  • As countless other stories begin, this one begins with Hitler's rise to power on January 30, 1933. Very few nations, if any at all, were not affected by the consequences of Hitler's insane actions. Hitler had correctly prophesized that those against him would never be happy, even if they fled to the "end" of the world. Though this story does not take us to the end of the world, it brings us close. Of all the hundred thousand Germans who either fled Germany or those who were working or living abroad after 1933, a few thousand found refuge in various internment camps on the island of Jamaica.
This documentary describes how Jamaica became a safe haven for those Germans, either living on the Island, or those rounded up by the British in West Africa, or captured on the high seas while tracing the lives of 4 families who survived the transfer from Africa and detailing their daily lives during internment in Jamaica from 1939 - 1946.

I was born during the war and grew up in Jamaican but was never privy to learn that part of history in school. All this was hidden by the English who ran the school system in Jamaica. Thanks for producing this documentary for all to see. I am 2 years late in seeing this, came upon your channel while searching videos about Jamaica. Thanks Kevin and I hope many Jamaicans will see this awesome documentary.😀😃

Arnold Von der Porten lives up the street from me in Gainesville, Florida. He is now 104 years old, and as sharp as ever.

This makes me think of my dear great grandfather (and many of your grandfathers) that went off to fight for Britain in WW2. My great-grandmother worked in one of the camps for Jews at the Gibraltar camp.
Thankfully a lot of my mothers family can be traced back from the 1700s. Its a beautiful thing to know your family history- other than colonial slavery.

Very informative. I didn't know this bit of Jamaican history. The way that man spoke about "black soldiers" parading the women's camp on Hanover Street came off as racist. Would it have been ok if the grounds were patrolled by white soldiers instead?

    They were living the life
For prisoners. And still had the nerve to be racist and discriminative.

I am surprised that this documentary wasnt about the Germans who emigrated to Jamaica in the 1830s, but I suppose there's enough of those already. Interestingly at the same time there was a refugee camp in Jamaica housing Polish and Dutch Jews called Gibraltar I believe

8/17/24 Thank you for the history lesson, I was certainly unaware of these happenings in my former country. Today, we see that people have not progressed very far. We are still under threat of great wars instigated by ungodly men and worse, those who could STOP these men and prevent carnage and destruction, do nothing. Unrighteous men can never rule successfully and cannot bring ultimate happiness even in fair lands. I am an Israelite, and we will ultimately rule the planet earth. Soon, our LORD YAHAWASHI will take control of earth, bestowed to him by our GOD YAHAWAH. YAHAWASHI will cleanse the planet of ALL the unrighteous and elevate the true HEBREW ISRAELITE RULERS to power over, ALL. We will rule in righteous. Peace and true love, harmony and respect, WILL prevail FOREVER.

The Germans in Jamaica was very racist I have german and African ancestry. Alot of them were living in German town westmoreland and they treated the mix children very bad but thank God that end many of the Germans died and some left the country. Jamaica don't need any racism.

I was at the primare showing of this film at the Mona Campus and looked forward to seen it on UA-cam ever since and I've met one German uses father was inturned and his family still live in Jamaica. I do research on US military bases in Jamaica and I've heard a story of US soldiers on march in the the county would have German prisoners marching with them in carkee uniform.

There were prominent Italians interned. The Parachinis were among them. A German doctor practicing in Jamaica was also interned.
