hollywood magic. Only way you could stop it would be to climb over the tender and into the cab to close the throttle. That's why they were riding the pilot of the chase engine.
      That said, the way the engineer got nailed by the electric cord, at best he'd be doing yard speed which is usually 5 mph.... so really it shouldn't have been hard to run down. But, it's a movie...

    • @jimstevens1726
      @jimstevens1726 3 роки тому +3

      I assumed we were supposed to think they coupled the chase engine to the runaway and used the brakes. Didn't see anyone climbing over the engine though. I think the saying "it's just a movie." applies here.😂 The plot doesn't really hold water, even if you know nothing about railways but, as a bit of "action-packed" fun, it did the job. 👍

I'm not really computer-savvy, but I can dial into new stuff better than most for an old guy, and I think I'm gonna give this thing a try!

      That's the hazards of Helen, ok. I get it now, she may save the excursion from a runaway but damn she lost the bike. FIRED!

      @@kylewells6871 Pretty sure she stole the bike so maybe they will let her keep the job since it wasn't company property. Her delivery crush might not be too happy though! lol

    A great video but the music lets it down, it's too modern. You need to use the Toccata from 'Suite Gothique' by Leon Boellman, it's an organ piece and a natural for this kind of movie. It also captures the movement of the train. Otherwise a great film.
